I'm surprised the world didn't detonate when these two got within 20 feet of each other. The sheer awesomeness could tear the fabric of space and time.
James Willmus Sheer awesomeness is right.......two immense talents, with great respect for each other and it shows.....they looked like they were having a ball.....
Johnny Cash was a truly remarkable country singer that embraced all forms of music and never belittled any artist no matter how different their music was from his.
This was my introduction to Gordon, I was home & sick & I saw a little picture in the paper saying GL would be a guest on the Johnny Cash Show that night & I asked my sister and she said he was good you should watch him. I became a life long fan and saw him about fifteen times in the late 60's, 70's & early 80's before I somehow strayed away and re-discovered him about 3 years ago and the truth is he is the best, a singer/songwriter who has always delivered, he's never phoned it in. The best!!!
Sadly ,today it is all too rare to see this kind of thing. Very unfortunate , music is meant to be shared and enjoyed by all , the good ole' days seem to be a thing of the past.
I'm from Orillia and was blessed to have met Gordon 6 years ago. I just got home from signing his book of condolence. His funeral and burial are happening in 2 days up here. The hometown boy never forgot were he came from. RIP Gordon Lightfoot 🙏✝️🕊🌹
I love both of these Legends and I've never heard them together before and I am blown away by how beautiful their voice is harmonized together there's a perfect Blend with the two of them and when they sing together they together they sound is beautiful as the Beatles best harmonies so sad they didn't do this more often or recording an entire album together it would have been a Smash Hit probably across all charts country, folk and pop... and if they threw a hard rock in TuneIn they would probably top the rock and roll charts would a number one song that is how confident I am that that would happen with these two guys working together that you can feel the magic between them and the mutual admiration what a shame this never went any further but I am thankful for that moment thanks for sharing it with us! I have to show my wife that she is the biggest Johnny Cash fan and loves Gordon Lightfoot as well and I know she never saw this she will melt! Peace, Bob M.
Gordon has been a life long friend in good and lesser times. Still have all his records. My kids know hij songs by hart, Gordon thanks. Fred from the Netherlands, former canadian emigrant
both gentlemen look so young in this video. i was born in 1964. i remember johnny cash from kindergarden. i probably heard a couple of gordon lightfoot songs in grade school. it wasn't until the wreck of the edmund fitzgerald that put gordon lightfoot on my radar. i'm from the upper peninsula of michigan. it seemed like when gordon lightfoot wrote the song "the wreck of the edmund fitzgerald", it endured him to all of us yoopers (people from the upper peninsula of michigan.). ever since then, i started listening to his songs. he has a lot of songs that i like. may he rest in peace.
There are 100's of CanAm collaborations at all sorts of levels every day. Related nations work together all the time. I must admit this is the most beautiful example of all times. It brings tears of joys every time I hear it. Rest is peace to the two of you fellows. Regards X
I’ve always liked this catchy tune and I’ve heard Waylon perform it many times but I wasn’t aware that Gordon had written it. He definitely wrote a bunch of classics.
He later realised what the song was saying and he quit singing it. He said it was the most chauvinistic song he ever wrote and did not like the guy he was when he wrote it. "I was married at the time, and it was a damn poor song to write when you’re married to somebody. I learned a lesson from that, because after I sang that song for a while, I asked myself, ‘What am I saying?!’ Even long after I was divorced and separated and she’d gone her way and I’d gone mine, I would sing this song and think, Geez. How did she ever put up with this? I stopped singing it."
My mother recorded this back when Johnny Cash had a summer TV show. I always loved Johnny Cash but really fell in love with Gordon Lightfoot as a result of this show. And this is the cool part: I met Gordon Lightfoot (but really wasn't supposed to) and got the opportunity to tell him how I came to know and love his music. He was a little taken aback but realized I was a polite fan and just wanted to say thanks 😊.
This is awesome! Gordon Lightfoot and Johnny Cash are my Grandpa's two favorite artists of all time! He says Gordon Lightfoot is his favorite artist, and Johnny Cash is his second favorite artist. He really loves both artists alot!
I love both these singers! I think they're cute together! I have to admit I listened to Johnny cash all my life, and discover Gordon Lightfoot in my teens. My boyfriend and I sang his songs together! God bless him, h died in a bicycle accident on the Natchez trace. I miss him awfully bad.31 year friendship. First love.
Two legends performing together on one stage. The world needs more of this kind of music and more of these kind of singers. By that i mean ones who can actually sing
@alan4sure may I suggest the tribute to him by Rick Beato. He did an indepth video of If You Could Read My Mind. And did a tribute to him, saying he was the perfect songwriter.
Great old stuff. Takes me back to my Childhood watching them on T.V. when we still had a black and white set eating a Root beer float and Apple pie on Sunday night after dinner. Good family time. 😁
Echo to worry about the thumbs-down anymore cuz little crybabies took it out and they didn't want the feelings to get hurt now we get it everybody gets a trophy
Wow thanks for posting this ! Johnny cash had a lot of great ones on his show. Probably little did he know at the time that this would be the greatest.
A national treasure of Canada and a national treasure of the USA. Doesn't get any better.
I agree.
..and here I'm thinking Europeans
Truly the best of both. Growing up in Michigan, Gordon was such a huge part of the musical landscape. He will be missed.
100% correct
Proud Canadian here!
I'm surprised the world didn't detonate when these two got within 20 feet of each other. The sheer awesomeness could tear the fabric of space and time.
I second that emotion.
everyone was worried about the atomic bomb igniting the atmosphere....this is much more dangerous....what a way to go, though:)
James Willmus Sheer awesomeness is right.......two immense talents, with great respect for each other and it shows.....they looked like they were having a ball.....
James Willmus Cash and Lightfoot doesn't get much better than that. Gordon Lightfoot is canada's Johnny Cash and bob Dylan
Jerret Barker Neil is wonderful of course but Gord is better even.
Gordon Lightfoot just played for the country on Canada 🇨🇦 Day, July 1st, in front of his home. A living legend 😀
that's putting it mildly. One tough cookie
RIP
🤠

and Lightfoot, had the best natural singing voices.
Love Anne Murray too

The best of Canada and the best of the USA. This is a very special moment in musical history.
Canadians and Americans...
The best friends ever
Gordon Lightfoot harmonizing to his own song! How cool!!!
One of the greatest Canadian and one of the greatest Americans join together.
We just lost Gord and i can't believe Johnny's been gone for twenty years.
Both are legends, but Lightfoot has always been like my best friend through the hard times and good times with the ladies. A true music miracle.
Patrick Henry: Through broken hearts and all. :)
You can really tell by their faces... These guys admire each other's work. Great clip. 👍
Those were the days my friends, never to be duplucated again, listen to these 2,great artists
Wow, this is great. Never heard Gordon sing harmonies like that before. Real music.
I don’t know why Gordon never did duets on albums or tv performance before. Awesome job Gordon and Johnny did together.
One Canadian legend and one American legend Awesome
How lucky were we to have two voices of this magnitude together?
A Canadian icon sings with an American classic. Love it.
Sadly ,today it is all too rare to see this kind of thing. Very unfortunate , music is meant to be shared and enjoyed by all , the good ole' days seem to be a thing of the past.
Two of the GREATEST song writers of our time.
Except Johnny Cash wasn't a song writer.
Johnny Cash and Gordon Lighfoot reunited in heaven 🙏🙏🙏🙏

OMG! This is PRICELESS! And the way they just wrasseled & messed around like they might have not been on a show, just playing in a basement somewhere.
Pre Sundown. What a talented singer-songwriter. Unfortunately they don't make em like that anymore.
God rest both their souls. Amazing, talented artists who blessed multiple generations with their incredible music.
Bob Dylan said "when Gordon started singing a song, you never wanted it to end"
R.I.P. to both of them.
Awesome film clip!! I had no idea this treasure existed.
What a treasure. Two amazing artists that sounded great together.
They do.

Nice. Cheers from Montreal
Neither will ever be replaced. I'm a Lightfoot fan all the way.
This is what TV was like?! I can't stand today's Idol garbage!
This is like heaven. All you need is Buddy Holly to show up and high-five Cash...

It doesn't sound like Gordon's style either. It sounded more American country style.
So glad YT decided to plop this video into my feed at this time. RIP Gordon and Johnny.

Jonny's gone but by God; Gordon Lightfoot just finished up his north American tour in 2018 Wow! talk about staying power!

Two awesome artists together... and you can see the joy in their faces performing together
Just over 30 years later Cash covered "If You Could Read My Mind"... it's different than Gord's, but man is it ever powerful.
If you Could Read My Mind is one of the most covered songs so no surprise there.
