    Thanks for this review, on the market for a new mower. I currently have the 41 pro and I’m done with it, hayter need to up there game, I have replaced the roller twice had about 4 chain covers, snapped one side or the bars , it’s just a sh*t machine , give a great cut in dry conditions but that’s all it has to offer, I think I’m going Honda next thanks for your review 👍🙌

      Hi, interesting thoughts as I use a 41 pro for a day a week and I've never had issues with the rollers, I guess you use it more and push it on paths, have you got the metal rollers on? Always worth lifting the roller of the floor when transporting on tarmac etc. New chain cover out with a metal strip so that should last a while longer. Snap a handlebar? Heard of one or two snapping but this suggests heavy handed use as I've never broken one in 12 years. There's no better small roller mower in the market, worth getting the revs tweaked esp for the wet and don't engage drive bar fully so it goes slowly and keep the bag clean.

    I've had the Hayter 41 for almost 10 years and its been very good.

    Ordered a new one today for my garden so will only be used by me once a week or so through summer. Will hopefully last me a good while with just one large-ish lawn to do.

    That’s a balanced review, Greg. It is a shame that Hayter don’t seem to take feedback from pro-users, especially from someone like you who has bought a lot of their products and are a big fan (well of the 41Pro and Toro Prostripe and other 4-wheelers. Like you say, the Hayter holds its own against Honda HRD/HRH rollers ( engine excluded) but it should be a lot better given it’s almost a brand new design. I love my 56pro but I only use it in the dry. Well done mate.

      Surely that’s just testament to how good the Honda pro lawnmowers are, great think about them aswell is you can literally rebuild every part of them if they ever break. They are pretty heavy though and not ideal for smaller lawns due to manoeuvrability. Good review though don’t really think any rotary mower is great if grass is soaking wet and thick, plastic box or not. I’m in the west of Scotland so have plenty of experience in the wet. Sometimes you just have to accept if it’s soaking wet and not too big a lawn it’s best just to double cut to get a good finish

    Gregg, we're contractors, been in the trade 40 years. Unlike you we prefer the 56pro to the prostripe but haho . Anyway needed a 19inch for smaller lawns, wanted bbc and variable speed so ended up with the Hayter 48 vs bbc assume it's not really any different in deck design than the 48 pro. It's absolutely useless in even damp conditions never mind wet. The chute is too narrow. Engine underpowered and why oh why are manufacturers still not using plastic boxes. We used it 6 times and went back to the 56 pro which is just too big for smaller lawns but it will collect reasonably well in the wet with revs turned up. Yes the 56 has issues, build up of grass on roller, this is the updated model. If you're listening Hayter why oh why a round scraper bar on the roller is it cheaper than square section steel ?!!! Like you Gregg Hayter do not listen to pro users ,emails just get a generic response

    • @GregsMowing
      @GregsMowing  5 місяців тому

      Hi Peter. It’s tough getting thoughts through to manufacturers. All have flaws. Yes the deck on the vs 48 is sake on the pro. Just different features. They have told me they tried a square bar in the back of the roller frame and trialed it side by side with the current one and had it assembled to the same specs as the previous harrier roller frame and there was no difference. Both clogged up in horrible wet grass. This has been improved with the new blade they make. I do use Oregon high lift blades which help and increase revs. Chute cant get much wider due to the gearbox. Pretty much same width as any other mower. Honda. Weibang etc. if you’ve been going 40 years hopefully you know tricks in the wet like not taking as much off and overlapping etc. Hayter do say it’s for fine finish lawns and not once a year cut mower. So hard to say what’s at fault. I use mine weekly cuts and ok I’m soaking wet there might be a slight built up but a scraper can sort in seconds and jetwashing the bag and blade sharp makes a huge difference.

    I serviced my Honda HRH536 Pro 4 wheeler today and noticed the year of manufacture 2001 😮 20 years old and it’s still running great, do yourselves a favour and get your self a Honda pro, the roller version if not looked after can have gearbox issues but all parts for the gearbox are available do it’s a serviceable part. On the Honda pro roller models if your not aware, when serviced the roller and gearbox should be removed cleaned and greased, I bet lots of places don’t do that when servicing them, that’s another reason they have issues.

    • @GregsMowing
      @GregsMowing  3 роки тому

      Problem is Luke - the Honda pro 21” roller isn’t a comparable machine to a 19” mower. collection performance is about the same. So probably best with the Hayter.

    It's so hard to settle on a mower right now that ticks all boxes! Am I overthinking this purchase?...going by the comparison videos in the field I was pretty much sold on getting a Hayter vs most other brands until I watched this! Toro pro stripe isn't available anywhere online. so what's the next best alternative? Just retried my Mountfield GCV160 after just over 3 years, never got on with it. Any advice would be really appreciated.

    Hayter.....they remind me of Rover in the 80's and 90's....playing on the Great British brand, with a 'have a go' experimental engineering approach, but we're the fools footing the bill! I think you're right, they don't do enough long term real world testing, just wait until customers kick-up a fuss, then patch it. I'm sticking with Stihl, Honda, Etesia and Toro. Having said that I've got an old Hayter Ambassador in the workshop that that I would never part with.

    • @nickwf70
      @nickwf70 3 роки тому

      Exactly right... Yet another great British company where the accountants and marketing people have far greater influence than the engineers. Build it cheap, make it look nice, sell the dream with a big mark up. Thing is I don't want to buy German and Japanese, I like my new hayter ❤️..

    Nice review. My 48 pro is a pain in the wet, the chute is just too small and the lack of airflow and bag angle just blocks constantly. I’ve a John Deere that suffers this too so my main mower in the wet is a faithful Etesia 46 which just keeps on going and they do listen to concerns from users.

      who cuts in the wet anyway?

  • @andrewkensett5863
    @andrewkensett5863 3 роки тому +1

    Nice review. The speed is the biggest problem for me (it’s too quick to bag effectively in the rain as too much grass is cut before there’s time to throw it into back of bag. I find feathering the drive helps significantly with bagging in the rain (give mower more time to throw grass to back of bag). Not sure if that effects the drive in longer term or not, works fine tho. 👍

    • @GregsMowing
      @GregsMowing  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks Andrew. Yes that technique does help. However it will put strain on the gearbox as it’s not built for that application. Bit like riding a clutch on a vehicle.
      Few people have said a prostripe 480 would be great. Ie Kawasaki and 3 speed gearbox. But sadly Hayter overlooked this and the 3 speed allegedly doesn’t fit the 48 deck.

      I literally spoke to my dealer about an hour ago and he said the same! Feathering will destroy the gearbox. Currently looking for a new mower and was considering this Hayter or the Stihl RM655 RS. Though the Stihl is more expensive, it does seem to fit my needs better!

  • @themowerman

    A common problem has always been with the hayter is that they don't cut that well in the wet.. compared to the Honda. your blade looks a bit battered.. that would help to cut better..yeah the side drives are in a class of these own.. I would like to see this one in 25 years time.. brass bushing over cheaper plastic all day long.. an expensive mower for a weekend warrior..

    • @GregsMowing
      @GregsMowing  3 роки тому +1

      Well Honda pro roller doesn’t bag any better in wet conditions. Got to see the Stihl’s. They do well in the wet and they have a box. Problem is they aren’t quick enough for many users. Yes blade probably a bit rough as it was at the end of the year. Should still collect though 🤔🤷🏻‍♂️

    Odd because yesterday I needed a new mower fast was looking at the pro 48 but decided it to buy a 41 autodrive having slagged off hayter for years! Shame they had no 41pro to try, I wonder how long the autodrive will last 😂. Its great so far. Basically the conclusion I came too for the 48 is it should have a gearbox. 3.2mph is too fast for negotiating obstacles or bumpy lawns.

      @@GregsMowing all the (plastic) gearing got destroyed. Other bits fell off too, but it was well used. I use Masport and Stiga now and they last for years. Masport has all metal gears and chain driven roller. Good idea about a tyre. I use two wooden strips that, when the mower us at its lowest cut, takes the roller and wheels off the trailer bed. It does bounce around a lot. I can't justify the cost of Hayters, I'm sure the name pumps up the price £200. Cheers.
