  • In the latter part of 2023, I was invited to assemble a group to perform my 10tet compositions and arrangements at Soka University in Aliso Viejo, CA on April 13, 2024. The gentleman responsible for this was Jim Merod, professor of American Literature, founder of Blueport Jazz and Benny Golson's biographer (to list but a few of his credits). I travelled to CA the night before and on the day of the concert, we assembled and rehearsed for the first time for 3 hours, performing later that evening. Among the members of the group were dear friends (Jeff Jarvis-trumpet, Keith Bishop-baritone, Glenn Cashman-tenor, Zach Niess-trombone) as well as some whom I met for the first time that day (Chad Willis-lead trumpet, Jeremy Siskind-piano, Andy Waddell-guitar, Michael Parchaiski-bass, Ryan Dong-drums). Between the rehearsal and performance Jim interviewed me. This documentary is the result of the efforts of that day. I am overwhelmed by the musicality of the group (Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!), as well as the graciousness and hospitality of all the people involved in this production, including Renee Bodie (general manager of the Soka PAC), Steve Baker (production manager), Jarmil Maupin (technical services manager), as well as the documentarians, whose names you will find listed at the end of this documentary. But most of all, I am forever indebted to Jim Merod, who felt a connection to my music and set the wheels in motion for this event. Much love to you, Jim!
