Wow wow wow, wow indeeed As a Japanese, it’s gonna be a great nightmare to have him as a prime minister of Japan. He is just saying shits with huge confidence. I’m overwhelmed with his such lies, illogical opinions….. Speechless,,, unbelievable NHK (Japanese national broadcaster) sadly doesn’t have journalism spirits…
Dear LDP, Please plase please, I sincerely request you not to make the nightmare happens. We, the Japanese people have alre been in a bad dream (I hope it’s just a dream, but it’s real sadly). I totally understand you guys, I mean Kishida, is the PM and the next PM is also one from LDP because WE (loads of stupid people) have chosen your party.
Kono is a politician who is constantly making mistakes and is disliked by many Japanese. Yet, he is considered one of the candidates for the next prime minister because of the bad system of hereditary succession that exists in Japan. Both Kishida and Abe, as well as Kono, have parents who were influential politicians.
First of all, Mr.Kono didn't seem to understand the meaning of the questions well. Around 2:00, when the interviewer asked “ back on track?”, he should have presented truths or statistics that prove the economy being back on track. It is so shameful he is one of the best English speaking ministers even this much of English. He said 'My Number Card' is successful, but it's not true. The most worrisome issue is that various fraud cases using My Number Card or stealing individual information from them is increasing. Mr.Kono's comments here are far from trustworthy.
He has no knowledge or experience about building a digital system of a specific kind. THE TRUTH THAT SUCH AN ILLEGITIMATE PERSON IS LEADING THE DIGITAL AGENCY is the biggest problem.
Japan also has its issues, but the UK often seems more concerned with other countries’ problems than its own. For example, the situation in the UK is arguably worse than in Japan for several reasons. Firstly, the most common name for newborns is now Muhammad. Additionally, the birth rate among the white population is declining, and the aging population is increasing. Furthermore, the economic situation for companies is deteriorating. In some ways, the UK and Japan face similar problems
To be honest, he is just talking gibberish. L.D.P is the worst political group existing in Japan. They are just elected due to under-the-table connections.
To English readers - the google translation here has done a bad job. This comment actually says: “Kano, you alone are an individual we CANNOT have as a prime minister”
15:35 He is saying that Japan's government will force citizens to work until old age. He is clearly not considering Japanese people's happiness. Just trying to exploit us.
hello world.look at him.this is how we are. assuming how terrible his answer is shows you the whole level of japanese society. Kono denies this interviewer's insights a lot and describes as if there's zero problem in japan. totally NO. just hope no one would misunderstand from what he says.
Stephen Sackur did his job, excellently as usual, and Taro Kono did his best to present his case as a minister of the government of Japan. I do feel that we need to have hard talk like this in the Japanese media as something of routine. In my opinion, it is the problem of the legacy media rather than the politicians themselves that Japan has come to this sad state of affairs. There is a general lack of critical assessment of the status quo, with Japanese journalists failing to put these hard but fair questions to politicians. Probably the NHK should start a program like HARDtalk.
Until about ten years ago, there were still a few journalists who criticized politics and so on. Some politicians like Shinzo Abe, however, started to blame for them. They pressured the executives of Japanese broadcasts to stop to close up the bad aspects of politics, history and society of Japan. Certainly there were some Japanese people who didn't like such a criticism, but Shinzo Abe banned it more than anyone else with an implicit way, not with saying clearly. After his death, this situation hasn't fully abolished, but it seems to have been ending. To tell the truth, I don't think his murder is a tragedy.
Too many people in media does ”忖度” in order to get personal gain. I particularly feel uncomfortable for those commentators who are "芸能人” or ”御用学者” trying to influence Japanese public in favour of current government. This kind of behaviour has further deteriorate quality of Japanese media. It is very sad.
BBC, you should directly interview Japanese citizens about their opinions on the My Number Card system. I'm sure you'll find some interesting opinions. He's a "bright spark" in a bad way.
Questions are superficial, answers are even more superficial. And although this is an interview by BBC News, I suppose this interview will never draw attention of internatiional audience.
Most LDP politicians have two faces showing different their attitudes therefore current government is taking exactly the same. For example my case, my X(twitter) account has been banned by order of the government. They don’t want to see or hear about criticism from citizens of Japan.
Kono repeatedly responds with “you don’t have to worry about it” with extremely weak or sometimes self-contradictory arguments. He doesn’t seem to know the truth behind our horribly corrupt political and economic structures. Japan would have been far better off if we had the media with this sense of critical and balanced thinking to face what is and isn’t just in our society. I admire BBC in that regard. We can’t leave it as a joke or parody of some sort but I felt as if I was watching a horror movie which depicts some androids with no compassion whatsoever ruling the world. Or worse yet, elementary schoolers running a country having fun without realizing the unamendable harm they are causing. Anyway I am speechless 😢
It is time for citizens to start voting for values instead of political ideologies and bring an end to religious persecution. Young citizens are now using resignation agencies to quit their jobs, indicating a looming problem in the workforce that needs to be addressed.
As a Japanese, I’m so shocked that he is taking only about the problem superficially,,,. What is the most significant in Japanese politics is that we can’t choose our own prime minister cuz there’s no election which decides next PM by the citizens,,,.
He is not answering any of the questions from the facilitator. Especially Japan market is just shrinking and just wasted of decades. No more shrinking is acceptable. It means current Japanese government haven’t worked at all so far.
Liberal Democrats are rotten milk that has been left alone for 20 years. The people are having a stomach ache, the main opposition parties point this out, then they were forced to drink out, and they choose to cozy up to the ruling party and the business. In addition, the lack of a change of government and the use of the constituency system and the deposit money system have made it impossible for anyone other than hereditary Diet members to be elected. This situation will not be resolved unless there will be a violent revolution like the French Revolution.
Watching from California, I especially like BBC's HARDtalk. So, I've never heard of Taro Kono, nor ever heard him speak. I'm not agreeing necessarily with some comments below, but it seems to me this fellow is skating around the answers to many questions. Maybe his grasp of American/British English is inhibiting. No matter. Just my opinion. But always good information.
What’s important is not what language he is speaking but what he says in it. Unfortunately Speaking English is the only end for him, not the means to come across his idea.
It is rare to see he talks back. He usually evades the critical questions from opposition or journalist by saying “ it is not my job”, “it’s out of my jurisdiction” or “Your question is irreverent” . For his arrogance, few Japanese trust him and regard him as the last person to be a PM.
He said nothing at all. "Birthrate and AI"????? Its sound like "It's not bad that people die and aren't born anymore. Let's replace them with AI." "AI do not pay taxes" - I laughed With all due respect, since it's not my country to give an opinion, but is this gentleman really an important politician? He doesn't seem to be saying anything
not for long the way japan is going…germany already passed japan economy and is 3rd (the minister was lying…you can check World Bank or IMF that japan is 4th largest economy now) and in 2025 or 2026 india also will pass japan…after that the UK around 2030-2035 will pass japan as well so japan will become number 6 economy relatively soon…
Wow wow wow, wow indeeed

nobody has been “nominated” for the next prime ministership. there’s no such system.
I wish citizens wake up and vote for values and not political ideologies.

This politician’s attitude shows why Japanese economy is on the decline.

To be honest, he is just talking gibberish. L.D.P is the worst political group existing in
Japan. They are just elected due to under-the-table connections.

Japan has no journalist like Steve .
Tahara & Steve totally different too much .

He's a "bright spark" in a bad way.
He said he was recommending, but enforcing. but the elimination of all previous systems. He is more evil than God, not to mention all demons.
He is a big talker. However, that's just it.
It's wonderful if he was just a big talker. He is a terrible liar.😱
He is Japanese comedian.
He did not know what he said😂😂
I dislike his politics.
Taro Kono is loopy.
I wish we had a guy like this who can interview straightforwardly and critically.
I'm japanese. He lies like a rug without any remorse or hesitation.
Questions are superficial, answers are even more superficial. And although this is an interview by BBC News, I suppose this interview will never draw attention of internatiional audience.

Kono says a lot but without a lot of information, typical diplomatic language.
He is known as a liar among Japanese people.
He doesn't listen to others because he believes he is always right.
Kono repeatedly responds with “you don’t have to worry about it” with extremely weak or sometimes self-contradictory arguments. He doesn’t seem to know the truth behind our horribly corrupt political and economic structures.

This guy just seems to be attacking other countries as a way to deflect from answering the questions.
It is time for citizens to start voting for values instead of political ideologies and bring an end to religious persecution. Young citizens are now using resignation agencies to quit their jobs, indicating a looming problem in the workforce that needs to be addressed.
Those in foreign countries now know why Japan has been struggling given diligent, disciplined, and smart ordinary citizens.
As a Japanese, I’m so shocked that he is taking only about the problem superficially,,,. What is the most significant in Japanese politics is that we can’t choose our own prime minister cuz there’s no election which decides next PM by the citizens,,,.

At the very beginning, Mr. Kono said “LDP has been chosen by the government.” =
US goverment
Now he wants to be a PM, of course he is willing to answer any questions.
Kono is a liar.

he is a great liar. Nobody wants him. please expose his lies.
He threw a bunch of straw man argument.Ironically he couldn’t escape from the follow up Q…

Poor show. Only an Japanese English speaker is saying something vague and lies. We've never trusted him.
no genuine zingers whatsoever, kona, just resign
British economy is worse than Japanese. What a joke. 😂😂

This newscaster's voice is similar to his.
Taro speaks English very naturally. There’s few persons who can speak English very well in Japanese political world.
Wtf is this comment. There’s no substance in what he says
Really superficial super English skills😂
There are some nasty words in the comment section,
but poll shows Taro Kono is one of the most popular politician in Japan
The poll never got it right. Indeed, if he is so popular in Japan, how come he hasn’t been a PM even once?
Are you serious?
