    When friends want to start fishkeeping I always recommend Emperor Tetras - they really are pretty bomb proof, and I always have self-bred fish to give them. Then with no expertise the new fishkeepers have babies of their own which really encourages them in their new hobby. Such a great and forgiving fish.

    I don't underatand why emperor tetra is not popular. The fish has everything you want: color, hardiness, inexpensive, breeding, community friendly, size (they are bigger than normal tetra but they still pretty much tetra size) It is super hard in my area to find them, just got 15 of them from a special seller for 2$ each and they are max size.

    I'm just in love with your fish tanks.. they're so beautiful, unique and interesting! And I'm really liking these little guys! I can just imagine how happy and healthy your aquarium and fish must be... This is one of the tanks you have running with the reverse flow UG? It's funny, I tried to mention your system around with running the slow steady trickle into and under the substrate and of course all I heard was you don't want to undergravel filter in your planted tank...I can see how it works by looking at your beautiful tanks.. having healthy and breeding fish is just an added bonus... Unless of course they take over the world 😂😂 maybe that's why they're called "emperor" Tetras👍😁🐟🌿🌱

      Back in the 1980's, a German Aquarist company called DUPLA showcased "The Optimal Aquarium" with 12 Golden principles of a planted tank. One of those was slow, heated water circulation in the substrate, which they achieved using cable heating in a base of Laterite clay. Eheim in response, came up with their reverse flow undergravel system joined up to their canister filter, to replicate the DUPLA results. I've used Eheim for 35 years with great success :)

    I had a betta in a 48 gallon tank with 6 emperor tetras; The tetras nipped and ripped all the betta's fins. I am surprised to see this tank with a betta and emperors coexisting.

    • @AussieAquatic
      @AussieAquatic  Рік тому +1

      Bettas do have a range of personality types from docile to aggressive, some can be meek and mild and others take no prisoners. In this case the Bettas were born and grew up in the tank with the Emperors already there.

    So clean substrate with so much fish! How often to you siphon if you do? It's almost no result on cleanness with weekly gravel vacuuming, eh. Lots of work, still dirty, fully dirty by next cleaning.

    • @AussieAquatic
      @AussieAquatic  Рік тому

      This is a great question!!
      I don't gravel vacuum.
      I do 20% water changes each week.
      This tank has 2 Eheim canister filters which pick up the solid wastes for me, and they get a rinse every 3 months to remove the dirt.
      I grow as many live plants as I can to further remove fish wastes.
      This is how I keep and enjoy having an aquarium in my living room as a beautiful display :)

  • @SpiritAquatics
    @SpiritAquatics 4 роки тому +1

    Wow they bred like Guppies haha. The betta doesn't seem to like them at all 😂. Also you have a female betta in with the male 😲 do they get along? Everywhere on the Internet says it's a bad idea to keep them together.
    New sub btw

    • @AussieAquatic
      @AussieAquatic  4 роки тому +2

      The tetras own the tank now, which the Bettas think is very unfair.
      As tanks get bigger, the Bettas will share territory quite happily, as long as they have their own personal space.
      These are actually 3 males ua-cam.com/video/LrwJXmQpxik/v-deo.html

    Excuse my comment on your other video! You should add some new genetics to your breeding emperor tetras, swap the grown fry with another hobbyist to further diversify a healthy gene pool.
    If we, as hobbyists, continue to swap fry from different spawns with each other, we can maintain a healthy vigorous fish for many years of come.

    • @AussieAquatic
      @AussieAquatic  2 роки тому +1

      Very true.
      In my case I regularly take fish out and give them to my LFS for store credit.
      I am reducing my Emperor tetras now and letting the Endlers livebearers take over for a different look in the tank.
      Over the years, I keep different combinations of fish.
