    Thanks for these. I was on the first electric train to pakenham in 1975. I think it was a Hitachi. My cousin was at one time ASM at packy in the late 70's

      Interesting 😊. Just a pity Victoria does not believe in electric Interurban trains. Otherwise the overhead may have remained all the way to the Latrobe Valley.

      @@tressteleg1 Yes I'll bet it's more than annoying. You'll have to take a radio and turn it up, if you're allowed.

      I doubt if radios are permitted. Even so, the driver would not play it during recordings.

    Nice one, question, I noticed the headlight brightness changing as the train approaches stations, does the driver have to lower the headlight brightness when entering a platform? You can see at 10:00 the headlights go dimmer, and at 2:25 you can see the headlights go off altogether.

    • @tressteleg1
      @tressteleg1  3 роки тому +1

      It is normal railway practice to turn off headlights when coming into stations, specially at night, presumably to avoid dazzling people about to board the train. I am not sure whether the driver normally uses headlights at night, or whether just turned them on to enhance the video.

      tressteleg1 Wow, quite a hasty reply! Thanks for that, your videos are great (even better with HD 😁)

      😊👍 As for video quality, I think more than anything else it has to do with the camera owned by the train driver. On the B and Z class, I have little choice but to use a small action camera due to people walking right past it to get on the tram. My bigger camera I will try to use more with more space on other classes. As for HD itself, I uploaded Sandringham a few days ago and the processed video came to 5 gigs! UA-cam will cut that down substantially.

    Great videos, got a couple of questions to ask what’s the red light under the green light mean and what’s the fastest those trains can go.

    • @tressteleg1

      If you are referring to the signals, green over red equals line clear, run at full permitted speed. This video should explain all the signal combinations

      The fastest speed for electric trains I think is 115 km/h which you will find on the fast run to Werribee, Sunbury, and maybe one or two other places.

      Thanks. Well I can only publish what my driver records, and he can only record the runs on his roster, so hope for the best. I was supposed to holiday in Melbourne in a few weeks but will put it off until late March. Then I will collect whatever he has for me.

    Awesome vids.
    Can someome explain why there are two home signals side by side at Berwick in this video?

    • @tressteleg1
      @tressteleg1  2 роки тому

      Note that the track is on a long right-hand curve, that the speed limit is 90 km/h here and when approaching the signals, the left one is clearly seen before the right one. There is a drivers’ committee which meets with management from time to time and if sighting of a signal is considered to be blocked by some obstruction until the train is quite close, a solution is worked out and in this case it would be the second signal to the left. It would probably not be legal to move the original signal over to that position. These signals which are duplicates of another signal nearby are called ‘Co-acting’.

    Please explain "crossing removal". I'm in the US and crossing removal means the rail line no longer in use. Is this rail line going to be discontinued or are the streets going to be closed and no traffic crossing the line? Thank you

    • @tressteleg1
      @tressteleg1  3 роки тому +1

      Not at all. We must speak different English in Australia. Melbourne is fairly flat and has a lot of level crossings which you call grade crossings. Because these delay motorists/auto drivers, bit by bit they are mostly raising the rail lines over the roads although sometimes the railway line is lowered under the road and on rare occasions the road goes over or under the railway, thus level crossing removals. So each mode of transport can operate independent of the other, hopefully pleasing users of both.
      If you look for part 1 of this video, you will see many examples of the railway raised over the road.

    • @ginny9311
      @ginny9311 3 роки тому

      @@tressteleg1 Thank you. I totally understand. Yes we generally move the roads over the railway. If there is a cut in a hill the train goes over the road. but on level crossings they just refurbish the road at the crossing. The railway owner has responsibility for keeping the crossings in good shape. Thank you again for answering. Really like your videos and am working my way through. PS I have a good friend who lives north of Sydney. We joke because we have different ways of saying the same thing.

    • @ginny9311
      @ginny9311 3 роки тому

      @@tressteleg1 I don't know if my first reply posted. But when we raise the road over a rail line we call it building an overpass. So I had never heard the term crossing removal. Thanks again

    • @tressteleg1
      @tressteleg1  3 роки тому

      Yes, local geography does help a lot. For over 50 years, the Sydney suburban railway has had no more than about five level crossings, simply because of the hilly terrain. Here the state governments own the railways and is responsible for at least the most important roads so there is no squabbling about who has to pay. We often enjoy pulling the leg of our American cousins. We hear American slang on TV and although we understand it, we don’t necessarily use it. But you never hear our slang so we can have good fun with that 😄

      Here in germany a few politicions had a deal with masks for Covid. They got about 40 million Euros in there pockets for this deal with the gouverment. None of them had resigned, but with a little bit of luck they will be in the opposition as we had a election last week.
      We had a long Lockdown here from last november until may. Now every thing is opened an all we must do is to wear a mask in shops and public transport.
