    I also have a pair of Klipsch Chorus 2. They originally were made to replace the Cornwalls but a passive radiator instead of ports. I did almost exactly what Danny said to do with bracing. The wood cabinet braces and I used auto damping mat on everything including the horn and driver baskets. Upgraded the crossover components. Night and day difference on cleaning up the coloration. Turned them from a good speaker to a great speaker. Highly recommend following Danny’s advice.

      @@tracyleavitt-ur1if sorry no. It was years ago right before Covid and I didn’t take pics. As for the crossover I replaced the caps, 1 sand cast resistor and an I believe 2 inductors with air coils. I replaced the tweeter diaphragm with a Crites titanium. For the cabinet I used 4 - 1”x2” boards going from the 2 sides of the cabinets. I used Kilmat on all internal surfaces of the cabinet. I also put Kilmat on the mid horn, the woofer and passive radiator basket. I also added a washer on the passive radiator of I think 2 or 3 oz to lower the frequency range. I have been thinking of looking at a completely new crossover for them. I don’t use them much so it’s not a high priority.

      As Danny was talking about internal damping I thought about the auto damping mat. It worked in my hot rod it should do well in any cabinet that is a buzz box. You also don't need to cover the entire inside surface. A pad of the mat centered on the panel is usually enough to dampen vibration. If you have a die cast horn in the box wrap that with mat also to minimize ringing. I'm not a fan of horns since I stopped using them in my speaker builds back in the late '70's.

    I was waiting for you to do a pair of these. Two years or so ago I took some of your advice and helped a friend of mine line the interior of a pair of these with half inch sheets of chip board. I recalled Wharfedale doing so to the interiors of their cabinets to a great effect. We took out the drivers and ditched those boards inside and with 3/4" wood screws and Titebond we effectively doubled the weight of the things. We replaced the connectors with all brass, soldered quality wires in place and elevated them off the floor with a pair of butcher's block stands of about 14" in height. Are they as good as having your new networks inside? No. But, God, were they cleaner afterward. And being honest, the chip boarding in place of a ton of little braces was pretty easy to put in. We even routed the holes for the drivers.

      @@stephenyoud6125 I replaced the tweeter and crossover with a Crites set up. I damped the “doghouse” with damping material and the same with the woofer basket. I did not touch the mid horn as Crites told me the mid horn sounded best untouched from their testing. There really is not much to do on the cabinet for bracing because it’s a horn not truly a cabinet and it’s very stiff. Why I only did damping. And like my Chorus 2 they went from very good to fantastic. Really cleans up the detail.

    Good to see Danny had some good things to say about the cornwall. The cornwall was origially designed in 1959, the hay-day of jazz, rock and other non-synthetic music. Good to see Danny is offering an upgrade in crossover parts and methods to firming up the cabinet. These speakers look heavy to begin with, I can only imagine what these speakers would weigh with added internal bracing and treatment.

    I own Kilpsch and Vandersteens. Two totally different sound philosophies. One time aligned, the other about dynamics. I personally love dynamics over audiophile precision. That live music sound is magical in its own right. The Vandys are beautiful too though, their imaging and smoothness. It's a matter of taste. I wish I had a bigger house, I'd have both set up at the same time in different rooms.

      @@pnichols6500 Well said. @Hifiandrew Well spoken. Also the CW IV is way beyond the CW III as the CW III has been known to be a rushed blunder by Klipsch. I have CW I's and would not trade them for the CW III. It makes since the CW III would be speaker Danny would pick to pounce on as that's the model out of the Cornwall series with the most issues. The one sided BS came out when he started saying regular drivers are better than horns. Horns are more efficient with less distortion while requiring a lot less power to run than regular full size drivers. This is why the CW series can run on as little as 15 watts TUBE amplification and run a person out of a 25x25 room. Horns can fill a very large area with a lot less power and sound fantastic while doing so. The truth is Horns have advantages that regular drivers don't have and regular drivers have advantages horns don't have. Hmmmm... that wasn't mentioned. Danny didn't clarify horns vs regular drivers, because he doesn't know or is that biased on his opinion.Type of amplification (solid state vs tubes) has another big part to play in dynamics. Last, Danny didn't explain to the potential purchaser that his kit will not work well with the CW I, II or IV and would be a back step. I guess he can sell more kits this way. What a blunder or simply shameful if that was the intent. At least this kit will make big improvements to the CW III so those folks will be happy.

    • @countdebleauchamp
      @countdebleauchamp Місяць тому +1

      I'll take the Vandys (having owned 2 pair of model 2's) with a kickass hi power solid state amp to keep them from sounding too soft, as they may tend to do with a tube amp. I had them playing with an ARC D100 tube amp, and although very satisfying, they lacked the last bit of slam, quickness and impact.
      For the price of the Cornwalls you can get the Signature 3A's, a much better Vandersteen speaker than the 2's.
      I'd settle for the Cornwalls with a good tube amp, don't need a lot of power so you could really get a sweet sounding tube amp at 50 watts/channel or so and get plenty of volume .

    • @mgsee
      @mgsee Місяць тому +1

      @@lithiumstatic I don't think he dismissed the efficiency of horns. I thought he highlighted the downside of their physical design in relation to potential time-alignment issues when used in multi-driver systems. Also he pointed out, some folks prefer a big, wall of sound presentation, while others are interested in a sound that is more nuanced and three dimensional. I would also expect that the kind of music you listens to would also determine the type of speakers you preferred.

      Vandersteens time aligned makes me laugh. Send us the step impulse response. Not even Stereophile could get that even close to time aligned. No matter the model. Despite Richard’s insistence. Doesn’t matter anyway, there are better speakers out there without it. Although at least he tried with 1st order crossovers that somehow ended up with 22 parts. Which is not what a 1st order crossover looks like. Marketing genius. Knew some stuff and is good at pulling the wool.

    The timing issue is noticeable, and that's why good professional audio setups using external active crossovers use time delay to sync the woofers and the horns. I tri-amp my speakers, and my Rane AC23 enables this, as does the Behringer Pro CX3400. I tried a Sublime K231, and it might have been slightly better quality, but my EV H350 mid horn voice coil is over 18 inches to the reear of the woofer, and about 16 inches behind the tweeter voice coil. I felt there was a noticeable improvement using the Rane time delay.

    I bought a pair of Cornwall 1.5's for $172 in an estate auction. The base of one cabinet had to be completely rebuilt. I decided to completely gut them and put on real veneer. The 1.5's have rear-mounted drivers so the whole back comes off to access the drivers and crossover. So there is no real way to brace the back baffle. I took a section of cabinet material and created an arched brace between the woofer and midrange that ties the front and sides together. Not perfect but I could instantly tell a difference when knocking on the cabinet. And I routered the edge edges of the brace to help diffraction. Then I bought silver-level replacement B-3 crossovers from Crites to dump the stock and added two layers of damping materials inside. One layer of 20 mm closed cell dense acoustic foam covered by a 1/2" of a wool mat product is also sold as damping. They sound great but I'd like to replace the tweeter with the SMAHL option in the future. You'd be amazed by how many negative responses I got in the Klipsch groups. A lot of folks have really tied their personal worth to the Klipsch Heritage line and any indication that Paul Klipsch's designs aren't perfect is the same as denigrating their mothers. I'm glad this kit is for the 3's considering I've already done the work on my 1.5's. I have a pair of JBL L100s that I rebuilt as well. When I first got them, I also had a pair of Cerwin Vega 316R's, which had a similar sensitivity. I powered all 4 speakers with a Pioneer SX-1980 Stereo Receiver for about 15 years and then sold the Pioneer and Cerwin Vegas. You only need a few watts to power these speakers.

    Paul Klipsch and Roy Delgado have more than 20 speaker related patents. How many speaker related patents does Danny Richie have? The K-horn has been sold for 78 years; longer than any other speaker in the WORLD! You can listen to Klipsch speakers before you buy them. If you like them, buy them. If you don’t like what you hear, but what YOU like. I’m skeptical of people that continually bash competitor’s products. Klipsch is an iconic American brand that anyone can be proud of!

      Just because a company has been around a long time doesn't mean they are an elite brand. Bose has been around for a long time too, and they don't make high end speakers either. This brand has most of their product line mass produced in China, and they are super cheaply built. That's a fact. Is that something to be proud of? There is also nothing wrong with people wanting to turn them into a higher quality speaker.

    This is why Audiophile has become an ugly word. An audiophile is simply someone who CARES about audio quality, and puts some thought and effort into their system. I’ve been an audiophile for nearly 40 years, and recently acquired a pair of Cornwall 4s. They are shedding a light on music in a way I’ve never heard before (and not just loud). Horns (NOT these particular horns) are the best speaker design that exists in the world. But you need the right geometry, compression driver, and EQ. But the effects of increasing acoustical impedance and gaining free spl, playing lower with a smaller driver, pays incredible dividends in distortion and dynamics. Realism and precision. A properly designed and implemented horn has no inherent horn honk at all, ONLY all the benefits. Only potential downside, depending on your preference, is a partially/somewhat narrower dispersion pattern.
