Great honest, detailed review. I was thinking about it, but will stick with my Kodabow or will purchase an Excalibur in the future. Spend over $1200 dollars to get a bow that you have to spend about $300 dollars more to fine tune and to keep shooting. What happens if it is in the middle of hunting season. It definitely looks great, but...
I have an r 10, and the deciding factor was the cocking and de-cocking feature. I cannot use the pull cord system due to arthritic hands and shoulders. I knew the issues with proprietary bolts, nocks and strings, but the information on this video is helpful. I am a long way from any pro-shop or Ravin dealer, so string or cam problems are going to be expensive. All that said, I have never fired a cross bow until this one and so far I am impressed with the accuracy. Since I have a waiver to use this in archery season ( ADA required disability) I will be able to enjoy archery season with my son again. At 73 that is no small thing! Be sure to check scope requirements for archery season use, Colorado does not allow any more than a one power scope during these seasons.
Very good review. Just got the R26. Will be keeping an eye on the strings and cams. The knock tool idea is great. Will see if the dampers work better on the 26. All in all great job.
Thanks for the info! I've been thinking heavy about buying one, But honestly I'm gonna back out and buy something else. In my opinion for spending that kind of money on a bow they really shouldnt have any flaws.
I have since bought a Ten point Viper S 400..I highly recommend that as a alternative..Having said that, I have not had any major issues with my 2 R10s other than strings every 400 shots...However, mine were built by Ravin before they sold out to the commercial company
Not a crossbow person, due to my age, but did enjoy the honesty from this review. Very informative. But as of yet seen the recticle of the scope. I am very inquest.
The reticle goes to 100 yards in 10 yd increments. It is nice, but a little busy. They do not gather a lot of light though, but they are red and green lighted
It's concerning to see all these problems for a $1,500 product (the new R29 and R26 are $2,000 and $2,500). (BTW, that's serious money to most hunters). It seems like they got the shooting right (which is of course top priority), but they missed out on the other fine details that make working with the bow successful. I have a TenPoint and was thinking of buying Ravin. Maybe I'll wait another year. I hope Ravin sees this comment because my guess is others are thinking the same thing.
David Greenapple I agree! How you going to spend $2000+ and then have all these problems? I used a Barnett WTP STR and I hated it because there were so many string problems and Barnett kept sending me servings and none of them fit my bow...ended up selling the bow on eBay and bought me an Excalibur Bulldog 440. Since I bought the recurve I have had nothing but great experience with the bow. Yes. They have wider limbs but I don’t care. There’s only one string to replace and you can do that by yourself. You never have to worry about dialing the bow in and I paid $1399 for the bow and it chronos at 450FPS. Again, they have wider limbs but I have NO PROBLEMS with cam lean and string wear and the bow comes standard with a silent charger ext. with about 16 rotations the bow is fully cocked. I never had to worry about any problems and the accuracy is still there even with the airbrakes/SDS kit installed. I like how narrow the Ravin’s are but I would not spend $2000+ just to have cam lean and string wear issues. There are just too much going on with compound bows. The most expensive crossbow Excalibur sells is $1799 for the Assassin 420TD. You can use that all day and then take it apart and then use it some more and have no problems with accuracy. My Bulldog is faster than any Ravin and it was only $1399+ tax and it comes with a lifetime warranty that follows the person who owns the bow. There’s no issues with string wear or whatever.
I didn't realize there were so many issues with the Ravin. I just bought the R20 and am awaiting its arrival. Now I'm wondering if it too will have the same issues. Thanks for your honest review. 👍🏽🙂
I swapped out the Nocks in my Ravin bolts with the lighted nocks myself with no special tools. First shot went through 2 shoulders and lungs. Then used the same bolt and lighted nocks (new broadhead) and shot a boar. Entire arrow was consumed into the Boar. No exit. In fact the nock was lit under the skin of the boar. Arrow snapped but nock still lights up after putting it on another bolt.
Thanks for the info. I have an R9 that I have put over 300 shots through. I love to shoot this! No string or cable wear yet. (KNock on wood). Something I will have to keep an eye on. You are right about checking nock alignment on ALL arrows. Someone below mentioned a $10 buck an hour employee stuffing the nocks in as fast as possible, probably true. All Ravin arrows are made by an outside source but still no excuse for poor quality fletching or workmanship. I have had to re-fletch about 18 arrows so far. Bit of a PIA but I shoot a lot. The Ravin nock tool is great for installing or aligning the nocks but not for removing or turning off the lighted ones. I like your hose trick, will try that,thanks. Happy hunting!
Jeff, yup the arrows are from China and come with the front bushing , labels and fletchings installed. Then $11 an hr people here install the rear bushings and nocks. It's very labor intense and many QC checks involved, still some bad ones sneak through.
You know thank you for the information I have two of these Raven are 10 crossbows myself I have the camouflage version and the gunmetal blue and I do get a little where on the serving I think that comes from the cocking mechanism how it snaps on and you in a pinch point when you cock the crossbow back but as far as the cables on your crossbow maybe you had a bad set cuz I have got a archery shop at home where I live in Michigan that have sold hundreds of those crossbows and have had no problems with them it's far as cam lean or any of that and you should always check your Knox on your crossbow bolts that's why a lot of people that have crossbows that shoot Moon nocks we're having problems with their crossbows blowing up because they did not look to see if they were in line with the odd vein and they would just load the crossbow and shoot it in the string would not go into the moon knock and it would cause the crossbow to blow up I mean I'm sure when these crossbow Bolts from Raven or being put together they probably got somebody in there working for minimum wage that are just putting the Knox in as quick as they are coming out of production and you are right because I have a lighted Ravin arrows myself and they are hard to get shut off but you can buy a special tool that 10-point makes that removes arrows out of targets that are rubber coated and you can grab ahold of the knock and shake it and it'll shut it off for about $15 and you will not damage your knock and Raven also gives you a knocking tool that you can use to straighten your knock and help you put it in the arrow but besides having a little serving Ware I have not had any problems with mine they shoot really good and I also shoot well I am sighted mine out to 50 yards and I use the limbsaver dampeners for the limbs and it does not affect my accuracy I just lose 3 feet per second
Just a update. Mine did end up with a defective cam that ruined the cables. Ravin sent me new cams and strings, I installed them and the problem was fixed

Looks like it's a Sub-1 for this guy. Good video and very informative. Mission has lifetime warranty and you don't have to buy their special bolts. Still the Ravin is one sweet shootin' bow. I shot it and the Sub-1 back to back. I agree with ya that the Mission is a little cumbersome to draw back.

Only 1 had the string issue from a defective cam. My gray one got 2 years and near 400 shots..After I did a cam and string replacement on the camo one it was good for 2 years and a few hundred shots as well
Barnett also has issues with their Cables due to not having a cable slide. I bought a Whitetail Pro STR shot it roughly 30 times and the cable is breaking apart. Customer support at Barnett lacks big time. They were not even willing to replace the cable. What they told me: "We do not do refunds or returns, bring it back to the store you bought it from." That came from their customer support but, only after a combined total of about 2 hrs. on hold over multiple days. They also do not respond to email. It sounds like Ravin has much better support. @@johngarnergarner6724 I shot the Raptor FX3 Pro for awhile and now the Predator 430. All great bows. Did have some issues with strings as well. I wanted better quality so I went with ViperX and 60x strings/cables. You'll love them.
I have always used Ravin Strings and I am lucky to get 1 season or 200 shots out of them. I have a set of GAS strings to try, but I have no feedback on them as of now.
If you guys are buying the lighted Nok and go to remove the plastic shipping peice I would suggest backing the neck out a bit further to remove with no issue then engage nock until light and then turn off. If you are having issue with the nok coming on in your quiver that means you do not have nok backed out far enough. Guys these nocks can be removed if need be and contacts can be checked as well as battery can be replaced.
I'm curious as to why the limb Vibration Dampeners affected your 50 yard shots? Also, is there such a thing as "the most perfect crossbow" that won't have problems? Every crossbow I research there's problems that happen; Ten Point, Excalibur, CenterPoint, Killer Instinct, Mission, etc etc. I read about problems either cracked limbs, serving string separation, AccuDraw problems, it's all there. There is no perfect crossbow that is problem free. I wish there was especially for the money a person spends on them as I just did with my Raven R10. I which all crossbows came with gas strings & cables! Not sure if you have looked into SEVR broadheads but they actually fly better than the swhackers which I love by the way, but SEVR makes a 150 grain Robusto 2in cut that can be used for target practice by tightening down an allen screw, great concept. They also have 100 and 125 grain and you can purchase one at a time if you want.
I know nothing is perfect..I have no idea why the dampners affected my accuracy. I have a 4 year old Ten Point viper s400..That thing has not given me one issue..Strings are still stock with probably 600 shots on them, but they do need replaced. The only issue with those is their lighted bolts used to lose the nock when you hit a animal, but they fixed that last year with a re design..I still have both R10s..I am lucky to get 200 shots on stock strings..When It comes time to replace them, ten point viper s440's will be my choice..They seriously just build a better product, and I hear Ravin's customer service is straight crap anymore.
the lighted nocks are garbage! Shot two deer and neither lit and lost one arrow and deer as result! And other one turned on just when I set my packs down on the ground - they are junk DON'T buy them!!! My Dead Ringer 2 blade have been flawless on 1/2 dozen deer; but hate the Swackers. I love my Ravin though.
Sounds like you're just unlucky. I've had this exact same Ravin for 8 months and it still performs like new. And I have 6 lighted nocks that have been fired about 20 x each and they work as advertised.
Not unlucky, I have 2. One has had zero issues over 2 years and 100s of shots. The one that did have issues, they sent the parts and I fixed it, and has been just fine. At the end of the video, I ultimately recommended the bows..Did you watch the whole video?
A good review. The string thing is not unexpected, in my opinion, due to the acute string angles and velocity. I hope they get it straightened out and suspect they will. I may buy one but am interested too in what is revealed at the shot show. Plus, I shoot the snot out of my MXB-400 and it's performing flawlessly with custom arrows. @@cmack003 , I work at Ravin and almost every component is made in China! We install the bushings and nocks on the Chinese arrows and assemble and test the bows, but all that's made here in Wisconsin are the risers and flt. grooves. Amazing they can be called "Made In USA".
I understand your concerns, however most of what you're describing with the bolts is not relevant. Nocks are to be aligned prior to shooting. I am positive factory made bolt nocks can and will move. They should be verified after each shooting session. Lighted nocks are not designed to pass through deer and still expected to work. Expecting broad heads to be like new after a kill is a little delusional especially on an expandable .If they do , that is a bonus. As far as your bows , strings are made to be replaced, cam lean will be affected after replacing strings. The bolt may have dirt inside of your wife's bow. I really do not think you have big issues with Raven Crossbows. I hear a lot of opinion and complaining in your post , not manufacturing issues or defects.
You seriously did not watch the whole video, or if so, you did not comprehend everything. I reviewed at a level that covered one extreme to another, both good and bad. I don't expect broadheads to be reused, however I have 2 other lighted bolts that havs passed through 4 deer and still work, so it is note worthy to mention the failure. Lastly, you failed to hear the fact, that the camo model had a cam issue out of the box, but I fixed and still praised the bow at the end of the video..
Wanted to comment after seeing the "Made In USA" and "flag" decal on the bows. They are not made in the USA!! They are designed and assembled here, with mostly Chinese parts. Same with the arrows, the arrows are inspected, they get the bushing and nocks installed here. A lot of hand labor goes into this stuff, but even the top model at $2,600 is not truly U.S. made.
unfortunately, if we boycotted everything made in China these days, most of us would be sitting in straw hut wearing leaves for underwear buddy...Sad, but true..

I believe Firenock makes lighted nicks for these.

I have the Barnett Whitetail Hunter Pro---and , by the way, love the bow. But I've also had issues with the cables fraying prematurely

Not unlucky, I have 2. One has had zero issues over 2 years and 100s of shots. The one that did have issues, they sent the parts and I fixed it, and has been just fine. At the end of the video, I ultimately recommended the bows..Did you watch the whole video?

Your strings/cables look very dry. Are you using serving oil?
I do.Those strings were only a few weeks old..The bow was new with maybe 40 shots on it. A defective cam was cutting the cables

Yes they sent me both cams and another string set. Fixed the problems

A good review. The string thing is not unexpected, in my opinion, due to the acute string angles and velocity. I hope they get it straightened out and suspect they will. I may buy one but am interested too in what is revealed at the shot show. Plus, I shoot the snot out of my MXB-400 and it's performing flawlessly with custom arrows.

@@cmack003 , I work at Ravin and almost every component is made in China! We install the bushings and nocks on the Chinese arrows and assemble and test the bows, but all that's made here in Wisconsin are the risers and flt. grooves. Amazing they can be called "Made In USA".

Inspecting a nock is common sense.
I understand your concerns, however most of what you're describing with the bolts is not relevant. Nocks are to be aligned prior to shooting. I am positive factory made bolt nocks can and will move. They should be verified after each shooting session. Lighted nocks are not designed to pass through deer and still expected to work. Expecting broad heads to be like new after a kill is a little delusional especially on an expandable .If they do , that is a bonus. As far as your bows , strings are made to be replaced, cam lean will be affected after replacing strings. The bolt may have dirt inside of your wife's bow. I really do not think you have big issues with Raven Crossbows. I hear a lot of opinion and complaining in your post , not manufacturing issues or defects.
You seriously did not watch the whole video, or if so, you did not comprehend everything. I reviewed at a level that covered one extreme to another, both good and bad.
I don't expect broadheads to be reused, however I have 2 other lighted bolts that havs passed through 4 deer and still work, so it is note worthy to mention the failure. Lastly, you failed to hear the fact, that the camo model had a cam issue out of the box, but I fixed and still praised the bow at the end of the video..
The arrows are factory mass produced. I'm not an expert but if it was made in china I wouldn't expect much quality.

Wanted to comment after seeing the "Made In USA" and "flag" decal on the bows. They are not made in the USA!! They are designed and assembled here, with mostly Chinese parts. Same with the arrows, the arrows are inspected, they get the bushing and nocks installed here. A lot of hand labor goes into this stuff, but even the top model at $2,600 is not truly U.S. made.
unfortunately, if we boycotted everything made in China these days, most of us would be sitting in straw hut wearing leaves for underwear buddy...Sad, but true..

i would never pay that bullshit price for a arrow, when my Daniel defense which cost just as much sends a bullet at 2700 feet per second. Go with CenterPoint who bought this bullshit company that sells for 4 times less. LOL
