  • What's happening, people! I'm back with some more early '80s synthpop, and this time we listen to the proper medley version of Soft Cell's "Tainted Love / Where Did Our Love Go?" I reacted to both of these tunes individually on vinyl copies I have, but those records aren't in the greatest shape, and both of them were sort of weird/eccentric remixes, whereas this CD single contains the "clean" version I remember hearing on the radio as a kid. As such, join me for some foot-tapping, finger-snapping good '80s music, folks. Cheers!

Shout-out to Gloria Jones and the Supremes for the originals that inspired the Soft Cell versions (and by extension, this awesome medley).

A young Marc Almond was working the coat check when he first heard Gloria Jones's version of tainted love at a UK ' Northern Soul ' themed night at a club ... He clearly never forgot it !
' Northern soul ' was a music and dance movement that emerged in Northern England and the English Midlands in the late 1960s from the British mod scene, based on a particular style of Black American soul music, especially from the mid-1960s, with a heavy beat and fast tempo (100 bpm and above)

You’re the only one who reacted to the combination of tainted love/where did our love go. Great reaction!!

My brother bought the 7" single where Tainted Love was the A side and "Where Did Our Love Go?" was the B side. We thought it was weird that they both had that percussive sequencer , that is prominent on Tainted Love, and it wasn't until we heard the 12" that we realised they segued into each other

Thx for the details! So the full experience is from the 12 inch (now-digital) version. Awesome.

Oh hell yeah! As I mention in the video, I have a couple Soft Cell vinyl, including both "Tainted Love" and "Where Did Our Love Go?" (on separate records), but not this medley version. Wish I did!

Nice reaction, thanks... I'm an oldie 😀 so I was around at the time this came out, and the DJs in the clubs always used to play this 12" version, and the whole crowd would always clap along to that clapping part of the transition, brilliant!
Soft Cell's all-time great track is "Say Hello, Wave Goodbye" and another great one is "Torch"
PS the "weird remix" of "Where Did Our Love Go" you refer to is the one from the "Non-Stop Ecstatic Dancing" remix album... that record is worth exploring for another Northern Soul cover version, "What!"

Hey there! Cheers for the comment! That clapping for the transition between the two tracks in the medley sounds like so much fun. Can't imagine hearing this in that context, must have been brilliant!
And right on, I'm trying to acquire more Soft Cell so I can dive into their catalog more thoroughly. I'll keep those two songs in mind!
And ah, I see! I have vinyl copies of both that and the original Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret, but wasn't aware Ecstatic Dancing was a remix album of the former. Thanks for that insight!

It’s interesting indeed that they combined two songs of the same style but completely different meaning into the medley.
Somehow I never thought of that!

Nice! I have a couple of their albums on vinyl (including Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret), so I can react to some more Soft Cell, but I'll admit, I don't know their catalog (even the early stuff) particularly well.
