How Much Does Our Boondock Ready Hiatus Pop up Camper Weigh? Keeping Truck Campers Below GVWR

- Trucker camper weight remains a tricky subject. In this first episode designed for new or newer truck campers based on my 19 day, 6800 mile road trip, we show how challenging it can be to stay under allowable weight (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating - GVWR) when putting a boondock ready truck camper together.
Wow, what an interesting journey. Looking forward to watching all your videos about this trip.
Thanks Hiker Girl! Traveling across country during winter was not my best idea but worked out well and learned a lot.
I really enjoyed this video as I also owned a Ridgeline and was ready to trade it in on the new HP Ridgeline and do something similar but the local dealer wanted a 3K markup so I went over to Toyota dealer and they sold me a new Taco for MSRP. I'm also considering a similar setup for my Taco as what you've done. Subscribed.
I would love to see videos of you both living in it full time and what your experience is like in the hiatus, maybe do a pro’s and con’s one. Overall, thank you for the elaborate video !
Nice details. Hope you continue with updates.
Good review
Your videos are so complete with the details. I recently got a Ridgeline with the hopes of putting a camper on it for various hikes. Slideouts seem too much of a hassle and weight too. Making a trip to get Hiatus installed would in itself be a trip, I'm from the DMV area too :). I'm planning to start my design. Would to know what worked best and what didn't since you'd had it for a while. Also what other additions have you made since.
I believe a significant factor in calculating the max weight ratings are the tires. The stock tires are more suited for a mini van or sport ute, not a "pck up".
If you were to upgrade to an 8 ply BFG's for example, the ride will be a little rougher but it will increase your weight rating. Please let me know if this is an incorrect assumption.
I’m new sub because I like your outdoor pics and the Hiatus. Would you buy it again if choosing? (Discount the fact that Ridgeline has limited options). I’m in a Chevy 1500 with more options but I believe the Hiatus is a top tier camper.
How does the camper seal against water intrusion between the cab and the camper?
I wonder if this could fit the Hyundai Santa Cruz.
whats your mpg impact?
wonder how many of those prefab smaller campers that are sold as half ton truck friendly actually exceed the capacity of those trucks.
A lot of them especially once you add gear/water/people!
Nice... Here's hoping you get your 1000. Is there a time limit?
Thank you
Thank you!
How can I get something like that?? Could you give some information please..
Look up Hiatus Campers
New Subscriber. The number didn't change. It's still 995?
Yes YT does not seem to want to give the last few needed but we finally got 1000!
Tldw 460lbs for camper.
Sounds like you need a new truck. The GVWR for my 2021 Ram 2500 is 21,000 lbs. That Hiatus, all gear, fuel, and passengers would not even come close to 21k lbs.
Ram gets crappy gas mileage. Gas guzzler! No thanks!
@@fortyoneshades Yep! I'm finding that out the hard way.
No, the GVWR for a Ram 2500 is likely right around 10,000 lbs with a payload capacity in the 3,XXX range if you have the Hemi...much less if it's the Cummins. The 21,000 lbs number is your GCWR or the max combined weight of the truck and trailer while towing. I'm guessing you have the Hemi, since the GCWR would be higher if you had the Cummins.
@@geejay5653 You are correct. I meant to say GROSS COMBINED WEIGHT RESTRICTION. I have the 6.4 liter hemi.
