He used the extreme bass side of the tone controls with his distortion and ovrrdrive pedals. when he used those pedals he would roll it all the way bass side and the pedals created a new high end. He said in a Guitar Player interview that when he arrived at this wiring it was intentional for that and that they essentially acted like an on off switches. wide open and the bass resonance when the cap is solo with no resistance. Too Bad Eastwood cheaped out and used a chinese buffer.
11:50 The switches are wired for Parrallel OR Series connection of the humbuckers. Assuming they are regular 2 position DPDT switches, there would be no split coil tones available.
Doug Irwin's wiring diagram for Wolf shows the switches being for Parallel/series, I feel like everyone just talks about humbucker(noone mentions the style of wiring)/coil split for jerry's guitar switches, but it's really that parallel wiring in my opinion that brings some of that sweet jerry magic. I've got 3 position switches in my wolf guitar so I have parallel/series/coil split for each of the Super 2's, the parallel and coil split both sound really similar but the parallel just has a certain jangly top end sweetness that the coil split does not have. It would make me happy if the eastwood Jerry guitars have parallel/series cause they would be one of the few people to get it right
I used to do basic factory wiring on electric guitars. Could never do " that wiring." Can't we just do like " Keith." Plug a Tele' into an amp and go? lol....
It is a great guitar and definitely has the pickups to get that Jerry thing. If that is what you are looking for I don't think you will be disappointed. I know I will never have the cash to buy one of the high end luthier made replicas and this scratched that itch for me quite nicely. Let us know what you think if you pick one up!
Just for reference, Jerry used Dimarzio Super Distortions/Duel Sounds (same basic pickup but 2 versus 4 wire versions). I don't recall the single coils off of the top of my head (though I have one in a box if I wasn't too lazy to go look lol), but either way, yes, he used fairly hot pickups particularly for the time period when Tiger was built. If you wanted to know on amps, Twin Reverb heads (Silver face) but using just the preamp, McIntosh power amp (yes, HiFi amp), JBL D/K120's I think it was speakers (where the ice picks to the ears grow if you're not careful) and the amps while I think fairly stock in terms of the design were upgraded with a lot of military spec components (think very low tolerance resistors/capacitors) for again a fairly HiFi signature. A lot of the punch in his sound was the pickups, HiFi amp, and the JBL's which are extremely precise and rather unforgiving as well. That and the OBEL giving the constant feed to his fx on that front.
Oh, and I think what you want from the OBEL is unity with it in or out versus a boost (though you can use it that way). The point of the OBEL is to get a constant feed to the fx so that for instance with the envelope filter once you dial that in you can turn up or down on the guitar and it will react the same because the signal to it doesn't change (it comes before the guitar volume control).
@@ezm69 Jerry and the rest of them definitely spent a lot of time on quality sound. People don’t realize how much they contributed to live sound in general. His rig definitely sounded great. Agreed on the OBEL thing. Although definitely not experts we tried to drive that point home in the OBEL video we did. Keep the quack when you roll the volume back!
@@PJandtheBeard Jerry and the band definitely don't get enough credit for "trying stuff" to solve real sound and gear problems. The OBEL is definitely a solution to a real problem (and the quack is absolutely the poster child for it). I use the Micro QTron and without the OEBL it's set for a specific guitar and pickup at 10 with VERY little room to move the volume before you lose it. But it is glorious when it's right! 🤠 I can't wait to see what you think of some of the envelope filter options as I'm well down that rabbit hole myself!
@@ezm69 we definitely have some great ones in. We have recorded three now. Even after playing with them for years it has a pretty daunting task. I always wished jerry played with more overdrive. I love the dead's music but his guitar playing was so plinky and boring in my opinion, and he got really sloppy when the heroin entered the picture. It's really a shame.
I always thought he made the tone work for him. I wouldn't want to play that clean though for sure. I honestly understand how he got his sound much better after playing with this guitar. We need to plug it into a 100 Watt amp sometimes. It pushes the little 22 Watt Tyler too much.
The Dead's 70's era is full of distorted Jerry. He wasn't always pristine and clean, though that is most people's assumption. It was mine for the longest time as well!

Just got mine in today. It's absolutely phenomenal!
TRY PUTTING THE CAMERA ON THE GUITAR
I’ll inform the camera crew… :)
Using 43 wire allows more but smaller wire which seems scooped with lots of high end,but can do the Garcia clean perfectly.
