After sitting in the garage for 5 years, I attempted to use my 10 year old roomba 550. After replacing the battery, I was getting a 9 beep error. This series of videos was extremely helpful. I purchased new bumper and cliff sensors online and my 10 year old roomba 550 cleaned for 68 minutes today for the first time in over 5 years. Thanks so much!

Your fantastic videos have helped me repair my iRobot Roomba 535. It quit working 3 years ago and I just started using my old upright vacuum and left that one in the closet sitting there. I finally called the iRobot customer service and they told me that I had an Error 9 and that they could not fix it. They offered me a new one at a discounted price of $265. I said no thank you. Before I made the move to throw it out I did a UA-cam search and found your channel. :) I ordered the part on eBay, and here we after 2 hours (I had to watch the video a few times as I was following along), it's done!!! My little robot is off cleaning my house once again. I don't usually leave comments, but I felt that I at least owed you that much.
THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!
my 595 pet series needs a new battery, what brand model would you recommend?
Excellent and instructive video. My 650 had been working flawlessly every day for 9 years, then it went berserk and kept saying move to a new location. Did the tests and they showed it was a fault with an optical cliff sensor. Following this video I removed the sensors and they were full of dust. So I just pulled off the clear plastic housings, blew out the dust and vacuumed them, then reinstalled. All working perfectly again 😀
Your video helped me out a lot, I had used another video a few years back and it wasn't nearly as well-thought-out as yours I had no issues removing the old cliff sensors. But unfortunately the dog distracted me and then the phone rang, and when I started to finish up my job I had put the motherboard back in and all the connections and was just starting on the bumper when I realized I put the old cliff sensors back In! So an hour and 1/2 later I had the Right Cliff sensors. I also recommend popping off the plastic Covers' off of the sensors and cleaning them with some compressed air. I salvaged mine off of an old parts when I had and a few of them were cracked and dirty. It's pretty easy to do there's a little tab that you can get with your fingernails on each side and then slide them up. Anyway thanks again for the great video and I love your accent! 🙂
These are the older series. It was doing the dance and headed for the dump. I found this video and because I am in Canada I had to order parts from Amazon. There is a link on the third in this series that takes you to Ebay where you can send your own sensors for repair for $19.99 if you live in the US. Followed these videos for dismantling, instal and reassembly. Really well done! Clear, detailed and very easy to follow. My 500 series works like new. Can’t thank you enough.
Thanks for the video! my Roomba is now good for another 15 years!
Just wanted to thank you for posting this video. It took some patience but I was able to repair my roomba with no problems!
no problem, glad I can help, if you have any questions in future about the Roombas let me know and I can help you out
Great videos! Just replaced IR sensors on my old 500 series Roomba, which was one step away from the junk yard. Easy fix. Thanks!
Great to hear!
Thanks to this video, I was able to safely replace the parts. Thank you very much.
Excellent!
Hello, Many thanks for your comprehensive roomba videos. My 550 went amok with the circling syndrome. I put in a new sensor harness, based on your instructions. It worked! Thanks again and keep up the good work.

I'm lost, at what point did he address the problem with the bumper sensor?
Thank you so much for this valuable instruction - this brought our little 5 year old helper back to life! That's a really good video which is easy to understand, even if you don't have any clue of technical details...THANKS!
Thanks for your feedback, I am glad my video helped you, please subscribe to my channel and like my video to support my channel, thanks
Glad I was able to use my Coast Guard Electronics training to repair a vacuum cleaner. The hardest part of the repair was to solder the small LEDs to t he circuit board! Thanks for your detailed instructions! Fred.
Thank you, thank you! I ordered new bumper sensors/cliff sensors from your eBay store and just completely fixed my Roomba using your videos! Very easy to follow, thanks again.
Thank you so much! The instructions were very clear and I was able to follow along very easily. My Roomba 530 is fixed now, amazing! Saved many hundreds not having to buy a new one versus $30 CAD in parts.
I wanted to thank you for the video! The tear down and repair of the bumper sensor help me fix my Roomba for less than $10. Thanks again!
No problem, I am glad I can help and happy that the Roomba is back to life.
Saved my life!! Thank you! I was getting Error 9 since I bought it but in my country there's no customer care yet. Just made it work following your videos!! Perfect!
You really helped fix and fix it. Thank you very much.
You are welcome, thanks for watching the video
Thanks. My roomba 830 had a loose bumper so I followed your video to disassemble it and refix the bumper, cleaning it in the process . It works well now.

Thank you for your reply. Following your video I took it apart, and checked the bumpers which seemed askew. It solved the problem!!! I really appreciate it.
that's great that the video help you out, I am excited for you that the Roomba can go continue doing its work for you
Thank you for your helpful, detailed video! I bought the bumper and cliff sensor replacement part on eBay and was able to replace it easily without any prior experience!
I have one of these I am hoping to fix. This video will help a lot.
Thanks, I was able to replace my Roomba Sensor in able an hour with your videos.
Great to hear, if you have any more questions regarding the iRobot product please let me know and I can help you out
Thank you, this helped me a lot when disassembling my 620 to fix the "not charging when docked" error.
Very good instructions....thanks
Gerat video! It helped me to repair my Roomba 563 (docking problem)
Perfect. Thanks for sharing
No problem 👍
Merci beaucoup!! Super vidéo pour réparer son iRobot roomba 560!
Thanks for the video. I replaced my bumper/cliff sensor harness and I thought everything went well. When I put the battery in, it kept going through the start-up cycle and there was a high pitched whine(not moving). I put it on the charger and it stopped going through the start-up sequence. but the loud whine noise kept going. I hit the clean button and it started to work fine. Bumper and cliff sensors working fine. But the whine came back when it dock. Whine is too loud to live with!
thanks for the tutorial very helpful, next time please cut the music in the background so it's easier to hear what your saying, thanks again
Worked great.
thanks! im gonna try that next weekend greetz
What do you do to actually repair the sensors? Could you describe what actually fails with them? Is it a matter of just fixing solder joints, polishing the plastic, or what exactly fails?
The IR diodes fail in them and need replacement, I sell them at my eBay store, my link is in the description
Roomba 600. Error 5, after replacing right motor and front bumper i m having the same problem…hints are welcome! Tks in advance
hi there, I ordered the parts and followed the instructions which were great, however I am still having the same issue: circle dance after I replaced the two IR sensors. Is there something else I can try before tossing this thing?
thank you for the video on how to disassemble it, but can you make a video on how to change the sensors when you take everything apart?
Hi and welcome to my UA-cam channel, yes I do have the videos on that as well, here is the link to it
How to Repair iRobot Roomba "Circle Dance" 9 Beep Error Part 1
I have a Roomba 630 the right wheel had more resistance so it would go in circles. I replaced the right wheel module. As soon as you screw down the module the resistance is there. I checked the bumper and cliff sensors by doing the diagnostics and they seem ok. How can I fix this?
My 530 bumper test spot stay lit, dock is lit, cliff sensor some spot/dock not lit and both test is red clean..mean i need change both sensor?
Great vid! I just tried the diagnostic and I'm pretty sure my roomba failed - the clean light stayed red, but during the test the Dock button flashed green when I pressed the left side of the bumper - I'm guessing you have to replace the whole thing though...
GREAT VIDEO, my roomba e6 has the same problem, I took it to the service and they said that the problem is on the system board, is there any way to identify whether the problem is located, to isolate the fault, because I felt tempted to replace the sensors and see what happens but I don't want to do trial and error if there is a better way to approach the problem, any ideas?
Yes, you can do a BiT (built in test) to determine the fault, also you can also take the Roomba apart and after taking apart the bumper sensors use an android phone camera or a digital camera that sees IR light and see if your IR LEDs are on when the test is performed, if they are dim or just not glowing the you would need to change the bumper sensors, but if the ON and bright then the issue could be with in the board, but there are other factors to consider that there could be faulty wires or bad soldering joints
WHAT IS THE PART NUMBER FOR IRLED TRANSMITTER? MY ROOMBA MODEL NUMBER IS 630. THANK YOU
Is taking every single thing apart necessary? By watching your video it seems the bumper sensors could have been replaced much easier?
hi, it is mostly different from the top area, since the faceplate is different, I am going to do a video on that soon, but in mean time, you would need to pop up the small plastics that go around and are parallel to the handle and there will be screws there
I have roomba 770. Is taking that apart similar, or very different? My initial concern is removing the face plate. It has 2 plastic clips that look like they would break if I just try to pry it off as you show with the 500 and 600 series. Any suggestions?
...Do you recommend a complete nubie to electronic repair attempt this? You make it seem easy but I'm thinking once I get in there and have this disassembled it may be harder than it looks. If one side of my sensor works then could it just be debris? Thanks for any help in advance!
Super awesome video! Mahalo Bradda, yes I also viewed your videos on the other models. I watched the first one dissembled the bot ordered the parts thinking duck soup putting it back ... Part 2 Bang... Bot is banging everything again. Any videos on the use of the light house? It blinks but the bot just passes by it. Even when I have it as virtual wall.
hi ty for your reaction.. i found a video on you tube here to tape of the lenses with aluminium foil it works but not great its like the robot is a bit disorientated.
i dont know what you mean by: and removing the little black plastic which separates the IR light.?
can i just cut the lens wires? will that do the trick?
my robot is an demo robot from a store that i got cheap without warranty so it doesnt matter to me what i do with it.
i really want it to work on my black carpet. greetz
i have a problem with my black carpet the robot doesnt work there can i do something about that?
i tried to tape them of still doesnt work can i disconnect the censors? you have an idea?
My 560 failed both the bumper test and the Clift sensor test. How do I know if it's the motherboard or the sensors?
Have you had to retread tire
no, I have had plenty of wheels to replace if needed, but the older models of Roombas and the older Scoobas did need to be done and I have done them.
Where can I buy those little IR Bumper Sensor Boards? Also those little clear sensors that you soldered on? Thx!
if you cut the wires it will think there is a cliff and will continue to go back or circle dance mode, what I meant by removing black pieces of plastic that separates light is so the photodiode will always see the IR LED and will continue to do its job by cleaning your carpet, steps to do this are simple, after removing the Cliff sensors, remove the clear plastic and upon doing so remove any black plastic that you see separating the light, which is inside the clear plastic and the holder of led
changed sensors but no luck any other options to stop the circle dance
I purchased the two new diode’s and methodicly installed them cleaning the Roomba every step along the way. After a couple hours I pushed the start button only to find the unit is doing exactly the same thing. Goes round and round then beeps 9 times. Any other suggestions?
where is the whine coming from, the speaker or one of the motors? can you go to the BiT mode and go through the whole thing and see where the whine is coming from
Hi, there is a way but it could void your warranty and if you are using it on second floor and there are stairs it could fall, unless you set up a virtual wall, one way of doing it, will be removing the cliff sensors and out and removing the little black plastic which separates the IR light, if you need more info I can make a video, thanks.
hi my aunt loulou has a Roomba but I don't know what model it is but it would be helpful.
Is there a site I can go to to send questions about how to correct certain Roomba issues?
I need bumper sensor for roomba 550 .do you know where to get one?
My roomba 620 just died, no lights or error beeps, nothing. I have changed the battery and nothing still. Do you know if it can be PCB or any other thing?
snapped wire perhaps?
its best to just replace both at same time, that way you take it apart once
my Roomba 650 is going in circles but gives me error 10 not error 9. Is this the same fix?
I did the diagnostics etc and I am getting a solid green light on the Dock light for the right bumper that won't turn off. It is not disengaging the sensor at all. Will the replacement of the sensor fix this problem? I appreciate your help
yes if the test checks out good for the left bumper sensor, then your are doing the test correctly and if you are getting the 9 beep error (Circle Dance) then replacement of the sensors will fix this issue
My 650: when I run the Roomba, it goes in a circle and does not travel to clean. Diagnostics clears all(blue light) but I feel it is stuck in spot mode
Any advice?
I changed the black and white rubber wheel and that is all I changed. It did get stuck in one spot and wore out a side of the wheel
Dear all, you can buy the IR led and IR photo transistor parts much cheaper than in the ebay link. Check out your local electronics store for these parts and you will find that the price is 50cent per one part AT MOST.
Thanks for the video. My unit has been stored for a couple of years and when I started it up, all it did was go in kind of a small circle and back and forth for about a minute or two then the 9 beeps. I went through the process of taking my Roomba 550 apart and reassembling and it still comes up with the 9 beeps. When I go through the manual testing of the bumpers the center light stays RED. Is there any kind of a cleaning method that may fix the problem or will I need a bumper assembly? Could there be other issues?
when you perform the built in test do the spot and dock buttons light up when you press the according bumper side, pressing the left side should light up the spot button light and pressing the right side of bumper should light up the dock button, if one of them stays on lit the whole time, then the issue is with the bumper sensors, but in your case the issue could be not over, since you had it stored there could be an issue with moisture damage or corrosion, depending on the climate where you live at and the place where the Roomba was stored, if you would like more help let me know and I can help you get your Roomba back on cleaning your home
Thanks for the reply. the first thing is that it had been stored in a hall closet without any kind of moisture present. when I run the manual test the Date, Hour, Minute, Schedule and Clock buttons test fine with the Spot and Dock blinking when I press the buttons. it is when I go to the next test for the bumper that I get no change when I press on either the right or left bumpers. it starts off with both the Spot and Dock showing Green and the center Clean button stays red. Will repairing the sensors fix the issue?
Sal Petriello when the lights are lit in the second step of the test, then that means that the sensors have failed, and in need of repair, it means that both the left and the right are not actuated, 99.5 percent is when this is the issue, the other .5 percent could be caused by bad motherboard, wire harness not connected correctly, or wire harness is damage, so the answer is yes this repair will fix your issue
My bumper test looks like a stuck/failing left bumper, spot lights green without touching. Also cliff sensors light spot and dock for inner and outer but clean ring stays red. Where can I get replacement LED for bumper?
Amazon or ebay i think
what ever you do please do not cut the wires for the cliff sensors as that would do even worse, let me explain how they work: in the cliff sensors there are to diodes, one is the IR LED which put out a light in IR and the other is the Photo diode which detects the IR light and takes the signal to the computing processor. The IR LED's light bounces of the floor and the Photo diode sees the light and continues to drive, but when there is no light detected (ex. cliff, black carpet) it goes back.
ERROR 9: My Roomba seems to have this problem. I live in Peru, where there is no available customer service. I watched your video and the repair doesn't seem too complicated. However, I need the exact name of the piece that needs exchanging and information of where/how to buy it. Could you provide these too, please?
ya just look at the link in this video to my eBay store where you can purchase the replacement parts
How can I get in touch with this man?
if there are people doing research on how to repair this then I figure they will know some knowledge about disassembling and some electronic repair, usually people who have no knowledge of electronics will most likely wont even watch this video, they will just by new Roomba, if one side works and one doesn't just replace both, it is less likely it is debris cause that is usually visible by removing the bumper
so our cliff sensors were working but after taking the brush and wheels off to clean, the roomba kept saying move to new spot. I tested the cliff sensors and they no longer work now, any idea?
B
going through the Diagnostics, I am getting a DIRT Detect blue light. What does that mean?
Nothing, it is for decoration, i have it, but i havent got the 2 red lights next to the schedule and clock button...
I was able to put my Roomba back together with your help. Now, I'm getting the (1 beep) "move Roomba to a new location error message". The wheels turn freeiy, I cleaned off the cliff sensors which weren't dirty, removed and re-installed the battery. Also, it comes out of the dock (about 2 feet) turns slightly and stops before the beep and error message. The brush doesn't rotate either during this short period. Any suggestions?
you could have plugged in the harness backwards, please take apart and reassemble, and watch for the harness to be plugged in correctly and all the way, and let me know how that works out for you
TheiRobotChannel It took me awhile to get back to this. I checked all of the harnesses to insure they were plugged in correctly. Same result...didn't work. I also purchased and installed a new set of wheels and a brush motor. That didn't help either.
I am having this exact issue, six months after warranty expires. It seems to be one of those "common enough for many people to post online, but not common enough for there to be a solution" problems.
excellent but please leave the music out
There's actually dirt in the front bumper
I took mine apart, cleaned it and put it together and still get the 9 beep error. The tests show that the left side doesn't light up once you're closer to the end of the bumper. Do bumper sensors require cleaning as well? That's the only thing I left out from thorough cleaning.
the 500 series and newer Roombas any cleaning wont help that much, most likely the sensors went out, you can send them in for the repair, just visit my eBay store, the link is in the description
TheiRobotChannel Peculiar thing is happening with the left bumper sensor. I completely disassembled it to get to the bare diodes and it appears to be responding better. While running a test, it flashes the 'spot' lights when I put my finger between them. However, when I put the plastic diode cover back, the 'spot' light is steady. Do you still think it's the diodes?
Vadim A the diodes give infrared light and when they are ending their life, the light dims, so the diodes are useless then, and need to be replaced with the new ones, which I sell on my eBay store, the link for it is in the description
oh, I had it fixed a while ago and it works like new. I'm not sure if I ordered from you, but thanks much for your help.
Hello I have around roomba 500 it passes all the tests but when I start it, it just goes around in one direction on one wheel. I have replaced both wheel units. I think that it may be the mother board. Do you have any advice.
so does it starts moving in circle as soon as you turn on the power on the Roomba, or only after its on and then you press clean button? replacing the motherboard is a good idea, you wont loose any money if it was not the issue, buy a used one on ebay and if it was not the issue resell it, just make sure it is the correct model of your Roomba, also did you perform the whole test of the Roomba as in from start to end, I will add a link in my description in a couple of minutes of a zip file of the service manual, so you can see on how to perform the test in different ways, and will also make a video on this as well, in the test you can check if your wheels are the issue too.
TheiRobotChannel Thanks for your reply it only starts turning once you start it to clean. Not when first turned on. It always goes around on the right wheel as it does not move.Left one powering. I have changed the right wheel but has made no difference. If you push the bumper it backs off a bit then carries on doing the same again. The machine caught my stereo and pulled it off the wall, the corner of the stereo hit the roomba on the top between the handle and the Minute switch making a dent. The right wheel does turn when it goes backwards. Could you please put the link in for the test as mentioned in your first reply. Thank you for your Help.
Garry Neighbour
well I had the link there and looks like iRobot removed it from my description, so I will most likely do a video on that, keep an eye on my videos and the new ones that will come up will have that video, thanks
Hi thanks went through yhe test on utube ladt night . When you got to the stall test on the left passes and it should test the right wheel next but it dies not turn. The next test which makes both wheels turn works fine. Any ideas
I liked the test button. I have dirt detected, now what?
There are no steps in my house and one of my sensors seems to be bad. Forward with 3 wobbles 180 then repeat over and over. Is there a way to bypass the sensors? Cutting sensor wires or sensor joining wires? Type 4120
My Roomba Discovery 4210 does this wobble too. It also does "uh oh" with 9 beeps, but when I put it in self diagnostic mode, everything tests good. This was a brand new Roomba that was unopened in the box. I replaced the battery because it wouldn't hold a charge. I'm confused how a basically new Discovery 4210 isn't working correctly. I've also taken it apart and cleaned everything, just to be sure, yet it still doesn't work correctly.
Sorry Dan I never figured it out. Bought a new one at Costco.
I bought a new one at Costco too. Was just hoping I could salvage the old one.
Where can I buy the bumper and cliff sensors? I robot will not sell to me. Thanks!
there is a link in the description www.ebay.com/sch/bestdeals1011us/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_from=&_ipg=&_trksid=p3686
I tried the bumper test and the spot lights and the dock lights but also dirt detect button lights and the test does not turn green what does this mean and how do I fix
+Philip Price make sure you are in the correct test as there are several test modes, if the spot light and dock light, light up each time you press and then release the bumper sides, and the lights turn off, then that means the bumper sensors are okay and issue is someplace else, so make a video and let us see what the issue is if you can, if one of the light always stayed on that means the issue is in the bumper sensors, Oh and the dirt sensors is just blinking to tell you which step of test you are at (2 blinks=step 2 of test)
this test procedure does not work on the 530 ,also what about dismantling a 530? do you have a video for that? i already got my leds for bumper fix int he mail
Hello. I have the iRobot 390 and now it is only walk for back and not so long. Can you help me, please? I live in Rio and they say that here we don´t have place to replair and say so sorry. It is not enought for me. I want my iRobot ok again :( Thanks for your chanel
hi, well there could be a number of issues, depending what is causing it, if you make a video and post it, we would able to see the real issue, but top of my head I can say it could be the main board, or the primary wheels that have lost the IR signal, but like I said I cant be sure since I didn't see it
yes please look in the description part of the video and there will be a link that is where you will find the sensors for sale
i want to fix a error 5 charge on my roomba 561 that y bough from you 2 months ago, i can't use my roomba i change the new battery it worked one time and after that it did not charge again. help please
I just send you a message on the repairs
hay man i repaired my robot correctly with new sensors and im still getting 9 beep please help
did you do the BiT to see which bumper sensors are bad, or if you think that you did everything correctly it could be an issue with your PCBoard which I also fix, if you live with in the states you can send me your Roomba and I will try to fix for a fair price, let me know and I will send you the address on where to ship to
music is really distracting
