Hello Sharon ❤ I appreciate your videos so much, I’ll be working on my first ever baby soon! Although, I have a question, what’s the difference between using distilled water and just regular tap water?
Is there a replacement for the glass and tile medium? I cannot find it in Canada, nor on Amazon USA. They seem to be out everywhere....I hears that a glazing medium is similar. Is this true? Thanks!
After I start the first limb, by the time I get done with the 3 other limbs and then the head, the first limb is already dry and ready for the next layer. Hope this helps! Sharon
Butterfly Baby Kisses Nursery one more question. When painting hair if i make a mistake can i wipe it off without damaging the previous layer? And if so what do i wipe it off with? Thank you.
If it's plaid folk art outdoor matte sealer, then it should not be shiny if it's being applied correctly - you need to use a mop brush and put it on a cosmetic wedge with the top ripped off for texture. You need to pounce the sealer on the vinyl in small sections. You need to wash your brush and change your cosmetic wedge frequently because if they get 'caked', you won't get a matte effect. Hope this helps.
I only bake Genesis products. But if you use an acrylic varnish and bake, I don't think it would harm the vinyl. I wouldn't bake for the usual 10 minutes though.
You can find the Folk Art Outdoor matte sealer on ebay. The glass & tile medium is available at their website and sometimes can be found at Joann's fabric craft store.
thanks for the video but I'm am new to this and I'm having a hard time with finding the glass and tile so I brought some acrylic Matt medium Please tell me what to mix it with Please
I don't know which acrylic matt medium you bought, but I only recommend Folk Art Glass & Tile Medium or Folk Art Outdoor Sealer. You mix them with the paint and distilled water. The amount of mixture will take practice. You will learn it as you go along. You can get the medium on Folk Art's website or sometimes on ebay. Hope this helps.
On Plaid Folk Art's website, or at Joann's fabrics or even ebay. Folk Art Outdoor sealer (matte) is the same stuff, so if you see that, you can use it too.
where do you storage your mix paint? room temperature or the fridge? Can you make a video of the baking process please? Between of how many layers of paint when do you bake the kit ? Have a lovely day 😊
I keep it at room temperature, right on my work space table. I cover it with saran wrap. It depends on how many layers of paint - when I feel it is done! Maybe 20, or more. Then I use a final coat of Genesis Thinning Medium on a cosmetic wedge which has the top ripped off (for texture). Then I bake in my Nu-Wave oven (I got on ebay) with the EXTENDER RING (very important so the heating element is raised higher to avoid burning the vinyl) at power level 6 for 10 minutes - then I repeat the baking when the vinyl cools. I use cloths to cover the bottom of the oven and place my vinyl parts on them so that none of them touch each other, and they don't touch the sides where there might be exposed metal. Hope this helps! When I get to the point of baking my next doll, I will do a video. Sharon
You need both. Acrylics need distilled water and Folk Art Outdoor Matte Varnish; Heat Set paints need paint thinner and I put a medium in with each batch.

I mix the glass & tile medium with every batch of paint. It helps to adhere to the vinyl better for me. I end up by adding Genesis thinning medium and bake it in my Nu-Wave oven twice.
Sorry - I will be doing more when I start painting again. You want a thin, watery mixture, but thick enough to stick to the vinyl. It takes some practice! Like anything else!

But what they send Me is Folk Art Floating Meduim said the makes floating colors easy. So I don't know what to do used or not, this is my very first time to do a reborn !
No, I don't coat the doll with just the medium first. Yes, my paints are Folk Art Acrylic Matte. I use Genesis thinning medium as my final coat, bake twice, and this acts as my sealer and adds some texture.
I am hearing that when painting eyebrows you have to get it right the first time with acrylics due to there is not much error time to wipe it off and redo it. Is that true?
Ok thank you ,this is my first reborn kit, waiting for it to come in the mail I'm going to use folk art an Apple barrel,I have been watch every video I can find, some people use half glass an tile half paint, but you use just some ,right ? like in the video, thank you so much for answering back😊
@@conniewallet4167 I don't recommend Apple Barrel paints as they don't provide enough pigment. It takes practice to know how much of each thing you add - the paint, the medium, and the water. You will get your own technique down once you practice! Hope this helps.
As someone who has just started watching tutorials for painting, can someone explain to me why the paint has to be pounced on, instead of just stroking it on with a sponge brush or something? Will it leave streaks? It just looks so slow and laborious to watch someone sit there and pounce. I could understand if you were doing a mottled area where you didn't want it completely covered, but when you're covering the entire surface anyway, it seems odd to watch someone just pounce over the same areas over and over again. Every time I watch someone do it, it seems like they just go over the same area over and over again. I'm thinking how many times do they think they have to pounce over it before they've covered it?
The reason for pouncing it is to give the vinyl the look of 'skin'. The vinyl is smooth so you need to pounce the paint to give it some pores like skin. Hope this makes sense.
I you click on my videos, you have the ability to sort by most popular (at least I do). The most popular videos are all tutorials. You should be able to find that in one of them. Thank you and good luck!
I only have experience with matte acrylics using distilled water and Plaid Folk Art Glass and Tile Medium or Plaid Folk Art Outdoor Sealer. I can't recommend anything else for this type of paint.
Oooh...i was told to use matte medium as a sealant for my acrylic paint ant my doll came out very sticky, bright pink and shiny.. He looked like he just came out someone bloody p****. I ended up scrubbing him down with baking soda and dish detergent. Most came off but hopefully he'll continue to keep some of the rose pink color I gave him. It was a cheap newborn manikan anyway but I still want to keep him. He look much better now and most stickiness is finally gone and all that excess pink.
Hi Born Again Reborns I ended up buying another one and when he arrives I will leave him in original condition. Which he has a peachy tone. He looked cute when I took a red crayon and lightly blushed his cheeks and chin and added a stork bite to his forehead. I even colored his elbows/knees. Even his nipples and the bottom of his family jewels......Until I got curious about the (Acrylics) and went all the way painting his whole body. Ohhh Boy what a Doozy lesson learned. 😆 never again
could you possibly make repeated videos of the process of how to paint using acrylic paint for example the first video could be of the skin tone along with mottling? Plz
It looks like a lot of trial & error and experimentation. And I like how you can use inexpensive craft paint instead of breaking the bank with expensive stuff.
Altogether I probably use about 30 coats - that's with multiple layers of mottling, creasing, veining and details. The painted hair is another story! Each strand of hair gets multiple layers for varying degrees of lightness and darkness. Hope this helps. Sharon
Don't give up - art is supposed to be messy 😉 I've been a professional artist for 30 years and have just finished my very first doll (never did dolls before). I work with acrylics and I mix my acrylics with Decor Ultra Matte. BEFORE painting, I coat the entire vinyl doll with Decor Ultra Matte so that the actual acrylic paint will adhere to the vinyl. Decor Ultra Matte is clear. I also use an acrylic paint extender, which delays drying time and makes the acrylic paint easier to spread. The Glass & Tile medium is also very good for adding to the acrylic paint so it adheres. It's imperative that you coat the vinyl doll with something like Decor Ultra Matte so that the paint will stick. Acrylics will crack on vinyl if they are not mixed with a medium that prevents this. I do not use any water at all when mixing paints for vinyl - water will not stick to vinyl 😉
im awaiting my first doll kit, and ive bought the tile medium as youve advised....just to ask do you seal the kits after painting? if so what do you use? thank you
I have a Nu-Wave oven in my garage and I use Genesis Thinning Medium mixed with Genesis Matte Varnish to seal and then bake. But you can just use the medium by itself to seal after your paint is set. No need to bake. Wait a day before using the medium. Make sure you stir the medium really well before using as the medium settles to the bottom. Tear off the top of a cosmetic sponge so it will leave a textured finish on the vinyl, and then use a mop brush to apply the medium to the sponge. This step takes some practice. You will most likely have to work in small sections at a time and make sure you are getting a matte finish as you go along. Work in natural daylight if possible. Clean your brush often while doing the seal coat and use a different cosmetic wedge often, as they don't matte when they are saturated. Hope this helps! Good luck. Sharon

Do you bathe the baby before you begin painting her? Do you use a primer on your reborn before you paint on the first flesh coat?
Yes, I bathe the baby in dawn dish detergent. I don't use a primer - I use the glass & tile medium and distilled water with the paint for every layer and seal at the end with either the glass & tile medium alone or use Genesis Thinning Medium and bake - twice.
Hi honey I love Your videos love Your tutorials but I need Your help on this product please .I know the Im supposed to use the Glass & tile Medium for glass. But what they send Me is Folk Art Floating Meduim said the makes floating colors easy. So I don't know what to do used or not, this is my very first time to do a reborn !
I never heard of floating medium. I use only the glass & tile medium.
@@lifewithsharonb5138 thank You !!
I have a question. Can “Dura Clear Gloss Varnish” replace glass and tile medium??
No, it doesn't. You can find the glass & tile medium from Plaid Folk Art's website. Or on ebay.
Butterfly Baby Kisses Nursery by any chance do u know about it any other project
do u coat the doll with the tile medium first and do u have to use Matt paint?
No, I don't coat the doll with just the medium first. Yes, my paints are Folk Art Acrylic Matte. I use Genesis thinning medium as my final coat, bake twice, and this acts as my sealer and adds some texture.
yes it's good thankyou x
Thanks for showing your technic.
I am hearing that when painting eyebrows you have to get it right the first time with acrylics due to there is not much error time to wipe it off and redo it. Is that true?
Not if you start with a very light layer first.
Butterfly Baby Kisses Nursery thanks.. I will keep that in mind..
Thanks for teaching us
Do you add the glass an tile medium to the paint for ever layer, color ?
Yes I do!
Ok thank you ,this is my first reborn kit, waiting for it to come in the mail I'm going to use folk art an Apple barrel,I have been watch every video I can find, some people use half glass an tile half paint, but you use just some ,right ? like in the video, thank you so much for answering back😊
I'm trying to find your videos on making a doll, but I'm not sure how to find all of them ?
@@conniewallet4167 Go to my channel. Go to videos. Sort by 'most popular'. All my tutorials are there.
Can you please do video,to show how you apply flesh tone, please, thank you
I you click on my videos, you have the ability to sort by most popular (at least I do). The most popular videos are all tutorials. You should be able to find that in one of them. Thank you and good luck!
Do you think craft smart acrylic paint will work?
Yes but not as well.
can i use any medium for air dry paints?
I only have experience with matte acrylics using distilled water and Plaid Folk Art Glass and Tile Medium or Plaid Folk Art Outdoor Sealer. I can't recommend anything else for this type of paint.
@@lifewithsharonb5138 Thank you !!
I’m useing this bc I ordered twin a kit coming in three days
Do you have a Facebook or a way I could talk to you one on one to get help I want to do my first doll and I'm scared of messing up
you can email me at butterflybabykisses nursery@gmail.com - Sharon
do you mix the usual water, coconut oil and dyes only?
I mix distilled water purchased from Shop Rite, acrylic paint, and folk art glass & tile medium only.
+Butterfly Baby Kisses Nursery thank youu so much !!!!💝💝💝
Is it equal amounts of paint and primer?
Yes, pretty much.
is it mixed with plain water?
what water can be used? is water regular?
I only used distilled water. It is inexpensive - about a buck from Shop Rite.
thank u!! ur videos are very helpful
I'm so glad!
Wow, I'm glad you were able to correct him. Sorry that happened.... It does take practice.
@@karenrobinson2007 I am so sorry to hear that.
How much distilled water did you use? Thanks
I didn't measure - I go by "eye".
could you possibly make repeated videos of the process of how to paint using acrylic paint for example the first video could be of the skin tone along with mottling? Plz
My next reborn will be done with Genesis Heat Set Paints. But the technique is the same. I will try and do a video soon.
It looks like a lot of trial & error and experimentation. And I like how you can use inexpensive craft paint instead of breaking the bank with expensive stuff.
I just got thiS And liked so
Much!
❤❤
love this! so helpful
how many coats do u need?
Altogether I probably use about 30 coats - that's with multiple layers of mottling, creasing, veining and details. The painted hair is another story! Each strand of hair gets multiple layers for varying degrees of lightness and darkness. Hope this helps. Sharon
Thank you!!
Why do you need to use distilled water? Xx
There are no minerals in the water to distort the paint & vinyl.
Thank you for sharing.
Thank you so much it was very helpful
I make a mess I am so sad paint goes everywhere on the table on the floor on my hands I feel terrible and wanna give up
Don't give up. Try again!
I do not use any water at all when mixing paints for vinyl - water will not stick to vinyl 😉
yes thank you awesome
im awaiting my first doll kit, and ive bought the tile medium as youve advised....just to ask do you seal the kits after painting? if so what do you use? thank you
I have a Nu-Wave oven in my garage and I use Genesis Thinning Medium mixed with Genesis Matte Varnish to seal and then bake. Good luck. Sharon
