- Topps has been producing baseball cards since 1952, but that does not mean that Topps does not try to innovate. These inovations have been given the name "Gimmicks" from outside baseball card data bases. Since purchasing Topps Fanatics has introduced a lot of Gimmicks. Some good, some bad. In this video I break down all 14 Fanatics gimmicks that I could think of and discuss why I liked or disliked each of them.
As a marketer myself, I appreciate the attempts they're making to be creative. However, the best marketers fully understand their audience and give them what they want. Many of these don't hit the mark.
I feel like they are sitting there laughing at collectors every time they come up with one of these dumb ideas and collectors eat them up lol. At this point I think they are just seeing how far they can push it and still get people to chase. It's an L for the hobby imo
When the system forces all companies to come up with quarterly strategies on making profit for your investors we endcup with garbage like this happening.
Although the hobby has already began the turn on these shifty napkin patches from the Walmart rack and lower end sets. So maybe they will need to change up this downward trend they are on.
They have ample chance to profit off sports cards long term. Just can't be dumb about things to give breakers more content to fake get excited about
The Frozen Fractors still upset me. The whole point of the negative numbering was that they were numbered “subzero”, but then in chrome update they just numbered them normally /5🤦🏻♂️
The taco and frozen fractors need to not exist imo and the throwback 1st and the worst
I genuinely miss the short prints before the golden mirror I get they became really overprinted but I’m just a sucker for image variations
As a Jackson Chourio collector, I'm ecstatic that I have a game-used base Topps Now card from his debut on the way for the price of a box of Inception. It's a poor man's rookie debut patch, and if I truly wanted to get it autographed, I could get that in person. I'm interested to see how Topps handles their top debuting rookies heading into chrome and the late-year releases, and if we get any new gimmicks.

You left out the MVP Buyback program, which I would have had at #1 or #2 on your list - agree with you the Debut Patch is an awesome idea.

Great recap Scottie! It is a tough position to be in as a Set-designer/Marketing person at Fanatics. You would have to appeal to both collectors as well as investors when coming up with new product while maximizing profits all the while trying to keep hobby integrity & excitement going.
One thing I do not see (At least at any of the shops or shows I have been to recently) are card company employees present and talking to collectors (Both young and old) about what they like in sets. When card companies are on-site,
It is always geared to giveaways and swag. Maybe asking questions like:
1.). What is your all-time or current favourite set and why?
2.). What do you miss in the hobby that you wish would re-appear ?
3.). What don’t you miss from days gone by ?
Of course you could do this digitally but then it’s not the same as you would not see or hear a collectors excitement/disappointment when they are providing feedback. Leaning in and listening is always a great tactic and I think Fanatics would to well to stay connected and engaged with customers.
As for the investors, it’s the Wild West out there. Here as well, direct input and feedback from customers is paramount. If you are willing to look at dropping premium money on boxes, packs, and singles what is your vision of hobby success (Other than to make $$$ of course).
Fanatics knows there really isn't anything they could possibly do at this moment that will keep wax from being opened at high prices. The dumber the better it seems.

Golden Mirror went too far. I collected a team set each year of my favorite team, including SPs and SSPs, but a parallel of every player at that scarcity makes it cost prohibitive. I preferred the different levels and limited to a handful of players.
Also missed Topps follow back cards that started a year or two ago. It says on the fine print that the player can stop following you for any reason lol.
I personally like this as a collector over 30 years. It creates excitement and fun chase. I'm glad Fanatics is doing this because Topps cards were kind of boring in the Chase Department.
I recently, very recently, purchased a Bowman Inception foil, gold ink of Kevin Alcantara. I believe it is an on card auto. I will check, but i think it is on the card? Took a magnifying glass - indeed the auto is on card. Bad news, it is a psa 10 and there is a dent in the frosted area that should have precluded the 10 designation!
Is the Brady part of retrofractors? That was the biggest chase
I like this list it's a great look at what fanatics had done well so far with bringing new chase elements. I hope that when they get the NBA and NFL licenses they get new sets that they haven't done or Panini's never done. I just hope that they don't kill the hobby all together it's definitely a possibility with what they are doing with LCS's and distribution. I want to see price's go down instead of what is going on currently it makes me not want to buy any of this marked up no ROI and taking losses like it's the cool thing to do.

Yes, right now the prices of somebody’s boxes are absolutely out of control pretty much all of them. $500-$1000 for a box with five cards to 5 packs, chances are you’re not gonna be too happy 90% of the time
I feel like the Holliday parallels bling in the big league line not the main line
I really liked the auto RC patch debut until I found out they are just peel off stickers. 😦👎 Best gimmick award should be the game used cards that players worn in their pockets while playing & than had them signed. 😄👍
My favorite player is Aaron judge. I pulled a “team logo” parallel of him in a fat pack and was confused cuz I didn’t know what it was at the time. Pretty sweet card

Licensed Pete Rose cards is pretty bad ass, honestly
I agree with that. I do not like retrofractors for retired players, but it is good to see Rose in a Topps set!
I think there were only 4-5 Phillies cards that had it. I pulled one and sold it for like 400. When I saw it , it was flipped over backwards and saw it was numbered to 52 and I was like what in the world is that. I hate the tacofractors, I say that because I collected the whole Cincinnati reds set and thought it would be something like get to meet the player or something and then saw it was tacos and they didn't make the playoffs.
Inception first milestones was my favorite from the list. So much better than a random relic. Card that has genuine staying power over the course of players career.
I don't mind any of these, the Blaster Holiday are my least favorite.
The Tacofractors, aren't really any different than the Home Run Challenge cards. I don't mind them especially since it is a SSP to 5, but only with the free taco promotion.
I personally think the Retrofractor is fun. If they do it for 1 player a year and keep it to a very small number of autos. No base, just Gold or less parallels.
I like they are trying new things, I just hope they don't see what people like, like the True Photo or Team Color, and double the print run next year.
The worst thing is when you pull a "SP" card and go to Ebay and see 40 of them for sale.
Call me a nerd, but i really like most of the "gimmicks". I could do without some of the holiday stuff but I really like the true photograph and Golden mirrors as well! I didn't realize how few there were...

Fun list! The Taco Fractor came around once they announced the Taco Bell tie in.
Remember, these are the guys that came up with those big player cut-outs you would stick to your wall as a kid. The lame gimmicks have been around and will continue for years to come.

I completely forgot HFA. I love them, but they are far, far too common. For that reason they would be around 6-10. If they were more rare, like a Downtown, they would be easily top 5. Thanks for watching!
I can't get over how ugly tacofractors are, and announcing the prize so far after release killed the gimmick for me. My hot take is that True Photo is a loser. If I wanted a wallet photo I'd probably not buy cards. I want designs on my card unless it's 53 Bowman and they actually put effort into the photography

Great job. I like a positive video like this because I think its great Topps is trying new things. I hope they refine their process a little more, and not do gimmicks just for the sake of trying to "innovate" *cough, frozen fractors, cough*, but great review, and I hope you can do this again with basketball and football

These are super gimmicky, but you cant wrong topps for trying to add additional value to boxes. Not to mention if these were basketball or football they would be saught after. Baseball collectors dont like change and thats the issue with these cards.
I agree with all of what you said. Baseball collectors hate change. I think that is what makes baseball cards special, but it definitely puts Topps in a tough spot at time.
@@scottiebcards2354 i think things will change when topps can produce other sports and arent just relying on baseball for income. Plus it allows them to establish brands that will be important in basketball and football like definitive.
The 1/1 First card has to be the worst. Absolutely atrocious idea, and even worse execution.

the failed attempts at generating excitement over most marketing gimmicks wears thin tbh most people are NOT chasing this stuff
When RARITY/SCARCITY of cards makes value, EVERYTHING that makes a card stand out IS important! "Ebay 1/1" definitely matter and people that complain about it are DUMB! If YOU have one, you DEFINITELY will make more off of it by highlighting it, stop crying!

Gimmicks that are pumped by their paid influncer and breaker partners. Fanatics does not care about the hobby! They care about money and the influncers are just grifters who push these gimmicks to keep their allocations and stay in good graces with Fanatics!!!!!
