The Elby Designs Euro Serge is a magnificent instrument. Doug Lynner is the real deal and this is just incredibly valuable as this is history in the making. Doug, Laurie, and Serge, Thank you enormously for your art, passion, and desire to create. Amazing. I finally have made the time to post this comment and say Thank you.
Thank you very much, Clifton! I have been having great fun with the EuroSerge. I use it by itself quite often now and my last album was made with it as the primary instrument. Thanks again!!
Can you do a how-to video for the "parrot" sound? Thanks for your videos! Really interesting and very helpful for demystifying the modules in my system.
Thanks for this Doug. I'm building up a u4 diy system and I'm including a ssg as well as a handful of other Serge modules. This series is great - keep up the good work!
Really great video Doug! I've been looking for some more patch-programmable modules in Eurorack, and started to discover the Serge-Euro stuff. Have a Sport Modulator on it's way, and this video will really help with some ideas.
great as usual, thank you. The SSG has two coupler outputs: one is a very hot one (red here, can go from rail to rail of the power supply, -15 to +15 pulse, that is 30V pp!) the other an attenuated version of the first (grey here, 0 to +5V) I think it wasn't mentioned.
douglynner.bandcamp.com/album/modular-tonalism I’m very proud of my new release, Modular Tonalism. I hope that you enjoy it too. It focuses on developing the pitched portion of my compositions that I have experimented with over the last 6 years or so. It gives a name to the style too! It’s available now as a download, CD or stream. Listen for free at douglynner.bandcamp.com/album/modular-tonalism
is there other modules that can do this low pass gate function well? perhaps possible with negative slew limiter? I'm new to elby and planning a rack build
Any slewing module that accepts an input (other than a trigger) could do something along the same lines but in my experience the Smooth Generator does it best by far.
In layman’s terms… The SSG is not a straight VCO, VCA, VCF, or any of the basic functions. So what is it and why would anyone need it to make musical sounding things? I hear steps but they’re not in any particular key nor do they sound musical? Sorry for the stupid question. I’m new to modular.
This is great Doug, much appreciated, but I do have some comments. I'm working on a doc to show how to do some of this with the Random*Source version, as method channing mentioned below. There are a few aspects that do not seem to work at all on the R*S version so I left those out for now, but the biggest issue I've been having is duplicating the functionality of the "Window" on the EG. I have never seen this functionality on any other Euro EG and it does limit the usefulness of your tutorial. Hopefully I'm missing something, is there another way to get this functionality?
As far as the functionality, try delaying the pulse with a module or patch that can do that. It's unfortunate that you are unable to duplicate some of these common, historic uses of the Smooth & Stepped Generators on the R*S version. They are documented on the Serge, CGS and Elby EuroSerge versions. Don't forget that you can mix brands in Euro Rack. Also, I offer private lessons if that would helpful for you.
Good Morning! I just checked it and it seems to be fine. Is it possible that the URL was on multiple lines so only partially linked? Maybe just copy the whole, rather long, link and paste it into your browser? Here is the link again: drive.google.com/folderview?id=0B8SQZjf84ktpQmxtWUZmcGx2S0U&usp=sharing
Morning! Thanks for the link.. interestingly the links look quite similar but only the new one you gave works for me: drive.google.com/folderview?id=0B8SQZjf84ktpQmxtWUZmcGx2S0U&usp=sharing&pageId=117226120378123591098&authuser=1 this old one gives a 404: drive.google.com/folderview?id=0B8SQZjf84ktpQmxtWUZmcGx2S0U&usp=sharing&authuser=1&pageId=117226120378123591098 Either way, thanks tons!

Just built a Voltron 7, this video really helped me understand the smooth and stepped, thank you so much!

I always perceived the smooth side more as a track and hold rather than a lag. All the more I enjoyed your tutorial!
The SSG is like the elephant in the Sufi story ;-)

Thanks for watching!!
so cool to see an in depth video on this module! UA-cam needed one

Learned so much from this video thank you so much!
I'm happy that it was helpful!
great content as usual!
Thank you!
Loved Faraday's comments on your patches !
Haha!
Have the r*s version and this will help me a lot - also thanks for the patch diagrams.
Yes, it works for all Serge versions old and new :-)
the r*s version got the advantage of a cycle and exp switch - saves some cables but also packed with lots of fun :)
Good mods but it's important for people to know how to achieve those things with patching too so the community skill levels remain high.
yes - basics are always important for a higher understanding :)
Thank you very much.

Very cool. Serge has such a cutting sound. What knobs are those?
I'm sorry but I don't know what the knobs are.

I forgot the STS version. These patches work there too.
Hey Doug, the patch diagram link is broken [404].

Morning!
Thanks for the link..
interestingly the links look quite similar but only the new one you gave works for me:

this old one gives a 404:

Either way, thanks tons!
I'm glad that we got the patches to you without too much trouble :-)
Thanks ! :D
Explanation of patches by another person is like watching porn instead of spooning.
