  • Smart trainers are effectively computers that have to dissipate a LOT of energy, so sometimes things don't go as expected. After a slight panic, a support ticket, and a few days, all is well again with my Tacx Neo. Today I take you through the initial issue through to the resolution. All up it was around 15-20 minutes.

    Same problem with a different source...check your Free Hub! With about 4,500 kilometers of use I got the same noise and followed the process including sending video/audio clip to tech support. They concurred and sent the removal tool at no cost. I removed the flywheel and while I didn't find anything that seemed to be causing the problem I cleaned it well, lubed the hub, and reassembled. The noise was gone. For a little while. When it returned I once again began to pull the flywheel but got no further than the free hub which was completely fried. The inner race came out in pieces spilling badly worn bearings on the floor. The bottom line is that I was initially so focused on the novelty of a problem internal to the trainer that I didn't closely inspect the free hub in the first place. I might have caught it the first time around. Apparently the noise/vibration travels on the axel spindle to the flywheel and creates a noise identical to foreign material inside. Garmin sent a new free hub at no cost. Problem solved.

    Great video. Just got a 2T and had the same problem. Solution was the same - extra the flywheel, didn't see any particles but did see slight scoring on a few of the magnets, reinstalled the flywheel and voila!

    Just got my Neo and it had the noise right out of the box. Quite a shame with such a high priced product, let's see how fast the customer service will hook me up with a tool. Thanks for the video, I watched it even before buying a Neo and it probably saved me a lot of anger figuring out the problem and how to solve it!

    Shane, I just bought the Neo yesterday & only set it up tonight. Took a bit of time to setup & update the firmware. After I put the cassette in the first time, I thought of your video & decided to check the bolts holding the plate in place. Good thing I did check because one was very loose and is about the same level as the center plate. When its tight, the top edge of the bolt should be half way down the height of the center plate. Another was just a bit loose & the rest were tight. I have a picture of the bolts but I can't attach it here. Also, one of the bolts on the other side was also loose. So, for anyone who just got their Neo, check the bolts on both sides on the metal plate. I've only did a short Zwift test & it seems to be working fine. I'll do a workout tomorrow & see how it goes 😁 (Hills is going to be painful now coming from a fluid 'dumb turbo' trainer 😖)

      Crikey! That's worth shooting the link to Tacx Support just as a heads up (include your Neo serial # and place of purchase). They should be able to follow up the QC on that unit.

    • @gplama

      New out of the box I'd boot it back out the door for sure. The Neo is an interesting beast, as the flywheel is pretty light on and won't shake like other trainers with much larger flywheels (should they become unbalanced). Let's see how this holds up in the coming weeks/months.

    I've heard that same sound from a small electric motor that I used to have. its just the rotor contacting the stater. In the case of the motor, the sound was caused by an impact on the driveshaft, so my guess is that the "flywheel" (whats the technical term) received a knock at some point.

    Mine is making the same grinding sound. It is not constant, actually was more pronounced after just arriving, but it is still there. I might buy this tool and give it a try as well. I also had a hard time to get 11 speed shimano noiseless, it seemed at first that something was missalinged or even crooked.

    Great video, although I'd rather not have to service a £1000 trainer after a few months. I know you're a high mileage rider, but most of us would hope to get years of use rather than worrying when it's going to break/need service.
    Great to see the inside and how the magnets/flywheel are arranged.
    That said, I wouldn't have been able to hear that noise in my Kickr.....It's only because the Neo is so quiet!

    • @gplama
      @gplama  6 років тому

      That really depends on the rider and usage. The Neo I've covered the other week has 53,000km on it. I've had a Kickr break a belt at 10,000km. Others have had Kickrs clocking up over 20,000km with no dramas.

    At minute 4:55 - where exactly do you put grease on it, on the inner spindel too? Does the grease also belong on the place where the ball bearing is located? Is it even grease or is it something else?

    Shane, thanks for these great videos. I have got a Neo nearly a month ago and right from the beginning I was feeling light vibrations/rumbling at certain low cadence & wattage (~60rpm/100W). I was wondering if you have experienced a similar issue or seen a solution for this somewhere? On some blogs I read that changing the gear set could help, but not much difference for me.

    • @gplama
      @gplama  6 років тому

      The way in which the unit is designed with the magnets you may feel a little vibration at super low speeds/watts. I'd have to jump on mine and replicate it... and know exactly what you're experiencing. If it's a concern then get a quick video of it and explain how to replicate it over to Tacx Support.

  • @strouja

    Shane great video and thanks. Can you post the name of similar name of the gadget you used to clean your cassette? I do it by hand and it gets very messy and would like to use a gadget similar to what you used. Thanks again and I'll try and do the recommended maintenance tonight for the 1st time as I had mine well over 2 years and it is making an odd noise at certain cadences and load. I hope I don't need to take it apart like you did with the special tacx tool (I opened a support case with them last night and showed them my video of the noise I have - not as bad as your noise) and that taking the hub off, cleaning and lubing it will resolve. Thanks again

      Same here. Just got one last week and finally put on a cassette and bike. It's making this noise without having pedaled once :(. At least it looks like no big issue, but shouldn't be there on a brand new one.

  • @886014
    @886014 7 років тому +8

    I think if it happens again just try changing the torque on the securing bolts, they may have been pulling it out of square.
    Another thing to check would be the condition of the bearing. A lot of OEMs insist on using the cheapest, crappiest bearings available to save some money.

  • @davelittlewood195
    @davelittlewood195 Рік тому

    Hello there. I don't get the grinding nose like you had but I do get some very bad vibrations through the pedals.
    Looking at the plate spinning once you'd re-assembled it, I'm very surprised but the level of the radial run out on the plate. It's quite bad and made me think I need to pull the plate off on mine!

    Hi Shane. From an energy point of view, where does the power generated by the user goes in the Tacx Neo. Is it burnt in a resistor? I know the Tacx Flux Smart is an eddy currents brake -one of the reasons it does not have the descent simulation because unlike the Neo, it can't work as a motor.
    Do you know any smart trainer of any brand that regens to the grid?

    • @gplama
      @gplama  6 років тому +1

      That's a damn good question. Tacx direct would be the best to give an answer on that. Tacx also have an older model trainer that returns power to the grid. There was mention of it on Zwift Riders Facebook group a week or so ago.

    Thanks Shane. This is such a helpful video. What did impress me the most though, was the speed at which you were able to remove and install the cassette. I'm running Ultegra on the Neo and it's very tight. I find I have to take it out and install it piece by piece. How do you do yours so efficiently?

    So it’s the a trainer’s version of “ sir, did you try unplugging it for 30 seconds and plugging it back in?” . My guess is that the main nut lost a little tightness/torque and allowed for just enough wobbling to cause the noise.

    READ THIS BEFORE YOU ATTEMPT TO OPEN YOUR NEO
    This video was very helpful. What's interesting to know is that the flywheel rests on the bearings but is only maintained sideways by the neodymium magnets! Their force is what you need to overcome by using the tool.
    The 6 screws that are apparent on the flywheel are used to fix the big bearing to the flywheel. They are not what keeps the flywheel to the base of the neo. FOR THE LOVE OF YOUR CYCLING GOD DO NOT UNSCREW the 6 screws! Leave 3 of them attached as Shane did in the video! If you unscrew the 6, the big bearing will come loose and will need to be re-fixed to the flywheel. If the big bearing is not exactly aligned to the flywheel, it can cause the flywheel to be ever so slightly tilted, which will cause rubbing because of the tight tolerances.
    HOWEVER, if you have an unexplained persistant rubbing, it might be because the big bearing and the flywheel are not perfectly aligned anymore, and in that case it could be a good idea to unscrew the 6 screws and re-align the big bearings to the flywheel.

    Thank you so much for doing the video on this problem with the NEO. Do you think Tacx will update the NEO (like NEO 2.0) for fall 2017/spring 2018? If TACX doesn't release some sort of new and improved/fixed version of the NEO, I'm not buying one. I will not a buy a trainer I know I will have to fix in the future that will require a "plate extractor" to get the problem fixed.

    Sometimes you just take something apart and put it back together and it works right again. This has happened with many a Bottom bracket of mine... I'll hear a weird noise or something and then I'll take it all apart looking for the problem and never find it, give up, put it all back together and somehow there's no longer a sound.

I only want to use mostly during winter when it gets dark earlier and when it's wet in summer. I watched your video after having this exact issue, I have repeated the process completely 4 times now & still can’t get rid of noise. What are your thoughts on what else I can possibly do.
    When I opened up the Tacx NEO there is no marks at all that I can find on either the outer pads & or the magnets.
    I have also cleaned everything, re-greased as well… I get the noise when spinning with my hand as per your video & when cycling.

    • @realsstates1180
      @realsstates1180 4 роки тому +2

      I don’t have one of these but if you want to put a little time into this, you can put marks on the outside wheel magnets using non-permanent markers for example and hand spin it. The contacts will cause the marker to transfer. You can then see where the magnets are making contact and making the noise.

      I guess we have to recognise that four months is a long time to go without a satisfactory resolution and we should then spend our money accordingly. Sad because Tacx seemed to respond pretty well initially but now seem to be happy to take the reputational risk of not resolving this for you in a timely way.

    Nice Video Shane. I'm dying to take my Neo apart but mine is working perfectly so I can't find a good reason to get in there... yet.. :-P Also, any autoparts supply store will sell bearing puller sets.. If you can't get a hold of this original Tacx unit any generic type puller will work just fine.

    • @gplama
      @gplama  7 років тому +2

      DON'T TOUCH IT! ;) This isn't a bearing puller as such, it's just a mechanism to pull the freehub shell thing away from the magnets neatly. I reckon there'd be a way to hack up a similar part to do the same job. Hopefully nobody will need to go down that avenue.

    • @pauldamian2988
      @pauldamian2988 7 років тому

      Caution obviously... The Taxc tool is a single purpose puller. I think Kerry was referring to a universal bolt style wheel puller, like this: store.snapon.com/Bolt-Grip-Puller-Sets-Set-Puller-Bolt-Grip-1-1-4-mdash-3-13-16-includes-storage-case--P635337.aspx NOT a bearing puller specifically. When I watched the video I immediately thought of this puller set in my tool box. All that said, please remember I do not have a Neo, nor have I ever used this puller set to work on one...

    Today, I just opened my tacx neo 2t that I received this last tuesday from Planet Cyclery (11/12/2019) and a grinding noise is coming from inside the trainer when you turn the free wheel plate. You can not imagine how upset I’m right now. It sounds like something is loose or broken inside. This is a BRAND NEW ITEM and I didn’t even have a chance to put the bike on it.
    WHO CHECKS THE TRAINER BEFORE PACKING THE ITEM? HOW CAN SOMEONE LET THIS HAPPENING OR NOT NOTICING IT? THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE!
    I immediately searched online and it took me 5 seconds to find you Shane with this exact same issue. However mine is “supposed" to be brand new with no miles on it.
    Please guys, make sur nobody else is posting the same related problem and start looking for an another trainer until this issue is fixed directly from the manufacturer. I'm not here to waste my money and time waiting for a plate extractor and do the job myself on a brand new item. This is RIDICULOUS!

      That's not optimal. If you purchased locally, I'd take it back for a swap. If it was broken stock then it shouldn't be up to you to fix that.

    I think mine needs a service like this. On descents in Zwift mine makes a pretty epic "Wooooo" noise (technical term) which seems to be magnified as the freewheeling simulation gets faster. However I'd be worried about taking the plate off and *really* screwing things up. Do you reckon Tacx would send me the tool if I asked? I know you've got mad connections!

      thanks Shane but are they strong magnets? from tacx i recieved a awnser To prevent problems from occurring there are strict requirements for products to comply with.
      Our products are all tested and meet all international requirements.
      The requirements for products like the Neo are much stricter than those for example phones or WiFi equipment.
      The protocols used by us ANT + and BT smart are very low energy levels.
      Strong magnets have no effect on an ICD. The frequency on the coils may cause a malfunction, but these meet the emission requirements and are placed within a steel rotor which incorporates electromagnetic radiation.
      Our belief is that an ICD can not be affected in any way by our products but this guy is afraid now because Thursday my icd was working 3 times whit a shock no ritme disturbing but high hf i don,t now it anymore maybey it is the wetter hot etc etc but thanks shane i like the things from you here on UA-cam bye

      2. I don't have a subscription to CVT, so I'm not sure. There's a few options here to look into.
      3. Hmm..... depends on your bike I guess. The Neo isn't too bad getting a bike on or off, the Kickr has a lower profile assembly which makes it a breeze to get on and off. Maybe check out a Neo at a local shop so you know what you're in for.
