Summary:
This powerful and rare recording of the Ramones was culled from the private archives of the late Bill Graham. Recorded three days after Christmas in 1978 at Winterland in San Francisco, it features the seminal punk band in what many feel was its strongest musical period. The band line-up featured here included vocalist Joey Ramone (Jeff Hyman), guitarist Johnny Ramone (John Cummings), bassist Dee Dee Ramone (Doug Colvin), and drummer Marky Ramone (Marc Bell), who had recently replaced original drummer Tommy Ramone (Tamas Erdelyi). Tommy Ramone, a driving force behind the initial band, decided he enjoyed working in the studio more than touring and was now engineering and producing the band's albums.
For this show, all the classics are here, and the band was pumped up, to say the least. The Ramones had just come off the release of their successful late 1977 release, Road To Ruin and were about to see the premiere of Rock N Roll High School, a Roger Corman-produced feature film starring the band. Also during the time of this recording, the band was in the studio with legendary producer, Phil Spector, working on the album that would become End Of The Century.
This recording opens with a fade-in to "Rockaway Beach," which, though incomplete, sets the mood for the entire show. That song is followed by a non-stop barrage of sonic attacks that includes "Teenage Lobotomy," "Blitzkrieg Bop," "I Don't Want You," "Go Mental," "Rock N Roll High School," "I Wanna Be Sedated," "Sheena Is A Punk Rocker," "I Don't Wanna Walk Around With You," and several others.
In true Ramones' style, few of these songs exceed two minutes and 30 seconds, and several clock in at about 90 seconds. Each song shines in its own distinct way, thanks largely to the vocal delivery of Joey Ramone. They also offer some interesting covers, including a remake of the Searchers 1965 hit, "Needles and Pins" (co-written by a pre-Sonny & Cher songwriter, Sonny Bono, and producer Jack Nitzsche), a high-octane re-working of the 1963 Trashmen hit, "Surfin' Bird," and the early '60s pop classic, "Do Ya Wanna Dance." Ending the show with "We're A Happy Family," the band never lets up the energy throughout the entire performance.
Although the Stooges, The MC5, and The New York Dolls cut the pathway that most punk bands would follow, The Ramones were arguably the most important American punk band because of their widespread popularity and long-standing musical legacy. Formed in 1974, the band released their debut LP in 1976 and remained active until they completed the 1996 Lollapolooza Festival Tour. They energized the Manhattan club scene with a raw intensity that in 1974 and '75, helped put New York havens such as CBGBs and Max's Kansas City at the forefront of a brave new musical scene. The band continued through into the early 1980s as punk's premier band, but their popularity dwindled as the techno movement took hold and MTV took over the music industry.
They would remain together with Joey and Johnny Ramone and other members coming and going through 1996, despite the fact that Joe and John had longstanding differences and hardly spoke to each other during the last four years the band was together. Sadly, within three years, between 2001 and 2004, Joey, Johnny, and Dee Dee Ramone would all be dead. Joey and Johnny died of cancer and Dee Dee died of a heroin overdose.
Today, the Ramones are considered the quintessential American punk band.
I’m playing this song 24 hours before New Years because “2020 24 hours to go” 🤷🏻♂️
What a shit year ...forget it amnesia
Yeah... don’t do it again, now we know it isn’t good luck
BRILLIANT
That's a good one though, too bad in nowadays it's 2022, and we cannot do 2020 24 hours to go...
аххахаххахаххахха
Punk music is better heard live. not saying it sucks in the recording, you just get the feel, it's more dramatic when you can see the band.
Seeing it in the comfort of your home and going to a show is two different stories
I was lucky to saw them alive. ,even i have all the records and tapes, recordin in studio form, but they are just so.much faster in live and thats lifeexperience, one of rare advantage of my age. They rocks like nobody else.no much talkin, just 1234 and go..,only bad its that in theirs lives then wasnt such a good recording like today is usualy, just in educative purpose. Greetings,1234...
Except with the Ramones you lost your hearing
Some things have to be felt/experienced... "punk" was one of them. In its initial concept, it was fast, brutal and stripped down; so were the places to "experience" it, the fans, and the people who made the music. "Danger" was always an element, both real and perceived.
@@uzeriks I saw them live at least 3 times: CBGBs, CBGBs theater and Brighton (England). Maybe also Central Park. Only in CBGBs ('76) did I lose my hearing
I love punk. It's like drinking coffee, but leaving out the milk and sugar. And water. Just give me the raw coffee grounds. Essence of music.
Ive never heard a better explanation of punk than that!
I always loved how they would play stuff live so much faster than on the album.
Exactly. Why aren't live concerts like that anymore?
compared to how they've done this song other times, this is pleasantly normal speed.
Yes!! needs more energy for those live performances. Sad this idea fell off the planet and putting in less effort live is the way now..
Dee Dee has that bass so damn low dude. I like my shit low but wow this dude is on another level LOL
you mean volume or height? because both are low haha
hahahahaa i mean the height but the volume is quite low too
+Kevin Swift yeah, cj's was even lower, like touching his knees
CJ explained that to play that fast, you have to hold the bass low otherwise you wound your wrist and fingers. It took him quite a while to realise that and find the right position 🎼🤠♠️🇫🇷🇨🇭🌺😊🎸
It's sick!! There's no way I could play with my guitar slung that low LOL
So sad, all 4 members are dead....
Well I understand that Tommy was an original member but... Mark was in the Ramones wayyy longer and deserves most of the credit. And he's still alive!
Yes Mark is still alive, but most bands of 70´s have all his members alive. However The ramones only have one member alive!!
@@plaguedog5744 3
@@NorthCascades who are the other 3?
@@tiocfaidharla4256 Mark, CJ and Richie are still alive.
never had a top 40 hit, but they were known all over the world, hard to believe the original band members have all died, they are missed
At 12 am,
the night before New Years Eve, it will be Ramones time.
It will be 2020, 24 hours to go.
BicycleJoeLofi Soundandvision Yes! And also a year from now when it is 2020, 24 hours to go.
riley99 right you are
I can’t control my fingers
I can’t control my brain
Ba ba baba
Joey R, deliverin' the freakin' goods. His vocals are a marvel.
Jesus you have taste
nobody comes close to the pipes Joey kept pumpin. A true rock/punk/ GOD.
The four original founding members of the group from the Forest Hills neighborhood of NYC have indeed died, most from cancer related illnesses. Their legacy is that they did develop and start the punk rock music style. They were the first. While not great musicians they wrote their own material and put on an exciting energetic show. R.I.P. guys you left your mark.
Death from Detroit , and The Electric Eels , to name a couple of garage bands in the early 70's who had the same broad style , could be given credit for " Inventing " Punk , but , it was a continuation of a mid - 60's garage style of rock . The Sonics and others in 66' had a template that was very similar . I know full - on Ramones fans will disagree - either way - The Ramones were great ! Just not " the First " - no - one was .
they are so missed, began in 74 when I finished HS, at 67 I still feel connected to them
My ticket says All Ages Welcome THE RAMONES, State Theater, Detroit, 2115 Woodward Avenue, WED OCT 28, 92, 7:30PM SHOW
Damnnnn 🔥🔥🔥
The originators of punk rock. Love the Ramones!
Sex Pistols have that distinction, 1972. Ramones started two years later.
cosmictrigger9 Los Saicos, 1964.
what they are saying is if was not for the ramones there would be no greenday cutting off they rest of todays punk pop punk and even some pop artist
Dan B. That is incorrect. Sex Pistols started in 1975. The Ramones started in 74. They are the originators of punk rock.
Dan B. Punk didn't even exist in 1972 lol
Totally completely bloody fucking amazing ❤❤
nothing to do...........i wanna go home............ i wanna be sedated.........
Raven Meadows you wanna be sedated ?
I was born in 1962 and this is the world's best punk group DEDE on bass did almost all the music.
...SONG OF THE DAY!!!
RAMONES - I WANNA BE SEDATED (1978)
Unforgettable Ramones
Anyone who says The Ramones didn’t start Punk Rock is a dirty liar!
This guys never heard of Iggy Pop. And if you're even going that far Iggy was highly influenced by Morrison going up on stage head full of acid and just killing it.
Like Velvet Underground, Stooges, and NYD were all precursors to punk that influenced all the "punk" bands like Sex Pistols and The Ramones and The Damned
@@TheMostBoringGuy Those three bands are absolutely where the elements of punk started to coalesce. All in and around the New York scene in the 70s. Their sound and especially their ATTITUDE was huge in creating the idea of "punk" music. They weren't the first to play hard and fast and sing about drugs and fucking and being poor and misunderstood, but they were some of the first to do it with a style that really spoke to guys like the Ramones, Blondie, the Dead Boys etc
Today Commemorates Joey Ramone's 65th Birthday
I wish all these guys were still livingggg......! "sniff"
Saw the Ramones at the Agora Ballroom in Houston in 1981, then at the Keystone in Palo Alto, CA in 1983. Saw them a couple of times after that in the Bay Area. Always small venues. Those were some of the highest energy shows I have ever seen. I still can visualize their non-stop delivery, just like this video... Wow!.. Un-friggin-believable...
I saw them in Houston ‘81 also .
Oh man I remember I sang this at a preschool talent show when I was like 3 or 4 or so.
That wouldn’t happen in todays time 😂
Dangerous
it's untouchable, it is punk, all of these guys are legends, appreciate, assimilate and 1234
Now I know where Julian Casablancas got his ways from ;)
;)
oath
What belated success “I Wanna Be Sedated” had. 10 years later it charted!

The originators of punk rock. Love the Ramones!
I got into the Ramones because they were on the Simpsons. =)
as good a way as any
Have the Rolling Stones killed.
rozzie101 "I just wanna say, this gig sucks!"
Really? That's GREAT that's funny
They were like a cartoon come to life
I got into them because they were at CBGB one night I was there.
Def one of the top 3 punk groups.
+Cliff Hanley I disagree. If any of the major punk bands should be called New Wave, it's the Clash. They were their own thing & didn't really have the conventional punk sound like Ramones or Stooges or the Pistols, & the Clash also experimented with other genres like reggae. It's that experimental aspect that makes their sound more like New Wave then punk. Ramones were from NY but that doesn't make their sound New Wave
Well greenday I always see at top lists but they are pop punk
@@anthonysclafani3963 the Clash were a few years after the Ramones
#AloneTogether #WorldWar3 #covid-19 Song of the Century for sure. Was lucky to see the Ramones live in 77 through 86 in Brooklyn and Manhattan. I'm old but I saw the greatest rock n roll and PUNK concerts!
Me too.
He has a fantastic vocal range
i love joey one of my favorite most unique singers ever but.. no
SOOO FREAKN GOOD

legendary
Cuando vi el video por primera vez me dije. Que ondas con el Howard Stern cantando
Perfect tempo. I prefer this compared to their later performances where they sped up the song.
Love the Ramones!
CBGB'S!!!!!! 👿👿🤐😷🤕 24.....!!
I love it
One of the best male voices
The Sex Pistols were a boy band created by Malcolm McLaren to sell clothes at his boutique, 'SEX'. Anybody who doesn't know this doesn't know a goddamn thing about punk rock.
*I WANNA BE SEDATED WITH A GAMEBOY*
the guitar is way to quiet in the mix !!!
Nothing to do nowhere to go
I think this song is genius. It's a fairly repetitive song with minimum changes throughout about a life that is fairly repetitive with minimal changes throughout. Brilliant IMO
God is pogoing up in Heaven! 😢
So sad, all 4 members are dead....
Now I know where Julian Casablancas got his ways from ;)

ONE, THREE, THREE, FOUR!
I wound up buying a Romones original used in concert mid-size drum from a rodie who was going into the Salvation Army to see if he could sell it. I paid him a burrito, a tank of gas, and a carton of smokes. He said he stole but well ok I really didn't hear that part.
Солдат шёл по улице домой и увидел этих ребят! "Чья ваша мама, ребята?", - спросил у ребят солдат...
I’ve always wanted to know why Marky plays most of this on the ride cymbal live. I assumed this was something he started doing later in their career but obviously they’ve been doing this since 78
🎉🎉🎉🎉
what is it about the ramones. that we love
there is something magical about the way they pull of 2 minute songs that feel like 10 fucking minutes
it wouldn't be appropriate and it wouldn't be respectful to joey if I didn't swear here. fuck
What kinda crazy chorus is on his voice? It sounds cool except that they have him way too hot in the mix. It’s like they didn’t compensate for the volume the effect added. Just wish I knew if it was chorus or a super short delay.
marky playing the ride cymbal the whole time is a little aggravating
That's how the song was recorded, and he came up with the drum part
Def one of the top 3 punk groups.
I wish all these guys were still livingggg......! "sniff"
Damn I love the Ramones but they play like there all on drugs...which they probably are
Looking for Ramones best about 15 songs. What would you suggest me? Thanks
I got into the Ramones because they were on the Simpsons. =)

At least Marky is still here
joey, cuantos ataques sicoticos te daban cantando?XD
Those were the days! Max's Kansas City!
first punkrockers ever!
Cliff Hanley I'd say that their first album and demos were punk. Now if you're talking 80s ramones, then yes, they are pop... Well sort of.
They were always pop as punk was always pop...they were inspired by bubblegum girl groups from the 60’s. It always had that feel, just sped up and stripped down but it was always melodic and always catchy. Now the stooges were never really “pop” in that same way, they were the other wing I guess you could say on the musical spectrum but the Ramones sang about the beach, girls, cars, and general fun things like the dickies did after them. Seems pretty pop to me
My favorite band OF ALL TIME
R.I.P Ramon Brothers Forever Missed
Vocals need uh
Little work I guess
All this "Who came first BLA FUCKING BLA!!!" People... come together and try to not "fight" but enjoy punk for what it "is." Yes punk is fucking cool! We all know that... duh... Another band that no one knows about (or at least not the majority) was called "Death"... circa 1971... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_(protopunk_band)
Now... please... take a fucking chill pill.... and LIKE what the fuck you like, and respect what others like... ummm.. stop being so fucking defensive, or "I'm punker than thou"... such bullshit... The whole "I'm punker than you are" mentality is such bullshit!" Goes against the entire mentality of punk rock by the way...
Enjoy this vid for what it is... GOLD
For people who say the quality is bad, it was filmed 41 years ago.
the mix is very vocal heavy... which is nice for a change

This band started the "Punk Rock movement" it didn't catch on in the U.S. as much as it did it the U.K and they hardly did not get the notoriety and the prestige as later bands did-but the music reflected the times when New York looked like shit and the raw "punk" style that they produced- clearly IS the RAMONES.
The Ramones live were something else. Flat out, four to the floor, from the word go, and no let up until they stopped. On a personal level, they may have been utterly dysfunctional, but turn them loose on stage, and no-one else was like them.
Thay are so Fresh 🤩🇹🇭🎉🪷🌈☃️
