Last year at Red Rocks for the 4th of July, I had a backstage pass because friends of mine were one of the openers. When they were doing the sound check, their sound guy said, "Do you hear that reverb? That's entirely from the rocks."
Embarrassingly this is the first time I have watched anyone describe how they dial in reverb levels. Usually it gets used as an effect rather than an enhancement.
Excellent response!! I anticipated you saying that you use reverb and how you use it. The hand built Reverbs you mentioned. The ones made by the gentleman in Greece. Are they exclusive built for you? Or will he build them on request for others?
The whole "subwoofers should be seen and not heard" mindset makes sense if were strictly talking about recordings of non-powered acoustical instruments. That mindset falls short once we start talkin Hip-Hop & EDM type music. Much of those recordings were done with the intention of rattling the fillings out of your teeth from the bass.
Not true at all. Regardless of the music, A well-tuned subwoofer should not stand out as a separate speaker. It should sound like all of the bass is coming from the main speakers. But if you're sitting there listening and you turn the sub off and on it will become immediately apparent that something changed, but it should still be perceived that the missing sound is coming from the same spot as everything else. Even on a bass line with notes that go into the sub's range, if the bass is paned left or right of center, your brain will think the low bass is coming from the same spot if you have it setup right.
@@slode1693 Yes, when you can sense the location of the subwoofer it's because some sounds are coming from it that are not sub bass such as harmonic distortion or vent noise. I also play hip-hop and EDM on my systems and never can I sense the location of any of my subwoofers. As you play louder, a subwoofer might create higher distortion making it's location noticeable.
@@ThinkingBetter Unless you're trying to use a sub crossed over above 80Hz with some small satellite speakers you should never hear huffing or distortion without your mains, and your eardrums. close to the point of blowing up. If you can hear huffing or distortion, it is either not setup properly, is too small to make a difference, or is crossed over too high.
@@slode1693 My point is if you don't cross over in both ways but allow your stereo speakers to be full-range, those smaller speakers might be causing more harm than good in the lower bass as their cones can't move the full distance and will start compressing (at higher volumes). I prefer to do a proper cross-over for book-shelf size stereo speakers.
In addition to putting reverb in the recordings, does PS Audio also perhaps put some reverb circuitry in the preamps and/or power amps, to help create that "house sound?"

That's nonsense. DSD is an excellent format in preserving the individual tracks. PCM (incl. DXD) is the format making digital mastering possible with modern features. PCM is also what is optimum for distribution as it allows downstream audio processing for EQ, cross-over, wireless audio etc. Why is DXD not an audiophile choice? DXD 352.8kHz 24 bits PCM is far higher sample rate and bit resolution than CD 44.1kHz 16 bits PCM. If you think listening to CD can be "audiophile" then FOR SURE, listening to DXD is far more audiophile.
Hi Paul, I've eagerly tried to experience the benefit of your DSD recordings but haven't been successful. Would you offer a step by step explanation to help me and other experience the value that you're offering? Setup: Chord Mojo DAC Hifiman Arya Headphones Windows Operating System Amazon HD streaming... because Qobuz doesn't work on VPN. Thank you in advance! For the record, Amazon HD recordings are incredible, significantly better than Tidal.

Great vid, inspired my first comment to your channel.

Well it's like using a guitar pedal, it's art, it's about emotions
Not overdoing reverb is exactly what an audiophile would do.
You have a great philosophy for effects like this.
Another excellent tip! Thanks
I play my guitar without strings to reduce the reverb. 😂

Paul missed a great opportunity to put reverb on his voice here.

The Beastie Boys were well known to check their mixes literally using a car audio system for just one example.

I think Lucas is looking for a job! you have to make him head of marketing with that passion😂
Reverb has become an entity that you 'have to add' because some producer on YT said so.
In addition to putting reverb in the recordings, does PS Audio also perhaps put some reverb circuitry in the preamps and/or power amps, to help create that "house sound?"
No.
Now I got curious, what type of reverb are you using? Spring/tank reverb I guess. Plate reverb is a bit bulky. However all can be driven by tubes.

A small live jazz ensemble playing in a room packed with people would not have natural reverberation, so why add it?
