  • Plant Lovers spring is finally springing here in Australia so it's time to brave the outside growing areas and see what survived winter...and what didn't..... and get to with the tasks of the season that will hopefully give everything the best chance to grow and flourish throughout the coming growing months and hopefully flower!

I actually love when plant channels share their failures because I feel like I learn way more from other people's failures than their successes.

Ahhh....spring is still just a dream in these parts as we struggle to endure the cold Arctic blast! But, as you know, hope SPRINGS ETERNAL. Soon the daffodils will be adorning the streets and my Paperwhites narcissus will flower and spread their fragrance far and wide here in Washington in the Pacific Nothwest of the USA. I will watch your spring pursuits in awe until I can do some too!
Thank you for your inspiration and forward thinking!!🤠💪😎💥💚

I really like that you talked about your failures, but I wish you would have shown the roots too. There are so many UA-camrs that say that you can revive orchids with no leaves... there's even a few that say they can revive orchids with no roots. But I totally understand giving up on plants that you've poured out your heart for years and you just can't give anymore. But please next year, show us the roots too. 💖🌞🌵😷

@@helloplantlovers , yes, but showing the roots helps me learn more about the reason why it died and maybe a glimmer of life that maybe revived. (Some plants will drop all their leaves when too cold and come back because their roots were spared.) Sending lots of love 💖 from sunny 🌞 Arizona 🌵. Take care of yourself and each other 😷.

Matthew, Matthew, you are so funny! I loved the “Academy Award” show😂. I, too, lost quite a few orchids this year. Not for the same reasons as yours since we absolutely do not have the same growing conditions (I live in Southwest Florida😱) but it was as disappointing. Enjoy your spring chores while we are getting shorter days here😩😍

Was lovely to meet you Matt! I have found it so useful when you explain the climate of the origins of an orchid, to better understand the growing requirements. Your relaxed approach to fertilising, and using trial and error and not being afraid of some failures, gives me as a beginner, confidence to have to go. Your insights on various microclimate in our own gardens was also a good perspective to have, but the best advice from you was to just to keep an eye on your collection, and let th plants show you what works for them, and what does not. So grateful for all your advice

I've heard many orchid growers that crumple eggshells and top dress their outdoor orchids with them. The jagged edges of the eggshells deter the snails and sluggs and the eggshells breakdown and provide the orchids with calcium. (How fine do you crumple the eggshells? Depends on the size of your snails. You don't want them too fine or the snails won't get cut to shreds by the eggshells!) 💖🌞🌵😷

@@helloplantlovers , yes, but my point was you can make your own. I use a stick blender that became dull and was replaced with a new one. Works great and it's free!
Just wondering if you use shell grit do you still get snails and slugs as you mentioned in this video? If yes, you might try a more course grind. 💖🌞🌵😷

Refreshing to see an orchid grower who will show their losses. I've just declared 4 seedlings dead that have spent the last 6 months in my OICU (orchid intensive care unit)
I was sick of worrying about them!
You mentioned looking up your records to check on a plant, could you do a video, or a segment on how you keep your records.
I do mine on a spreadsheet and a have laboriously entered each plant in my phone along with their numbers so I can do short notes when outside then update the spreadsheet my laptop. I've looked for an app to use on my phone but they are all for iphones and I use android.

Hi Matthew, I'm from Melbourne as well. Recently caught the orchid bug and now I'm addicted and my collection is growing bigger everyday. I love watching your videos and I look forward to your new video every Fridays. I think you are absolutely hilarious and entertaining to watch. I just can't help but laughed at your academy award show for those orchids that didn't make it. I hope I don't loose many over the coming winter. I feel your pain especially for those orchids that you really loved or spent a lot of money on. I am in the same shoes as you, no green house, just me and my orchids either inside my house or outside. Hope to bump into you one day in Collectors Corner Garden world or orchid show. Keep up the good work mate.

and put the stem flat on top of the media and make sure it doesn't move around and it might start to grow another shoot.

$52 for the seasol seweed extrct is a rip off. It's less than £20 a gallon here. I know you keep saying that the slow release fertilizers are released by heat but that isn't quite true, they are specifically released by water or moisture. It's true that they will release more in warmer weather because the water will be warmer. It's like placing a broth cube into some water. In cold water it won't really dissolve well and take a long time. In boiling water it will disintegrate and dissolve very fast. So warm water releases the fertilizer faster but if the media is dry, then heat alone will not release any slow release fertilizer. Only when you water, to slowly fertilize all water that runs through the pot.

love the video! With those seedlings going mushy in pure sphagnum, I'm an amateur myself but I tend to add a bit of charcoal to the moss (for aeration) and springtails to eat fungi (I once added mycorrhizal fungi to one of those seedlings and it went out of control 😅).

I've been doing an autumn toss out myself. Some of the plants don't really bother me to lose, but losing the Pridgeonia insignis, that one hurts. I'm probably never going to be able to replace that plant and I just don't know what went wrong. It had been doing great for almost two years, putting up new growths, flowering. In about two weeks, the whole of the plant turned brown. I didn't change anything, other than putting it in fresh sphagnum in the spring.

Thanks for sharing your failures, it's good to know that even you have them sometimes. I was wondering if you've ever felt indifferent toward your orchids? Oh yes indeed! That's why I only grow things that are low maintenance, I just don't have the time or inclination to fuss! So for me it's finding the type of plant that once you find the right spot is happy to just go on giving!

    • @helloplantlovers
      @helloplantlovers  9 місяців тому

Thanks for watching! There is no one answer for watering I'm afraid! It will depend on your climate and then where you're growing, the potting medium, the pot, the type of orchid..... I will say though that the Coelogyne's require watering all year, including winter. Here's my play list of Coelogyne care videos: ua-cam.com/play/PLXVNKHj1A0dT6Yyalllya52mzqyBpnPrY.html
      Sarcochilus here: ua-cam.com/play/PLXVNKHj1A0dQSBiyFPVOXAQwwBLACxXQy.html
And with Dendrobiums it will depend on which type it is. If you're ever unsure; less is more! Good luck!
