A truly powerful scene. But I feel like everyone focuses too much attention to the "Happiness is only real when shared." It is certainly a very powerful statement, but I feel like there should be more attention given to his last thoughts. "If I were smiling and running into your arms, would you see then what I see now?" From the sound of it, while it seems as though he desires to be back with his family, he is getting at how that he is happiest with his death right there. As if he is just appreciating the world in a way far beyond what he expects they would feel at his return. Many people may call him ungrateful and dumb, and there's no denying that he underestimated nature's unforgiving condition, but I see that his critics are either ignoring or failing to recognize the deep existential, psychological and philosophical conflicts that he felt would only be resolved by seclusion in the wilderness. Christopher McCandless is a man I empathize with and respect.
+Jacob Kuchavik I agree with you. However I also think that last thought is meant to explain the meaning of his death. When he dies, viewers won't necessarily see the meaning of it, you naturally ask yourself: 'he could have lived if he simply didn't go to Alaska, what's the point of this?'. So Chris McCandless explains that even though he realises his mistake at that point, he wouldn't have seen the truth had he stayed home. He would not have an understanding of the value of human interaction. It's better to die in peace with that knowledge than to die in ignorance.
DarkLord Gollum it really is a beautiful thought to know Chris died realizing life is bet when shared with the people you love. Like you said he has so many critics abd most say think of the pain he put his family through. And its true he did but in the end he realized that in a sense it was wrong to live this life of solitude always running.
your thoughts are nice but the truth is, "Happiness is only real when shared." is the sentence written on the book by Chris himself but "If I were smiling and running into your arms, would you see then what I see now?" is just a fiction, created by the director of the film. So it is actual vs. fiction? Decide which one to pick yourself!
bmetal2 Well we don't even know if he did a good chunk of the shit in this movie or if he said half of this shit. And even if I am basing it off of fiction, it doesn't change the fact that the message I have found resonates more with me than with the message that is one note he wrote in one of the books he was reading.
Honestly to me, the ending shows that he wouldn't have truly forgiven his parents if he went back home. Like Ron said "When you forgive, you love, and when you love, gods light shines on you". It didn't shine on him in his vision but when he was dying he finally realized the hard way to forgive and love others, not for them but for himself. But its just the movie, and I'm sure this part of the movie is fiction. However, judging by how he actually died, letting everyone know he lived a happy life, I'm sure he forgave them.
I think I understood the ending. Chris imagined how it would be to meet his parents again. But when he looked to the sky, there was no sunlight shining on him (according to Ron Franz that means he does not forgive and so does not love). But as he was lying on the bed, the sun shined on him and he took his last breath. I think in that moment he finally could forgive and was redeemed from his torment
Beautifully explain, I think he lived beautiful and happy life but also made some mistake like not forgiving his parents but at the end he understood his mistake, he remembered his beautiful and happy life and wrote, " Happiness is real when shared. 0:47 William Hurt's acting here combined with the swelling of the violins will never not bring tears to my eyes. The way he is clutching his pants, needing to squeeze something - anything, as the heartbreak overwhelms him completely. It is all so real. No matter what you may think about the actual man that William Hurt is portraying, it is just amazing acting.
I absolutely love Javier Bardem in " no country for old men " but what Hal Holbrook did in this movie in less than 3 minutes is absolutely insane. My heart got broken in zillion of pieces when Ron asked to adopt Chris. I would give him a Oscar without even thinking.
Chris is a hero for me, he lived how he wanna lived in the way he loved... leaving everything in life and go "into the wild" and feel the life and explore life to it's best... the bravest man I ever learn about! "Hapiness only real when shared!" amazing pharse... but in the other side we have the scene of her father cries, that let me think of what he's done to his parents that he go away like this, so ont he other side I cried for his parents and their feelings, that scene was so much painful for me.... R.I.P Chris McCandless ;( A Hero with a tragic ending...
vizelon1 I agree with you BUT you know in the end when he wrote down 'Happiness only real when shared' he was sad he was dying alone right? Indeed he lived how he wanted to do but eventually he realized that he wanted someone to share his journey with.
Yeah the scene with the dad was so hard to watch. The acting and that entire scene were so heartbreaking. How he's just walking down the street like any normal dad, then to see a grown man cry like that for his son...just an amazing scene.
What? Bravest? What kind of man do you actually know? "hapiness only real when shared" Only means that he regret to die alone, to not have a companion in his adventure, in fact, the more people you need to be happy, more unhapiness will you find.
i realize how precious and important to be companied and surrounded by your loved one. "Happiness is only real when shared" is the realest shit i've ever discover for this whole weeks. Glad to let my urge forced me to watch this movie.
i've been through so much, been begging to connect. I just want to know someone out there appreciates that I exist, and to find a purpose more than just living. if you're reading this, I just want to let you know that I, too, am lost. head up high, stay hungry, keep walking.
When people start saying what an inspiration this kid was because of how he broke from society it just seems such a superficial anlysis. Existential problems won't go away no matter how far you go because the problem is in our head. It's real, but in our head. He was a bright, charismatic, good hearted kid, but so focused on his obsession that he never saw the big picture. (Altough what he did to those parents, no matter what kind of assholes they had been, was very very cruel). He grew a lot, but he never realized that he never grew alone. He had those awesome people he met along the way to thank for. He was lucky to have ran into them, having ran into good people, making friends and making a difference in people's life, and that's what truly made him happy. It was only too late until he realized what he had pissed away. "Happiness Only Real When Shared" IMO could be seen as a "Life only truly meaningful when dedicated to others".
TupacLives Sure that's true, but what I meant is that it's more important what you're runnig towards than what you're running from... (maybe you didn't read the whole post)

Just want to say that I am completely amazed by this movie. It sends a strong message and covers almost every aspect of one's life(chapters). He was running away from his problems, but also enjoyed in simple life, and by choosing to live like that he respected everything more. And my conclusion is that we all run to find that simplicity in life..and also his enlightenment came when he found out that he can only be TRULY happy if he shares his happiness with someone, his family..however his journey was life indeed..An amazing individual!R.I.P Christopher McCandles..love to you all:)
I know this movie saved my life. It gave me the desire and fight to go out out and achieve all my dreams. Literally life changing for me personally. Fighting through depression and that longing lust for something else. I know what Christopher McCandless felt. His story changed mine for the better. Something that I'm really thankful for. I'm sad his ended like it did, but it inspired so many others to do better. I love you
Iam thinking ways to end my life right now! And i think it's called depression or something! And i hope i dont get into the heat of the movement and end it all! Because i dont want to die.
I deeply respect and admire Christopher McCandless. He was courageous, adventurous and a brilliant thinker. I share and take much of his philosophy as my own. However, McCandless is a victim of his own hubris. It was his over confidence that lead him to believe that he could survive in one of the toughest terrains on the planet with little preparation or experience. Ultimately, the moral of his story is as much cautionary as it is an enlightening one.
If he had not eaten the poisonous berries, he would have likely not reached the same conclusion about himself during the final days of his life, therefore it is almost like his death was necessary for him to reach the conclusions he did. All that time, he was running away from others but at the same time he realized that he was also living in the moment. I think in the end he finally understood that running from them was the exact opposite of following his excitement. He wanted to return with this new understanding but it seems almost like nature told him that he wasn't going back (when the river flooded). All I am trying to say from this is that his death was necessary for his beliefs to change in a more positive manner.
***** It's not so much that the thought itself was particularly profound, it was the way he came about his conclusion that is memorable. He went to the furthest extremes to expand and develop his own personal philosophy. Many of us feel comfortable in our current state not to take chances. It took a lot of courage to do what he did, and that's why he's become an icon and a modern hero to many.
Dam it he left me speechless .. How impressive how brave how crazy how deep how nonsense how everything all fall into so many parts when I watched this movie .. A vision in my head to do so but a vision in my head to embrace life too
peddle You don't seem so happy, attacking me with little provocation, go ahead and lie to me but don't lie to yourself. The concept of this movie is that we have to find what REALLY beings us happiness, and what's worth dying for, because he found great enlightenment with "Happiness is only real when shared". He knew then he loved his parents, and his sister, and he found that he was mistaken, looking for joy in seclusion. And so you and I don't make the same mistake
He's not a hero, but he's not an idiot, either - there's nothing romantic about what he did and I hate when young people who die are elevated to myths - it's just a very sad story...
I didn't really understand that sentence " "Happiness Is Only Real When Shared" until recently. So recently I traveled a lot to many places alone. Seeing lots of beautiful places, delicious food, taking photos. Lots of new experiences. They were such awesome memories. But every time when I arrived at home, I felt like there were something missing. Those memories are only mine, they are not shared with anyone else. Those photos, those memories, those happiness seem meaningless when there were only me in them. I don't have someone to talk or to laugh about those memories. I can talk about my memories to some one else but it's different because they didn't experience them with me. If possible don't do it alone, experience it with your friends/partners/families. So in the future you have shared memories you can talk or laugh about together.
When you see the father go out, proud, almost a touch of arrogance, trying to avoid it, that horrible feeling at every cost. As he keeps walking, he has to look back, at the memories, but keeping an eye out so nobody is seeing him from his house. At the last turn, he turns back facing the camera, he starts to feel it, panic, where is his boy... I can't even describe how deep this scene is, just that part of this video, it's.... so breathtaking. He finally gives in, sits down in the middle of the road, as he looks into the camera he knows, his little boy is gone, all those memories he has is just memories, he will never see him again. Wow, well done Sir. This small scene, is so beautiful.
William Hurt's acting destroys me in this scene. He's so stiff and lacking any emotions throughout the whole movie until this scene where he finally breaks down and it all comes out. Just the way he walks aimlessly and looks around before collapsing in the street..so powerful. Makes me tear up every time. Poor guy just wants his son back..
Im the only one thinking the ending werent about "Happines is only real when shared" but it actually was about "When you forgive, you love. And when you love, God’s light shines upon you." Just like the ron father figure of alex told him in the top of the mountain. You can see in the ending scene when hes saying " "If I were smiling and running into your arms, would you see then what I see now?" and hes looking for the shine in the sky, but can find it. But he were seeing the light at the end when he forgave and loved.
Yes that's what I thought too, Ron's quotes is the final conclusion of Alex great journey. It's symbolism about his self forgiveness and awaken soul at the end of the story.
There's something really terrifying about knowing you're about to die and setting up "the scene" for it. You don't know you'll die before laying down that last moment, or if it will be peaceful and painless. I imagine this guy didn't think a film would be made about him, or anyone would remember his name. You're going to take a journey into the great unknown, the question that everybody since the dawn of mankind has wondered and you have to do it with your chin held high.
According to the movie, his parents were toxic, horrible people that nobody should be subjected to. Chris didn't want to be around them, so he bounced, and I don't blame him. It was his life to do as he pleased with it. Although his life was cut short, he lived to the fullest, his way, without compromise, and I applaud him for that.
Well, I loved this movie. In the end, it looks like he made peace with the Lord. This makes all the difference how I feel about his death. He thanked the Lord for his good life and he said God Bless all....
The irony is that many kids learn similar lessons to Chris every year and move on with their lives, but because he died so dramatically, he became an example for others in the way the rest never do.
People criticize him but forget he was still a very young man. We all do stupid things and make mistakes during that period of life but we hopefully learn lessons along the way. It appears Chris learned his lesson, that happiness is only real when shared and that the system serves a purpose and it’s up to each of us to make the world a better place, not entirely by isolation but by human bonds, sacrifice, humility and charity. He was doing the best he could to be authentic. He died much too soon, but those last days were his most teachable moments. We humans learn and grow only when we break down and break away from our security and adjustment. Chris did this. Far from perfect but I applaud the honest attempt.
3:38 if you are now almost passing away don't forget to thank to God for giving you life and a happy family and don't forget to thank him for showing you the beautiful world he just created.
I love how people easily judge him for what he did. For what I bet no one of you have the guts to do. Criticizing is very easy when you are not in the position of the other person.
It's crazy but William F'ing Hurt almost stole this scene. To see the hard nosed, impenetrable, emotionless father finally lose it in such a way is hard to watch. One of the greatest movies of the modern era. RIP CM
I read into the wild when I was 16 years old. I thought Chris was dumb and the whole story had absolutely no meaning. Now 26 can only sort of understand what Chris was trying to tell me, and I feel completely different than I did at 16. Weird
Go travel. Take a camera and see the world on your own and maybe it will begin to make more sense. I think a lot of us are on the same journey, just in separate stages
I always remember the scene in LA when he sees an image of himself having a good time in a bar - and leaves abruptly. It is SO ironic that his last words (Happiness only real when shared) reflect a sentiment that any of those yuppies in that bar could have told him in two seconds. I am NOT trying to be dismissive, I am only trying to highlight the tragic irony.
Just "knowing" something isn't enough. You have to truly understand and acknowledge something. There is many wisdom we hear every day but only little is that we understand and live after it. peace
People see inspiration in this guy and I only see selfishness. A guy so self centered that he thought the world owed him something more than day to day life that everyone lives. That somehow there was more for him than everyone else or that everyone else was too stupid to realize how boring their lives were. And in the end as he lays dying, cold , hungry, and alone the truth hits him. The very things he was running from are what make life so great. Family, friends, relationships and community are essential to humanity and existence. It's a shame he had to learn that lesson when it was too late.
I think both are right. One is coming from lonelyness and the other one is looking for lonelyness. Humans need both to survive in this world. Remember that Chris said "Happyness only real when shared" when he was dying. So we have to care about that circumstance. Otherwise is not fare for him, and the movie is not fare for him too.
What are the other movie endings you love?

Chris is a hero for me, he lived how he wanna lived in the way he loved... leaving everything in life and go "into the wild" and feel the life and explore life to it's best... the
bravest man I ever learn about!
And now his journey is shared with all of us. His happiness was real ;)
What? Bravest? What kind of man do you actually know? "hapiness only real when shared" Only means that he regret to die alone, to not have a companion in his adventure, in fact, the more people you need to be happy, more unhapiness will you find.
The most life changing movie ever
This scene is so haunting
i realize how precious and important to be companied and surrounded by your loved one.
You are not alone my friend… i feel the same way …. We are with you
Thank you.
The ultimate escape from narcissistic parents. In the end, he still wins. Rest in peace Chris, you inspired a great many.
Brett William im one of them being inspired
Yeah, living your life to spite other people is a brilliant way to live (and die).
And don't the circumstances we live in have an effect on the problems in our head?
TupacLives Sure that's true, but what I meant is that it's more important what you're runnig towards than what you're running from... (maybe you didn't read the whole post)
fmpereiradasilva the movie may have glorified him a bit. He made quite a few mistakes along the way and only realized that when it's too late. A sad ending, it could've been better had he been wiser :(
fmpereiradasilva No one deserves this though.
fmpereiradasilva - yes,indeed...no matter where you go, there you are. His obsessive-selfish behavior is intrinsic to the story and ultimately the cause of his demise.....its beautiful though, how he realized it in the end.
Im speechless about this movie❤️❤️❤️🎉🎉🎉...
I just taught my comment is necessary here once and for a lifetime....
0:45 onwards -No words to describe this actor. Everyone's so great in this movie. Besides the story Eddie vedder's song's are amazing. At the end Hard sun music just adds to the emotions u feel at that moment. I wish there where more great movies like this
"Hey boss, the movie is almost done, is the ending sad enough for the audience?"
"No, we need more"
*adds father crying*
"How about now?"
"More"
*adds final thoughts*
"Now?"
*adds Chris running into parent's arms*
"I think it's sad enough now"
"I want to fuck them up, Frank."

JcobNav98 nice one I like :)
funniest thing this year
You are right, but holy shit: for me - it works !
We all run to find that simplicity... What a good way to resume it all... I know I did, and I'm deeply happy to have found it.
Beautiful words.
And i hope when someday i read this comment I'll laugh it out and tell how strong i was for not giving up!
Heyy! Whoever is ready this! Things get better. Because emotions come and go! You have to be a strong minded person.
Im sexy now. Ok bye😂
Ricky Lahey he actually found 30kg, he had died anyway
***** It's not so much that the thought itself was particularly profound, it was the way he came about his conclusion that is memorable.
He went to the furthest extremes to expand and develop his own personal philosophy. Many of us feel comfortable in our current state not to take chances. It took a lot of courage to do what he did, and that's why he's become an icon and a modern hero to many.
I agree!!
Dam it he left me speechless .. How impressive how brave how crazy how deep how nonsense how everything all fall into so many parts when I watched this movie .. A vision in my head to do so but a vision in my head to embrace life too
this made me cry. i love this movie!
Rest in Peace Chris, you'll forever be remembered as a hero :( god bless u
Hero?
What exactly did this clown do that was heroic. ?
Stupid would be more appropriate.
Money buys food.
Idiot burns money.
You know the rest.
peddle "Idiot" dies happier than most people are in any moment in their life
***** speak for yourself sad sack.
Personally I perfer to enjoy nature and live at the same time
peddle You don't seem so happy, attacking me with little provocation, go ahead and lie to me but don't lie to yourself.
I finished watching the movie in class today, was so sad that he ended up dying
0:18-0:32 I love those scenes
People who he met on his journey

Heartbreaking.
So in the future you have shared memories you can talk or laugh about together.
thats cruel that life is like that
William Hurts' best scene ever.
You my hero, you real happines!!!
this movie is such an emotional rollercoaster i swear man. 😢 its beautiful
The last and most heartbroken part. Always makes me cry too both as a mom and as a daughter... its really goes to the deep in one´s heart....
god damn the ending freaked the fuck out of me.
This quarantine I seen a masterpiece
Seen it 3 times still cry a lot.
I empathize with Christopher a lot.
The last bit is pure genuis. Hard to understand but very relatable
It truly is....miss my mom. So glad for what we shared, including the birth of my daughter.
i miss my mom too
im only 22 me mum passed away in 2020 and i dont knw how i'll get thru the life without her.
@umairbaig6149 day at a time man, and with the people you still got ...condolences and stay strong
@@umairbaig6149hope you're doing well brother 🙏
Can't live with people, can't live without them.
Im the only one thinking the ending werent about "Happines is only real when shared" but it actually was about "When you forgive, you love. And when you love, God’s light shines upon you."
Just like the ron father figure of alex told him in the top of the mountain. You can see in the ending scene when hes saying " "If I were smiling and running into your arms, would you see then what I see now?"
and hes looking for the shine in the sky, but can find it.
You're going to take a journey into the great unknown, the question that everybody since the dawn of mankind has wondered and you have to do it with your chin held high.
thanks for uploading this, always loved this movie.
I came here to cry again.
Well, I loved this movie. In the end, it looks like he made peace with the Lord. This makes all the difference how I feel about his death. He thanked the Lord for his good life and he said God Bless all....
and then I cried, I hope you found what you were looking for Chris ❤ Your story lives on.
This guy deserves many awards for his career best acting 😍🙏🏻
I have had a happy life and thank the Lord. God bless all!
William Hurt, what a giant.
That's one of the few quotes that is still important to me at my age.
This quote is actually true, only when lovers combine do they know and share happiness.
This was so heartbreaker i can't event cope...So fucking sad. Such a lonely death...
one of the best films ever made
One of the best movies ever
Same goes for you buddy
This is such a great movie!... Yet... so sad at the same time... 😔
I love this message...
"You were right, old Hoss: you were right." (Jack London, "To Build a Fire")
The ending gets me every time and to die out there alone for days weeks months, very heartbraking and no way for anyone to die like that. 😞
I really broke in tears ...really powerful ending😭
Sean Pean done a very good job directing this masterpiece
It's crazy but William F'ing Hurt almost stole this scene. To see the hard nosed, impenetrable, emotionless father finally lose it in such a way is hard to watch. One of the greatest movies of the modern era. RIP CM
These damn onions ;-;
I think a lot of us are on the same journey, just in separate stages
damn thus came out 10yrs ago I feel old
William Hurt at 1:03 God that gets me every time.
There is many wisdom we hear every day but only little is that we understand and live after it. peace
Cried likee a baby 😪
This moment makes me cry
I wonder who could dislike this video
What a tragic yet beautiful ending to an amazing story
R.I.P Christopher :, (
People see inspiration in this guy and I only see selfishness. It's a shame he had to learn that lesson when it was too late.
david sandlin agree
So glad there was no Twitter or Instagram back then.
i really want to cry every time I see his father... But the when the sunshine hits him i am at least satisfied a bit..
"what if i were smiling and running into your arms
would you see then what i see now?"
Man is cruelest animal.
Man has ruined this world, please do not destroy the wilderness too
TD
who can control their tears ....? I just can't
"Happiness Is Only Real When Shared" makes perfect sense to me!
This was his greatest insight.
