Sega saturn is probably the most underrated console in history. So many good japanese games on it that never came to the west. Its my favorite system to emulate on my steam deck
Dreamcast is so doable also (special licensing aside). Dreamcast can already be emulated full speed with basic ARM chips. And a $10 128GB SD card could fit +100 GD-ROM images.
I had a thought where if Sega made a Master System mini, it would be able to play Game Gear cartridges. It would be neat, but I doubt they’d do it though.
The one thing that sticks out about that mini Saturn is that it has two USB ports in the center and two original Saturn controller ports on each side of the USB ports. If that is real, that is really awesome.

I bet you that is just a shell with a pi board under it more or less , what will really be the pusher will be the 3D games on Saturn if they can run well and the Capcom / SNK extra ram based games

I asked one of the clerks when it would go on sale rather jokingly and he said it was a proof of concept and represents what could go on sale in the future. This particular console had an fpga inside and a daughter board for controllers and function buttons. It took either usb controllers and original controllers. The guy demoed it for my friend and I.
I miss the old Sega and really hope we get a Saturn mini in the future.i know most of the younger generation hasn't experienced this system from Sega,but I was there the day it released for 400$.so I have some good memories with this little gem.if this dream comes true,let's hope it's loaded with some good titles that really show the strength of this 2D monster!

Same! I have a very basic laptop and can emulate up to PS2/Gamecube games. But all the Saturn emulators can’t work. If they do a Saturn mini, and get games from Capcom and SNK, imma get that day 1 haha.
Hyperkin has almost no social media presence or public forum. They just occasionally show us mock ups and prototypes that almost never come to fruition. I mean if they come out with an FPGA console that’s preconfigured to run everything I’d be interested, but considering they didn’t allow you to even load roms onto the Retron 5, I can’t imagine that happening unless it’s something like the failed Polymega.

I mean the Genesis mnis were great but all or most of the games on there can be emulated on just about anything or have been available on various compilations. Saturn and Dreamcast games are tougher to emulate and SEGA hasn't offered much in the way of compilations for these consoles.

Only problem with all this is that the parts to build a mister alone are nearly 300 dollars these days. To make a commercial product and license the code you couldn't sell it for less than grand. It's destined to fail.
What I wonder about is, does a more dedicated hardware emulator outperform the newer pi , or even orange pi s that have over 4 gb ram , and quad cores. my guess is the two methods will come close .
My money is that a Mister FPGA is inside of that shell. Saturn emulation is a thing on Mister, but it’s way in beta at this point. I’d bet they just used the Saturn core.
FPGA usually aim for accuracy. For early systems they are effectively identical clones (within the margin of error between original units and revisions). For 8/16-bit generations FPGA is king. Unless you're the kind of person who likes playing 16-bit games with algorithmic scaling then nothing beats FPGA for those earlier consoles/machines. Emulators can be almost as accurate however as they also have far more power they can offer something else: massive improvements. I personally prefer emulators for the 3D systems as they can be rendered at high resolutions and have all sorts of other cool improvements made.
Well this is ironic I just picked up another SEGA SATURN Back in May, I haven't played it in eight years because I got rid of the other one and yes I did miss it. How ironic!

I'm assuming the USB port in the front is there own USB Saturn controller and you can use original controllers as well with the other ports.

1:25 SOtN's 2D visuals were primarly designed with PS1 hardware in mind and as a result, the Saturn could not render the game as it was supposed to.
