With appearance of the R12, many believed it would spell the demise of R8. However, that may not be the case. R8 is still a good unit with a lot to offer folks who record at home or on the go, and have a workflow that requires a more “hands on” device. I wanted to share the similarities, but focus primarily on the differences between these sibling units to better understand why one might choose one as opposed to the other. I hope this information serves useful.
Question, if I have an instrumental that I want to rap over, can I upload the instrumental track from my phone to the zoom r8?
@CLifemusic Yes. However, in order to do so, you have to either upload the backing track file to the SD card through an external card reader. Or, put the file onto the SD card with a pc. The third way would be to use your phone's aux output to record into the r8 directly. You can set your tempo and record like that, but it gets a bit wonky doing it like that
@@thecolorcomputer I just ordered my zoom r8 ,can you to a basic or begginners tutorial on how to mix vocals? (I do rap, poetry and sing a little)
@CLifemusic I might try to do that if I get the time! But, to be honest, don't hold your breath. There are *some* videos on here that go over some basics, but you might want to dig into the effects section once you get the r8 to find a good vocal chain to use as a jumping off point. Just my 2 cents 😁👍
The R12 could have had the same size screen as the R20 by expanding the R12 screen to the left and moving the zoom logo to the right where input 2 area has wasted space, and expanding the screen downward a little toward the channel sliders and reducing the height of the silk screened 1 thru 8 indicators stamps. Missing external mics, punch in/out, AB Repeat. Again Lazy Goofy Engineering.
R8 for me. More hardware buttons and can be bought for $100*second hand.
The R8, R16, R24 jog wheel will go bad and become erratic. The plastic on the directional selection pad will break over time. The sliders will become erratic as well. I have owned 6 of the the R8s and they have all failed in these areas. The newer R series have a lot of missing functions such as A-B repeat punch in/out etc.....goofy engineering.
I stick to the R8 =)
Nice video thanks for it I decided to get the r-12 because it was available on zzounds with installments of $50 payments so I figured it was a pretty nice deal. I'm a MPC kind of a beat maker and I really like just doing everything on the fly on hardware so it's really nice not having to touch computer at all
this helped out so much since r12 seems near unavailable currently. i think i get the r8 for now since it seems enough but also less of a screen orientated workflow which is kinda why i look into getting one of these things to begin with
Thanks for watching and sharing. 👍🏿
I have the R8, and I have to say, it is extremely powerful. It's a bit weird as far as initial workflow if you're used to DAWs. However, once you learn it, there's almost nothing you can't do with it. Built-in mics, effects, and various audio file support make it very useful. Although, the R12 seems great if you don't need a built-in mic. Probably has better sounding effects as well, since it's a newer unit.
@@thecolorcomputer thanks for ur answer. i used r8 for a while now and im fine, its actually quite easy for me since i made experimental music for a long while and often didnt use daws so it somewhat more intuitive
for setting up my tracks its great while i mix and put effects on in reaper.
I doubt the R12 (twelve what?) will be as huge a success for ZOOM as the R8. A touch display less than half the size of your average smartphone display is no adequate replacement for the merrily tactile buttons and knobs on the R8. User reviews in online shops also seem to favour the R8 over its successor. A pity ZOOM didn't keep both devices in production. A second hand R8 sells at roughly one third of the price of a new R12, btw.
As for your video's audio: What did you record it through/on? The same hardware for all takes? Did you do any processing in post? Just wondering ...
Zoom is going to "Chrysler" itself our of business by over-thinking ! The R8 is all we need.
R8 is the best!
I wondered how is the latency if using R8 as an interface?
You're THE MAN! Thank you for the videos.
Thanks for all this amazing review, just what I needed!! ...
By the way, could you tell me if I can connect the Zoom R12 to a power bank, in addition to being able to use it with batteries?
Yes, you can connect it using a AC adapter: ZOOM AD-17 (5V/1.0A). Thanks for watching.
If I need to connect the Zoom R8 into my mixer for singing and playing along to my songs , do I use unbalanced or balanced leads into my mixer's stereo channel ? So I can sing and play guitar over.Thank you for any advice.
Great presentation! Are the pre amps on the R12 better or about the same than pre amps on the R8? Thank you.
R12 has the same pre-amps as R-20, witch Zoom says are some of their best to date. Thanks for watching, its appreciated.
I like the R8 having the 8 percussion pads. Too bad it's been discontiniued.
Thank you for this very detailed comparison...👍👌
R8 all day long.
And all night long.
Thanks for the comprehensive analysis. I have subscribed!
Thanks for watching and for your support. It's appreciated.
I must say you can use the R 8 and R 12 in your vehicle via power from the usb in your vehicle for those idea mixes or tailgate parties the R8 and R12 are cool, stereo to mono input 1 on the R8 and R12, Mic input to R8 and R12 along with my Denon DJ Prime Go and the party is on 🎉🎉🎉🎉
thank you for the review. i’m looking for a standalone device for running backing track with click and routing it to PA and band member with different mix (no click track on PA). which one better for running backing track with band performance?
What's the significance in the difference in preamps? What are the preanos for?
Preamps amplify low level signals to line levels. R12 has less distortion at higher gain levels. I hope this helps. Thanks for watching. 👍🏿
@@PowercoatMusic thanks a lot I appreciate the info I am about to buy the zoom R8 I do Christian rap and I do poetry I'm thinking about doing audiobook this year so I need something to record with.
one more question , once I start recording is there somewhere where I could take a short course on learning how to mix vocals?
Also, can I sample music with the r8?
Thanks for taking the time to do this video, it helped a lot.
Thanks for watching. 👍🏿
Does the R12 have a fully programmable drum machine on board?
No. R12 includes rhythm loops for many different genres (Pop Rock, Hard Rock, Funk Rock, etc.). By setting the track type to rhythm, drum patterns and other rhythm loops can be assigned to it as needed and played back. Thanks for watching. 👍🏿
It does. It includes one drum kit. The only downside is, it can only be triggered using an external midi keyboard or on the unit itself, if you use the integrated step sequencer
Greetings, is the punch in and out of the zoom r12 similar to the Tascam dp-008ex?
It don't have punch in out.
Excellent!! Thank you!
Thanks for watching.
Thank you.
You're most welcome. Thanks for watching.
Is the R12 better than the R20
R12 is an 8-track version of the R20 16-track. Based on what you need, it may be a better unit for you specifically. That's why it's important to know what you require. Thanks for watching. 👍🏿
@@PowercoatMusic and thank you for always responding
Good Video
Thanks for watching. 👍🏿
Just bought an R8 mainly for the drums and features used at a lower price
Nice job. Thanks for watching.
