    Hi Coach Mandy...
    One technical point also I would like to share it with you...the pulling force by hand should be near the center point of mass of body (swimmer) ...if the crawling hand far away from center line of body ...this force (crawling force from hand) will produce additional torsional moment on the swimmer ...and this moment will twist the body of swimmer ...so the path of hand should be near the center line of body to avoid that...this as per principal of mechanics ...kindly share me your opinion too...

    Well, kind of...... For sure, you want your hand a bit relaxed. Some people take this to the point where their hand is so relaxed that the fingers are curled more like bird's feet when they are sitting on a branch. This is a higher drag position than 'knife hand' as it is called in martial arts. Knife hand, with fingers pointed straight ahead, is about as minimal drag position as you can make your hand. Not sure what you are talking about with the rigid cupped hand. Don't think I have ever seen that in the pool. A rigid cupped hand for entry into the water would be high drag profile. I did notice 2 things about your arm stroke/pull. One, your entry on the recover is at a pretty high angle, more vertical than horizontal. Not really sure if that makes much difference or not, though some coaches say that it will mess up your shoulders. I do have my hand at a slight vertical angle for entry. I guess this comes from feeling my hand position when doing kicking laps. Straight parallel to the water and angled slightly down is high drag position. Having your hand at 10 to 20 degrees off of parallel to the water top seems optimal for least drag position when doing kicking laps, and most of the time I use fins. The other thing I noticed, and it is some thing I am working on is that your hand/palm is angled slightly from 'ideal' position for max grip on the water. Your thumb is forward and little finger is back. I think this is a natural position for your hand to assume due to how your forearm is constructed bone wise. I discovered this with my hand out the window when driving. Try rotating your thumb back a bit and your little finger more forward a bit and see if you can feel a difference. I do prefer a slightly cupped hand for my pull, which I form after my hand has entered the water and I am starting the catch and pull. As I said in another comment, the oars on paddle boards and the racing skull row boats are all now slightly concave. Best guess is that it gives you a better 'grip' or catch on the water as you pull. For trying to figure out how much finger spread there should be, I keep them about a finger's width apart if that makes sense.

    "The freestyle should not feel like a crazy amount of work" - yeah, maybe someday I'll get there. Right now I'm stuck in the "every stroke is a fight" stage, and it sucks balls.

    Can you use this for the 50 freestyle? Just feels slower when sprinting with arms and hands that relaxed.

    My traditional problem with freestyle is endurance with breathing. I went back to bilateral recently after years of one sided breathing, it seems easier, we'll see. And kicking less, i feel i am way to nervous when I swim freestyle, i can't relax. Not the case with backstroke, or breaststroke.

      I appreciate you sharing your experience! It's great that you're actively working on improving your freestyle technique. Bilateral breathing can indeed help with endurance, and reducing excessive kicking can lead to a more efficient stroke.
      Bilateral breathing can also help calm your exhale down to a release rather than forcing the exhale, which can significantly aid in regulating your breath. This can be the key to feeling more comfortable and less out of breath. It requires a calm rhythm that can be harnessed by breathing every three strokes.
      It's interesting how different strokes evoke different feelings. Keep up the practice and remember, progress comes with time and patience. Happy swimming!

      @@SWIMVICE thank you. Some cancer related family issues and loss probably influenced my performance as well in past few years. But I really do feel like bilateral breathing doesn't gas you out. And I am trying more paced swimming with less kicking. I still feel my body works the best performing breaststroke, although even there your movement becomes hareder when you eventually get tired. Backstroke too, and not to mention butterfly.

      I'm still working on this myself, but since I learned how to do 2-beat kick that synced with the pull, I have to assume that uses less energy than continuous kick, hence feeling more relaxed. I don't have to think about the kick and can focus on the catch and pull.

    I have no problem with my hand… I relax my hand a lot. My problem is my legs… I’m kicking to hard because my leg is sinking…😩😩😩

      For sure body position is the key, and it is greatly influenced by your head position. While pulling and in between breathing, try to keep your gaze directed downward. While you are breathing, keep your head as “low” in the water as possible. It helps to “curl” your mouth toward the water’s surface to avoid inhaling water. And as you’re breathing, direct your eyes directly to the side. These tips will help prevent your legs from drifting downward, keep you in a more horizontal plane and allow your lungs to create more buoyancy. When you accomplish this, you’ll soon find that you can minimize kicking to a two to four beat kick cycle, remembering to lightly kick downward with the same side foot that you are pulling (if you’re pulling with the right arm, simultaneously kick downward with the right foot and vice versa).

      Regarding your arm position, it's a common misconception that your ear or head rests on your arm. It's actually important to maintain equal space between your head and arm on both sides. This ensures proper alignment and prevents over-rotation.

      Correct, I never said it wasn’t. You must have misinterpreted the video. Yes, the hand is below the elbow. I was referring to when the catch is lost, the elbow drops below the hand. - Coach Mandy

      @@SWIMVICE Thx for pointing that out. I did that wrong for a long time. My arms in freestyle did go like a windmill. Since this year I am very into swimming again and do things better. Gliding in freestyle is now easy.

      @@SWIMVICEMaybe it was misinterpreted at 4:36 where you put a header screen titled “relaxed hands above”, where I know you meant perspective view from above. But throughout your video, it’s pretty much implied that hand is low when you say high elbow. lol. And English is not my first language. Your video was great.
