@@chivalrous_chevy1163 Well, the Amiga version of this game is the original. All other versions are converted. If you listen to the tunes of the conversions you'll realize most of them sound not as good and clear as the Amiga music. Also some other versions are missing the lyrics from the intro tune (aside from Amiga versions all but 3DO, Jaguar, Atari ST and Game Boy Color) or at least the lyrics don't sound near as good as on Amiga (Atari ST and GBC). That makes two systems (3DO and Jaguar) equal to the sound quality of the Amiga. But both of these systems are much newer hardware than the Amiga. That means a 1985's Amiga makes possible for what other manufacturers needed much newer hardware that was released in the 1990's only. Seems like Amiga won the sound competition. That's what was talked about here.
Sensible software were the kings of the 90s for me. Everyone played Sensible Soccer but this was my favourite. Such an incredible game, it was able to entertain yet leave you feeling such despair for your fallen comrades you'd hesitate to send any more troops in to play more. Those who criticised it for glorifying war clearly never played it.
It's mad with these games how they've stuck in our heads. I played it when it was released and i still regularly hum the music. Especially the recruiting screen music. It so sad and haunting.. and with more and more tombstones on that hill.
Looking back its weird how this was controversial for allegedly celebrating war. Its disclaimer on the British Legion is a notable outcome of that. The satirical introduction, coupled with the symbolism of the desperately long line of recruits and graves, are mutual parodies of the political intrigues of war and the horrific consequences for humanity. It's there to see, not to mention the occasional screams of a wounded soldier on the floor unable to die. It was an awesome game, but the undertones are quite wrenching really.
Quoting from the manual for the Mega Drive version (but pretty much the same in all the other versions' manuals), under the section "Be The Fittest" (handy hints for playing the game): "And on a more serious note: don't try playing this at home, kids, because war is not a game; war, as _Cannon Fodder_ demonstrates in its own quirky little way, is a senseless waste of human resources and lives. We hope that you never have to find out the hard way."
There was a Genius hidden behind that game... A message hidden in satire.. in today's Politically correct world this song wouldnt stood a chance to be published.... They rather release black man singing on how many ways he will f.. his bit.. I miss 90s
Loved this game and music, thanks for the nostalgia! I remember getting Jools to somewhere around the 75th mission, surviving tanks, helicopters and countless enemies only to be killed by a random farmer with a shotgun shouting "Ger off moi laaand!" I was wounded more about that than anything that has happened in any game since! Brilliant game though
My left mouse button broke right before getting the game so this was exactly as far as I could go. I was stuck for a few days listening to this music on repeat ❤️
If you talk about Amiga,it's really hard to find other (only) two games, among all the games I love........Benefactor-F1GP,but also Pinball Fantasies and Flashback are games I never stop playing!
I was having a family spat last year and my brother feeling less alpha, ended the conversation by shouting, 'I don't want to be Jops!'. Best reference my life will ever see.
What a Fantastic Theme Song.. It must have had a big impact on the sales of the game. I had the Amiga 1200, Amiga 600, Amiga 500+ and the good old "Amiga CD32" 3 years before the bloody PS1.. A Shame they went under.. Regards twoTone;-)
I have an Amiga 1200 with a "CF" card and all the games, including Cannon Fodder.. I bought Cannon Fodder on disc boxed, just for the disc drive clicks. (And because it's the number one game ever).

@@NeilusNihilus yeah well, we were lucky to almost get the full ride of gaming developement. Back then almost each game brought something new and exciting. Also they were scarce, at least where I'm at so you would appreciate it more. No day one patches, no online walkthroughs etc. you had to put some effort to enjoy them. Great times.
The first video game to use actual audio samples instead of creative beeps and boops to make music. I wish I never sold my A500+ with its GVP HDD with 4mb of ram and 1x SCSI CD-R drive.

One of the best soundtracks for a game...ever.
Always have a wry smile at the lyrics. My young approx 8 year old self thought it was "WAR! Never in summer time" 🤭
puts a tear in your eye
but only in one eyes because you need the other eye to to aim at Communists with your rifle...
Yeah man gotta love these times. Your mind was free and nothing to care about. Just playin‘ Amiga. ;-)
Thats cause Jools is always first to go
I can't stop listening to that introductory tune even nowadays!
And, only Amiga makes it possible...
Indeed!
Still playing it with an A500 and a 1084S!
It was released on other systems so they make it possible too

I miss it.

It's not the same without floppy drive accessing the disk! Still amazing though!
ah yes worth it indeed. Even Monkey Island 2 and of all it's floppies was worth it
To be quite honest, Cannon Fodder was pretty light with the loading times and disk swapping. It wasn't a problem at all.
I remember playing this as a kid with my late best friend. Very fond memories of this classic.

I still can’t believe people attacked this game for glorifying war. It’s very clearly an anti-war game.
