    I think Frank Miller wrote The Dark Knight Strikes Again that way on purpose. He thought: "I wrote the best Batman story ever, now I'm gonna write the worst ever, just for fun!"

    Batman much like Spider-Man has always been my fav superhero but i never got to read comics, (finally got marvel comic app to read Spider-Man & daredevil) but I want physical copies of Batman’s. My parents actually bought me the “dark knight true story” book a few years ago and I have yet to read it but I will now before I actually buy a comic, knowing a lot more about Batman I had no idea it’s a very personal story to Paul Dini! I will definitely have to check out the BTAS tie in comic as well! Thanks for the recommendations!

      If you are looking for a cost-effective place to start DC has started printing books and what’s called the compact comic line. It’s $10 for a full story and so far for Batman. They have hush and court of owls both excellent places to start.

    Putting Morrison that low is a bummer. But props for putting it up at all. It is certainly not "new reader friendly" maybe past the first 4 issues.
    Though unconnected, I'd certainly add Gothic, and most importantly, Arkham Asylum. While Final Crisis is a favorite, It's not necessary if you're only reading his Batman, as all relevant parts are shown in flashback in the issues from the "Time and the Batman" book.
    I've never heard that Zero Year was mandated. I know that Scott didn't want to undo Year One. But it was getting harder to work around it.
    If you're gonna count all of Morrison as one spot, I see no need to treat Snyder any different. Makes room for more recommendations.
    Also, the hate Superheavy gets is ridiculous. It's easily the best Gordon story, and ranks second for me in Snyder Batman work, only behind Black Mirror.
    Many good bits from New 52 Batman were contributions from Tynion. Lest we forget that the two storied both weekly series, with James listed first. I imagine getting Rebirth Detective was a "thank you" for keeping that Bat-train a-rollin' in Scott's absence.
    I just wish he'd had the same enthusiasm when he finally got on Batman proper. He seemed pretty jaded by that point, and jumped prematurely when Substack proved to be profitable.
    I certainly don't hate Tom King's run like some do, but I don't love it either. I mean, the best issue of the whole Bat/Cat thing was written by the other Tom! It's funny that the dream stuff gets dunked on so much. The Professor Pyg issue is my favorite of the 85!
    But now he is constantly extending his work with the characters and world of Gotham. And I just can't get excited for any of it. I wanted Batman/Catwoman, but by the time it finally became available in a collected format, I just wasn't jazzed enough to buy it, nor have I since.
    Again, to consolidate and expand, I'd just make a Frank Miller spot. Explain which books you like and which ones you hate. His stuff is all kinds of quality. I'm the world's biggest All-Star Batman fan. Anyone that takes it seriously seems to overlook how beautifully farcical it is.
    But no doubt, Dark Knight Returns and Year One are a lovely juxtaposition. Write the last Batman story ever, followed by the first. Few get to do that. Snyder did with Zero Year and Last Knight on Earth. My favorite is Morrison doing All-Star Superman then New 52 Action.
    Dini's Hush trilogy is an absolute must if you read the original story. Hush is a fun jump on title because of how much it features of Batman's universe. But the twists fall pretty flat. Dini retroactively made him one of the best of the Rogues gallery.
    But to mention some extra Loeb that IS solid start to finish AND fun as hell is his work on Superman/Batman. I recommend this title to new readers all the time that have an interest in both characters.
    Certainly some surprising omissions! Despite being a Joker story, I think Killing Joke is an essential read. I especially recommend it to non-comic fans FIRST. I didn't feel this way until I came home one day.
    My GF had (finally!) pulled a book from the shelf to read. KJ has the killer cover and an un-intimidating looking length. But she was SHOOK. I think it's a brutal tale that tosses you in the deep end, and sometimes, that the type of reaction that ignites a desire for MORE.
    The recent deluxe edition of Under the Red Hood is absolutely incredible. Prefacing it with Death in the Family is optional, but not required, since Red Hood fills in all the important details. This is easily a contender for my top spot.
    It's funny, as I love Captain America, and the Winter Soldier arc was coming out at almost the same time. The central conceit of both stories are near identical.
    But rereading it recently made me realize just how well it holds up. It's a tale that's timeless and relatable. As a teen, I identified with the rebellious troublemaker hacking off heads in the story. But at 37, it's the idea of losing a child and having to live with it that is unfathomable. It's powerful stuff.

    • @TBATB
      @TBATB  10 місяців тому +1

      Wow! This response was well thought out and took a lot of effort!
      You really know your Batman comics! I totally get what you’re saying about Morrison - his stuff can be a bit heavy for newbies, but kudos for mentioning “Gothic” and “Arkham Asylum.” They’re classics. I liked Arkham Asylum but the art was to good at making me freaked out.
      Killing joke I use to love but as I’ve grown older ive liked it a lot less. Have you read Moores thoughts on how the book has aged?
      I think hush is fun, but the art is better than the story.
      I think it’s great that you know so much about Batman and have such strong opinions!
      What would your list be?

    • @MykeHavoc
      @MykeHavoc 10 місяців тому +1

      @@TBATB I know Moore doesn't think much of KJ. But he only wrote it as a favor to Brian Bolland. And that art is worth the read alone. Have you heard that idea that once art is out in the world, it no longer belongs to the artist? That's how I feel about the Alan Moore situation. He's a grump and eventually grows to hate everything 😆 the importance or impact of a piece isn't really up to them. If anything, the fact that Moore dislikes it almost makes me want to like it even harder just to spite him (if it wasn't already obvious, I'm not the guy's biggest fan. Just to illustrate, I own several thousand collected editions, but not one copy of Watchmen 😆 I've read and analyzed the crap out of it, but it's not something I'd ever pull off the shelf and start reading for pleasure.
      As far as a list of best/favorite stories, I'll have to get back to you. If you couldn't tell, this is the sort of thing I'd tear my hair out trying to figure out. But Red Hood is definitely on there. And Black Mirror. But then I'd want to add stuff like Batwoman, and that lacks the one thing to qualify 😆 So maybe it would have to be a Bat family list. Or maybe two lists. See? I'm already over complicating it.
      A list of books I'd recommend to new readers is the easiest, as we've already discussed most of those. So maybe three lists? I'm a mess, bro lol

    There's still a lot I haven't read yet but right now I'd say my top ten is:
    1. War Games (I know, controversial)
    2. Alan Grant/Norm Breyfogle's run
    3. Dead Reckoning
    4. Detective Comics by James Tynion IV
    5. A Lonely Place of Dying
    6. Ed Brubaker's run
    7. The Long Halloween
    8. No Man's Land
    9. Dark Moon Rising
    10. Year One
    (And to be a bit more controversial, I'm not the biggest fan of Hush or Morrison's run, the latter in large part because I hate Damian, the former just because I don't think it's written well. I'm also not the biggest fan of The Killing Joke, and while I do enjoy TKR I don't think it's a good Batman comic. To close off the dishonorable mentions, while I don't dislike Snyder and Capulo's run, I do think it's strongly overrated).

    1. Gerry Conway's run with a lot of Don Newtons art. Eventually introduces Croc and the first incarnation of Jason Todd.
    2. Ten Nights of the Beast - Jim Starlin and Jim Aparo art.
    3. The Cult - Jim Starlin and Bernie Wrightson
    4. Alan Grant and Norm Breyfogle's Detective comics run. Lots of new and interesting villains introduced.
    5. Killing Joke
    6. Dark Knight returns
    7. Batman #1 - I have the Famous First Edition reprint and that book is awesome. I have not read a lot of Golden Age books because they're old and expensive. However, the commonly reprinted stuff like, Superman, Captain Marvel and the Flash that I have read is, in my opinion, not as good as that book. 2 Joker stories, 1 Hugo Strange tale & the first Catwoman tale. Get a reprint!
    8. Bob Haney and Jim Aparo on the Brave and the Bold. Even the stuff after Bob Haney left was good.
    9. Batman vs the Incredible Hulk with art by the incomparable Jose Luis Garcia Lopez. In Treasury edition size. Any of those Treasury sized special editions from the 70's are great and filled with reprints from the 30's to the 70's.
    10. The greatest Batman stories ever told. Another reprint book that is great for a newbie with choice stories.
    I'd also recommend Power records Batman stories. Some are just audio, but some were Book and Record sets with original stories and Neal Adams art. Just collect them for the "album" art! Here's a sample ua-cam.com/video/I-S5AadRE_c/v-deo.html

      The Joker War Saga, Road To No Man's Land and No Man's Land, Legacy belongs in my list as well 😉
      The majority of Morrison's work as well as Synder's contribution to the Batman storylines are all top shelf in my humble opinion, also Chuck Dixon and Warren Ellis don't get the true acknowledgement of their Batman work which is quite sad because it is totally well deserved.

    - Batman by Grant Morrison for me has been the beginning of the end, the introduction of Damian Wayne led Tim Drake to an oblivion of uselessness in which he still is, ruined Talia that went from a great assassin tormented between the devotion to her father and the love for Batman to a mix between "I'm an evil empress wannabe" and "I'm Batman's ex-girlfriend AND i'm gonna ruin his life in the most bullshit way possible", Morrison is also the responsible for making Batman so over the top with things like Bruce implanting in himself a secret persona like he is freaking Professor Hugo Strange or beating Darkseid, Batman is an extremely good detective and fighter...that's it, no technology genius or smartest man in the universe like he is freaking Reed Richards.
    Also the Joker stuff was horrendous, with stories like Arkham Asylum Morrison basically opened the floodgate to any writer to essentially write Joker in whatever way the wanted assassinating the very concept of a characterization and it's pointless because he justifies that because "Well Joker had so many characterizations over the years that i had to find a solution and used his madness to explain it" ok, what about Penguin? He is sane, when captured he goes to Blackgate not Arkham but he had different characterizations during the years from intellettual gang leader in the Golden Age, buccaneer of birds in the Silver Age, gentleman thief during the Bronze Age, monstruos freak in the early 90's to nowadays boring mobster...how are you gonna explain this?
    - Batman by Scott Snyder is overrated, Zero Year is a very good Batman story that deserves the Absolute treatment, The Court and City of Owls is good but not a masterpiece due to the villain: a cabala of the most influential of Gotham, that run the city from the shadows and that have done so for decades maybe centuries is a very good concept but then, in order to accomplish ANYTHING, these guys need to use ninja zombies that wear an owl suit and that are frozen/unfrozen after/before their mission...WTF? Talons are a very idiotic concept especially tied to this serious and dark threat of the Court (moreover the Thomas Wayne Jr. thing seems something taken out from the most generic spanish soap-opera ever), Endgame is so over-the-top with Batman beating every Jokerized member of the Justice League that is simply ludicrous.
    - Tom King is a contender for worst Batman writer ever, at least Morrison wrote Gothic, Arkham Asylum (yeah it has some problems but with the interpretation of "It's all a dream" they can be forgotten) and some good elements in his run (like the introduction of Professor Pyg).
    King has nothing, there is no good narrative arc, no masterpiece, not even a good story for a villain (the things he has done to Riddler are atrocious)...and he turned Bruce into this pathetic, melodramatic, constantly weeping buffoon that slaps Tim for trying to comfort him after the whole Catwoman affair (moreover the fact that he had to ask for Catwoman's help for both Bane and Thomas Wayne is ridicolous, when i saw Batman say to Catwoman "break him" and she goes to defeat Thomas i was laughing my ass off, seemed a Pokemon battle, it just lacked "Cat i choose you"). Absolutely not a recommend, there's a reason why DC diminished Tom King's contract from 105 issues to 85 and why, to this day, there are no omnibus of this run: it was crap and it didn't sold

      @@TBATB huge fan of the Dennis O'Neil era as as an editor (especially with Moench, Dixon and Grant on Batman, Detective Comics and Shadow of the Bat).
      Milligan of that era is also great too.
      Previous Crisis on Infinite Earths i would say Dennis O'Neil (Top 3 greatest Batman writers), Steve Englehart (i know it's not exactly a run but man Englehart's Strange Apparitions is peak) and Len Wein (that guy was very good with Batman in a horror setting, it's a shame now he will never write that Tweedledum and Tweedledee story he had in mind), post 2000 i would say Brubaker with solid Batman stories and extremely good Gotham Central and Catwoman (before she got ruined by King), Paul Dini for remaining true to the characters (with a bit of very dark stories for guys like Mr.Zsasz and Firefly) and Tomasi was good (but i didn't like what he did with Mr.Freeze)

    • @Joenah5
      @Joenah5 9 місяців тому

      It's not too often you see someone who wasn't the biggest fan of Morrison or Snyder either (though I actually really liked a lot of what King did lol). Though with Snyder I do think the court of owls was a very solid arc that earns its acclaim, it's just it went so downhill after that.

    • @niccoloproia3678
      @niccoloproia3678 9 місяців тому

      @@Joenah5 i believe Morrison is acclaimed more for the fact that he is Morrison so when there is something so over the top that is ridiculous people just think "Well it's Morrison, it surely makes sense it's just me, i am too stupid to understand it" while for Snyder i am sure that everyone that describe his run as one of the greatest for the character simply started to read Batman with the New 52 due to the fact that it was a total reboot of the DC universe and wanted to start reading Batman, therefore, being their first run, they defend it till the end.
      Still i acknowledge some good stories to both:
      - Grant Morrison has Gothic and Arkham Asylum (if read thinking that the story is all a dream)
      - Snyder has Black Mirror, Zero Year that are awesome while Court of Owls and City of Owls compose a good narrative arc but it's not a masterpiece for any stretch of the imagination (the main villain is a mess while all that thing about Thomas Wayne Jr is so corny and stupid that seems a mix between a Silver Age story of Batman and an episode of Beautiful), i haven't read Gates of Gotham so maybe it is another good story.
      For Tom King mate absolutely nope, worst Batman writer ever (even more than Mike Barr), there is literally no good story in his run and i have read Killing Time and One Bad Day too and they're shit with the last one possibly being Riddler worst story, Penguin is my favourite enemy and when i saw in his series, written by King, Amanda Waller saying all that bullshit about Penguin being the only man even Batman couldn't put behind bars i rolled my eyes and thought "of course, he has become a freaking mob boss, it's like saying that Kingpin is the villain Spider-man fears the most because he can make all evidence and witnesses disappear when in his rogue's gallery you have guys like Carnage or Green Goblin" and stopped reading.
      He writes everyone out of character

    I stopped buying Batman when Grant Morrison started the Zur en Argh story. I hated that his Batman was insane. Came back when Dick Grayson was Batman and still didn't enjoy it so I dropped it again. When Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo took over is one of my favorite Batman runs. But I really didn't like Metal or Death Metal. Love Batman Adventures. I haven't read Detective Comics Rebirth but I do own the Omnibus, must read it. My sister bought Tom Kings run monthly, I got to read it... I loved some stories, hated others, not in my top anything. I enjoyed Black Mirror. I loved Year One. Hush is probably in my top 3. I like Dark Knight Returns, definitely a must read. Long Halloween and Dark Victory are Amazing! It took me a while to get into the Tim Sale art but I love it now. Knightfall was the story that got me into Batman Comics. I loved the whole No Mans Land era of comics. and one of my favorites that doesn't get much love is Batman Venom, where Batman gets addicted to the stuff that Bane uses.

    Why are you picking all the modern books what about strange apparitions what about all the great stories from the bronze age that was Batman when he lived in the penthouse in Gotham City when he didn't have the batcave those are some of the great Batman stories of all time that was Batman that is true self when he was a swashbuckling superhero not this god-like figure that can take down dark side That's not Batman he should never be on that power level Batman is a street level superhero who can be it on adventures like that when he's with the Justice League but Batman should never be able to just sit in the bat cave and decide to take off to apocalypse just because he can like he's done before That's so stupid
