- Radio jingle for Chevrolet in South Africa from 1974 - based on the 'Baseball, Hot Dogs, Apple Pie and Chevrolet' one used in the US. At that time, South Africa didn't have TV advertising (TV didn't arrive until 1976, with advertising two years later.)
At that time, large Chevrolets in South Africa were based on Holdens from Australia, with the Kommando/Constantia being similar to the Kingswood/Premier. Holden, of course, used 'Football, Meat Pies, Kangaroos aand Holden Cars' as its slogan.
South Africa, what's your favourite meal?
Braaivleis!
Sport?
Rugby!
Weather?
Sunshine!
And what's your greatest car, South Africa?
Chevrolet!
Let's see, that's braaivleis, rugby, sunny skies and Chevrolet, huh?
Right!
Well, you sure sound like South Africa to me!
We are!
We love braaivleis, rugby, sunny skies and Chevrolet, braaivleis, rugby, sunny skies and Chevrolet....
You know, that's so good, I think you'd better tell me again!
We love braaivleis, rugby, sunny skies and Chevrolet, braaivleis, rugby, sunny skies and Chevrolet....
In case you're wondering, this message was brought to you by braaivleis, rugby, sunny skies, and South Africa's greatest car!
They go together in the good old RSA -
Braaivleis with rugby, sunny skies and Chevrolet
Makes sense to me...
Braaivleis, rugby, sunny skies and Chevrolet
That's right...
In England, it would probably be "Cottage pie, cricket, Earl Grey, and Vauxhall cars".
You vauxhall all the way there & you vauxhaull all the way back.
@@jrvanzijl1999 And while you're there you do sweet Vauxhall.
Doesn't have quite the same ring to it does it?
"Football, toad-in-the-'ole, warm flat beer, and Vauxhall Cars"
Those were the best days of my life 💖
I remember this in 1974/5 on Springbok Radio.
Sorry Rumpleroofskin, but your dad did not write the jingle "Braaivleis, Rugby, Sunny Skies and Chevrolet". I did. In 1974 I was Creative Director of Quadrant International, which is McCann Ericson today, and which was part of the Interpublic Group at the time. I was responsible for the Chevrolet account and I spent time working in Detroit with Campbell Ewald, the General Motors agency at the time. There I came across the campaign based on "Baseball, Hot Dogs, Apple Pie and Chevrolet". Back in SA I adapted this to the well-known "Braaivleis ..." jingle in both English and Afrikaans and I am credited as the creator of this local campaign.
Hello Jo Visser. Wasn't it in fact Philip de Bruyn, your copywriter, who wrote the words to the South African jingle?
Was there ever a cinema version? As you know, TV didn't arrive until 1976 and TV advertising until two years later. (Rhodesia had TV, but sanctions meant there were no GM cars at all.)
Jo Visser Who wrote the words to the Australian version,Football Meat Pies Kangaroos and Holden Cars?
+Jo Visser Perhaps you're Rumpleroofskin's father...
Based on Ed Labunski's original jingle for USA Chevy
I live in Australia now but born In Cape town ,I still have my 1973Chev Elcamino "kingswood HQ" there .I still have the sales brocher here with me .hoping to have it here some day.
we had the chevy 4100...and before that a valiant baracuda...havent heard that jingle since...well 1974 lol
The car is actually a Holden HQ Statesman, slightly altered cosmetically for the South African market. The advertising jingle in Australia used the words Football, meat pies, kangaroos and Holden cars.
Thanks, but if you check the text below, I already pointed this out.
In America of course, it's Baseball, Hotdogs, Apple Pie and Chevrolet.
It was originally recorded in the US as 'Baseball, Hot Dogs, Apple Pie and Chevrolet' - local versions were written for Australia and South Africa.
I still have a 73 Elcamino with broucher:)
Cool ad, and right now on the TV they have a moment of silence, before the Brumbies and Western Force super 15 game,
Anzac day,
Lot of similarity between Aussies and South Africans
In Australia it be called HQ PREMIER
Just woke up and found this braaivleis sunny skies and chevy too tired for that
Classic! Thanks for uploading!
The Aussie Holden was exported and rebadged as a Chevy. They got the jingle too
South Africa was a nice place to live in these days, and people could afford nice things like Braaivleis and Chevrolet.
Even people of colour were better off in those days!
Love it
ha ha what a time I had in RSA !!😂🤣
...and what will the favourite car be in sunny RSA be today? After leaving us a 2nd time?...
We filmed a music video with a Chev Corvair. Filmed in the Swartberg Mountains. Set Me Free was the track. Used the same footage to edit video for Fools Rush In. Still have the rushes. They'd make for a fantastic TV ad marketing South Africa. Do you have any of the Melrose Cheese TV ads from the 80's?
Hahaha not quite the same as "Baseball, Hotdogs, apple pie and Chevrolet."
I didn't know they had Chevrolets in South Africa!
to get them where they needed to go?
Brilliant
I had the station wagon but now not sure if Constantine or Kommando
@FGalaxie Up to the 1960's, Chevrolets in SA were sourced from Canada - then when GM Canada stopped making right hand drive for export, SA switched to Aussie Holdens -as well as British Vauxhalls and German Opels. Nowadays they're Daewoos and Holdens.
In New Zealand it would be all blacks, bacon pies, sheep and Holden cars
Or maybe Kiwis, rugby, sunny skies and Chevrolet, as the Holden Statesman was sold as the Chevrolet 350 - ua-cam.com/video/SuOyjCUEY7U/v-deo.html
Vat my terug by die ou Transvaal! Sh#t this brings back memories, now we just need the 3 lt Ford, 2 lt Brandy and 1 lt coke.
my parents showed me this and i laughed my head off
Cortina XR6 Interceptor all the way boet

BAHAHAHAHA! Its a HQ Holden ! "Football, Meat-pies, Kangaroos and Holden cars"
HQ series - aka "The Golden Holden".
@bigfinau in the 1980s and 1990s it would have been braaivleis, apartheid, sunny skies and Opel, now it's braaivleis, ANC, sunny skies and Chevrolet
Sounds like he says FRIED EGGS
yeah we exported aussie holdens to africa
yeah I know but the accents of the people on the recording don't sound very south african if you know what I mean
@grumpycyclist Thanks for the info - accounts for why the accent didn't sound South African There isn't any any Biltong and Potroast footage on UA-cam, or even on the Biltong and Potroast website.
Was there an Afrikaans version of this?
@trossachs2003 These aren't 'real' Chevrolets, though - they're Aussie Holdens. South Africa got Chevrolets from Canada until the late 1960s, but switched to Holdens after GM Canada stopped right hand drive production. The Chevrolet 4100 in South Africa was an Opel Commodore - I think you'd be hard pressed to find a real 4100 in the US. :)
@trossachs2003 Well, they're certainly more 'real' than the badge-engineered Daewoos that we get now. Apparently Holdens were sold in SA until the late 1960s, before they became Chevrolets. The Chevrolet Lumina in SA is the Holden Commodore - interestingly it arrived there long after the Middle East, despite it being a right hand drive market.
Well, apart from the brand name and the tune of the song, there's not much that's American about it - Chevrolets in South Africa stopped being US-based years ago. The last time I was in South Africa, they drove on the left, followed rugby, cricket and soccer, and didn't spell 'colour' without a 'u'.
I still spell colour with a "u" - color is the American spelling.
The Commodore is sold in SA as a Chevrolet
kmfw72 The chevy SS here in the USA also from Holden..So are the Chevrolet police cars nowadays a Holden caprice..All have Chevrolet drivetrains tho....LS motors.
Badge marketing at its finest
why does it seem like this ad was recorded in Australia? or the US?
Jerram89 I don't think it was.
Sure - but it was commonplace on South African radio to have 'neutral' or 'standard' English - or in this case 'mid-Atlantic'.
I stand corrected but IF one of the individuals involved in this ad is someone I know, their English accent was not faux.
No, sorry, can't help you there - good luck though!
They're not real US Chevrolets. Mind you, now that the Daewoo name has been dropped in South Korea, Chevrolets are South Korean as well.
really.i didn't know that.i have no plans to put a chevy badge on my spark though.
Plesier.
rugby??
80% of population love football
was this ad only targeted towards Afrikaners or all South Africans
Well, it's from 1974. You tell me.
American here, how would rugby be considered a higher class sport than football? You pretty much need the same things as football pickup game. A ball, some people to play and maybe some trees if you want to kick it over. I legitimately dont understand. Is it a south african thing that rugby is the "afrikkaner sport" kinda like how basketball is the "black sport" in america? Again from another country dont understand thats why im asking
@bigfinau Psh ja whatevs man. Get over yourself for a bit, hey?
Aa
My dad wrote this
The day South Africans stop being Americanised is the moment I'll start having hope for the country. South Africans who want to become Americanised should emigrate. This is Africa.
Oh well, some Americans and South Africans have said that there should be more cultural exchanges between the two countries. South Africans generally tend to have a fascination for all things American. The two countries have also had similar histories. For instance both started out as partially Dutch and then British colonies.
It also seems that often whatever happens in the one country also happens in the other. For instance, in 1994 both countries moved more away from isolation and into the international community. In South Africa it was with the first democratic elections, and in the USA it was with the Soccer World Cup. (And then, South Africa moved more towards that with the 2010 Soccer World Cup.)
South Africans in the USA, and Americans in South Africa (There are for instance 4000 here at Cape Town.) can have a blending of the two cultures.
I'd say an example of cultural exchanges is with food, and an example is pumpkin recipes. Another example is with music, and an example is country music.
@@GoodVideos4 Nice positive post, thank you, though I do understand a bit where Orion3741 is coming from!
