Australians spend millions on solar panels and batteries for their homes every year, subsidised by federal and state governments. But imagine if Australia’s blueprint for the energy transition treated all those solar panels and home batteries as completely free? That is exactly what’s happening under the hood of Australia’s energy transition plan. Watch the video to find out how the official modelling hides $360 billion in rooftop solar and home battery costs that consumers will have to pay.

All solar and battery cost estimates are sourced from CSIRO’s GenCost 2023-24 Consultation Draft.
Calculations for utility-scale storage and solar:
Shallow Storage: Average of 1-2 hour battery prices = (1009 + 731)/2 = $870/kWh
$870/kWh x 8 GWh = $7 billion
Medium Storage: Average of 4, 8 and 12 hour battery prices = (592 + 519 + 478)/3 = $530/kWh
$530/kWh x 28 GWh = $15 billion
Deep Storage: 24 hour battery price = $427/kWh
$427/kWh x 51 GWh = $22 billion
Utility-scale batteries total: $7 billion + $15 billion + $22 billion = $44 billion
Utility-scale solar: $1526/kW x 55 GW = $84 billion
Total = $44 billion + $84 billion = $128 billion”

Do you think Australia will generate cheap, clean and reliable energy in the near future? Why/why not?
Only if they end the farcical moratorium on nuclear power, wind and solar are completely incapable of providing even one out of the three listed.
Over-reliance on variable renewable energy is likely to be staggeringly expensive and regressive on the working class. All this to achieve mediocre decarbonisation as per Germany, California, etc.
It will never be cheap because it has to be completely rebuilt every 15years or so as they wear out and have to be replaced.

They are assuming that electricity will be so ridiculously expensive that you'll happily pay for solar panels and willingly use your EV battery to offset the peak time cost. Trouble is many people can't afford their own home, solar panels and electric vehicles.

Charging an EV at home already takes all night to charge the battery, even for an average daily commute (REMEMBER that charging at night IS NOT from renewable energy sources)… so besides charging the EV battery from non-renewable sources, how do these companies think they can draw on consumers EV’s overnight and leave them with enough battery in the morning!?!?
…and if a consumer has home batteries installed, why would they allow the retailer to drain them of self-made green energy overnight… only for a pittance of what they would otherwise pay for the same amount from the the grid!!
The people who come up with this nonsense have absolutely no understanding or comprehension of the market.

good job, very clear. we will be incentivisedto install solar and batteries due to intermittent and expensive grid supply - the worst of both worlds. failure isn't a glitch, it is a design feature.

Who exactly will be left to install solar on their homes when increasingly few people will ever actually own their home? Do they believe landlords will install it for their tenants?
They will once becomer even cheaper than it already is. Rentals have air conditioning/heating even though they don't generate any obvious value for them. Given that bills will be lower with solar installed, renters will recognise the benefit for their wallet and some also care about the environment.

Because government allows people with solar to steal power-service from the grid.
If they follow the example here in the US, they will use increasing expenses to drive ppl out of owned homes into rentals, large investment firms will buy up the homes and then be incentivized with tax funded subsidized to do the install after which the politicians will go to the firms for "campaign" funds.
@@ribbyramoneyeah right, for the past 10 years, majority of solar panels from china has been between $.90 or over $1 per watt. First world panel even more. Panels will never reach $.50 per watt to make it "cheap".
All this talk about solar is so cheap but electric bill keeps going up, I didn't know the sun charge for usage 🤔. Unless they need other supplements to keep the grid going.

Sounds like these costings were written by CSIRO, similar to CSIRO GenCost Reports where they don't always include ALL costings, only the costings that make their report look good.
Im in Thailand at present very few solar panels to be seen anywhere!😊😊
How would solar panels work with all the air pollution from fires? The dust in many parts of the country in the dry season would also be a problem requiring regular cleaning

Hi AEMO. Just letting you know you can count me out from your future EV ownership stats as well as rooftop solar and batteries. The reason is that unlike you people at AEMO, I have a brain and I use it.
It won't matter if there's nobody left to notice. By the way, what percentage of our total energy use goes to the grid? Globally the average per country is only 19%. This whole exercise is a sales pitch, nothing more, and they not selling climate mitigation

Oh boy YES you are right about that and I am sure everyone is going to own (not) an EV by 2050 and they are all going to charge them when they are told Hmm (not). My roof top solar was purchased not to save the planet (as it does not) but to reduce my bill and my FIT is shite and we are (those who have roof top solar) just making them lots of money.

They're a signed up member of the Atlas Network, funded by the fossil energy industry and committed to a global disinformation campaign to disrupt and delay the transition to a low emission energy economy. One hail storm in the US just destroyed an ENORMOUS solar farm in five minutes. Who will take on the job of deciding what to do with tens of thousands of useless and unrecoverable solar panels, will they be replaced and who will pay? Well, either your insurance premiums or your taxes.

South Australians are just finding out how deceptive the whole energy market is. Time in use metering is being rolled out and the Frogs want their money back so up go the bills.
I love my roof top solar it has paid for it self and now I am making money from solar on my roof.
Problem occurs when you scale up, or buy batteries. Plus did you listen? Tax payers have helped you with your payment.

It was after 2000 is all I remember I did have to replace the system.

Why these calculations of CSIRO could be trusted but the ones on nuclear don't?
Because the CSIRO figures on nuclear can be easily debunked.
Japan’s Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Nuclear Power Plant Unit 6 took only 39 months for completion.
Nuclear power brings down electricity prices by 75% in Finland.

I am about to go off grid and pull the plug on the grid, I am rural village with 8kw array of off grid with 52kwh batteries, I have a grid connected system of 15kw of array with a 6.4 kwh battery, when the FIT fall I will pull the plug, then I go off grid this grid system will be added to the off grid setup along with an upgrade off grid inverter of 11kw, so I come out of it with 23kw array and 58.4kwh of battery and no shortage of power for a EV in a couple of years, laughing all the way to the bank from here on..

@@Design_no it's normal when taxpayers help one another, that's the whole premise of a democratic society however imperfect it is. We could literally have free energy for everyone if extracting multinationals pay tax proportinately to how much they take away from us. It would be more productive for us toi have them as a target rather than each other.
Until you MUST replace the entire system every ten to fifteen years. Then you start again. Thankfully the life has increased a lot since my first panels in 1995. You'll learn being a tech geek is expensive but fun.
We need ALL of the above in renewables: large-scale solar, wind, and residential solar+battery energy storage.
So AMEO has none the costing if everything is done perfectly, based on a report from NSW University on the amount of roof top solar Australia could theoretically install, the AMEO has done the costing based on if almost every homeowner paid for the Roof Top Solar, Batteries and drove an electrical car by 2050.

Thank God I'm on a stand alone system. Over it's 20 year life it will have saved me enough on electricity bills to pay for two more systems. That includes the cost of diesel for when the sun downs tools.
This is corporate greed in the name of conservation and saving the planet. The only reason I went solar was the cost of connection which was $60,000. I paid for the poles, I paid for the transformer, I paid for the wires and the labour then I owned nothing and had the privilege of paying sky high power bills! Thanks to their greed they now get four fifths of stuff all.

We have VPP technology already and governments could subsidise home batteries… but this would mitigate a whole host of so called “hurdles”💰💰.
The best solution to the transition is not the most profitable route for industry… that’s why it isn’t happening.
I did not understand what she was grieving about. It was a word salad of politician quality. Roof top solar is great. I have come from $1000 /yr to $400 / yr because of solar.
