- Ethiopia has begun filling the reservoirs of a controversial mega-dam on the Blue Nile, according to the country's water minister.
Egypt and Sudan had requested the Grand Renaissance Dam not be filled until an agreement is reached.
The dam has caused nearly a decade of contentious negotiations over concerns it could drastically reduce water supply to downstream countries.
Ethiopia has said the dam is crucial for its growth and it would begin filling it during this month's rainy season.
Al Jazeera's Charles Stratford lays out the politics behind the dam and Alex Gatopoulos has more on where the concerns lie for Egypt and Sudan.

The money that Egypt wastes on military hardware can be used to desalinize water from the Mediterranean sea. No one has a right to deny Ethiopia the use of its own water. Egypt should be smart and negotiate a better deal rather than stall and Ethiopia ends up doing as it likes. There is no turning back.

It's the British- Egypt and Sudan's fault for not including Ethiopa with the water agreement. Exactly, Britain made a monumental error by omitting Ethiopia from that agreement on how to share the water of the Nile. Ethiopia is the source of the Nile, which gives them a natural right to the river. Moreover, Egypt and Sudan have been benefiting from the Nile unevenly, with Egypt built Aswan dam on the river using 93% of its water and Sudan 86%. It is rather fair for Ethiopia to benefit from the river in a way and manner that improve their socio-economy...
