    I love this - Sam Bush is the master - one of the fathers of Newgrass. And I'm sure Chris Thile looked up to him as he was coming up in the tradition. What I like to see - the Elders handing it on down to the next generation . . . a legacy of continuance . . .

    It’s amazing to see the difference in technique between these two amazing artists. Regarding movement of the pick hand and fingerprint, Chris Thile is a “minimalist”:and Sam Bush can only be described as a “maximist” yet both are tight and get full projection from their efforts. A pleasure to watch and listen to.

      Um find another person on the planet that can play as well as Thile. Go ahead well wait after you do a deep dive of his work. The guy is a prodigy and was so good at 13 professional musicians were scared to play with him because they feared they would get destroyed and they would. As for Sam Bush he’s not on my mt Rushmore of mandolins but it’s not a contest. The dude is bad as they come in the bluegrass world. Both are unbelievable and Thile is from another planet.

    Me and my band at the time (bizung family ) played at the Sheraton. Up yonder way so. Pleasant a town. There are no chain restaurants or commercial banners. All the places to eat are. Good though.

    I wouldn’t exactly call this bluegrass or even new grass...it’s virtually an Irish lilt or a Newfoundland jig. But fun anyway!

    • @mrswimmyboy
      @mrswimmyboy 4 роки тому

      Its a Texas style fiddle tune. Benny Thomasson was the greatest player in that style IMO

    • @rayray8687
      @rayray8687 4 роки тому

      mrswimmyboy: This style came across the water from Scotland 150 - 200 years ago and is known as a “reel”. It landed solidly in Newfoundland and Cape Breton Island and is still a staple folk music genre in all three areas. It apparently also somehow found its way toTexas.
      But it is not bluegrass or new grass or anything like it. It’s a Scottish reel dating back hundreds of years. And yes, I agree, Mr Thomasson was very smooth at this style - very fun to listen to!

    • @mrswimmyboy
      @mrswimmyboy 4 роки тому

      @@rayray8687- I'd call Brilliancy a hornpipe. It feels Irish rather than Scottish.

    • @rayray8687
      @rayray8687 4 роки тому

      mrswimmyboy: I can’t disagree since I did mention Irish in my original comment, but the tempo seems a bit quick to qualify as the much slower traditional hornpipe. Fact is drunken Irish sailors couldn’t dance that fast, lol. Maybe Texans can, I’m not sure.

    • @peterhackman4991
      @peterhackman4991 4 роки тому

      It can be done in several ways. I recorded ths tune with a 4 piece Bluegrass band in 1969. Howdy Forrester (from whose recording I learned the tune) recorded it with Jimmy Riddle on piano around 1960.
