As an American I have a huge respect for South Korea. Many of the United State’s European Allies only like us when they need us, but South Korea isn’t like them. South Korea is the best ally because they actually care about the America and doesn’t just use us like war dogs. South Korea gives Americans hope that we actually have a true friend that isn’t just using us. 🇺🇸❤️🇰🇷
As a combat veteran I have served with almost every ally but South Korea and we have many many more friends.
@@hunterrichardson9605 I know, it just feels like a lot of European countries don’t like america, and I feel like South Korea is a better ally. That’s not to say all Europeans hate Americans, but I definitely feel more welcomed by Koreans than I do Europeans.

No surprises here. The Republic Of Korea has for years had some of the best soldiers in the world. I was a crew chief and gunner in a Huey helicopter during the Vietnam/American conflict and I saw how the Vietnamese fought, the Americans fought and how the ROK soldiers fought.
You would often have to force the Vietnamese off the chopper. Americans would wait until it landed and followed training upon exit. The ROK soldiers would jump out while the chopper was 10 ft. in the air and then just disappear into the bush (pilots LOVED ROK Marines, quick in and out). ROK's are tough, brave and extremely dedicated to their missions and their nation. They are among the fiercest fighters on earth.

I was in a US Infantry platoon in South Korea (02 to 03) The ROK soldiers were among the toughest soldiers id ever seen.

Australian here, we just purchased 129 AS21 Redback IFVs ( a version of the K21 ) at around 5-7 billion AUD. We're also getting 30 AS9 Huntsman ( K9 Thunder ) SPGs and 15 AS10 AARVs. Most of which will be built under license here in Australia.

I think one also needs to take into account South Korea's growing global soft power. It certainly helps, if large portions of the populations of partnering countries listen and watch K-pop and their TV-series, and eat Korean food. If you sneer at this idea, just consider how important soft power is for the USA, and how that depends on things like Hollywood, McDonalds and Coca Cola.
I think that a very large portion of young adults in the west would support South Korea in a conflict. Because there is an emotional connection there!

Boycott of Chinese goods/biz ... demonstrations/rallies in fornt of Chinese embassies... This is our ultimate power; all we have to do is to fearlessly fight and hold on. @@Potato-Eye No. The reason why k-dramas are so popular world-wide is that they have comparatively high production values, with good writing, directly, acting, and even special effects. The best TV series coming out of South Korea can match all but the very best coming from anywhere else (including Hollywood). While k-dramas might not be to everyone's tastes, its no coincidence that they are so popular all around the world.

I spent 2 years in korea with the army. The ROKA is an impressive organization, and I worked with their artillery unit. Very impressive.
The ROK army sorta scared me while I was at Casey back in 06 to 08

I served two tours in Korea while I was in: 03-04, and 07-08. Have you ever seen Korean people working? It is a thing to behold. Their work ethic is among the best you will ever know. That's why all of this is fully believable to me. I know these people, and I've seen what they're capable of. To Russia, China, and North Korea, underestimate this country at your own peril. 🇰🇷🇰🇷🇰🇷
Their productivity levels are low. They are forced to stay at work all day.
And then, you look at their birthrate...
You should take a visit again, the entire country is burnt out. If you think Americans party hard walk along any busy street at 2am and you will see hundreds of young men obliterated passed out sleeping on streets. Not to mention the other half are living sedentary lifestyles withdrawn from society. Korea/Japan is in serious trouble....
regardless of their other issues the country has a more professional and prideful theme of itself, I'm perfectly willing to be burnt out my whole life working like I never had to experience the benefits of being in a society that takes care of itself.

My grandfather was a medic, Korea, 1952-53. Chorwon. Never talked about it. Imagine he saw bad stuff, he was there during various battles...he died of old age in 2016. 25 ID/90 FAB. I'm a bit proud of ROK for upping their arms and defense game. It is good to know we have a strong ally in Korea. It's relieving.

My grandfather fought on hamburger hill in Korea. He died of cancer at the age of 65. And he never talked about what happend or what he did. I wish one day to find out what went on with him there.
my grandfather was a member of the army airborne in the Korean War through the entire thing, also never talked about it. It has molded my current beliefs in our nation as well as others, that our sacrifices shall not go unpaid. They didn't sacrifice their mental health and lives for us to turn a cold shoulder to these free people 70 years later. Very relieving to see our allies keeping up.

South Korea has quite a large military force for her size/population, so ample indigenous demand for competent and reliable weapon system. She also has good manufacturing industrial capability like automobile, shipbuilding, electronics, semiconductor, smartphone. South Korea is one of capable arms manufacture of NATO weapon with good performance and reliability at affordable price and fast delivery. For medium regional powers who want buy advanced NATO weapon to strengthen its defense power, South Korea is sprawling shopping mall of modern weapons, vehicles, ships, firearms and ammos. Diplomatic relations with potential buyers and USA / EU countries are also robust and good.
Korea is also the world's top TV manufacturer and will soon be making science-fiction TVs.

18 seconds into the video and I’ll say this. I spent a year in Korea at USAG Camp Humphreys. In that year I met many MANY KATUSA’s (Korean Augment To United States Army, essentially Korean nationals that would serve their mandatory service in the U.S. Army inside Korea instead of the R.O.K. Army) and I met many R.O.K. Soldiers they are some of the most amazing people I have met, they all have an immense sense of duty to their country as they know just how under threat they are. Due to Asian culture toward the elderly there are many MANY people who were alive for and fought in the Korean War. They are not afraid to tell the younger generations just how dangerous their neighbors are. Hell one of my best friends had a Tattoo Artist, a 80 something year old man who was a kid during the Korean War and at the end of it became a Korean Marine. That man was so cool and his tattoos were works of art, I swear archeologists in the future will dig up bodies with his ink on them and will compare him to Michelangelo. He always talked about how serious a threat North Korea and China are and how he is extremely glad that the younger generation realizes it. He was also extremely thankful for the U.S. standing so firm with the R.O.K. He said that he has memories of when he was a kid being evacuated by U.S. soldiers, being cared for by army doctors and medics, and how the Army Corps of Engineers helped rebuild much of the nation.
As a former US Marine, I can tell you that the Korean rock marines as we call them are hard-core and I would fight with them any day

I had two tours in South Korea and got to know them a bit. They are smart enough to know the threats they face without any any illusions and so do what they must to protect themselves. They're a good, trustworthy and extremely honorable people who are 100% worth our (US) defending.

More like South Korea is actually sitting down to play chess, as most other states just walk away and ignore these problems. If every nation really tried to boost their defence industries, it’s very likely many countries would surpass Korea; problem is governments are willing to drain the budgets dry in order to divert that money to public services that get votes for them in the next election, rather than help keep their country actually capable in a potential war.
Korean Metal is amazing. They need a break they are OUR front line. Does the USA have a defense like NATO in Asia. Yes we do. Trump only heard about NATO last year. He wouldn't like to know we believe in a free world, but will give in to Russia who only attacks countries they "think" they can beat. Stop that steal. South Korea's whole manufacturing seems to have a major attitude change since the 2000s. Kias used to be known as very bad cars but one day Kia decided those days were over. For a while now, Kia has been a sort of best kept secret, as "cheap but high quality."
I drove a Kia in high school and that car took a beating and a half and kept going. I gave it to my sister after I left for college and she wrecked it numerous times and I'm sure she forgot to change the oil. That thing kept ticking until she graduated med school and she decided she could afford something shinier. My current car is also a Kia and I convinced my mom to get a Sorento when she almost bought a Nissan Rogue or Murano.
My Dad was in the Korean War in 3 RAR and fought at Kapyong in 1951.
Hanwha is building those129 Redback IFVs for the Australian Army just up the highway from me.

[Imagine] Numerous software engineers (South Korea is a very exceptional country where even Google or Facebook has to compete with the indigenous service providers) are coding the lines for aircrafts, radars and missiles...

When I was young the defense budget was over 4 % (very high for a poor country...) It is now around 2.7%. But R&D and production have been very efffective, efficient and stable.
1) They have spent money on the best project, at a given moment. In the early 70s, rifles(lisence-production of M-16) and 105mm artillery(the US taught us the technology). In the 80s and 90s, tanks and howitzers and ships. in the 2000s, submarines and missiles and trainer aircraft (props and jets). In the 2010s, satellites and general enhancement of many categories of weapons.
2) And big companies have been doing this out of patriotism, not for big money. They tend to think defense biz as a prestige or a medal worthy of headache. For example, Samsung developed aerospace[related technology and 155mm K-9 upunitl about 2015 and sold the company to Hanhwa. LIG (which is a 'little' Raytheon) is the only company the owner rescured when the group was hit by a severe recession at the end of 1990s. Hyundai has lost a lot of money for K-2 tank. The world-best producer of ammunintion, Poongsan, do not earn much.. it's main biz is non-fero metal like copper. For them, ammo biz is only for honor.
3) It is step by step development. For example, AESA radar. Before SK developed it, it ahd already dominated global 5G communications equipment market. The technology is the same. GaN semiconductors... noise filtering... Before they came out with 1,500 hp powerpack (a set of engine and transmission for tanks) they had made world-best class engines and transmissions for cars.
4) With export or without it, SK will keep on this pace, because it knows the real adversary is China. (In the Korean War, China sent 3 mil. soldiers.)
This is why SK is the only country (except the US) in the West which has been developing 5 layer termianl stage (lower than 150 km altitude) ballistic and air missile defense(BAMD), land based. And it is also the only country (except the US) which has been developing maritime(destroyer and corvette based) BAMD. Why indigenous?Because they want deploy a lot but the Patriot and THAAD and Aegis made by the US companies are too expensive...
This is why they are the only country (except the US) in the West which is developing high-end drones and several kinds of engines for them. I mean high-end like MQ-9 and RQ-180 and CCAs of the US. They want to have hundreds of them, but (especially for the amred model) the export-import is forbidden by the MTCR(missile technology control regime).
I call the US-ROK alliance 'the WOW alliance': With Or Without the US'. The Alliance becomes stronger only when SK gets stronger.
It's all well and good until South Korea's population crashes in the next couple of generations, the birth rate has below replacement levels for a while now.

South Korea have contracts to build new logistics ships for the RFA, so yards back home can focus on building next gen frigates. As stated in the video South Korea has various contracts to modernize the Polish Armored Corps. In short South Korea is helping numerous US aligned nations modernize their militaries in preparation for future conflicts. If a 'Asia Pacific Treaty Organization' (A.P.T.O, pronounced App-Toe) were to be established South Korea has done more than enough to earn themselves a critical position in the new alliance.
I am a South Korean. Many thanks for your appreciation. But I think APTO is unrealistic. Such big differnces between these Asian countries:
1) Japan cannot (by its constitution and politics) fight for others, which means it is not eligible for proper alliance relationship.
2) Everybody is scared and does not want to have a formal alliance with Taiwan, including the USA.
3) South East Asian countries are too relaxed and not desperate enough.
Thus the hub-and-spoke model with the US as the hub. And probably South Korea as a 'low-profile' facilitator, as Warographics is saying in this episode.

The post-World War II baby booms around the globe combined with technical advances allowing for force multiplication set an expectation that big militaries would always be able to expand their roles around the globe. And I think that assumption is already being challenged, backed up (at least here in the US) by cynicism about military service leading to increasing recruitment problems and attitude shifts in the political realm.

동남아시아 국가들은 중국에 대항하기 힘들고 한국이 공들였던 인도네시아는 미국도 인지하다시피 중국과 밀착관계입니다.
그리고, 태국, 싱가폴, 말레이시아 등 동남아 주요 국가들도 그들의 경제가 중국에 종속되었어요. 동남아시아 국가들이 대만과는 거리를 둘 것입니다.
호주는 미국의 동맹이지만, 해군 지원 정도 가능하고 큰 기여를 하지는 못할 겁니다. 다만, 영국이 어느정도 지원을 해줄 수 있겠네요.
아이러니컬 하게도 베트남은 미국, 한국의 새로운 파트너가 될 수 있습니다. 인구도 1억명 정도가 되고요. 한국에게 경제의 많은 부분을 의존하고 있으며 중국과 사이가 좋지도 않습니다.
태국의 경우에도 일본, 한국이 유인할 수는 있지만, 솔직히 말씀드리면 동남아시아 국가에게는 기댈 것이 없습니다. 중국과 거래를 중단하지도 않을 것이고요.
한미 연합군은 독립적으로도 중국, 북한을 유사시에 육로를 통해 평양, 베이징까지 공격할 수 있어야 하며, 이 전제에는 미국과 러시아와의 관계 개선이 반드시 필요합니다.
지금 우크라이나 러시아 전쟁을 빠르게 매듭짓고, 나토가 스스로 무장할 수 있어야 할 것으로 보입니다. 우크라이나에 대공 방어 무기를 제공하는 것은 의미가 없습니다.
중국-대만 전쟁에 러시아가 무기 지원이라도 한다면 정말 힘들어 집니다. 중국의 주요 공장들이 해안가에 있고 군수공장들도 한 곳에 몰려있어 한미일 군대가 이들을 집요하게 공격할만한 용기도 필요해 보입니다. 다만, 이럴경우 한국과 일본 본토는 크게 공격받을 것입니다. 주한, 주일 기지도 대다수 공격받을 겁니다. 그러니깐, 패트리어트나 대공방어 무기를 우크라이나에 지원하면 안됩니다. 중국 미사일 전력이 러시아보다 물량이 훨씬 많기 때문에 방어가 힘듭니다.
중국 견제가 우선되어야 하고, 이를 위해서는 한미 연합군이 대만을 후방 지원해야 합니다. 주일미군은 일본 자위대와 함께 1선에서 해상, 공군 전력을 투사해야하고, 한미 연합군은 대만 본토를 방어해야 할 것으로 보입니다.
문제는 대만이 본토 방어를 할 의지가 있냐는 문제입니다.
최소한 우크라이나처럼 스스로 싸울 의지가 있어야 주한미군이나 한국군이 대만에 파병이 가능하다는 것을 베트남 전에서 깨달았어요.

Half as many people having half as many babies = 75% population collapse in 2 generations. S.Korea is so screwed.

Korean culture offers a lot to learn from. They (strive to and tend to) raise their kids and build their industries and communities very "intentionally" and with a respectful harmony, humility, discipline.
The ROK Marines and soldiers were already no joke but now with the capability to receive potential resupply of their own equipment from abroad they're going to truly be a force to be reckoned with if push comes to shove. Korea has done a stellar job of ramping up its international ties and if they can maintain this momentum they will definitely be a lynch pin in the region regardless of what China does.

The doomsayers of Korea's decline may point to its aging and declining population, but I am sure Korean Reunification, along with policy changes for the youth's economic prospects, will truly catapult the peninsula into the top 5 great powers and even reverse its demographic trend. South Korea can teach the Europeans some lessons when it comes to defending their land & still being a developed country.

They have always put their troops into action since the Korea war to help the USA and others like in Vietnam, Iraq and other places. They have built some of the new ships for the RFA in the UK and could be building the new 155mm tracked guns in the future for for UK army. They also build an EXCELLENT shotgun called the USAS 12 there's only a handful of them in the UK and I got to shoot one in Dorset before and it was GREAT to use.

Even here in America Korean arms are common. Most of my AR steel and aluminum mags are Korean and very good quality, the ammo is also good quality. Their body armor is also some of the best for the price.

I believe we need to realize a vacuum of power in AP region and that's the reason why south Korea has strengthened military power rapidly. South Korea, Japan and the States are together facing off against North Korea, China and Russia ally in this region. But the nuclear weapons balance is broken and will the states be able to handle it alone from deterrent standpoint?

If you know anything about their history, it is very remarkable that the South Korean and Japanese governments are getting chummy. Even before WW2, Korea had been a punching bag for the other powers in the region, including Japan. But China and North Korea's antics has created strange bedfellows.
The thing is, as much as the current government favours Japan, all this can change the moment the government is replaced. With the current government being called as a "Puppet of Japan" by the opposition party and with the president's approval rating fluctuates between 30~40%.
It's been 80 years since WWII. Considering their mutual self-interest and mutual enemies in China, Russia and North Korea, it's about time South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, The Philippines, Thailand, Australia, Malaysia, and Singapore started cooperating together, not only with the USA.

In particular, Korea has never had major problems such as war and other countries, and there is no country that is religiously problematic. This is a huge advantage for arms exports.
It still has participated in wars, one I heard famously is Vietnam and later help in Iraq a little late.
The more i see videos like this, the more i realize that everyone, everywhere, is gearing up for a fight. The real question is: How big of a fight is actually coming, and who's going to be fighting in it?

I see it as the West vs East. NK, China, Russia, etc against the US and it's allies. If you zoom out to the big picture you see they are using the "divide and conquer" tactic to have us on multiple fronts and therefore weaker. Only 2 fronts was what the Axis Powers did and it failed. Now the modern Axis Powers are most likely going to use more than two to cripple the US military. The fronts: Taiwan, Israel/Gaza, and Russia invading Europe to rebuild the USSR. It's smart, and I hope I see the US see the big picture rather than the small individual ones.

The video did mention the obvious reason South Korea (SK) has built its military industry. But more important question was : When. Initially, SK never intended to become an economic powerhouse it is today. It simply had no choice WHEN Nixon Administration decided to pull U.S troops out to appease communist China. Being on its own, SK badly needed weapons to defend itself. In other worlds, SK built heavy industries to make weapons. That decision by President Park almost brought the country to an economic collapse, before the wind changed in 1980 exactly in favor of those heavy industries. Park was assasinated in 1979 (big smile by Jimmy Carter). But his legacy lived on, making SK a country of heavy industry and weapon-manufacturing capability.
Jimmy Carter was such a piece of crap just like Obama and Biden.

The RoK is a critical ally of the US. We HAVE been there since 1953 so please turn down the rhetoric of our military not coming to their aid. And the same thing with Poland as a critical ally. I'm glad that they can have military autonomy to a large degree.
I'll admit, as a Canadian, I really wish we had a military program like South Korea does. Even if that military was used more for defense, used for manpower during emergencies and so on, may not even see actual heavy combat, I'd rather see us prepared than where we're at now.

If some countries didn’t see the rise of South Korea as a major arms exporter it was because they were not seeing with their eyes open. South Korea has had a very long industrial development, Danish industry has over decades had to adapt to the South Korean competition in global export markets, it has been painful for many industries sectors in Denmark but just as South Korea is highly adaptable so is Denmark, every time they out compete a sector we have found new opportunities which we could replace it with, the loss of especially the ship building industry was a hard because of Denmark being a maritime giant traditionally and even once a great naval power until Britain thought it would be best to rule the waves alone 😮 but we held on to our great merchant fleet, and even if it is now South Korea that is building most ships that is registered in Denmark and there are more and more ships registered in other countries for various reasons they are still owned by the great maritime companies who has their headquarters in Denmark, but most workers are not danish and many ships never sail to Denmark, few young danish men want to sail from Istanbul as there Mediterranean home harbor with good’s around the Mediterranean Sea exclusively while they are distributing goods from a giant container ship from South Asia, so local crew man most ships. South Korea as a major arms exporter should have come as no surprise they were already being in civilian and military ship production.

As Indonesian, we also realising that China is potential enemies that could threaten Indonesia border, on 2018-2020 show Indonesia that China can be egoistic and unreasonable, Chines coast guard and Chinese fishin vessels has been multiple times entering illegally into Indonesia exclusive economic zone and claim it as part of China Territory. Since that, Indonesia government try to play carefully and will respond strongly if China still decided to claim Indonesia EEZ border. That is very good to hear. China is so belligerent they feel that all of their neighbors should bow down before their might. The problem is the unholy amount of short range artillery that North Korea has. The short range doesn't matter because the area in question is so concentrated. South Korea could easily win the conventional war but North Korea would level half of the South's cities by the time they did.
If the war stsys conventional only and Russia and China don't intervene, absolutely. But no one really expects Xi to sit it out even though China has told North Korea it will not help if they start the war.

during the first Korean War, Seoul changed hands 7 times and was in ruins at war's end. But most of the South's other msjor cities, such as Pusan and Deagu are *well* beyond artillery range from the DMZ.

One can also see that they are forming deeper cultural bonds across western societies. I've always said that if you want to know someone's origin story, first you eat their food. Here in Oregon my workmates go to Korean BBQ every Friday after work. The vets who've served talk about their time in Korea. Talk lovingly about the food and other aspects of life there. I'm starting to hear more references to K-pop and Korean arts more broadly. This is bigger than just the gear. If you live in an urban area and you haven't had bibimbap by now its just a matter of time. Hopefully it will spur more of us to find out "who" the South Koreans are. Do that 18 hour stop-over in Inchon. See a little bit and maybe go back and stay a while.

Historically, Japan has waged a surprise war without a declaration of war.The 16,000 Elite heavy cavalry that Joseon was proud of, which had suppressed the cruel northern peoples, was defeated by the Yamato Matchlock unit, and 70, 000 Joseon Army was pushed back all the way to Pyongyang. I enjoyed watching it thanks to the automatic subtitle translation. I often see photos with Chinese backgrounds rather than just Korean ones. South Korea has already gone through a war with North Korea backed by Russia and China, and after going through Japan's colonial era, it knows better than anyone the importance of independent national defense, and it also has great significance in wanting to repay the many Western countries including the US, that helped us win at least half of the Korean War. .
South Korea is family at this point just like Japan. They must be protected at all costs.

Just a quick add; S.Korea is willing to set up partnerships with local manufacturing, & transfer of IP in host countries. This is a two-fold benefit, Makes it very attractive to new clients/ nations, and provides a second (or 3rd) supply line for their defence force that is out of range of North Korean strike. For example; the small number of platforms (so far) ordered by the Australian defence force, would not seem to justify the expense of setting up a huge, new manufacturing plant. But it has, and is almost complete. I expect further follow on orders from Australia in the future, but also orders for foreign countries and South Korea it self, as a safe second production line. Australia & Poland are not the only new manufacturing partners, Indonesia is also.
What is really sad is that South Korea wanted to license production (and thus IP) to build US weapons. When they were denied, they started on the tracked 155mm system design that is selling like hotcakes. They have expanded since then.

I spent 12 years in SK as a U.S. Marine and trained with the ROK Marines. Not only are their weapons top notch, the ROK Marines are central to SK’s defense. I’ve seen a lot of soldiers across the globe, but the ROK soldiers are the best trained. Just ask any Vietnam vets what the SK forces did in Vietnam and you’ll understand what I mean. The weapons are only as good as the soldiers who use them. The SK government understands this as well. Semper Fi, brothers.

They are not for defense either, since SK and the US do not have the intention to change the status quo by force, unilaterally.
