The game those old men were playing is called "Chinese Chess." So, it was not checkers. Instead of making the chess pieces into different shape to symbolize its rank, the Chinese simply write a Chinese letter on the chess piece to indicate the its rank.
Me and family were in Xian end of June. We had a great time there and watching your video and seeing those familiar places we had visited brought back such sweet memories.
For those of you who've never been to China or about to go to China, here are some little tips: Many and more countries are allowed free visa to China for up tp 144 hours,; there's no tip culture, set up your phone with Alipay or Wechat Pay when you arrive, you won't survive without your phone; take Didi or Gaode for Taxi to save money, or offical taxi at least, the illegal taxi might charge you unreasonably; Don't book a hotel that's far away from your destination, because the city is larger that you might expect; finally, go to Beijing, Xi'an and Nanjing for history, Shanghai for modernization, Shenzhen for technology, Chengdu and Chongqing for leisure and food. 144 hours travel policy is open, welcome everyone.
It's not that illegal taxis may charge arbitrarily, but that normal taxis may charge arbitrarily, mainly by taking detours. I want to tell dear foreign friends here that this is very important.
Also please print all your itineraries and visas before you come, to show the immigration officers. Smoothens things a lot. And DON'T COME DURING GOLDEN WEEK (1st week of October) OR CHINESE NEW YEAR (Lunar New Year).

There is a saying that before the soldiers went to war, Emperor Qin Shi Huang ordered the creation of terracotta warriors, each modeled after the unique appearance of individual soldiers. These terracotta figures were meant to be buried with him, symbolizing that the soldiers could continue to fight for their beloved emperor even after death.

29:55 - they're playing Chinese Chess. It's basically the same as the Chess you might know in the west, The major difference is that pieces move along the LINES instead of within squares. Chinese chess also comes with an additonal piece called a "cannon" (2 of them). Also, no queens in Chinese chess, just the king. The Cannon captures by leapfrogging over another piece. The "bishops" guard the king and can only move inside a small designated area around the king. Pawns capture straight ahead instead of diagonally. Also, knights CAN be blocked in Chinese chess - the first move must be a straight line, before doing a diagonal jump. If a piece is blocking that straight line the knight can't "jump". Otherwise, very similar rules apply. You can google "Chinese Chess" and see the rules yourself.

The “jelly” you mentioned in the video is written as “凉粉” in Chinese(or "liangfen"in pinyin) Liangfen, or cold jelly noodles, is typically made from starch as the main ingredient. Common types of starch used include mung bean starch, pea starch, sweet potato starch, or corn starch. To make it, the starch is mixed with water to create a slurry, then heated and cooked until it thickens. Once it cools, it solidifies into a jelly-like consistency. It’s then cut into pieces and served with seasonings like garlic sauce, vinegar, and soy sauce, making it a refreshing summer snack.

Bell Tower: The Bell Tower was used to signal the start of the day. Each morning, a large bell would ring to mark sunrise, symbolizing the beginning of daily activities in the city. 2. Drum Tower: The Drum Tower, in contrast, was used to mark the evening. Drums were beaten at dusk, signaling the end of the day and indicating it was time to close the city gates. This system helped maintain order in ancient cities, as residents relied on these sounds to regulate their daily routines. Both towers were crucial for timekeeping before modern clocks and reflect Xi’an’s rich history as a former capital and center of culture.
The sheer joy and wonder you radiate are so genuine they infect me with a sense of joy and wonder every time as well. Thank you for sharing the journey with us.
Great episode and even better that you took the feedback graciously and started to think before you say something in English without trying to sound fancy:) 😊
Hehe we only post our videos here on UA-cam, and then on Facebook - it is too difficult to use another account as well which is in Chinese! But it seems like other people are already copying our video on there hehe!
Xi'an is not only an ancient capital of China, but also a modern city full of magic and hope. It is also the future city, where the ancient and the modern coexist, which is extremely beautiful.
1:45 Taiwan belongs to China, which is a point that the Chinese government has been stressing all over the world. One of the ways Western media often tease the Chinese government is to put up maps of China that do not include Taiwan. If you are traveling in China, or have ideas for the Chinese market, don't make this mistake.
In Xi’an (even though I’m not from there), the real local specialties are 肉夹馍 (“rou jia mo” in pinyin, pronounced like row-jyah-moh [ˈroʊ dʒɑː moʊ]) and 羊肉泡馍 (“yang rou pao mo” in pinyin, pronounced like yahng-row pow-moh [jæŋ roʊ paʊ moʊ]). These dishes are the pride of Xi’an and Shaanxi Province. Roujiamo is often called the “Chinese hamburger,” made with stewed, flavorful meat stuffed into a crispy flatbread. Yangroupaomo is a hearty lamb soup where pieces of flatbread are torn into the broth, making it rich and filling. 烤包子(Kao baozi), or baked buns, is actually a traditional snack from the Uyghur culture, mainly popular in the Xinjiang region. Eating baked buns in Xi’an isn’t a bad choice, but it’s just not the real deal-it’s kinda like ordering pizza in England, you get what I mean? Haha!
Lovely cover about Xi'An! I love this city as well. But accessing the internet was a big problem for me, especially with Google services. How did you do it? Which internet provider did you use?
We were using a VPN, so were still able to access google, although it has no pins in China really, so there's no need to be on google cause there's almost no information on there haha!
Qin Shi Huang sent many people to search for the elixir of life, some of them went to Japan and never came back, because it was a drug that did not exist.
I bet that was a wonderful experience for you guys to take a taste of our Chinese culture in another way when you immersed yourself in this historical hub. anyway welcome to my hometown.

This system helped maintain order in ancient cities, as residents relied on these sounds to regulate their daily routines. Both towers were crucial for timekeeping before modern clocks and reflect Xi’an’s rich history as a former capital and center of culture.
I went to Xi'an 17 years ago. I think it has changed loads!
It probably has! So much of China is changing so rapidly!

Great episode and even better that you took the feedback graciously and started to think before you say something in English without trying to sound fancy:) 😊
Haha I definitely don't try to sound fancy! Please remember English is my second language!
Thank you so much!

did you forget the password of Bilibili, lots of fans waiting for you
Hehe we only post our videos here on UA-cam, and then on Facebook - it is too difficult to use another account as well which is in Chinese!
It's just a map about timezones, not a real map. It was just the first one I found on Google
Quite a few beautiful places your visiting and as long as your enjoying this stunning places ❤
I love your videos. They are beautiful and your vibe is 🔝
Thank you so much!!
30:00 They are playing Chinese chess😊
That's so cool!
Haha!
Meats and peanut dish looks yummy 😋
It was so yummy!
Xian, what an amazing city! Would love to see it with my own eyes! ❤😊
Nice 👍 travel daily dose 😊
Lovely cover about Xi'An! I love this city as well. But accessing the internet was a big problem for me, especially with Google services. How did you do it? Which internet provider did you use?
We were using a VPN, so were still able to access google, although it has no pins in China really, so there's no need to be on google cause there's almost no information on there haha!
@2Passports1Dream which VPN is it that you use?
May have missed it, but how much per night for that Sheraton Suite? Looks huge.
Not sure how much the suite was because we got upgraded, but we paid about £60 per night!
Qin Shi Huang sent many people to search for the elixir of life, some of them went to Japan and never came back, because it was a drug that did not exist.
They were playing Chinese Chess.
Ohhhh! We've never heard of it!
every time watching your videos is enjoyable,谢谢(xiexie)😁
I bet that was a wonderful experience for you guys to take a taste of our Chinese culture in another way when you immersed yourself in this historical hub. anyway welcome to my hometown.
Thank you so much!!
29:55 The men were playing Chinese chess. Similar to Western chess, it has king, rook, bishop, queen, knight, and pawn.
That's so cool! Thanks
