Good video. I grew up with the Superman of the black and white television show and buying the silver age comics. I remember the first time seeing the Max Fleiser cartoons and being absolutely blown away. I love the morality and fun science fiction throughout all of that “old” Superman. What are your thoughts?

But my god when I went back and watched the Fleiser cartoons I was blown away. One Superman story that I think deserves to be near the top of the list is Superman Smashes The Klan. Based on storyline in the 1940’s radio serial, the story shows Superman facing off against his universe’s version of the KKK and the original radio show actually managed to put a huge dent of the Klan’s public image and drastically reduced it’s recruitment. I’ll always have affection for Superman: Exile not only because I grew up during that arc but the science fiction and space elements of the Supes mythology are some of my favorites. The recent really good Warworld saga completely stands on the shoulders of Exile.
@@TBATB there are three trade paperback volumes of it. They are all one-off contained stories written by different people. For example: Jeff Parker, Jeff Lemire, Matt Kindt, Dan Abnett, Andy Lanning, Chris Samnee, Michael Avon Oeming, JM DeMatteis, Giuseppe Camuncoli, Sal Buscema, Chris Weston, Pia Guerra, Joëlle Jones, Yildiray Cinar, Tom DeFalco, Wes Craig, Rob Williams, Pete Woods
Why not include actual Kelly run instead of 775 out of context of it? Ie that by the 775 Superman already killed Zod and his 2 cronies, which is the fact that is brought up in 777 and Superman is Afraid that anyone will actually discover it. And the fact that All of this ends up in 805 the way it does.
Fun list! If you haven’t read Superman: The Kansas Sighting I highly recommend it! I am glad to see Space Age getting the recognition it deserves. Maybe my favorite DC comic since King and Gerad’s Mister Miracle!
Great list! I had the honor of having Mark Waid sign my Kingdom Come and my Deluxe edition of Superman Birthright!! He even signed my Daredevil omnibus as well!
Nice list. I'm a huge fan of Geoff Johns' and James Robinson's run on Superman, and would love to see a New Krypton omnibus. Until then the trade paperbacks will have to suffice. There's an Absolute Superman by Geoff Johns coming out soon, which would make my list. Some older stories from the 90s were great; Time and Again and Panic In The Sky while out of print, we're fun.
#Superman I grew up with Superman TAS,just DCAU Superman in general. So,everytime I read a Superman book,I hear Tim Daly and or George Newbern in my head when I read Clark's lines. Great video! I rarely see comic Superman vids.
You know what, I’m a huge Batman fan personally, with superman probably my second favorite of the classic DC trinity of heroes, and you know what, I’ve been wanting to get into Superman’s comics like I have with Batman in the past but, much like Batman himself I haven’t been super sure where to start and this may give me a decent starting point with Superman’s decades of comic stories
Nice list. I just finished Man of Steel, that one was alright story-wise. Haven't read most of others on your list, and I'll check them out someday. I'm waiting for lower/normal retail price for Superman: Up in the Sky hardcover, that book is too expensive right now.
#superman - Excellent video. Superman is often such a misunderstood character, it saddens me that people find him boring. As for my favorite Superman story, there are so many great ones. The most recent one I really enjoyed as Joker arriving in Metropolis for the first time and testing Superman. It was such a good dissection of both characters.
You are so spot on to recommend The Space Age by Mark Russell. Originally I picked it up because of Allred only to discover that Russell is definitely the best new writer to come into the industry the last few years. And if you haven't, you must check his One-Star Squadron to be even more impressed by his writing. On the other hand, I don't understand how anyone can place All-Star Superman anywhere but at No.1. That book is THE definitive Superman story. I believe DC must rename the oversized Hardcover by omitting the phrase 'All-Star'. That book must be called ABSOLUTE SUPERMAN, period.
All Star Superman was my number one book for many years. Maybe it’s recency bias, or maybe after so many reads it’s lost some of its magic. But for my Up in the Sky is my absolute favorite.
You really need to check out 'Superman: Exile.' But ... for that to really hit home, you need to read John Byrne's run -- particularly, the arc in the pocket universe where he encounters alt-universe versions of Superboy (i.e., younger version of himself) and the three Phantom Zone criminals. Otherwise, nothing in 'Exile' makes sense, emotionally speaking. And it's worth it. 'Exile' is one of the best Superman stories ever told.
@@TBATB No, opposite. I really enjoyed it but when I usually watch same Top 10 Superman books videos, it's always the same: All Star, Rebirth, and yada yada. It's nice to see something recent added to someone's list.
Great list though I feel there were a few honorable mentions you missed I'll list some of em 1. Superman grounded 2. Superman For tomorrow 3. Superman Lois and Clark 4. Final Days Of Superman 5. The death and return of Superman story arc 6. Superman American Alien 7. Jeph Loabs Superman Run 8. Superman Red Son 9. Superman Where is thy sting 10. Superman peace on earth 11. Superman Smashes the Klan 12. Superman Brainiac 13. Jeph Loabs batman/superman run 14. Phillip Kennedy Johnsons Action comics run 15. Superman and the Authority
My first #Superman book was unfortunately the start of Scott Lobdell's run in New 52. Not exactly the best place to start, but luckily.something caused me to not soon after read All-Star Superman and ever since it's been my favorite.
You left out Red Son by Mark Millar. But good video! Some of the books I haven’t read yet, but I’ll definitely check them out. Thank you for the recommendations!
@@JohnnyComelately-eb5zv it’s a comic book man. If you read it instead of looking and hearing, you will know that is exactly the opposite. It’s heavy criticism to dictatorships and communism.
One Superman that's brand new is the Warworld Saga by Phillip Kennedy Johnson that spans 3 tpbs starting with Warworld Rising then The Arena finally Warworld Revolution.
What omnibus do you recommend from Superman? Superman and Hulk are my favorites followed really close by Batman. I love me a good Superman/Darkseid dynamic story.
Sadly Superman only has 4 current Omnis. We are getting a few more in the future but rn we have Superman rebirth, death and return, Grant Morrison, and Exile!
@@TBATB out of the ones you mentioned which Superman Omni as my first would you recommend? And I will be in the lookout for future Superman omnibus 🤞. Btw, loving your videos, have recently been in a crazy omnibus spending spree 😂. Getting all the Hulk omnibus, TMNT IDW, Both Batman animated omnibus and with your help all the omnibus needed to read final crisis for the exception of seven soldiers. Thanks for the content and new subscriber.
I would add Superman: Brainiac by Geoff Johns and Superman: The Warworld Saga by Phillip Kennedy Johnson. Also Action Comics #775 by Joe Kelly if we're counting single issues.
I love brainiac but I didn’t want John’s to have too many slots. I can’t wait for the absolute!! I bought war world but I heard you need to read Superman authority first and I don’t own that.
Superman secret origin is my all time favorite superman comic. And doesn't get talked about3nough. If a non-comic book reader asks me why I like comics, I give them Secret Origin. It's great for new readers.
On your Part II list, please don't forget "Red Son", "Distant Fires" and "The Death of Superman". (Yes, that last one is controversial with regards to the comics industry but some great fight scenes!)
Interesting list. I'm curious how come you didn't include other omnis of Superman like Morrison's or the Death and Return of Superman. Thanks for posting and keep it going! #Superman
Entered! The new 52 Superman is not my favorite incarnation of the man of steel haha and death and returns is a touch too 90s for me but I’ll give it another shot soon!
Johns' whole run including Legion of 3 Worlds is really good. Taken together its basically a cover album of Superman's greatest hits. I don't think there is any essential point he doesn't hit and he nails all of them, especially the Legion.
@@TBATB honestly I’m sure most don’t even hear it, but since I’m very sensitive to sounds I was losing my mind haha but still had to watch your video loved all the reviews and going to get some of the books you mentioned thank you! 😎
geoff johns did get his start with richard donner but not on Superman 2. He was way to young when that film came out. He started working for donner in the 90’s
I know it's 5 months late on this, but an issue that has always stood out to me because i went through once upon a time : The Adventures of Superman Vol 1 #462 Homeless for the Holidays.
I've never read a comic before and it seems overwhelming to know where to even start. Can anyone tell me where to find the hardcover books that include multiple issues or a complete series? I never see them at bookstores or Target/Walmart, is it only an online thing? Any help will be appreciated, thank you.
Hello ! If you wanted to find books online your best bet is a local comic book store or a book store. Both are great places but you will usually pay what is called “cover price” You know how on the back of the book is says a price, in store you will usually pay the full amount. I am usually way more open to spending full price on a book if I am supporting a local comic shop vs a Barnes and Nobel. You are usually much better off tho buying books online as they sell them 30%-50% off of that cover price! We have a video on the best places to purchase. Our sponsor is Organic Price Books and they are an incredible place. You can also try Instock Trades or Cheap Graphic novel’s. Other places that would be less ideal are target.com and Amazon.com They will be a touch more expensive but what makes them much worse is they do not package the books at all. I go there as last resort. If you have any questions always feel free to ask! We also have a great discord if you want to make some comic book friends to help you along your journey.
Honestly I’ve never seen the Superman from 79 or Superman 2 in their entirety I’ve heard they are good and still hold up but, the parts I always caught on cable just seemed cheesy to me having seen way better flying effects and things in Superman movies and comic book movies in general but, I may check them out before reading anything Geoff Johns on this list
I definitely think they are worth it but if you watch them, it’s better to watch the Directors cut! Have you ever watched the old Max Fleischer Superman cartoon?
@@TBATB the problem i have with the absolute that DC announced is that i get that Gary Frank was the most recognizable artist working with Geoff on Superman but this way we lost so many good stories that could have been added if we simply got a line of absolutes called Superman by Geoff Johns. I think they should have continued with the simple strategy: single storylines and graphic novels can get the absolute and the runs get the omnibus. So we get a Birthright Absolute, a Secret Identity Absolute, an Absolute with all the Alan Moore stories, not one for Up in the sky (which i find to be a pretty overrated book, it's good but not a masterpiece) and hope for a line of omnibus for Byrne and Johns
It's like my personal favourite list is mentioned in this video except I'd like to replace Secret Origin with Secret Identity by Kurt Busiek and I'll exchange rank 3 and 4
@TBATB I used to not get why people liked him thinking him to op. But I got into him and read the rebirth era stuff first. I heard up in the sky is another good one. I also went and watched a lot of the cartoons and movies.
Recently got into Superman. Gotta thank a lot of redditors for their recommendations. (Omar from Near Mint Condition has the most definitive reading order, from my extensive research.) Superman: The Animated Series aka STAS by Bruce Timm and company is a hell of watch for people trying to get into Superman. So much love and passion from the team that brought us Batman: The animated series. I’ve now read a ton over the last few months. Here’s my list: 1. All-Star Superman by Grant Morrison 2. Peace on Earth by Paul Dini 3. Superman: All Seasons 4. What’s funny about truth, justice, and the American way? (Also the basis for the animated movie: Superman vs. The Elite.) 5. For the man who has everything 6. Superman: Birthright 7. Man of Steel by John Byrne 8. Up, Up, and Away 9. Up in the sky 10. Superman: Red Son (don’t like the animated movie as much due to content trims and unnecessary changes) HM: Superman: Secret identity, Superman: Kryptonite, Lois and Clark, Patrick Gleason omnibus, Death of Superman, and Superman smashes the klan. Camelot falls is a great read for people tired of his origin stories, and everyone trying to humanize the hell out of him, which are simply way too many! Also #superman
@@SriMJ54 I think when I was scanning my bookshelves, my main concern was keeping it to Superman, standalone stories, and I completely passed over absolute Justice league worlds greatest superheroes for forgetting that there’s one of the best Superman and Batman and Shazam stories inside.

So far. I have read every collected edition Superman from John Byrne up to Superman and Lois' Wedding. I was not a big fan of John Byrne Superman run. The lie Pa Kent did saying Superman and Clark were raised together was stupid. I did not learn to love Superman until I got to the Exile and Other Stories Omnibus and I have been enjoying everything since.
Our world's at war Panic in the sky The death of superman The dominus effect King of the world All star superman The golden age omnibus vl1 Superman vs Darkseid Superman Batman World's Finest Superman Doomed
Why not the color Yellow because his logo also has that color. Of all the stories my favorite is The Man of Steel is my favorite. Number 1 should’ve been Action Comics Archives 1 or its modern equivalent. You can’t make a list of Superman’s best comics without his first appearance. The story that introduced him. Well, at least in my list it need to be. Good video. I love the story of Damian and Jonathan. Bendis and DC had to ruin them
#superman I have most of these and come to think of it, I seem to have issues with the artists on some of these which diminish the story to me...controversial but can't stand Quietly and Alred art. I need to find that hc of the tom king book

Superman is my favorite, as well. Action Comics 775 and the Adventures of Superman (2013-2014) are some I would include in.
I’m not sure if I’ve read Adventures of Superman. Who did it?
Great video. A few of my favorite superman books are Godfall, earth one Superman and For tomorrow.
I haven’t heard of Godfall!
Fun list! If you haven’t read Superman: The Kansas Sighting I highly recommend it! I am glad to see Space Age getting the recognition it deserves. Maybe my favorite DC comic since King and Gerad’s Mister Miracle!
We need a deluxe of it badly!
Great list! I had the honor of having Mark Waid sign my Kingdom Come and my Deluxe edition of Superman Birthright!! He even signed my Daredevil omnibus as well!
That is awesome! I would love to meet him someday!
I can’t wait for the absolute!
#Superman
I grew up with Superman TAS,just DCAU Superman in general. So,everytime I read a Superman book,I hear Tim Daly and or George Newbern in my head when I read Clark's lines. Great video! I rarely see comic Superman vids.
Ahhh I grew up with them too and super friends re runs haha
Hi From Italy! (New follower!!) Great Channel!
Hi friend! Best vacation of my life was to your country. Hiking Cinque Terre was unforgettable!
Are there any stories that I recommended that you seem interested in?
Nice list. I just finished Man of Steel, that one was alright story-wise. Haven't read most of others on your list, and I'll check them out someday. I'm waiting for lower/normal retail price for Superman: Up in the Sky hardcover, that book is too expensive right now.
It just had a stealth restock 2 weeks ago!! I can’t recommend it enough!
It makes me sad when people don’t understand Superman but I hope they at least read a few of the books on this list!
Just found the page . Really enjoyed the reviews . Man of steel is a great read
Thank you for the kind words!
Love the character ! Always have! Quintessential Superhero
The best of the best!
@@TBATBalso great list man! Superman Brainiac is a great read too if you like gary frank art
I'm reminded of the Larry Niven essay, "Man of Steel, Woman of Kleenex".:)
Good video! Small nitpick that it’s Christopher REEVE, not Reeves :)
Thank you!
Nice video! Superman is my favourite carachter and my personal no 1 Superman story is Secret Identity by Kurt Busiek.
Ahhh that’s it I’m buying this book
@@TBATB let us know what you think about it!
And you're welcome in advance ;-)
You really need to check out 'Superman: Exile.'
But ... for that to really hit home, you need to read John Byrne's run -- particularly, the arc in the pocket universe where he encounters alt-universe versions of Superboy (i.e., younger version of himself) and the three Phantom Zone criminals.
Otherwise, nothing in 'Exile' makes sense, emotionally speaking.
And it's worth it. 'Exile' is one of the best Superman stories ever told.
That Omni should be being reprinted soon!
One of my favorites is from when I was a kid. The Sweetheart Superman Forgot
I haven’t heard of this before!
Great vid, I have almost all of these but surely Johns would be too young to have worked on Donner's Superman films?
I totally got mixed up! He was an assistant for Richard Donner but later in life!
I was not expecting Superman Space Age on the list honestly. I am glad that other people also find it enjoyable. Huge Respect.#superman
Were you not expecting it because you did not enjoy it?
@@TBATB No, opposite. I really enjoyed it but when I usually watch same Top 10 Superman books videos, it's always the same: All Star, Rebirth, and yada yada. It's nice to see something recent added to someone's list.
Great list though I feel there were a few honorable mentions you missed I'll list some of em
1. Superman grounded
2. Superman For tomorrow
3. Superman Lois and Clark
4. Final Days Of Superman
5. The death and return of Superman story arc
6. Superman American Alien
7. Jeph Loabs Superman Run
8. Superman Red Son
9. Superman Where is thy sting
10. Superman peace on earth
11. Superman Smashes the Klan
12. Superman Brainiac
13. Jeph Loabs batman/superman run
14. Phillip Kennedy Johnsons Action comics run
15. Superman and the Authority
I have the war war world companion that I need to read!
My first #Superman book was unfortunately the start of Scott Lobdell's run in New 52. Not exactly the best place to start, but luckily.something caused me to not soon after read All-Star Superman and ever since it's been my favorite.
Ahhh not the best place to start but an amazing follow up!
I'm surprised to see none of the Alam Moore stories on this list.
You left out Red Son by Mark Millar. But good video! Some of the books I haven’t read yet, but I’ll definitely check them out. Thank you for the recommendations!
Ahh that book is great!
Looks and sounds like extreme state propaganda. Tell me why it isn't?
@@JohnnyComelately-eb5zv it’s a comic book man. If you read it instead of looking and hearing, you will know that is exactly the opposite. It’s heavy criticism to dictatorships and communism.
@@Turn-the-Page Exactly. So it's pro U.S propaganda and it's anti Soviet propaganda. It sounds and looks terrible.
@@Turn-the-Page It looks like crude, idiotic, Cold War, propaganda. Good luck. No thanks.
One Superman that's brand new is the Warworld Saga by Phillip Kennedy Johnson that spans 3 tpbs starting with Warworld Rising then The Arena finally Warworld Revolution.
I’m excited to read that I just bought the compendium, but then I heard you need to reach Superman and the authority first which I don’t own.
Have you ever checked out Superman vs Muhammad Ali? That is fantastic. Great list.
No but I’ll check it out!
Oh, and maybe you could do, someday, a Top 10 cross-over list !
That’s a super great idea!!!
@@TBATB Ah, shucks 🙃
My favorite Superman omnibus rn is Superman rebirth!
@@TBATB thanks
My personal opinion, is if you want the best of the best, go read Action Comics #s 39-44. Golden age stuff.
Gonna check it out!
Joe Kelly & Doug Mankhe’s What’s So Funny About Truth, Justice, & the American Way, Action Comics #775. Best Superman story ever written.
Adding it to my list! Thanks for sharing it!
Superman secret origin is my all time favorite superman comic. And doesn't get talked about3nough. If a non-comic book reader asks me why I like comics, I give them Secret Origin. It's great for new readers.
Such an amazing book!
On your Part II list, please don't forget "Red Son", "Distant Fires" and "The Death of Superman". (Yes, that last one is controversial with regards to the comics industry but some great fight scenes!)
I actually just read the death omnibus! Some parts with the alien Dinosuars were too 90s for me but most of it I loved!
It’s a tragedy we don’t have an omnibus yet but at least we’re getting an absolute this year
That beep had me losing my mind 😂 thanks for the recommendations though 😎
Sorry I don’t use background music anymore! I tried to make it work for awhile haha
@@TBATB honestly I’m sure most don’t even hear it, but since I’m very sensitive to sounds I was losing my mind haha but still had to watch your video loved all the reviews and going to get some of the books you mentioned thank you! 😎
Superman 1978 has to be one of the best, specially for a fan of reeves Superman. All good recomendations
I will have to read it!
Definetely gonna have to try and get Last son and birthright
I’d love to hear what you think about them!
Do you think DC will make a Superman animated or JL animated omnibus like they did for Batman and Batman and robin adventures which I just purchased?
Superman was announced but sadly it is only a compendium! Hopefully it sells well enough to get us an omnibus someday!
@@TBATB Bummer, any date on when that will come out? How about All-Star Superman as a omnibus?🤔

geoff johns did get his start with richard donner but not on Superman 2. He was way to young when that film came out. He started working for donner in the 90’s

I know it's 5 months late on this, but an issue that has always stood out to me because i went through once upon a time : The Adventures of Superman Vol 1 #462 Homeless for the Holidays.
You are never too late! I’m gonna look into this issue!
Hey Can you please do a Wolverine comics video next
That’s a great idea thank you!
Your welcome Bub
I've never read a comic before and it seems overwhelming to know where to even start. Can anyone tell me where to find the hardcover books that include multiple issues or a complete series? I never see them at bookstores or Target/Walmart, is it only an online thing? Any help will be appreciated, thank you.
Hello !
If you wanted to find books online your best bet is a local comic book store or a book store.
Both are great places but you will usually pay what is called “cover price”
You know how on the back of the book is says a price, in store you will usually pay the full amount.
Other places that would be less ideal are target.com and Amazon.com
They will be a touch more expensive but what makes them much worse is they do not package the books at all. I go there as last resort.
If you have any questions always feel free to ask!
We also have a great discord if you want to make some comic book friends to help you along your journey.
@@TBATB thank you for replying
Is there anything else I can answer to help get you started on comics? 😊
If you haven't read it, you should check out Superman: Earth One. There are three volumes. The first volume is the best, but they are all good.
I just read my first Earrh one book! I started with Green Lantern!
@@TBATB I think Green Lantern is the only one I haven't read yet. So far the only one I haven't liked was Batman: Earth One.
#superman
Great list, hard to pick with so many great Supes stories
Haha it was hard and I did go back and fourth on a bunch haha
We really need some Superman by Geoff Johns omnibus and Superman by John Byrne omnibus
The absolute is one step in the right direction!!
It's like my personal favourite list is mentioned in this video except I'd like to replace Secret Origin with Secret Identity by Kurt Busiek and I'll exchange rank 3 and 4
I have to read that and grounded!
@@TBATB absolutely, just go for it and I'm sure you'll love it. The concept itself is worth reading, let alone the fantastic artwork and storyline
#superman just started getting into him after miss understanding superman for most my life I need more!!
I love Superman and hope you tell me what stories you read and love about him!
@TBATB I used to not get why people liked him thinking him to op. But I got into him and read the rebirth era stuff first. I heard up in the sky is another good one. I also went and watched a lot of the cartoons and movies.
@TBATB supermans wholesomeness, being more human than us all, kindness and companion. I got into superman recently, he's like ted lasso with a cape.
Recently got into Superman. Gotta thank a lot of redditors for their recommendations. (Omar from Near Mint Condition has the most definitive reading order, from my extensive research.)
Superman: The Animated Series aka STAS by Bruce Timm and company is a hell of watch for people trying to get into Superman. So much love and passion from the team that brought us Batman: The animated series.
I’ve now read a ton over the last few months. Here’s my list:
1. All-Star Superman by Grant Morrison
2. Peace on Earth by Paul Dini
3. Superman: All Seasons
4. What’s funny about truth, justice, and the American way? (Also the basis for the animated movie: Superman vs. The Elite.)
5. For the man who has everything
6. Superman: Birthright
7. Man of Steel by John Byrne
8. Up, Up, and Away
9. Up in the sky
10. Superman: Red Son (don’t like the animated movie as much due to content trims and unnecessary changes)
HM: Superman: Secret identity, Superman: Kryptonite, Lois and Clark, Patrick Gleason omnibus, Death of Superman, and Superman smashes the klan. Camelot falls is a great read for people tired of his origin stories, and everyone trying to humanize the hell out of him, which are simply way too many!
Also #superman
