Man I’m so glad I found this video!! I have a 93 LS and I noticed white smoke at start up and at first I thought I had bad valve seals or piston rings but I noticed that I was loosing power steering fluid but wasn’t leaking anything and I was so confused!! You saved me so much time and money, thank you man
I'm having the same white smoke problem on my 1999 LS400. It Idles, revs, and runs great, but every now and then when I start it a puff of white smoke comes out! I will fix this power steering air control valve immediately along with my valve cover gaskets. Thank you!
u really deserve 5 start charp u saved u $$$ bro i hard same issues losing fluid soo fast blowing white smoke in my exhaust with no leaks and mechanics were suggesting hauling engine block installing new pistons, crank shaft and the likes basically spoiling a working engine but when i fell on your information i was relating i hard my problem fixed thanks a bunch
This video is the answer 3 repair shops could not figure out. I had 3 steering racks replaced this year. first one lasted 50 miles, second one lasted 7 months but leaked. Last one seems ok but using fluid daily and smoking on start up. And it smelled bad like I was adding transmission fluid to the intake. Thank you so much for this video. I just changed the vacuum control module and no more smoke no more fluid loss and I can accelerate like I use to.. thank you thank you thank you👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
I have a 2002 Land Cruiser series 100 with exactly the same problem. I purchased an after market Air Valve (to save some $$) and it didn’t work. I was braking my head looking for the missing fluid and it so happened to be inside the Air Flow Canister…. Thank you for the video Matt...
this is my problem i believe. thanks for this video. my mechanic brought it up as a rare problem and boom here it is... i have a 2003 lexus sc430. about to purchase a power steering air control valve now. i had the white smoke and other symptons. Thanks for the video
1st generation Rav4 has the same valve. I didn't realize that they came apart like that. Unfortunately i broke one of the plastic vacuum ports off mine. Thanks for the info
Great Video Matt...I have a question: what is the correct reconnection orientation of the vacuum lines to the intake and the manifold...I mean which tubes on the valve connect to where? Or maybe it doesn't matter??? Please help.
The orientation should not matter because the 2 vacuum lines are a series circuit between the manifold and the throttle body, and the low pressure air is either allowed to leak past the throttle body when hydraulic steering resistance is sensed it opens the air path to make the engine "Up-Idle" ~100 more RPM from baseline, and when their is no more steering pressure, the air valve closes and the Idle speed returns to the lower normal Idle speed. It's a feature of Lexus quality, and a more pleasurable driver experience when every engine system is fully functional.
My 91 LS400 is experiencing this Power Steering leakage into the intake because the idle up valve went bad. I bought the replacement part but how the heck do you get the old one off the car?! I have a 17mm open end but it's too short to reach the old valve from the bottom. Do I need a specialty wrench for this, like a "slim line", 8-10" long 17mm upen end to remove this thing?
I just broke one of the nipples on mine, so I ordered a used one from flea-bay. now I know how to check it before I put it on the car! Thanks! The guts of my old one were still working, so if I get bad o-rings or backup rings, I can just swap the guts.
Dude I've read so many forums and vids. Yours the best!! Dude best explaination of EVERYTHING. Everything you said put my puzzle together, and save me many more hours of headaches. Not from car, but from my old lady bugging me about her car. Thanks man.
Lexus calls for ATF in the power steering fluid, not power steering fluid. Yet, there is no cautionary sticker nor warning label on power steering reservoir. I would bet that a lot of service stations and non-Lexus garages top off with power steering fluid, not perhaps having access to Lexus Owners' Manual. Would PSF damage valve or power steering if ATF isn't used? I own '97 LS400 same color as your example here. It just turned 181,000 mile without the slightest break-down. I did have belts and water pump kit changed over and tune-up, but that's it.
I have 1990 Lexus ls400. I have white smoke when I start the car. Then after it warms up. Smoke appears from driver side head. Looking at it from underneath smoke is leaving coming off the exhaust. I did see smoke come out the coolant reservoir.
i got this problem on my 3rz-fe engine.. does this problem cause the engine light to turn on? When diagnosed, it indicate the Idle Air Control error.. Thanks
I just replaced my pressure hose on my sc400 I’m getting the white smoke 💨 coming out on my startups... I remember seeing this valve on the hose connected on the banjo part of the line that connects to the ps pump. I’m going to order the new part. Should I seafood the intake after I change out the parts?
I have the exact problem. Tons of power steering fluid is poured into this car and I see no leaks. Big white cloud and rough idle. What are the steps to replace it?
So i just replaced my PS Pump, rack and pinion, alternator, and tensioner. I bled the system and everything. While the car is jacked uo the steering is fine but as soon as i lower it, the steering is extremely stiff. I drove it and the steering frees up when i give it gas but as soon as i dont amd slow down the steering gets stiff on me again. Any ideas as to why this is happening? Ive searched all over and cant find an answer to it. I have a 97 ls400.
Hey Matt, I'm not a mechanic. I have swapped engines in my 72 k10 pickup so I'm not a total newbie but my daaughters SC400 needs a power steering pump...we think. Is this a job someone of my low skill level can perform?
Okay I have this problem and I went and got a Lexus ACV. I look in the shop manual and I don't see where these hoses go but apparently one of them goes to the throttle body when I look at the ACV valve I only see one hose hooked up to one of the nipples ..the other plastic nipple has no hose attached to it. Where would that hose go?
I replaced mine with a $15 aftermarket part. It failed again in one week. I have heard it can be bypassed with NO consequences. Maybe the LS400 8 cylinder engine is powerful enough that the idle boost of 200rpm doesn't make any difference. To my mechanic's mind, it is kind of stupid to induce a vacuum leak in order to boost the rpm.
Hello My car acts as if it is misfiring also white smoke again my vehicle is whining when i turn or accelerate i do not lose any fluid...will that be the problem mybe??
Hi I recently did my timing my self and I pretty much fucked up I think so you have a email or something to kinda get a walkthrough on what I can do or should do please an thank you kinda wish I seen your video before I dived into timing job
What is the big puffs of white smoke were from that? I lost all my power steering my steering is hard as a rock but one of my boots on my rack and pinion is shredded. Could it be that as well? I just don't want to spend the money to get a new rack and pinion, or power steering pump if I don't need too but the humming from the pump stopped and I don't have any power steering whatsoever. Please get back to me, thanks
in this case due to the amount of money and labor needed I may say to go ahead and change both. this way you are not having to go back 6 months later and replace one or the other because you did not already do it. it will save money and time in the long run.
What I did was use a pry bar bend the metal line away from the valve and you need a small 17mm wrench. Go from underneath. Also make sure to unhook your negative cable I forgot too and tapped the alternator lol so be careful.
Same exact problem with 2002 toyota tundra 4.7L SR5 CODE P0300 P0301 P0308, replaced twice. Symptoms are slight power steering leak, rough idle, white smoke from exshaut. Need to clean throttle body because of build up of burnt power steering fluid. WTF Toyota!!!

I thought W.O.T. meant Wide Open Throttle but I like your woot sound much better, 👍that's funny.
this is my problem i believe. thanks for this video. my mechanic brought it up as a rare problem and boom here it is... i have a 2003 lexus sc430. about to purchase a power steering air control valve now. i had the white smoke and other symptons. Thanks for the video
great info to the tee, white smoke from the start of engine and refill of power steering fluid. Now I know what to replace. thank you
Omg thank you. I seriously was thinking head gaskets!
Same here!! Will check my valve tomorrow!
i got the white smoke too , replaced everything but the valve , until i seen this video, replaced it works now Thanks
Glad it helped
blessss you for this video and all other LS tutorials. almost every problem i have experience you have a video for 💯
1st generation Rav4 has the same valve. I didn't realize that they came apart like that. Unfortunately i broke one of the plastic vacuum ports off mine. Thanks for the info
thanks for the information, glad you and family are feeling better

Does it matter which vacuum hose is connected to which of the two ports on the valve? Or is there a unique in and out configuration?
Dude I've read so many forums and vids. Yours the best!! Dude best explaination of EVERYTHING. Everything you said put my puzzle together, and save me many more hours of headaches. Not from car, but from my old lady bugging me about her car. Thanks man.
Could I use an aftermarket IACV instead of the oem it’s just too expensive! And if you used an aftermarket IACV, which one did you use?
Is it easy to remove? do you just twist it off by hand or do you need a wrench
My 1993 4runner v6 it's fixed 🙌 thanks bro!!
Glad to help
FYI, after looking through Matts's other videos I believe this is a 1995 Lexus LS 400
Lexus calls for ATF in the power steering fluid, not power steering fluid. Yet, there is no cautionary sticker nor warning label on power steering reservoir. It’s probably due for a timing belt, you don’t want that to break when running.
I have 1990 Lexus ls400. I have white smoke when I start the car. Then after it warms up. Smoke appears from driver side head. Looking at it from underneath smoke is leaving coming off the exhaust.
I did see smoke come out the coolant reservoir.

Having the same issue currently with white exhaust on startup, cel light code iCV rought idle and reverse on the tranny not working
This is my question as well. My mechanic was befuddled why the engine light came back on. He's blaming overcharging of the alternator.
Thanks for the water pump advice
No problem 👍

Did you ever figure it out my ls smokes on start and low rpm hesitation kind of feels like a misfire sit at 200 at idle
@@majestics7748 any updates? having similar issues with my SC400
Did you have to redo the water pump bc you did not use a gasket or will just re dealing with RTV work as well
Brother I’m having the same issue, except I have a flashing CEL and TRAC OFF light. Any ideas to what it may be?
Just subscribed love the way u go into details💯
Whats the easiest way to tell if its leaking? Im losing ps fluid and dont know fs where its going but my guess is either there or someone in the rack
Thank you for all details. 94 LS

Great job with your explanation and details, thanks
Where can I get the vacuum hoses that get clapped on the power steering control valve?
Congratulations my friend! What is the function of this valve? How does it work? Is it to speed up the engine or soften the steering?
That's my question. Periodically I'm getting hard steering.
Thank you. This video was so helpful. I was having the same problems. Hit me up. I need guidance on removing mine.
Email me highgrooveauto30@gmail.com id be happy to help
i have a 92 sc400 everytime i start it up white smoke out the back. i always thought it might be and oil leak or something. going to check this out
update i deleted the sensor and the leak stopped
did you have a low idle/idle jump?
theres a new one on rock auto for about 40$ is that any good?
Much respect bro
Will this cause white smoke on start up I have a bad power steering pump

Will ATF in my throttle body ruin my motor? Is it safe to temporarily drive the vehicle while the new sensor comes in the mail?
Hey i have a 96 ls400 like urs it starts n dies won't idle I've checked fuel it's good I did spark plugs n wires what it could it be
Hey mate would a 1uzfe power steering pump would fit a 3UZ-FE cheers mate.
But how’d u take this piece off
Very helpful! Thank you!
Can you make a video on how to remove it??
Hello
My car acts as if it is misfiring also white smoke again my vehicle is whining when i turn or accelerate i do not lose any fluid...will that be the problem mybe??
What does that even do for the power steering?

Getting this done at a shop Monday lol

Mine completely blew in half yesterday. Completely separated the plastic from the metal.
Outstanding!
Thank you kindly!
This will also apply to the SC300 and SC400!
Great video💯
Thanks 💯
How’d you remove it?
Can these leak externally. I have a leak getting on my alternator on my 1999 ls400
Yes they can.
Mine leaked externally. Had to buy an aftermarket one since mine was discontinued. 😞
Power steering pressure switch is this?
If I "delete" the air control valve will it hurt the motor in any way?
I would not suggest it.
Not suggest to change it or it won't hurt the motor?
@@rafaelmartinez6287 It will not hurt the engine...but it could have a slight effect on performance in cold weather. No biggie.
Does the 98 ls400 have this same valve?
I think so
Hello sir... I am having a hard time removing this underneath. How did you remove it? Thanks
Actual unit ...use a dwell socket. The rest is as ya say
hey I'm having the same issue. What did you end up doing?
What I did was use a pry bar bend the metal line away from the valve and you need a small 17mm wrench. Go from underneath. Also make sure to unhook your negative cable I forgot too and tapped the alternator lol so be careful.
What year is your car?
Lexus sc400 v8 idling low 500 rpm please help
I replace new ones but now the spring come out on back of the valve
Will this cause loose or sloppy steering?
Will that make car act like it's missfiring
yes!
Thanks
Can you tell me how does that work to make it do that
power steering fluid gets sucked up into the intake and gets into the cylinders.
Ok i changed it out most of the spuddering is gone but it doesn't have smooth idle
