    I got a male German Shepherd (somebody didn't want it and was giving it away at 7months) I've never owned a dog or been brought up around them. I knew I had a massive responsibility to train and socialise him, (previous owner did nothing). I couldn't afford training, so I've trained him from watching these guys and Will Atherton. Don't blow my own trumpet often but he's 18mth now and amazing, he goes on train, bus, off lead. He's great with people and dogs.
    It's all thanks to these guys.
    Thank you, I've got a great dog thanks to you lot.

    The step back with the left foot and an energetic "Yes" is critical here. So many people I've taught this will either stand motionless and try luring the dog in position with just their arms or won't bring the energy to entice the dog to move with the owner.
    Great video!!

    Thanks mate very helpful. I'll try this out but when my puppy sees treats he automatically sits down and won't move and muscle until I say break, even when I encourage him to come froward like you do in the video he won't move 😂I'll try this with the lead and keep going

    Any tips for puppies (12wk Staffy girl?)
    Can get her to walk in heel on lead but only for a treat, she has no idea what the word means just when she sees the treat she’s there and will follow in heel,
    Hard with her being so small to maintain that position with a treat walking down the street half bent over!😂

      I swear it’s like my shepherd interprets a “heel” as a “sit and eat” hopefully he grows into the commands soon 😂

  • @shephand3087
    @shephand3087 9 місяців тому +1

    Oh he knows what heel means it’s actually the only command my puppy knows without me using my hand or finger to demonstrate that command. Sometimes he chooses to just not listen especially on walks. 😂😂

    So we got that.. he will heal with a treat but he also eats my fingers.. so I'm gonna try a tube of treat and squeeze a bit at a time. I'm also struggling to get this heal once the treat is removed.

      10-15 minutes sessions , multiple times a day. Instead of feeding from a bowl, hand feed their meals while training. Works wonders

    Mhhh is it possible that i ruined my heel command? Do i need a new Word? Or is it just necessary that i train it your propper way and just change the body movement and stick to the word heel?

    What do I do if my dog is more interested in absolutely destroying my hand for the treat? She won't follow the treat, she'll just try to bite it straight out my hand and if it moves to far she stops. It's very frustrating but adorable, and I don't know what to do.

    • @judyives1832
      @judyives1832 5 місяців тому

      This is the very first thing you need to teach your puppy. It’s a foundation for training and is often called “no mugging the hand”. You put a treat in your hand and close your fingers over it. Show it to your puppy, let him sniff and lick your hand etc but do not allow him to get the treat. In a minute or two he will be puzzled and back off a little. Immediately click or mark that with a “yes!” And give it to him. Do this multiple times a day until he understands that he must WAIT to be given a treat, he can’t just take it. Continue to add time that the puppy waits before getting the treat. The puppy soon learns to control himself around food. Next you will add distance, duration and distractions and build that first behaviour into excellent “leave it” and “take it” cues
      Dogs can learn this “premark principle” or “grammas rule” (if I eat my peas I will get ice cream”). Dogs can learn very well that in order to get a reward they must control their behavior. But this is a behavior that must be taught because it goes against their instinct to grab prey quickly before it gets away. The puppy isn’t being bad by going after your hand, it’s just following its instinct until you’ve taught it a different way of acting.

    Please help! My dog gets bored with treats, after about 4 or 5, and is not interested in a ball. Praise is all I have but she actually does not like physical contact (she was an adult when we adopted her so not sure why she avoids being cuddled or pet. Belly rubs is what she loves). She likes to chase and be chased, so it's hard to reward her.
    She's great on a leash, and wel behaved, but I'd like to teach her more. Where do we go from here?

    • @djdup3819
      @djdup3819 5 місяців тому

      Don’t free feed her. Use kibble in the morning to train. Get a professional dog trainer for one hour. You are the source of food. She thinks she is able to get her way because she does, because food is just there magically(if that’s the case). Know and teach her you are the source of food. Instill that in her.

    Lol!!! This is not how you do it, dude has been watching to many videos. His little trick works with one dog but not all dogs. Mate you need more tools in your toolbox, break down your positions before you try and teach the heel. This dog lacks forward motivation into the heel. Remember heel position is not a movement, if your dog doesn’t know the position don’t take a step forward.
