Dieses berühmte Weihnachtslied stammt aus Österreich! Joseph Mohr komponierte den Text zur Musik von Franz Xaver Gruber in dem kleinen österreichischen Dorf Oberndorf bei Salzburg an der Salzach. 1818 uraufgeführt, wurde es bald in viele Sprachen übersetzt. Es bleibt Österreichs bedeutendster Beitrag zur deutschen und Weltkultur.

It used to be "streng verboten" to sing Stille Nacht in Germany until Christmas Eve. I know we English speakers love this hymn so much we can't wait that long. Is this tradition still followed?

The German may sound funny not only because the lyrics were written over 200 years ago, around 1816, but because it was written by Austrians. The melody was also the first Christmas carol written on a guitar (every guitar student knows this). The original version in German had 6 verses, and the American translation usually has only three of these: Verses 1, 6 and 2, in that order. Most Americans never hear about God's laugh in Verse 2, which is their Verse 3.

The English translation we usually sing is not a literal translation at all. The translator (John Freeman Young - 1863) took a lot of artistic license in the translation.
