God I Miss the early 90s whenever I hear this amazing theme. I'm sure I'm not the only one who tried so hard to keep jools and jops Alive as long as possible during a playthrough. Even Stoo lol. :). It was always sad seeing the hills get covered with headstones during the game. Its amazing how 2D graphics was able to capture such emotion.
I've talked to a few people now who say they always restart the mission if Jools & Jops die. I used to do the same myself, but I'm too lazy for that now. Maybe on the next playthrough! One of the things I love about Cannon Fodder is how behind all the sardonic humour and silliness, it does make you reflect on the sacrifice and the senseless loss of life in war. Boot hill is a perfect example of that.
@@caffeinated-pixels lol same here I tend to just play through it now although its always tempting to try the mission again with the the duo still in the team Oh absolutely matey. I totally agree on it's message
On a side note. The Amiga era and the 90s overall was an awesome time for U.K and European software studios such as Sensible software (of course) The bitmap brothers Psygnosis Team 17 Rainbow Arts Factor 5 Codemasters Rareware Great times :) Sucks how most of them are gone now. At least Team 17. Codemasters and even rare are still around.
@@nomadlonestar8004 Indeed it was! DMA Design who made Lemmings and Walker are also still around as Rockstar North, who I believe have done quite well for themselves 🤣
Losing Jools or Jops could only end in two ways. Either you grief and coninue, or you arrange a public service. Stoo was kind of a side-kick but would one would get used to love him too.
So i met Richard Joseph a long time ago and we talked and just chewed the cud (when i worked for Ocean) . I can say without prejudice that he was :( my favourite musician of the era. This hill theme and also the complete score for robocod, although so different, just capture what the developers wanted to portray. Rip man, you made good music. Damn, there's not much music around nowadays that can make you so attached to a group of pixels ;)......23 years later
+Paula Greensmith Indeed, RJ was a brilliant composer (and sound engineer - ice cream, ice cream!) and one of the stars/pionneers of the 16-bit era. I still enjoy listening to his music today, especially his work on Cannon Fodder and Chaos Engine. Must have been great to meet him.
I'm too young to have played this growing up, so I don't have any nostalgia for the game, but I recently picked up a used Amiga 500 and several games, one of which is Cannon Fodder. Amazing music, great gameplay, and a lot of satirical humor, so good even for today's standards
Yeah, Cannon Fodder is still a very playable game today. It could use some keyboard shortcuts for switching squads and weapons, and controlling some of the vehicles can be a bit wonky but other than that I think it's aged pretty well. It does get quite hard in some of the later missions though! 😁
How has this only got 4000-odd views?! This game was incredible, not least for it's music! There may not have been the pixel-power back in the day but arguably better for it in my opinion, it spawned fantastic gameplay and great music!
@@caffeinated-pixels i remember playing this a lot when I was a kid on my old mans amiga jools and jops hardly ever left their start point, id send out the " grunts"to do the work. great music from that era
Tell me about it. I didn't get it when I was 8 years old, I didn't know why it wasn't endorsed by the Royal British Legion. I get it now, but as a kid it's still a fun game

The Home/Away scorecard above a hill of gravestones with new recruits queuing up is eerily true of war. To those in control, it’s a scoresheet.

The only “violent” anti war video game ever made. Far too clever a concept for the tabloid newspapers to get their heads around
There are more "violent" anti war video games, but this one is THE "violent" anti war video game.
Umm, Spec Ops: The Line would like a word. :)
Really captures the emotion of loss of military families who lose loved ones in war. War that only benefits those in power.

This song is called Narcissus
Indeed it is! The track is an instrumental version of a love song Jon Hare wrote when he was younger. Or, so goes the story.

Here is an audio track of Jon singing the actual track.
