Here's a tip for the staining on your mortar and pestle. The reason the pigment is staining it is because the material it's made out of is very porous. If you get a glass mortar and pestle it won't stain like that. 😊
Tracey~I just watched this tonight & I was thinking you probably have so much of that part A resin is maybe because u used all your extra part B in your last batch of pigment pastes. You are too hard on yourself! You are an amazing artist!
they are all 1 to 1 mixes so it's an odd thing. This was the first batch I've made with this resin so I dunno why it works that way. I often just eyeball the measurements so that's probably why
I have always had an issue with one or the other being leftover. Not just you and I measure them as correctly as I possibly can! Thank you, this is a wonderful idea, not wasting the expensive resin and hardeners. Beautiful colors.
Yes, this is the simpler Sherry Vegas method. Lots of resin artists have done videos on it but the pestle and mortar method produces the smoothest results I find and no complicated ratios, just 2 part so no worries about it accidentally curing over time
A tiny dollar store spatula or the silicone stir sticks let’s resin and some other companies include free with their resin work like a charm to get most all the paste out of your bowl. More paste kept , way easier cleanup- it’s a win win!
@@miniscenesgb sorry if that came off as me “waste policing”, I meant no disrespect, I love your videos. I’m just excited for my new mini spatula is all. It’s like with baking but little…( yes, I am aware of my condition, and, no, there no support group for people like me)😂

I watched Steve McDonald makes his own and he did it on a pane of glass and a putty knife. He always uses part b and that’s what I always seem to have left over. I love the idea of using my micas though. Top idea Tracey ❤
This has been my plan for a long time. I have titanium dioxide too. And a morter and pestle. I didn't think about using part b of the resin though. I had heard you use only part a. Good to know, and great video❤
It’s either part. I’ve used both bc I didn’t know😂 Part A is thicker & seems to absorb pigments better making a ‘paste’.. I think the whole thing is to use as small amounts as possible bc it is adding more A or B to the mix, thus the paste company’s saying use 2% or less total volume. Using less bc it’s the resin side means no special calculations needed. Happy Arting!
There are universal resins that can be used without any issues instead of using the regular resin one uses in pours and such. Many are used by big companies that make pastes and paints to alleviate the resin compatibility. Just a thought to check into those companies as it’s considered a good way to make pastes. I’ve tons of mica here so this is a great shortcut for using up those fly away powders. But I’m going to snag some of the additive and compare the results. ❤
Definitely worth experimenting, I've used at least 8 different brands, some deep pours , some regular, and sometimes part b and sometimes a, all seem to work fine. I'll be interested to see your findings as it sounds like you'll be going well beyond what I did here
@@miniscenesgb there are a few books on how to do so with resin and paint and the additives they use. Though some read like stereo manuals. Lol. I had a list of the additives and now can’t find it. Ugh. My day started that way at 3:30 AM. If I find it again I’ll let you know.
That would be awesome. Although I have a drawer full of pastes I’ve made, mixing my own colors and using every resin variation imaginable. Hi, I watch Pouring your heart out as well - she made a UA-cam clip on 1:1 ratio for resin - I use it with let’s resin, craft resin and it works brilliantly. Basically, you use a little less of b than a. I have followed this for over a year and the finish at the same time also no problems with any pieces at the end. Love your videos ❤❤
I'm new and measure super carefully and I'm here because I have extra of one and didn't want to waste it. I think it has to do with the thickness of the liquids.
I have a theory about the having excess. After reading in the groups, everyone complaining about this topic, I started analyzing how I measured. I noticed that when I stopped pouring, the part B (I always start w/ B first) would be just above the measuring line. So I started paying closer attention to this... and noticed myself doing it with part A as well at times! Ok, so improper measuring to start. Also, do you measure at eye level? Lesson I learned either you go down to the counter level, or bring the measuring device up to your eye level. If you are looking down at it or at an angle it's not "properly" measured. But that's my .02! Thank you for this demo. I'd wondered about what to do w/ my excess and this is such a wonderful idea. I'm also going to start mixing a bit of mica in with resin to make dots of color and glue them to the appropriate pot so I will remember what it looks like in resin, versus the dry powder. I've great enjoyed all your videos even if I don't comment on them. I look forward to more. oh! Daniel Cooper put his into the vac chamber and it helped draw the air out of the clumps of powder, making it easier to mix.
yes a vac chamber helps - I do that sometimes, but to be honest if im not using them straight away they degass anyway. Glad you are enjoying my videos. You may be right about the measuring. yes i measure at eye level too. Also, Lets Resin sent me two part Bs once instead of one of each so I have a load of spare part B lol

I began making my own resin paste, with part B because it's the one that seems to always have something leftover (no matter the brand, no matter the exact measurements!). I absolutely LOVE that silver! Too bad it's so expensive, and the shipping just as bad!

Hi! Beautiful ideas. I’m in the US and not finding the floating silver powder through the links or on Amazon. Would appreciate a direct link to the product. Thanks!
Absolutely brilliant idea thanks a million for sharing this with us definitely will be making my own paste tomorrow would NEVER have thought to use up old resin to make paste 🤗🤗🤗
Have fun doing it - I have to say the pestle and mortar made a huge difference, it was Sherry Vegas that I got this way of doing it from and it sure is simple
This has really got me thinking. I wonder if the silver floating pigment will float as much now that it is mixed and ground into a paste? I am looking forward to a video on the results of the experiment. Also, I have to wonder if grinding chameleon powders will affect the color shift? Maybe an idea for a future video? 🤔
I've tried chameleon in this video and no - it really doesn't affect it, works just the same which was a relief :). The silver you will see on my giant geode video - after making into a paste it will mostly integrate into the resin, but a bit still floats. This is why I mention int he video that any you will want to keep for burnishing into moulds you need to keep back - same goes for floating. Thanks for watching and good questions there :)
This has been a really informative and interesting video. Thank you for sharing this with us. ❤I also usually have an uneven amount when I get to the bottom of the bottles of resin. I believe my larger measuring/mixing cup doesn't have correct markings. I have started using one measuring cup and cleaning it out between part A and part B. Then, I put the containers side by side and eyeball the level in each shipping container. I have become OCD in this one thing only😂😂😂.
I have some resin that one part has turned yellow so the part that’s not yellowing can be used. If I understand you can use either part a or b. Correct? Go way to use up the none yellowing resin. Thanks for the video
I didn't know you could do this. I'll be using this for sure. No you aren't the only one who ends up with one part of the resin left over. I always have some left over. Go figure..
Cool, it's a neat trick. I did promise to do a white comparison with a pro make - I forgot all about it till someone reminded me recently. I'll do that soon
My question is whether or not it matters what type of resin you used for the paste if it’s not the same type being used when you pour? Like if you make paste with 1:1 type, will it matter if you use it in a 2:1 type when you pour, or fast cure versus deep pour, etc.?
Good question - as there is such a tiny amount when you finally use it, so far I have found no difference at all asl long as it's some sort of epoxy. remember you usually use only the size of a pea at most when you put it into your main mix, so that's probably why it doesn't seem to matter
Yes I have. There's a whole playlist of jewellery stuff that I'm gradually adding to, take a look on my channel home page and you'll see all the playlists I've set up for you :)
Thank you so much for doing this video. Ive just started using pastes and they work out a bit pricy to start with. When using these ones in projects do you just need a small amount like you do with the shop brought ones?
Sjp bought ones are usually more pigmented so with your home made ones you will need a little more. All depends how much powder you've managed to cram in. Do remember that the shop bought ones last a heck of a long time so can be very good value, one you are in a position to invest
Thanks, it was very informative 😊, love the jars but that was the bead’er in me 😹😹 I have this makeup kit I bought years ago it has a 100 colours in it I might use them plus I have some chalk/oil like paint sticks they should work well in that as well. So it looks like I will be ordering a lot of them jars and a small bottle set of resin as it should not matter which one I use A or B as long as they don’t get mixed together that is😹😹 I have an old mortar and pestle set that the hospital gave me to crush Dads tablets in, my local chemist had a right proper pill crusher 😹😹😹 so I can use that, can’t use my other one it’s for making my own oil pigment paints. It’s very much like making the oil paints you have to keep working it so the pigments are completely absorbed by the linseed oil, the longer you work it the better the quality of the paint, so I would imagine the same would apply to the resin. Umm been a long time since I have mixed any of my oils lol but it has just given me an idea, I have tubes of Jo Sonja paints that for some unknown reason a rat decided to put holes in all of them I did not throw them out as I thought I could use them like paint sticks but that did not work out so well, just maybe I can use the mortar & Pestle and bring them back into powder they can not be used for painting but maybe this might give them a new life. I bought a heap of alcohol pens but don’t like them for colouring so I will put them into more alcohol in dropper bottles and make my own ink with them. Yep you have given me heaps to look at and fix😹😹😹 thank you for sharing 🤗🤗
Fantastic video! That silver 😍 Love it!!! I can't wait to see how that turns out in a resin piece - this is probably a really silly question, and I'll probably want the ground to swallow me up if it is, but do you think some of the silver will still float to the surface 🤔 my curious mind can't help but ask 🙈😅 xx
That's actually a good question, and yes, a bit does. Take a look at my video #128 where I make the big geode tray - you'll see it do some of what paste should do, and still a little floats
I use it a lot, just isn’t on this film and I haven’t yet made a video on it as i tend to use pigment paste white from just4 yuk on,ins nowadays, and you end up using so much powder it’s not really cost effective. Works well though
I have some extra part B resin. This will be a perfect use for it.😊 I can't wait to see what you make with the silver. I haven't been able to find it in the US. Love watching your videos 🥰!
You can get the silver from Just4YouOnlineUK. They ship to anywhere pretty much worldwide. Son't forget there's the link and the discount code for the store in my video description
Hi Tracey love this 😍 do they act differently in a paste as they do when they are in powder form? Once mixed with resin and cured? Or are they just the same? Thanks for sharing ❤❤❤ xxx
Exactly the same Michelle. I think you mentioned a while ago how mixing with a little resin first prevents the blobs, this is just a step on from that and it works a treat
I always have part B left. I think they fill the bottles by weight, then tell you to measure by volume. Since A is heavier than B, you end up with B leftover. At least that's my theory. So I started pouring just a slight bit more B in my cups. And I mean slight. I'll measure A to the line and B maybe a mm above it.
Could be though mostly i think it's because I have been known to spill it lol. I do measure by volume only so you might have a point there, interesting tip thank you
Will you have to factor in the part A or B when adding the past to 2 part resin? I was thinking no because you’ll only be using a small amount of paste, but figured I’d ask anyway 😂
I will be stocking a very limited amount from time to time. Only 2 of them produce those leaves so it will always be limited. I will pt them in my store soon :)
Here's a tip for the staining on your mortar and pestle. The reason the pigment is staining it is because the material it's made out of is very porous. If you get a glass mortar and pestle it won't stain like that. 😊

What was the blue, silver and red color ? Thank u
I lost the bit of film of that but it just cured a disappointing flat dull blue sadly
Lol, yes I often heck against the bottles but it still goes adrift somewhere. Not helped ny Lets Resin sending be 2 part Bs 'once
Is there an expiration date on these pastes?
Whatever the expiration date is on the resin you mixed it with would apply to the pastes :)
I have some resin that one part has turned yellow so the part that’s not yellowing can be used. If I understand you can use either part a or b. Correct? Go way to use up the none yellowing resin. Thanks for the video
Yes you can! I find either part works fine
When u make that paste so how long u can leave on shelf up to???
For as long as the shelf life on the resin you use is, so that will vary. Be guided by the shelf life the resin says on the bottle :)
Do you have a video on making jewellery 😊
Well as I missed the start of the video I’m off to watch from the start 😹😹😹
Hope you enjoy it Dawsie - shout up here if you have any questions :)
When making your own pigment pastes with the micas..will it give you cells and lacing in your resin like regular bought pigment paste?
should do yes. I've not tried it but I don't wee why not
Fantastic video!
I’ve yet to see you use the titanium powder yet..so we must not have to use it?
I use it a lot, just isn’t on this film and I haven’t yet made a video on it as i tend to use pigment paste white from just4 yuk on,ins nowadays, and you end up using so much powder it’s not really cost effective. Works well though
Can you do this with uv resin x
sort of - you'd have to keep it in a black bottle in a dark place :)
@@miniscenesgb ah right I see thanks for clearing that up for me, yeah I try to do that almost always, looked fun mixing them ❤️❤️❤️ xxx
To clean it use alcohol & acetone.
Yep that works :) thanks
He definitely got to make sure you write part a or part b on it so you'll know which one it is
No - you use it in such tiny quantities it doesn't matter :)
I do measure by volume only so you might have a point there, interesting tip thank you
I always end up with more B left and I use 1:1 by volume 🤷🏼♀️
Not just me then lol. Also I had that problem when Let's resin sent me 2 bottles of B instead of one of each
Will you have to factor in the part A or B when adding the past to 2 part resin? I was thinking no because you’ll only be using a small amount of paste, but figured I’d ask anyway 😂
You're right. Such a tiny amount it doesn't really matter
The name of Wendy's (Toonpish Crafts) video about the red micas is called "The perfect red Mica powder and where to find it"
That's the one, thanks
Is there a way to order the tiny bonsai leaves from you.I would really be interested.love your videos
I will be stocking a very limited amount from time to time. Only 2 of them produce those leaves so it will always be limited. I will pt them in my store soon :)
Thank you,I really will be stalking your store for them
I would get solvent resistant gloves. Those you most likely can reuse😊😊😊
No, I got the ones recommended by my expert, the global chemicals compliance guy for one of the wields biggest chemicals firms, nitrile since use.
❤
Glad you found this useful x
