I really hope you read this comment fella. I found a dog, chip read, abandoned. I have 2 rescue cats. He had no training, pulled me down the road reacted to every dog it saw. With your videos he's not been put to sleep after a short stay in kennels, he now walks to heel, he stays when told, and he ignores the cats in our house like they are not even there. Thank you for your videos. Thank you so much.

Gave my daughter your puppy course for Christmas and the change is incredible. The 'scatter puppy' has gone, and been replaced by a happy calm puppy (still abit inquisitive at time) that is no longer anxious about what is expected of him. I never would have thought that by training a dog you relieve the dog of stress.

Will your videos are absolute god sends. They are invaluable to a large strong breed dog owner. My Sasha was a female Rott who I was lucky to have for 9 years before she succumbed to Osteosarcoma she left and took my heart with her but I know I didnt train her properly. She was a puller and ijumper. It took me 8 months before I could bring myself to get another Rott. My breeder has a female for me she is 5 weeks old today. I will be getting her in 3-4 more weeks. I'm not going to make the same mistakes
Ive been watching all your videos and I know I will be a confident and consistent dog owner this time around. I just love this breed they are the most affectionate and protective dogs I ever owned. Thank You for sharing your knowledge with me.

Thank you Will, you saved my sanity, and probably my marriage.
About six weeks ago, we adopted a 10 month old German shepherd cross bitch, from our Vets (I am a Brit Expat living in Colombia), we knew very little of her history, other than she and her sister had been abandoned, and she was with her sister when she was killed by a car.
Nala is a loving dog, but on the lead she was a 'She Devil', I'm similar size to you, I was having trouble holding her, and she tried to attack anything that came near us, animal, pedestrian, vehicle. I was at my wits end, having had dogs man and boy, now 65yrs, so decided to research YT, and found your channel. As a result I tried a slip leash, which made no difference, then came upon this video, I was one of those who had always thought pinch collars were cruel, but on watching you decided to give it a go. The collar arrived last week, the first day, I let her wear it around the house to get used to it, she wasn't bothered, day two our first walk, a miracle in every sense of the word, jumped at two motorcycles, realised her mistake, and has improved daily. She now walks to heel, ignores all traffic, foot and vehicular, and is nothing short of an Angel, you are indeed the Messiah 😂
Nala thanks you, she now gets excited when the pinch collar comes out!

@@wendystewart5665 You can set up a loop of leash over one of their front legs right up near the top of their leg. Then when they pull, that leg lifts up and they are pulled off balance and immediately lose their pulling strength. It doesn't hurt them but being off balance is unpleasant so they stop doing it.
I never did the treat thing but if you are and they ignore the treats, I'd let them get a bit hungrier before training (and no- not starving them- just make sure they are actually hungry so train them just before they were due to eat).

I feel like a part of this training process is missing: What should the handler be doing when the dog is not heeling properly with positive reinforcement? For example, dog is walking nicely but then pulls to smell something or wants to check out another dog passing by? What corrections should be used? Yanking on the lead? Shouting, "No!" leading back to heel with treats?

    • @Smartdoggy
      @Smartdoggy Місяць тому

That's a good point. I would try to get the dog's attention somehow, make myself really interesting, you know, but I wouldn't shout "no". I think a little tug on the lead would be fine, but no hard yanking. If your dog is food motivated, obviously using treats would help, or if he's more play oriented, use his favourite toy. That's my personal opinion, I'm not a dog trainer.

Hey, I am in the same boat as you. There are plenty of videos out there about teaching your dog to “work” such as heel walking and then how to switch them off and be a dog for a bit using release commands like “freedom” or “break”. It’s important to give them a break during training it does help them stay focused.

I have a female Doberman and she is is 5 months and already 20kgs of muscle! She can loose lead walk and doesn’t really pull, but it’s not shaped into a nice heel yet as her pace is always adjusting. The annoying thing is when I praise her for being in a good heel position she then speeds up and gets about a foot or so in front. 😂 it’s still a loose lead but it now means she can cut in front of me if someone walks by etc. I think a lot of her problem is fear. I notice her hairs all stood up down her spine which makes her walk faster and start to pay less attention to basic commands she knows.
I do walk confidently with her and don’t baby talk her when she is notably scared. I am scratching my head on the best approach to work through this behaviour as it can’t be fun for her if she is on high alert all the time 😢
Walks in the dark are the worst for this.
Great vids. I have bought some of the Fenrir stuff too. Keep up the good work 👍🏻

Basically, no matter how many times it seems I tell my dog "Keava turn" and then I turn, she won't look at me. She doesn't seem to care about being tugged as long as she can smell or see whatever she wants. But there have been only a handful of cases where she knew to turn, so perhaps it's just going to be a long road till she understands to look at me.

Are these collars safe for puppies? My pup is 18 weeks old and I can’t get him to stop pulling no matter how much positive reinforcement I give for ‘checking in’.

My gsd puppy doesn't hate the collar but he isn't excited when we get it our. But he walks so well with it, and then with a regular collar he's good for a bit until he realizes he has free reign with no reinforcement lol So am I really training him to walk well or walk well with this tool only?

How many times a day should we be repeating this training?

Great video, makes so much sense. My 5-year-old fox lab has become fearful of traffic, will a slip lead help?

What do I do if my puppy doesn’t want to walk, he kinda just stands his ground and I only get him to walk if I take out a treat, and I’m worried that I’ve now rewarded the wrong behavior resulting in more pulling.
When he walks, he walks rly well, but then get distracted and then we’re off with the pulling again.
So my question is, do I then pull abit and kinda force him to walk then focus on bringing his attention to me and go from there or is there another way I can make him more comfortable with the leash so that he’ll pull less in the first place?

Hi will love the videos, I recently had a 9mth old male mali and I couldn't get him to walk good which I've no idea how as I keep this breed but I honestly couldn't get him to do anything yet I can with my other 2 malis. Like you and your friend jason I love my dogs but this pup maybe had a bad up bringing yet I tried and tried with him but I still couldn't get him to be good but he loved everyone wasnt nasty for a mali he was harmless never aggressive to anyone.

Do you have any videos in regards to getting a dog to even walk? I just got an english bulldog puppy, she hates being on a leash, is very stubborn and doesn't want to walk at all. Pulling isn't even an issue, she just wants to sit down and not move.

Hi, so I got my dog to heel for the most part and he’ll stay in a heel until I release him. But when another dog walks by he will run across my body or behind me, pulling me in any direction. Even if I have steak in my hand he ignores my food goes for the dog I have a prong collar on him but I think it’s a little loose. If I take off another link I think it’s to tight. How tight should it be, and what should I do if he doesn’t care for food?

OK but will she regress as soon as you use a regular collar? Or is she stuck with a prong for life?

The prong introduces the dog to what is desired behavior via redirection, it removes any reward they recieved previously ( its fun to jump and pull, even if being choked ), allowing the handler to wean the dog to something like a slip lead, then eventually to a regular harness leash if desired. Dogs I train are usually on the prong for about two weeks, the crazy idea for most people who are used to a crazy lunging dog, is that dog really wants to do good but just doesn't know what good is yet. So once introduced to it, will happily do so without the training gear. A good dog trainer or handler will use the prong exactly as what it was designed to be, a temporary training tool.
