I wouldn't mind walking around with one of these just to have someone steal it and be like "HAH I GOT YOUR LAPTOP!" and then i can turn and say "HAH that's a piece of shit!" and then i run off laughing maniacly as they are left to suffer.
In fact most (if not all) POP stations and similar devices use LCD technology, not LED. It's just that some are backlit and essentially have the polariser the wrong way round, so you're getting transparent sprites - allowing the light to shine through.
I don't know if anyone mentioned this yet, but the "Quad Station" is sold under the brand name "Copyer" (yes, COPYER!), model YD-631. I saw it for $5 (£2.70) and the box they were in was quite full.
i've been trying to find this stupid little console (if you can even call it that) ever since the one that me and my brother shared broke when we were like 4 years old. You sir, are incredible.
That's because the classic rock stations are too busy playing "Don't Stop Believin'" by Journey for the eleven billionth time. Or ads. If you've never listened to Abbey Road in its entirety, you really ought to. You can't get the same experience just listening to individual songs from it. In fact most Beatles albums were like that.
+TheRealSiguy Couldn't have said it better myself. heh, in fact they don't even play ANY Beatles on the classic rock stations where I live. It's quite sad really. Oh well.. At least I have the anthology CDs to keep me entertained in my car.
"Slaver" ... Seems like a sort of hidden message from the poor idiot who's forced to makes these to anyone who honestly buys these for fun. I guess no-one got the message...
It's a programming thing... I don't know why they've used those words though. If you read all the loading sequences of an old computer you'll see master and slaver protocols.
Holy shit, i actually have that same exact Neo Quad thing since my 12 year old self thought it was cool (i was foolish). Wow, that came a bit unexpcted, if only i had seen this video earlier!
You never fail to make me laugh, Ashen! Also, please get the caterpillar to sing You Know My Name (Look Up The Number), because I think that one is pretty obscure.
Fun fact: The obscure Beatles song that the caterpillar sings is "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" from their Abbey Road album. Just found that out today. And the song itself is...interesting.
I got one of these things a few years back. I wasn't a Pop Station, or at least it didn't really have any removable screens of any sort. It just had the one 'Submarine Invasion' game... Man, the worst seven dollars I had spent up until I got that roddy LCD Sudoku.
after digging around the internet i found this company description about manley: Toy Quest is about fun. With over three decades of experience, we strive to entertain kids with out-of-the-box, inventive products that utilize current technologies. Besides developing our own proprietary brands, Toy Quest has established lasting relationships with several top licenses including Disney, Honda, Trading Spaces, Spider-Man, Six Flags, Little Tikes, Tonka, Power Rangers, Hot Wheels, and Barbie.
i think i've laughed too much, i've gone light headed. the whole football and south bank show based helicopter game have given me a huge smile. thank you very much, have a subscription as a token of my gratitude.
so the caterpillar singing obscure beatles songs is a recurring theme? if you can find the video he sings the benefit of Mr kite, I'll give you a dollar.
By the way, ToyQuest (from the tilt games video) is the American branch of Manley. And Manley is a distributor of ShenZhen MingHaoWei Electronic Factory, the makers of the ZC games (the "popstations").
I saw this video back when it was first posted, the other day the caterpillar part popped into my head. Now, I can't get it out of my head. Damn you Ashen! haha
I actually got a vaguely iPod shaped thing as a present from my aunt. It worked and to an extent looked like the Pro-Pop, but it had FM/AM radio, no color, and around 6 "games" (screens) included. Needless to say, it got about one use before being forgotten in a dusty corner. I can only remember two games, a Formula One game and a shitty football game. At least it was functional on some level, unlike the POP Stations. It was also made by a respectable company, with no engrish on the packaging or instructions. EDIT: I forgot, it had no backlight, so it was a pain to play.
I'd like to decap one of these. Put the silicon die under the microscope. Better yet, get MULTIPLE specimens to decap. From experience decapping 4 function calculators, they like to change the silicon design for seemingly no reason. I'm guessing state machine. Combinational logic, counters, frequency synths, _maybe_ some lookup roms.
Why did the Godmonster not cheer you up? Anyway, great review, I especially loved the venom in your voice when you were commenting on the "Realistic colours" and "Realistic Gameplay"!
I think those LEDs are their idea of a back light... I had a phone and one of the default ringtones was the Helicopter music. I think it's an actual classical song that's public domain, let me know if I'm wrong but if I'm not I wonder what song it is.
OH MY FOOKING GOD i have to get one of those :O the graphics on them are almost life like its incredible, i mean just look at the textures and the shading used... INCREDIBLE, and TWO whole sound settings? :O i almost shit my pants
@TheDudeFromPlanetJay I believe the song being played during the God-Monster part is "In Dulci Jubilo" a 14th century German carol. Not 100% sure but a song in my hymnal sounds suspiciously like it. Hope that helps!
That caterpillar earned my subscribe.
+TheShadowWalker Bleach needed
Alaeriia I love toilet roll !!!
wut
That caterpillar is sensational.
7 years ago " I said we're not going to do anymore pop stations"
if only you knew..
I miss that cattapillar
He's in a better place.
@@IrishRhapsody yeah. Wherever it is now, hope it’s still hammering down those obscure Beatles songs
@@lorumipsum1129 For your love for such a great caterpillar, I have made your 50th subscription. Please remember him forevermore.
I wonder did Quincy the Caterpillar ever become a butterfly?
***** no he/she dead a natural death
i wonder what his/her son sings obscure queen songs?
Quincy returned in the 2016 Halloween video, when Stuart's rage briefly broke reality.
i tried sending "my love" but the envelope got awfully moist. :-(
+Alkapow Portstar I don't think that's the kind of love people often think when you tell them you sent them one.
DarkBabyIon ohh, it's no wonder nobody ever writes back then
+Alkapow Portstar Not gonna lie, I accidentally read your name as Alkapow Pornstar at first

OH, FECK.
I wouldn't mind walking around with one of these just to have someone steal it and be like "HAH I GOT YOUR LAPTOP!" and then i can turn and say "HAH that's a piece of shit!" and then i run off laughing maniacly as they are left to suffer.
You sir have made an epic comment.
***** Obviously.
Man how old is his catapillar?
That little fella should be a butterfly by now.
ashens pressed the B button to stop it turning into a butterfly
Aww now I'm sad (R.I.P Quincy the caterpillar who sings obscure Beatles songs)
Ten years later in 2019 Ashen's hasn't changed a bit, the only thing that's changed is the camera quality and audio quality lol. (in a good way)
And no random bullshite at the end.
He's also accepted the fact Popstations are going to a part of his life permanently and will probably be the cause of his death
In fact most (if not all) POP stations and similar devices use LCD technology, not LED. It's just that some are backlit and essentially have the polariser the wrong way round, so you're getting transparent sprites - allowing the light to shine through.
***** It's LCD.
Milen Topov That went right over your head.
"Sounds like a roomful of exploding budgies" Classic Ashens line
I don't know if anyone mentioned this yet, but the "Quad Station" is sold under the brand name "Copyer" (yes, COPYER!), model YD-631. I saw it for $5 (£2.70) and the box they were in was quite full.

Its just a flashlight with a game option ashens ; )
My favorite part is the caterpillar
Since when is Maxwell's Silver Hammer an "obscure" Beatles song?
My thoughts exactly!
SmegPod It was obscure to me at the time. I never heard it on the radio, not even the classic rock stations.

7:21 - "Hello my baby, hello my honey, hello my ragtime gal!"
Great title card BTW doc, it made me chuckle.
"Slaver"
...

Cloak of Amarillo Poor?
I remember getting the Neo Quad for Christmas.
I just imagined a bunch of those cheapo wrestling figures growing life-sized and finding work in a Pop-station factory.
0:20 I know I said I won't be covering pop stations or neo double games anymore" 8 years later
"Sounds like a room full of exploding budgies."
Classic Ashens ^_^
I can't believe someone else knows about The God-Monster of Indian Flats!
"It sounds like a room full of exploding budgies."
For a few seconds there I thought I was going to die of laughter.
Holy shit, i actually have that same exact Neo Quad thing since my 12 year old self thought it was cool (i was foolish). Wow, that came a bit unexpcted, if only i had seen this video earlier!
me too, i think i was 11 when i got cursed with this
+Twrmois Lynx i always saw crap like that at kmart and could never afford it. i guess i wasnt missing out on much
"Who designs these things, and why are they allowed to live?"
That just sums up all the Pop Station stuff in one amusing statement.
These things will be worth it as long as there's people like you who keep reviewing them.
You have our love XD
I wonder if any more "Neo Quad Games" consoles are out there...
1:49 made me laugh so hard.
whenever i feel down, i can always count on you to make me smile (:
Which are worse? Tiger Electronic Games/Wrist games? Or the POP Station saga?
Tiger Electronic, because it was released as an actual thing, instead of being a cheap foreign thing, they also actually tried.
Ok. Thanks
That caterpillar needs to return. Also loved the bit at 1:46. XD
I've came back to watch all your videos after many many years :)
all walking around going ERGG making Pop-stations lol.
Finally working properly. Great video as always!
Makes me wonder what he does with the things once he's done reviewing them though.
What a complete disservice to my last name! Making cheap knock-off POP Stations!
The Neo Quad Games' sound was actually rather impressive for what i was expecting.
Pretty sure the rip off images on the quad for street overlord are characters from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure
no it's iori and benimaru from kof but benimaru is just polnareff anyway
i watch these over and over again every night before i go to bed XD
I just keep watching your reviews they're amazing, man I just keep laughing xD
There are no words for that type of quality.
as someone who grew up listening to Beatles songs, i dont find Maxwell's Silver Hammer to be obscure...
It is lesser known though.
The only console I've ever seen where the bezel is brighter than the display.
WTF was that thing at the end?
I...don't...know.
Luke Beauchamp That would be the "Godmonster" from the movie "The "Godmonster of Indian Flats"
You have to give popstation some credit, they're better at game preservation that any triple A gaming company.
Props to Ashen who does this stuff,
Props to the people to sends stuff to Ashen so we can see this stuff,
Awesome!
I love the Caterpillar at the start. Best few seconds of my life.
I got one of these things a few years back.
I wasn't a Pop Station, or at least it didn't really have any removable screens of any sort. It just had the one 'Submarine Invasion' game... Man, the worst seven dollars I had spent up until I got that roddy LCD Sudoku.
I love the way you pronounce Benimaru.

"Going round goin urrrrrgh as they make popstations" lmfao
What has been seen...CANNOT BE UNSEEN!
NOW I understand the Master/Slaver thing!
Master- The one who plays
Slaver- The one to hold in the screen for Street Overlord.
the neo prop games was originally just called "game player" and is being sold at $20 at discount stores in Singapore
That caterpillar made me laugh, was not expecting that, classic!
ashens i cant describe the joy you bring to my youtube time.........
so the caterpillar singing obscure beatles songs is a recurring theme? if you can find the video he sings the benefit of Mr kite, I'll give you a dollar.
Hes done that one.
By the way, ToyQuest (from the tilt games video) is the American branch of Manley. And Manley is a distributor of ShenZhen MingHaoWei Electronic Factory, the makers of the ZC games (the "popstations").
I was bobbing my head during the demo listening to that sfx beat.
Never has a caterpillar made me cry with joy before.
This intro is turning 15 this year
Even on video theses leds are a pain to look at !
It feels like it will shatter under any sort of pressure - and with any luck it will!!
I saw this video back when it was first posted, the other day the caterpillar part popped into my head. Now, I can't get it out of my head.
Damn you Ashen! haha
It looks like something you would get at McDonald
I once got an LED toy from McDonalds that, no joke, was better than a POP station
That caterpillar was a legend.
LOL Quincy for prez! I love when he says "Ughhh.... this stuff doesn't happen to normal people."
Is this the first appearance of the classic Street Overlord music?
I once owned a POP Station with that Helicopter game... It came free with a shirt.
I actually got a vaguely iPod shaped thing as a present from my aunt. It worked and to an extent looked like the Pro-Pop, but it had FM/AM radio, no color, and around 6 "games" (screens) included. Every time I hear "In Dulci Jubilo" I'm going to visualise the Godmonster of Indian Flats attempting to dance with a hippy lol.
The beginning "music" on basketball sounded like a cat walking across the music keyboard thing
Wonderful as always, Dr. Ashens!
"Yup, it holds four of the bastards"
hahaha cant get enough of you. so funny.
I'd like to decap one of these. Put the silicon die under the microscope.
Better yet, get MULTIPLE specimens to decap. From experience decapping 4 function calculators, they like to change the silicon design for seemingly no reason.
I'm guessing state machine. Combinational logic, counters, frequency synths, _maybe_ some lookup roms.
that caterpillar was hilarious
"Only one thing can cheer me up now, GODMONSTER!"
*OMG, Godmonster is dancing*
"Uhh, I feel much worse now"
Why did the Godmonster not cheer you up?
Anyway, great review, I especially loved the venom in your voice when you were commenting on the "Realistic colours" and "Realistic Gameplay"!
I think I watch these videos to be happier that i have actual entertainment devices.
I think those LEDs are their idea of a back light... I had a phone and one of the default ringtones was the Helicopter music. I think it's an actual classical song that's public domain, let me know if I'm wrong but if I'm not I wonder what song it is.
That caterpiller part is great! lol
when i saw the master and slaver part. i nearly died of laughter..ah gosh man, your pure awesome.
I had 30 of those things and made a little money at a flea market.
these 2 kids in particular went wild
3:03 sounds like my alarm clock I used to use.
4:28 Oh hai Iori and Benimaru! *Waves emphatically*
Haha, those KoF character ripoffs were so random. Also the opening to Helicopter sounds a lot like "Hello, my baby."
Haha, the exploding budgies comment cracked me up. We have budgies at our house, that Street Overlord game will make them go nuts.
While I was browsing vids, I saw the exact same thing i got on September 1st 2009!
the music on street overlord is epic
Caterpillar, Godmonster and Ashens quote "Who designs these things and why are they allowed to live?" = WIN!
the Neo Quad Games was called a game station. a street stall was selling it for $20
OH MY FOOKING GOD i have to get one of those :O the graphics on them are almost life like its incredible, i mean just look at the textures and the shading used... INCREDIBLE, and TWO whole sound settings? :O i almost shit my pants
This could be considered POPstation watch 0.
This video unfortunately freezes up for me shortly past the 2 minute mark. Bummer, love your stuff Ashens!
I want the Neo Quad games thing. I can use it's case for great things. Maybe a cool portable game system mod in a laptop form.
Yes I love your reviews of knock off products. This is why I subscribed.
I actually got the lap top one once for christmas when i was 10...and actually liked it. God i was sad
@TheDudeFromPlanetJay I believe the song being played during the God-Monster part is "In Dulci Jubilo" a 14th century German carol. Not 100% sure but a song in my hymnal sounds suspiciously like it. Hope that helps!
