This is a cover of a 1964 song by the American soul singer Gloria Jones, whose original version was released as the B-side of her single "My Bad Boy's Comin' Home." The song is about a toxic relationship, with the singer realizing he's got to leave it. "I love you though you hurt me so," he sings, as he struggles to move on. The song's writer, Ed Cobb, told Blender magazine: "I had a lover for whom you could say wasn't a good individual. I tried to go into her head and write a song from her standpoint. Once the word 'tainted' had popped into my head, the song was written very quickly, probably 15 minutes." As AIDS began to spread, this song took on new meaning. Marc Almond said: "It was the first time we'd heard about this then-unnamed disease that was affecting gay men in America. It wasn't an intentional tie-in, but as the record hit the American charts, it took on this other meaning."
@@philobeddoe8342 Agreed Philo! Soft Cell's version was the 'original' to me, as I was in high school when it came out, & I had no idea it was a cover, until much later. My favorite version is Marilyn Manson"s cover, mainly because I'm a long time metalhead, & MM's version was more metal than the previous versions. ...Good to see ya in the comments Philo! 🤘😁🤪😎👍
I've never heard this version before! It's clearly the same quick tempo as Gloria Jones' original. I think they timed the finished version to a Donna Summer track, around 120bpm
New Wave suggestions; A good one would be "Black Coffee in Bed" by Squeeze. For a more weird song, I would say, "Whip It" by Devo, or perhaps "I Ran" by Flock of Seagulls.
So many people have covered this song! My favorite is from Marilyn Manson! Though it's not as good as "Sweet Dreams," but damn, when Manson covers a song, he usually makes it a banger! ...And he's made many! 25 covers/remakes of older songs, & most of them are great!
I'm marylin mason fan since I was kid. my mom inducted me to me. and my older brother and sister. sweet dreams is one of my favorites. and many others.
Check out Howard Jones "What is Love" 13mil views & "Things Can Only Get Better" 14mil views. Mid 80's techno-rock, keyboard oriented, slightly heavier & more complex than most pop music. Best way to put it is that rock stations would play this but shy away from Soft Cell. They were pretty much on the stations with Boy George & George Michael. LOL Our band played What is Love in the 80's all the time at the Al Rosa Villa (Yeah, the same stage Dimebag Daryl was shot on) and everybody loved it!

Never have I heard this version but this song was big when I was coming up. This sounds a bit rough and not as polished as the version played on the radio. I love your perspective of the song lol. Tainted love …. clap 👏🏼 code ..haha!!
The original official music video is way better. This is a remix, still good, and please don't think I'm coming at you for this, I'm not. You have great channel here 💜 Also worth a look, for a grimier feel, is Marilyn Manson's cover of this song.
For anyone who's interested, these are the facts of this song. It was written by Ed Cobb in the 60s and was originally sung by Gloria Jones (the partner of T-Rex's Marc Bolan) In the early 80s it was covered by English alternative synth-pop duo Soft Cell, and later again by Marilyn Manson and others. Soft Cell's 1981 version is the most well-known version recorded, hence the common misconception that singer-songwriter Marc Almond wrote it. Since the early 80s, it's been a dance club staple, especially the kick-ass extended version! It is NOT about either AIDS or the tragic death of Marc BOLAN! As far as the lyrics go there's no great mystery. The song is sung from the POV of a guy who's in a toxic - or "tainted" - relationship with another person who is emotionally and physically stringing them along. So although he truly loves the other person, he eventually makes the difficult decision to leave knowing that his own needs will never be met.
Not sure why you went with the demo, as opposed to the finished song, paired with The Supremes' Where Did Our Love Go? I wouldn't read into the clap thing, other than it goes with the handclaps in the song. Other Soft Cell tunes you should check out as an intro to them: Torch, Say Hello Wave Goodbye, Bedsitter, Memorabilia.
I was right with you on your theory until the last words “touch me baby” dropped! 🙃 Btw what is that background? It looks like something out of Blade Runner. Really cool!
Disco evoloed into New Wave???? That is hilarious, who told you that? New Wave came out of the Punk Movement and like other Genres that evolved out of Punk, started to include elements of different genres. This could be Disco, Pop, Glam, Funk, Jazz, Noise, Electronic Music or even Tribal Music. Punk was a fresh start with basic Rock 'n Roll, but inspired other Genres lke New Wave, Gothic, Industrial and many many others. New Wave was the more poppier sibling of Punk. Soft cell were part of the new british electronic music like Human League, BEF, OMD, Depeche Mode, Fad Gadget etc.
The audio is really bad and tinny on this one. I must admit, that never occurred to me...clap clap..lol....I don't think it is about that but well done thinking of it..lol..
Lol, curious as to why you would choose to listen to a demo? Demos are just building blocks for the final product and are usually poor quality and often horrendous. Lol.
Way back when dirt was so new there wasn't even dust yet (high school in the '70s). It was a badge of honor to get the clap!! Proved you at least got laid once!!
Just so you know Rihanna sampled this song S.O.S. that's just show you all today's music artist sampled songs from Artist from the 50's to the 90's and just to show you if it weren't the artist back then, these artists of today won't be able to be where their at...
I think you should react to their recorded version, this one is terrible, and it doesn't sound as good as the record, they don't do the CLAPPINF on the record, they use another sound that is done BY A keyboard which sounds NOTHING like clapping. PLEASE LISTEN TO THE RECORD. This just sounds like it's missing something. It doesn't do the song justice. He is NOT talking about getting "clap" from this girl. He is only clapping to take the place of the instrument they are missing that is on the record. It is just about a toxic relationship, By the way the real MUSIC VIDEO that was always on MTV, is LIKE the record and NO ONE is clapping on it.
Oh you guys should have selected the studio recording… this is a HORRIBLE mix and the tempo's a little sped-up… shame, it's a better song than this version portrays.
I love you guys, but I really hate Disco! It did not inspire new-wave! Who ever said that isn’t that bright, just saying! 🤷🏻♂️ Disco only inspired dancing! PERIOD! It ain’t rhythm&blues from the 60’s! I hated all that new wave junk. It gave way to cry-baby Rock!

🤘😁🤪😎👍
This came out in 1964 in the U.S. performed by Gloria Jones and written by an American guy called Ed Cobb. 👍
Omg, I never thought of the clap before with this song. Lmao. That fantastic
LOL I will NEVER hear this song the same way again
This was a big hit at the gay clubs in the 80s! 🙃
I think there was more than the clap going on in the 80s that people were worried about...
Disco as dance music evolved to house music (like Crystal Waters and C&C Music Factory) as opposed to new wave.
The Clap... That's Brilliant, You may be right.
INXS is a band you need to check out next. Mid to Late 80's into the 90's. Lead singer is one of the best vocalists ever but RIP
Great 80's song, new wave is a great genre.
Thank you and Tasha you look so adorable I love your reaction.
the extended version seques into Where Did Our Love Go a Supremes cover
I've never heard this version before! It's clearly the same quick tempo as Gloria Jones' original.

My dirty mind started chuckling when you said “the clap”! ROFL! Ah you gotta love the 80s! 😂
Song IS about a TOXIC relationship, not an STD/STI
😂☺️😂☺️
I didn't know Howard from "Big Bang Theory" was in Soft Cell band
We have a local band , Route 6, that plays a cover of this and kill it! I remember this from Nite Trax, a video show before MTV.
So many people have covered this song!
My favorite is from Marilyn Manson!

I agree he did a great job
Love MM covers…Personal Jesus is probably my fav
I'm marylin mason fan since I was kid. my mom inducted me to me. and my older brother and sister. sweet dreams is one of my favorites. and many others.
I don't like the Marilyn Manson cover, but there's very few rock songs I do like.

Please watch the video for the original 1964 version. It was sung by Gloria Jones.
That reminded me of you're take on Atlanta Rhythm Section - Imaginary Lover . fun stuff
I've always loved this song.

This is AMAZING
When this song came out I never thought of it as new wave. The sound was the same in many songs of the day. 😂 Clap wasn't the disease of the day!
Dang girl you're nasty....I'm 54 I never thought about that
😂😂😭
Cool new wave song, no doubt about it. It got plenty of time on the radio back then, too. Great tune.
Toxic relationship. That 👏 could mean "I'm done!" ?? Just my thoughts 🤣
😲I love that background!!👌🏾😁
Great Observation on the clap.
yeah got me thinking now too !!!
Studio version is way better. Deluxe Edition/ tainted love- where did our love go.
Adam Ant was around the same era, his biggest hit was Goody Two Shoes
Never have I heard this version but this song was big when I was coming up. This sounds a bit rough and not as polished as the version played on the radio. I love your perspective of the song lol. Tainted love …. clap 👏🏼 code ..haha!!

Dangit Tasha...I love this song...that never crossed my mind....ewwwww...thanks a lot! 🤣🤣

There are 4 versions of it. Gloria jones 64, 76, soft cell 80's, Marilyn Manson 90's
All iterations of this track are bangers.

Listening from inside a can of Campbell's tomato soup.
This is much better audio quality where Soft Cells merged the song with Where did our love go
Enjoy ua-cam.com/video/q84psZX6MbA/v-deo.html
Wise Woman….In Code….Same way as Lady GAGA….Poker Face (Bluffin With My Muffin)…..Code leads into her other song (Born This Way)

The audio is really bad and tinny on this one. I must admit, that never occurred to me...clap clap..lol....I don't think it is about that but well done thinking of it..lol..
New Romantic actually
So, that's what that band looked like.
Lol, curious as to why you would choose to listen to a demo? Demos are just building blocks for the final product and are usually poor quality and often horrendous. Lol.
It just came up on our feed
I think you need to listen to the original 1964 version of this song by Gloria Jones 👍
I agree with Tanya
I like the studio version better....the sound have more quality.
Prefer the official release,it just sounds fuller and deeper than this demo.
Just my opinion.
Well may be?
Check out the cover done by the Scorpions (ua-cam.com/video/IQV9Cpm9jLQ/v-deo.html)
Not the best version of a good song. Studio version is a lot better.
Way back when dirt was so new there wasn't even dust yet (high school in the '70s). It was a badge of honor to get the clap!! Proved you at least got laid once!!
It's very famous sole

Should have listened to the real version.
You couldn't have chosen a worse video to learn about the song.
Wrong about the clapping.
gf as succubus.
What an awful version of this. The recorded version is epic
