I normally hate these kinds of videos because most knife defense that people present is either flawed or fantasy. I really appreciated both instructors in this video. They were both good instructors, and both gave key details to make these types of techniques work. Excellent work gentlemen.

This was an excellent exploration of self-defense in general and in particular against knives. I had the benefit of some training in adolescence and is in the military with martial arts. Working with a personal security detachment mindset helped me to put priority on cognitive ability under stress. Recently I was attacked on the street and my initial instinct was to go for my knife but I decided to go for a very bright flashlight. In a moment of stress, I decided against going for excessive force and used something non-violent to deter my attacker. I blinded him continuously for three blocks while he chased me, but eventually he gave up. This same sort of cognitive ability used to decide for the flashlight can be used to gain better position and remove the base and stability of the attacker selectively. It's a difficult discipline but worth developing.

I love this topic, I had a guy come at me with a knife years ago outside a bar. I had enough distance to side Kick him and run away. If he was closer or more aggressive I probably would have got stabbed. Shit happens so fast. I probably would say really practice with a rubber knife for real or a red marker. You will know if your technique is effective and Don’t lie to yourself.

In ARNIS/KALI (FILIPINO MARTIAL ARTS, FMA) and PENCAK SILAT, we are taught here in Southeast Asia, i am writing from the Philippines, the best defense against a knife is to also have a knife, preferably a longer one, or to arm oneself with a stick, a baton, an umbrella or a handgun!
Almost all the defenses you have shown especially the first one will have you cut, stabbed, poked...and maybe dead!

The drawn arc at the 16 minute mark is really good. Knife fighting is all about the angles, it's very interesting from a bio-mechanic pov. It really shows the importance of movement and stepping, be anywhere except on that arc.

So for the thrust it seems as if the timing and possibly distance a see predicated on the thrust remaining out there longer there realistic ( which is typical of traditional MA disciplines which I am a part) to pull off the technique depicted. Block with back fist to face to prevent quick retraction??😎

44.45-46.21 time spot, is also akin to modified shionage technique. I missed this video upload for some reason until recently it came up on the right side panel. thanks for your great works!

At 26:42 , the instructor mentioned that he teaches knife-tapping palm down because he is "safe either way" if the knife is pulled back, and palm up might result in arteries getting cut if the attacker pulls back on reverse grip.
Most of the techniques in this vid are super legit and very similar to what i was taught, but this is the exact opposite of what was it taught and was shown to me directly by Tuhon Apolo Ladra, who teaches the PTK system this instructor seems to be drawing from. It is extremely easy and very likely to be cut if the knife is oriented up and the palm is down - whether the block slips and the attack continues through OR if the attacker pulls back.
This is NOT the case if the blade is oriented down and the palm is up, especially because a blade being carried in a street attack is unlikely to have an edge on the reverse side like that, and because proper cross-hand knife-tapping pushes the arm into the hip.
Otherwise pretty great vid, but very strange that the instructor demonstrates that technique with one of the first mistakes that PTK addresses.
Who was his instructor? Maybe they had some other rationale that wasn't mentioned.

2nd guy - block stabbing arm is secondary to kicking the attacker in the nuts, or if available, sink both thumbs all the way into the attackers eye sockets, then immediately attack whatever open target on the attacker that will cause his brain to fail by causing structural damage, stomp ankle to break it, or step thru him w your forearm to his clavicle to cause breathing distress resulting in death in a very few seconds. Kneeing the the diaphragm is extremely difficult - silly
You don’t have to worry about the knife if the attacker is laying on the ground gasping for breath. See eminent attack, you attack 1st, you are the attacker, not a victim.
The 3rd one - all the silly dancing will result in your death, that guy needs to watch the 1st dude to acquaint himself w reality.
Next back to silly “Jujitsu” dancing - result you B dead

In certain situations, you will need good empty hand skills to be able to pull your gun out. Also, during the gun draw, how do you stop someone from wrestling the gun away from you.--Keep in mind, persons trained in using a firearm, have had their gun, wrestled away from them. In response to this a lot of Sheriff/Police Departments, are now teaching "Gun Retention Skills".

25:25 does not seem at all realistic. A knife aggressor will go in, a dud slash will not continue to 3 or 9 oclock it will remain at about dead center.

Sorry but this not how knife attacks even look like in reality, its hundret times more violent, faster i train BJJ, love BJJ.. go watch Kalah system, you need to train full speed and strenght, not just pretend like you stabbing someone, if someone is gonna try stab you, also can caught you by surprise, you gonna just get stabbed or slashed, lets face the reality. You gonna learn nothing to defend againts knife attack, until you put yourself to stress and more real situation and then try to defend agains pressure, agression with the blade.. you gonna at least increase the chance of Survivability.

3:21 Yes martial arts takes a life time to master like mastering different Languages if you want to be a Linguist. The moves you will do is just second nature for you, easy to do and natural because of the amount of time you put into practice. You have to continue training but you do not need to keep doing the same moves for 3 to 4 decades for you to master the moves.
3:30 5 years of Martial Arts will get you no where? TEN YEARS IS SIMPLY KINDERGARTEN? TWENTY FIVE YEARS YOU START COLLEGE? And you may have a chance to understand what martial arts is all about? THESE ARE THE WORDS OF AN INSTRUCTOR FROM A MCDOJO! WHY IS HE TALKING LIKE THIS? Because HE LIKES TO YOU HAVE YOUR MONEY! TRANSFER TO A DIFFERENT DOJO!
Let me tell you this people. If you practice for at least 1 to 4 years, You will master some moves and that is enough to defend or attack on the streets but it depends on your situation. Master takes 7 to 12 years. Just train continuously, do not practice the same mistakes, respect your master, respect people you train with, respect people around you and you should know when to take a rest because it is not always about training. Our bodies will complain if we need to rest so listen to what your body is telling you.

      Agreed.
I am by no means a "knife" fighter, but when I've done defense, I always keep distance and kept moving when I was unarmed in practice. Keeping your arm down like that will get you slashed.
Thinking "the person won't think" is bullshit. There are people out there with knives who have complete control and understanding.
Don't get close to your opponent until they overcommitted, then immediately close in and strike and try to get that arm pinned.

      Forget the arm pin
      Cause structural damage
Cause a spinal reflex to shut down the attacker s brain
Then run away when the attacker is no longer a threat
