    Ken Squier (RIP sir) said it at around the 50-minute mark: if it weren't for the Jimmy Means's and J.D. McDuffie's, there'd be no NASCAR racing. Well NASCAR made it impossible for guys like that to run anymore, and now it's just billionaire playboys and dilettantes. It's basically a status symbol. Horse racing but with internal combustion engines instead of live animals and a steering wheel instead of reins.

      I feel car racing was always a rich man's sport, the big difference is that nowadays cars are easy to drive and very safe too. Meanwhile, 40-60 years ago they were much harder to handle and more dangerous, which deterred most dentists and sons of CEOs from racing.
      If NASCAR went to the early Gen6 formula (850hp and minimal downforce), a lot of rich kids would no longer be interested and just focus on GT3 racing!

    **FACTS BEFORE the 1986 RICHMOND 400**
    · Despite 11 wins, Bill Elliott lost the Cup Series title to Darrell Waltrip due to many mechanical problems including a broken transmission at the start of the final race. It was DW’s 3rd title. Ken Schrader was easily the best rookie finishing 16th in points.
    · Watkins Glen joined the schedule for the first time in almost 30 years with a Summer spot right after the Talladega 500.
    · Richard Petty went back to the family team, Petty’s 1985 ride with Curb-Agajanian went to Ron Bouchard while Ron’s seat went to Morgan Shepherd. Meanwhile, Tim Richmond joined Geoff Bodine in Hendrick Motorsports and Rusty Wallace, best rookie in 1984, went to Blue Max.
    · Early on during the Daytona 500, Earnhardt and Bodine fought hard for the lead. Neil Bonnet was a factor too after the 1st stop but not for long because his transmission broke. Shortly after halfway there was a Big One that somehow only knocked out 2 cars: Joe Ruttmann and Cale Yarborough.
    · In the final 170-mile run to the finish, the #3 and #5 once again duked it out. Earnhardt stopped for fuel with a few laps to go while Bodine tried to feather the throttle. Dale’s stop was terrible as he overshot his pit stall and then his engine just stopped working as he was trying to get back up to speed. Bodine won by 11” over Terry Labonte with DW and Bobby Hillin Jr also on the lead lap. BP, Bouchard, Rick Wilson and Rusty Wallace were only 1 lap down.
    · Many big names fell by the wayside including Bobby Allison (42nd, last), Richard Petty (36th, tyre blew), Neil Bonnet (32nd), Harry Gant (30th, crash) and Cale Yarborough (27th). Tim Richmond (20th), Kyle Petty (16th) and others lost many laps due to repairs because of a variety of issues.

      @Slinger43 2 місяці тому +1

      @ChampaBayBeast Yep, double secret probation no doubt 😂
      Here's the bottom line on Dale Sr, if little Bill had sat Senior's dirty driving butt down for a race, he may very well have got it through his Ironhead that he couldn't continue doing other competitors dirty like that, if he had he may very well be alive today. Ol' Captain Jack didn't do Sunday Money any favors, in my opinion he was an accessory in Dale's death!🤷🏻‍♂️

      Just fined. Edit: And some of the fine was later lowered, and they put him on probation for some time I believe. NASCAR never came down hard on Dale like they should have except the 1988 Coca Cola 600.

    @2:30:12 after 40 plus laps of trying, Waltrip gets under Earnhardt. Earnhardt backs up the corner for the crossover,. Waltrip, knowing Earnhardt and sensing the crossover, lingers on the brakes. That messess up Earnhardt's crossover timing. What really happened.

    Nascar has done everything in its power to erase everything cool about Nascar. It's no wonder the sport is in bad shape with a relatively shit fan base. To go from this to Safety first races in glorified plastic, 22 inch rimmed, fuel injected, clutchless, Vinyl garbage is abhorrent.
