    I swear, Lorne Lanning is one of the smartest people/storytellers of that generation. He knew the time to get into game making, he knew its limitations, but most of all, he knew how to make an interesting world. Oddworld Abe's Oddysee was truly ahead of it's time. As Sherry McKenna said, they really took the best aspects of interactive games and combined it with the quality storytelling of the movie industry. Even something as simple as a healthy work environment was something they looked into; something game developers struggle with even to this day... He really broke boundaries between story and gameplay, making your interactions with the world around you so much more important. What's even MORE surprising to me is how much he ALREADY had planned up until this point!! When he talked about already knowing the story arcs for Munch and Squeek I flipped out! What else can I say, its a good game series XD.

      Reading behind the scenes stuff, he basically abandoned the Quintology after Munch’s Oddysee failed. Admitted he didn’t know what consumers wanted and went all in on an action shooter Oddworld Stranger, which became Stranger’s Wrath, and was planning another action game around a character Fangus Klot which they cancelled after Stranger flopped.

    What a great story. Amazing dream team of Oddworld Inhabitants. And Lanning himself - oh man. Incredibly handsome, incredibly smart, gifted and humble at the same time - both then and now. Abe's Oddyssee blew my mind when I was a teenager. Now I've found the game and decided to remind myself how incredible experience that was. And as an adult woman, now in my thirties I decided to check out who was the creator of that amazing game that delighted someone like me, who has never been a great fan of games. I knew it must have been someone extraordinary. And here we go. I've watched almost all interviews with Lorne Lanning. I could listen to this guy for hours. Such an inspiration!

    Such fond memories of this game and Exoddus. I was like 6 and had to get my Mum to read me a guide for saving all 99 of the Mudokons in Oddysee because when I completed the game the first time, I was nowhere near to saving them all and Abe died in the ending cinematic! I was blown away by how many secret areas there were, and you would have NEVER known they were there without a guide.. you can tell how much easier games have become by the New N Tasty remaster, most of the secret areas are a lot more obvious and generally have some form of visual clue.

    • @mr.g-sez
      @mr.g-sez 3 роки тому +2

      the visual clues were always there. like falling stones the barrels and the green soulstorm bottles in exoddus. but it was really really hard to find them all without a guide.

      @@mr.g-sez yeah you gotta admit its way harder to notice them in the original then in New N Tasty though, the first few for instance are red hatches you open in the remake before that they were hidden behind meat barrels and you had a little white pixel dot to notice it haha, then again I was 6 and New to video games so I'm no doubt nostalgically biased 😂

    Loved the Ars Technica War Stories interview. Especially the extended version. Crazy to see baby faced Lorne and, wait that’s the same guy. Hah. The oddworld universe is captivating because of the passion/integrity of vision, as well as the application of knowledge and team. Amazing video that gives me a window into processes I was only seeing the surface of as a kid. Up to this point I looked back on Abe’s Odysee as one my my favorite games and had no idea the world continued with sequels and such, so part of my childhood excitement is reawakened. Just ordered new n tasty for switch, and soulstorm for ps5, and I don’t even have a ps5 yet.

    If you look at the best games of all time. They are almost all created by aspiring artists/directors. Hideo Kojima is one of the best film directors of our generation in my opinion. There are soooo many good stories yet to be told out there, and the technology is better than its ever been, yet there is an incredible lack of depth to most modern video games. Guys like Lorne and Hideo Kojima who own their own production houses typically make the best content. We need more of them.

    It makes so much sense that their Models for the cutscenes are so good, they had actual great anatomical shapes sculpted in real life.
    Now we can easily sculpt on our machines, but man. It's just still when I see some super 4K model thing today sculpted meticulously just on a machine, it doesnt' compare to Oddworld's cutscene models, where you get the feeling that the sculpture in real life is heavy and could be less solid than it looks, and has all this curvature and stuff that translate to the machine different somehow.
    Like yeah, those sculptures just must've done something for the art, it feels much more real when you look at it.
    if it's like Lorne said, they used a tool to go around and place every vertice manually and then creating the model faces in the modelling software, it's no wonder it seems so special, that's wildly different from just doing it in the model software from ground zero, someone got hands on with that model they know how it feels, what it took to put it together, and it's just a different process, like finger painting.
    I can come back and watch any video with Lorne in it, not to give him all the credit I'm sure the entire team back then was brilliant and still are.
    But this guy he just gets it lol, he got it and understood it already back then.

    • @JoshuaRM
      @JoshuaRM 6 років тому +9

      To answer your question, Squeek's Oddysee would have most likely happened after Stranger's Wrath if it wasn't for EA's negative influence on the company. They forced them to go under for a long time due to screwing up their marketing and of course, treating them like slaves. You make a deal with EA, you know you're in the shit, but obviously Oddworld Inhabitants didn't know that at the time. I'm hoping we'll see Squeek's Oddysee after Soulstorm.
