Thank you for sharing this technic. I love the graphic you printed too. Question: if one would like NOT to keep the wood background for the graphic, is it possible to paint white (water base paint) and only then put the drrawing on top ? I guess yes, as long as the surface is able to suck the colors in, am I right ?
Panda Rouge your welcome. I havnt tried it with paint on the wood first. It may work, if you did a real watered down coat of white! Or you could just print colour on the whole page of paper, and ink out the whole board
Great video. I'm planning my summer project to be pressing a board for myself. I found your channel through your skateboard press video, and that video seem to be your most popular. Maybe you could make a video where you make a board, start to finish? I think it could give your channel many new viewers.
MrWatsuG cool man, that's awesome. Yeah that sounds like a good idea, definitely want start cranking out some more vids that get people engaged more.. Cheers for the heads up 👍🏼 good luck with the board
I've struggled to find out info about designing decks,, I've started a brand here in Australia called SK8KRYMES 2101 CLOTHING,.. that part is easy the clothing range but now peeps want decks.. Thank you you're a blessing,
this is the dopest way to set up a blank. I have wanted to start my own brand forever but being a broke college student is not best. Made my day and I hope your son got to shred the fuck out of that dope as board.
@Benjamin john williams great vid, im going to try this method but i have 3 questions i hope you can reply. 1. How are you printing white, i thought printers didnt print white? 2. My images i want are black and white, will your method work if i spray the board white first or does it need to soak straight into the wood? 3. Did you have to sand the board down first? Thanks
Hey man, Your right, printers don’t print white, the white will be how ever light the timber is. You will definitely have to sand any paint off the board so the graphic can soak directly into the wood. An idea: if you want your white to really pop, you might be able to use some sort of white wash wood stain (rather than paint) that might keep the wood porous enough to transfer the image. You would have to experiment on a scrap. Hope this helps 🤙🏼
I just wish someone would invent a table top heat press for skateboards instead of the big double roller one they use at the manufacturer to press digital heat transfers on to skateboards that can cost 8 to 10 grand
You can get UV inkjet printers that can print to these uneven surfaces. Not the cheapest but it totally avoids using transfer / carrier sheets. Jigs can be gotten to print directly to multiple decks at once with either the same or different graphics per item. Some UV inkjet printers can also print on objects upwards of 8-11 inches tall / thick.
Shiloe Goodliffe I don’t so much on the carver and street decks. But I’ve made a couple solid wood long boards lately, and have used the spray on grip. Work pretty good
Shiloe Goodliffe I use the spray grip on my long boards, because the board is made out of beautiful hardwood, and the grip is clear. So you can see your nice hardwood deck :)
im thinking to try this but before transferring the images to the board, do i need to sand paper down the surface of the board to take out the coating thing of the blank deck first? Also does this technique works on blank color stain board (not color printed one)? Thank you!
Hiroki Toda hey there, yes you will definitely have to sand off any coating, so the wood can absorb the printer ink. If the board is stained and not clear coated, you might be able to make it work... if your able to do a test run on a scrap piece of wood, that would help. Good luck
Yeah. Do the first coat with a clear spray and then 2 finish coats with paint brush. If you use a paint brush on the first coat, you will probably smear the image.
If you press the image over a clear coat, it won’t seep into the wood, therefor it will take a long time to dry. Also, if you accidentally touch the image, it will smear super easy
J N I’m not sure if the white would be super bright, but if your transferring onto light wood, that would act as the lightest color. Lately I’ve been doing just black. Try a test run on a scrap
Benjamin john williams found out that you have to buy a specific printer that actually uses white ink. Most printers don’t print white they use the paper for the white
so if i were to sand my board then paint it white since i want my base to be white, would i still be able to use this technique to transfer the image onto the board?
Tyler Galang I’m not super sure, I haven’t done it with a base coat. It’s worth trying on a scrap first. I feel like the ink won’t dry because it can’t seep into the raw wood...
Chris Dowswell Photography yeah man for sure. If you want, you can check out my Instagram to see some of the shapes and boards I’ve made @the4221project
_Official_.Jacob it’s been a while since I’ve done it, but I think a might have given it a quick coat of clear spray (to seal it) Spray so you don’t potentially smear the fresh ink. Once that’s dry, roll on or paint brush with some polyurethane clear. In what ever finish you like. (I like satin) If your able to do a test on a piece of wood, you might be able to skip the spray and just apply with roller
dave morris I always used oil based polyurethane, only because I had a lot of it. It worked really well, and sealed the boards good. You might be able to use water base, once the ink hits the wood, it’s like it drys instantly. I’d do a test first
I've been looking for a tutorial on this for literal months. Now to try it on wood that's been primed with white primer !
This is such a thoughtful gift, you're a legend

You could put masking tape over the dried graphic
if you see this reply can you tell me how it went i want to do the same thing
Can you add a clear coat spray paint Over the dried graphic? I just don’t want it to get damaged too much 😅.
Diggin this SO MUCH!
Really appreciate this share. 🙏🏾🙏🏾
Really cool!
Badass!

@@Benjaminjohnwilliams amazing thanks for the advice. Good of you to reply, cheers bro.
Nice!
So you use transfer paper???
What about wax paper? Have you tried that as the transfer / carrier?
Out of Curiosity could you use like a wax paper or parchment paper?
Yep that works
That's awesome

Do you ever do spray on grip after doing the seal coat?
Shiloe Goodliffe I don’t so much on the carver and street decks. But I’ve made a couple solid wood long boards lately, and have used the spray on grip. Work pretty good

Yeah. Do the first coat with a clear spray and then 2 finish coats with paint brush.
If you use a paint brush on the first coat, you will probably smear the image.
Would inkjet transfer paper also work? instead of the envelop paper used in the video?
Maybe, give it a try. I don’t transfer that often, but usually I try to reuse the paper about 10 times. Just give it a wipe after the transfer
Do you think it will work on a clear coated wood or should it be needed to be flat wood?
Never mind, I thought it needed to sink in to the wood texture
If you press the image over a clear coat, it won’t seep into the wood, therefor it will take a long time to dry.
Also, if you accidentally touch the image, it will smear super easy
John Derrick Hembrador the ink is the standard ink out of an inkjet printer
@@Benjaminjohnwilliams Yeah, I figured, thank you : )
Ok so here is where I need your help. My graphics have a lot of white and white text. Is it going to print white or no

thx this work awesome

Sorry to bump this but I'm wondering if you ever ended up doing this with paint underneath @Tyler Galang
Odd Wheat Farmer i did try it and honestly it didn’t turn out on how i wanted it to so i wouldn’t recommend
Do I need to sand down the deck before doing this?
Yeah for sure, that way the ink can seep into the timber
What printer did you use ?
You can use any inkjet printer
Cool video... Where did you get that blank from?
Chris Dowswell Photography thanks man. I have my own skateboard press 😜
That's rad... Ever sell any?? Hard to find Raw, unfinished decks for painting, etc.@@Benjaminjohnwilliams
Chris Dowswell Photography yeah man for sure.
If you want, you can check out my Instagram to see some of the shapes and boards I’ve made
@the4221project
How would this look on darker wood?? 🤔
I honestly haven’t tried. I think most printers can’t print white, so any white wouldn’t pop as much.
Need to have an experiment
@@Benjaminjohnwilliams thank you for your answer 🤗
@@Benjaminjohnwilliams btw, I got so excited when I saw this video because I rly wanted to customise my longboard. 🙂👍
Cheer cheers, good luck ✌🏼
Hi Can I apply a coat of sealer on the image?
Mario Bueno yeah man! I coated this board with a water based poly 'minwax' I havnt really tried oil based. I like Water base, it's easy to work with
hey man, how long does the graphic lasts?
kevin wardhana hey man! the image lasts forever. Make sure you put a clear coat over it, which will help it last. It’s just like paint 👍🏼
what kind of ink did you use?
what do you use for your clear coat
_Official_.Jacob it’s been a while since I’ve done it, but I think a might have given it a quick coat of clear spray (to seal it)
Spray so you don’t potentially smear the fresh ink. Once that’s dry, roll on or paint brush with some polyurethane clear. In what ever finish you like. (I like satin)
If your able to do a test on a piece of wood, you might be able to skip the spray and just apply with roller
Does this work for T-shirts as well?
Thomas I haven’t tried it, sounds do able, but not sure how long the ink will last in the shirt through the wash...
@@Benjaminjohnwilliams that's what I'm worries about. Seems faster than a heat transfer though. I'm gonna try it on a hat too.
Would this work if I already have the board painted and I wanted the image to sit on top
Chris Haynes it will only work on raw wood, so the image can seep into the grain
@@Benjaminjohnwilliams ok thanks
whats a good sealer to use on inkjet prints doen this way?
dave morris I always used oil based polyurethane, only because I had a lot of it. It worked really well, and sealed the boards good.
You might be able to use water base, once the ink hits the wood, it’s like it drys instantly.
I’d do a test first

I made the board, I used to have my own skate press. I’ve sold it now

what? nooooway😮
buy sublimation paper it's cheaper, more effective and you don't have to pull off 500 stickers.
