I was always amazed not only that he could compose, memorize, and play these brilliantly complex pieces, but that he was able to teach his whole band on "Live from Here" to play a new one each week.
It's a polymeter! On the lowest string he is playing a steady quarter note pulse behind that 7/8 riff. It takes two rounds of 7/8 for the downbeats to line up again, which = one cycle of 7/4. I think that's what really smooths the rhythm out.
Once, there was Mozart. There was Hendrix, then Cobain and Matthew Bellamy. Then, there was Casey Neistat and Snarky Puppy. Now is the Era of Chris Tile. That's fantastic.
Sensationally good. The whole album. Led here by Jacob Collier's comment about his own piece "I heard you singing"- "Chris Thile is potentially the world’s best musician. I mean... the amount I have been thrilled by him for the last ten years knows no bounds... from Bach to Punch Brothers and back again. We met for the first time last year and he agreed to decorate the middle section of this with his magnificence. I almost cried the first time I heard it when he sent it over. He is just so special." Elsewhere Chris asserted that JC was music in human form. So, they are probably both right. Music, musicianship, sorrow, delight, and plain fun pour out of Thile. Fun like a rollercoaster... the audience gasps... ua-cam.com/video/wiCI6KEnh-M/v-deo.html&start_radio=1&rv=Qc3RCKTa1Ys
Yes it does. This is not a studio recording as the traffic noise in the background indicates. They brought sound baffles into this re-purposed church so they could use it as a studio, as you can see in other locations and these were probably placed behind the cameras on this occasion. This appears to be an un-soundproofed environment outside normal studio use.. I think the microphone is a Neumann U87 probably used in cardioid pattern to exclude both reflections and cut extreme low end traffic rumble and placed close to use CT's body to mask any rear reflections off the wall behind him. Unlike the multi-mike recordings done in the main body of the church this is monaural consistent with this single mike choice. Finally CT's foot shuffling at start and finish are perfectly audible and foot-synced. The audio and video are contemporaneous. Contrast with the studio performance ua-cam.com/video/jTjBrsGgkA0/v-deo.html

Chris Thile is like a good wine: he was great to start with and only got better with age ❤️😍
Friend: "what kind of music do you like?"
Me: "Um.........math folk?"

-core.
I tell people "modern acoustic" music.
it took me a while to realize the music is in 7/8. Amazing how fluent he makes he makes this meter sound.
