Ya there’s def something to be said abt that! Do what you do best and if your channel is any good that means you’re a likable guy and people enjoy watching you be you! That’s what makes a good channel, when someone is enjoying their life while doing something interesting!
TO remove the tint from the rear window, here's what I did with one of my cars with a rear defroster: I bought a cheap steam machine (in the same section as the clothes irons) and some plastic scrapers from Walmart. I also laid some shop towels at the base of the rear glass and the package tray and started heating the tint up with steam. Once the tint started bubbling up, it came off in sizeable chunks as I scraped the glass gently. This process did take some time and it was messy to deal with, but the results are worth it!
Jepp, thats where I would have gone with my comment aswell. Steam or even pure boiling water puring over it helps losing in up. Although I can't tell wether your defrost stays on. Here is a link: ua-cam.com/video/IY3WaUny3W0/v-deo.html
I was going to suggest this as the best method, makes the tints softer and more pliable. Even the steam will rehydrate the next bit to come off. But that you've done this and proven it's an effective method is excellent!
Always been routing for Mike. As a young Audi technician, I feel similar to how Hoovie(Tyler) introduced his backstory. He is an honest, hardworking, transparent mechanic, that's hard to come by. Also similar to Wizard who made the excellent decision to hire Magic Mike!
Mine is a 1998 SLK 230. I changed out those headlights for clear ones with the Angel Eyes. The car looks so much better and up-to-date. Good first post, Magic Mike!
Tip on tint that somebody mentioned to me. Part of a new tint install service is removing old tint. If you wanted tinted still, removing the old tint might be somebody else’s problem :) A steamer and citrus cleaner can help with removal as well. Glad to be here and looking forward to some good old wrenching content!
Keep the AMG!!! Would love to see a series of the repairs and upgrades!!! Also, use a heat gun and Goo-gone to remove the rear tint!!! Looking forward to more content!!!
I'd have a professional tint guy take care of that rear window. They know all the little tricks and super nice steamers that make it well worth a few dollars.
Fantastic and very rare car, please keep it and enjoy it and sell other two because I would like to see this car more on your channel, thanks for a great video
It would be nice to see what diagnostic tools are needed to check over an AMG like this and what to look for as a owner that does their own maintenance.
@Lincoln, that is an excellent idea! Mike mentioned "scary" and I honesty find it scary with some of these Mercedes, the numbers & types of diagnostic codes that are sometimes found when connecting such tools. It would be nice to see what is available for them because no doubt there are a lot of cheap knock-offs that just won't work. It's unbelievable just how many "scanners" there are on the market and how many of them don't do much more than the other but they're varying prices and I wonder how many of them will actually work with these cars because they're a bit more complex than average domestic cars. I know it's likely not a priority but I'd also like to see Mike polish the headlights if he isn't replacing them. When I saw them I wanted to polish them for him, lol. And then there is the paint which could use some polishing. I'm interested to see what he will do with the car before he parts with it. I'm glad that he's happy with the gift of it.
YOU HAVE A UA-cam CHANNEL?! Mad excited when I realized who this was popping up on the feed after seeing you hear and there on the other channels. Looking very forward to this video and another channel I'll have to check out every day. Cheers!
Very nice, Mike! This was such a cool and generous gift. I really enjoy your appearances on Hoovie's and Wizard's channels. This SLK AMG really seems to have great bones, so I'd love to see you continue the work on it and fully bring it back to life.
enjoy all the cars, experience them, produce the content on them, and then sell all of them and start again. I'm thankful I found your channel. This is just my opinion, but I have a lot of experience in this.
One of the reasons you are a fan favorite is because of your positive attitude and you always have a smile on your face. Don’t forget to bring that smile to your channel.
Honestly, I'd be happy to see more work done on this AMG. Small cars with big engines is quickly going to become a thing of the past and it would be kinda nice to see this one gone through and fixed...especially by someone who's Mercedes-knowledgeable, as you are...unless of course, you find the right buyer who is somehow interested in fixing it up. Just my 2 cents!
I drove truck in the N.Dakota oil fields. For 600 bucks I bought a '95 E320 for "off time". Trunk lid was whacked in a bit, but it ran and drove great. I often drove on roads [literally "where the buffalo roam" ] that were slippery slick clay/dirt and rock. It would straighten itself out "like it was on rails".Only problem I had was a brass/ceramic fuse that had a little corrosion on it and wouldn't power the door lock/cylinder - key to disengage security system. 5 minute UA-cam video. Felt great to find the answer and fix so fast.
Keep this one, do some videos on it, buff the headlights up, clean up the engine bay, lower windshield plastic thing, de-tint and see how it is to live with. I think value wise, it would only increase as they are rare and collectable. Plus the history of Hoovie and now you, makes it worth a little more!
Yes! The headlights! So annoying! I don't know about regulations in Kansas, but elsewhere in the world, headlights like those would make the car fail to pass yearly inspections/MOT.
@@JohanNilsson1966 agreed, it's dangerous having the headlights so badly fogged. I think a lot of places in the US they don't have any annual safety inspections, so unless your car is obviously dangerous and a cop pulls you over for it, you can drive any old shitheap.
Great video Mike, I look forward to your channel growing enough to start giving you some return. You have a great car knowledge and put things across very well. Best wishes for your future and thanks for sharing. Bob M. South Wales
I enjoy all "get your hands dirty" car restoration/maintenance videos. The more challenging the better, but make sure all projects get some sort of closure. Bring us along on "your ride" when replacing front window, handle rear window, find all other quirks. Good Luck, looking forward to more videos.
Hi Mike, great to see your new channel, I subscribed immediately. Would love to see you succeed in this new venture - keep the SLK! Small encouraging tip - at the Wizards we see you smiling and upbeat - adds a great vibe - in your video you appear like you are under pressure from the camera - it must be difficult, but I’m sure it would help to see the real you come through - happy and confident in what you are doing. All the very best mate, love to see you succeed.
For the tint, high pressure steamer. Heat up the whole glass first, then focus on the area you want to start. A small cut will help you get your fingers on a loose piece. Steam at the locations you're pulling off. Be gentle. It will come right off, somewhat slowly. If you're careful, most of the glue will come with it - be careful pausing as that will tend to leave a glue line. Isopropyl alcohol (maybe ammonia) and plastic scrapers will remove the leftover glue, if any. Done 2 cars this way in the last year, one of them with >10yo tint. I used the Bissell 39N7H after trying a generic Amazon piece of crap that failed immediately.
You guys have stumbled into some UA-cam golden zone there in Kansas. First Hoovie, then the Wizard has nearly 800k subs. The Wizard who was the most camera averse person ever to be caught on camera. Now you. Good on ya for the ambition and success.
Hey Mike, new subscriber here, I think more AMG content would be great as long as it doesn't ruin your checkbook. As for the old tint, take it to a tint guy. They should be able to remove the old stuff without damaging the defroster grid.
You’re the man Mikey! Glad to see you with the channel and let’s get you some of that Hoovie cash off YT. Loved watching you and the Wizard last few years ❤
Would like to see you keep this one and show all the little things you have to do to keep it running. Hope your channel gains the traction it deserves/
M112k is a bulletproof engine and the 722 tranny is bulletproof. One of Mercedes last truly reliable engines. The only issue they really have is leaking valve covers and cps going out every few years.
I concur with using a steamer or hair dryer (not a heat gun) to remove the rear tint. To remove the adhesive residue, spray WD-40 on a paper shop towel and use that to remove the adhesive, testing first to make sure it doesn't remove the heater grid adhesive. Then you can use glass cleaner or alcohol to remove the WD-40 residue.
That m112k engine is a very well built engine, as well as the transmission. They are small, and lots of fun too. There is a lot of interchangeable parts with cheaper models, especially interior parts, basic suspension stuff, all of the top mechanisms.
I'm a 74 yo retiree who was seriously thinking of putting my name in to buy this car when you were ready, but your description made me reconsider if I could or should afford it. From your talk about issues that can arise, and the expense, I think it's a nice car I'd love to drive, but not one I could take care of and afford. Damn!!!
The Soundtrack was awesome. I too would watch anything you put on UA-cam. I don’t know how I missed it until today that you had a channel. So I am hitting the subscribe button. Thank you
Hi Magic Mike, that's really a cool car! And it's a very nice gift. I bought a similar car (with the small engine) two weeks ago. It is two years older, but with only 50 kmiles in very good condition. If you want to do more content with it: how about cleaning the water drains in the front and in the back? I assume this might be a helpful job as your car lived on a field for a while.
The Suzuki and Mercedes are popular all around the world. It would make sense to keep those two and you would have a wider audience for subsequent videos. I like your delivery style. In 5 years you will be living next door to Hoovie.
Mike, a steam cleaner is pretty much the only option on the window tint. I had the same issue and tried all kinds of chemicals like aircraft remover, but in the end the steam softened the old tint to where a plastic scraper can remove it
Hi Mike , when I used to have to remove old tint on defrosted windows I used a heat gun to get it started then use ammonia and water solution in a spray bottle, protect the interior and wear a respirator, but it will turn the glue to a rubbery soft consistency then a 3m plastic scraper will remove it easily 🤷🏼♂️Give it a try ☺️😁
Hey guys, I had to remove tint twice in my life and both times I used steam to heat up the old glue and then pulled the film off easily. Then used “Goo-Gone” to remove the glue residue… Good luck
I owned one of these for a few years. I loved the retractable hardtop, the bose sound system and the quick acceleration. At the time of its production it had the fastest 0-60 of anything in the MB lineup, although it was soon surpassed by the slk55amg. Of 4333 produced, only 2056 of these were exported to the US, so it felt kind of cool to have a somewhat rare car. But I lived in constant fear that something was going to break and cost thousands to repair or that it would get dinged in a parking lot, and the insurance was expensive. So I sold it and went back to driving beaters that are cheap to fix and own. Fun times for a while though.
Use heat lamps or a heat gun on the outside of the glass, stretching the tint slightly as parallel to the glass as you can to help keep the adhesive on the tint. Clean the leftover glue with Sprayway glass cleaner using 00 steel wool or preferably white Scotch Brite pads so you don't damage the defogger grid. I used to be a 3M tint dealer in Garden City area for 7 years and have found this to be the safest way to get the old tint off and prep the glass for new tint.
Wow, talk about timely! Just bought a Tundra where the owner used Windex on the tint. Now I have metallic bits flaking off everywhere. Thanks for the tip!
Random question since you might know the answer, I remove the tint from my car about 2 years ago, but I accidentally scratched one of the defogger lines on the inside of the rear hatch. (03 civic si) What would be the best way to solder, paint, or fix the line? It's not a huge issue, but it's been bugging me for 2 years or so, and I want to fix it.
@@Rokkator there is a metallic resistive paint specifically for defogger grid repair. ConductiveX comes to mind. I just get the paint and mask off the grid above and below the line, put on 2 coats, and it works up to 2 1/2 inches long. I also cut the paint at the tape line with an Olfa stainless blade. The stainless steel won't scratch the glass. Hope this helps.
I think you should keep the Buick, but it really needs to be your decision. I love the content on the Buick, Suzuki and the Leaf. Congratulations on the Mercedes.
Oh you've gotta keep the Roadmaster "Rhoda" should be with you. If you have a steam plate that might be the route to take on removing the tint, that worked for me
Cool Magic Mike! Congrats, you sure desserve it! Tried warm air (air dryer?) for rear tint? Well know trick. Hopefully defrost will stay put. Polish these milky headlights? Have fun, see ya on UA-cam!
When Hoovie gave it to you hahahaha "you mind if i flip it" I almost died laughing! But... Still might be the thing to do here dude. Thinking being not enough under the hood to do for us all to watch!
Hey Mike! Congrats on the SLK32!! that is a fantastic gift and couldn't believe it when I watched Tylers episode giving it away! Well-deserved for sure. Due to his episode, I found your channel and am excited to watch some of your other episodes to see what your channel is all about! P.S I have liked and subscribed as well! I am newer youtuber also and love to support up and coming channels like this. I have a R170 Slk230 Komppressor myself ... ( 2.4L I4 Komppressor aka M111) and have lots of Mercedes Content on my channel that you may enjoy. Regarding the window tint in that condition will not be fun removing but have heard ammonia and steamers are a good go to product for easier removal. Hopefully that will help and will certainly look much better once removed. Keep an eye on the hydraulic rams as well if the seals have not been replaced as im sure you know they are prone to failure. Hopefully they have been done and seeing from looks like a replaced headliner you may be safe! I look forward to seeing some R170 content and what ever else you may have in store. That being said if you do decide to part ways with the R170 please reach out as I would love to discuss further with you, and we could even collaborate on some episodes if that was something of interest. Feel free to reach out anytime to Full Throttle on UA-cam/Instagram/ or Email.. Keep up the great work! - Full Throttle
Hey Magic Mike, congrats on the wheels, what a great outcome. Regarding the stuck rear window tint, I have a suggestion you might want to try. Make up a light mix of mild soapy solution. Baby bath soap mixed with warm water has worked well previously. Get some black bin liners (garbage bin) big enough to cover the window. Spray the soapy solution on to the window tint, then place the bin liner on to the sprayed surface, smooth out any air bubbles, to keep the surface wet over time. It also helps a lot to keep it warm (not hot). Usually leaving the car in the sun for 2-3 hours works well, however right now in Kansas, coming into winter, you may well need to get creative with an alternative. After 2-3 hours, maybe even 4 since it sounds like the tint is really old and crusty, try again to see if the tint can be lifted away from the glass. The idea is, the soapy solution will saturate the tint and work through to the adhesive that was originally used to fix it in place. Once the adhesive gets soaked with detergent, and warmed up it should become soft, and easier to peel away. No guarantees, but, nothing ventured nothing gained.
I'd definitely suggest trying a steamer. It may be a pita with the small confines, but it should help heat up the glue and loosen it. I used this method with a regular clothing steamer to remove PPF that was cracked and discolored on my 911 when I got it. It took some time and patience but worked great. I found another video where someone explains how to do it for the exact purpose you are looking to do, to protect the defroster lines: ua-cam.com/video/xhBEEC5seEA/v-deo.html As someone else mentioned, it may be worth taking it somewhere to retint and just have them remove the old tint (they may just remove without new tint, I have never asked a tint shop). Good luck with it either way.
....but the other tint shop might not tell you they trashed the defroster lines when it peels off with the old tint...that shop has to be real good and you have to TRUST them A LOT.
The trick to getting that tint off the rear window is a clothes steamer. If you slowly peel back the tint, while hitting the glass with steam, the glue will melt away.
I’d like to see you keep the AMG Mike, it would be nice to see you enjoy this good looking car, it was pretty nice of Hoovie to show his appreciation for all your expert skill in keeping his fleet alive.
Q & A about your experience working at Mercedes, maybe +s and -s. What do you think about the direction Mercedes is going? How did you get to Kansas? Also, yes content on the Merc....Also what are you favorite types of cars and why...You seem to have alot of insight and knowledge, that will continue to grow. What kinds of things do you value in cars. What direction would you like to see the car industry go and what are your thoughts working on cars as they get more digital. Glad to see you are making a channel. *Just saw your QnA from last year: How did you get to SoCal and then back to Kansas...maybe share some fun places to do nature and visit wear you live...maybe tie in what car would you drive and/or how do you prepare, if you do camping or something...just some ideas.
Mike, I bought an SL around the time The Wizard said that these old Mercedes are not wallet friendly. He was right, mine costs about $5K every season. But I love it, and I know you’ll hate to part with yours. Enjoy. Look forward to your content.
please keep the amg its such a gem plus hoovie already paid for all that fixing LOL. didn't know you had a youtube channel and now that I do Im definitely subbed
Mike, Tint glue dissolves best with ammonia. I use it as strong as I can stand it. Get a little piece peeled back and spray behind the film then pull gently and slowly. Hopefully you can get a big piece coming off without tearing it. It will not hurt the defrost grid. Once you get all the film off, the glue will wipe away with a few rags and a spray bottle of ammonia.
I think what any nit wit watching you guys interact can tell is that you're a good egg. The Wizard is a good egg. Hoovie is a good egg. It's nice to see that you guys are sharing the love of what you have created. I hope you can grow your channel, Magic Mike, without it sucking the life outta you. Make it happen Captain!
Great to see you with your own channel. Your insight on many cars is wonderful to have. I'm dealing with the same tint-removal process on my 1981 Porsche 928. I'm finding a hair dryer helps quite a bit but with the defrost bars on the back window, it's still a pain-staking process. Go slow, be patient!
Don't break the bank. I look forward to seeing the projects you get into. Your knowledge and approach to issues is what I want to see. Above that, you having fun and enjoying yourself.
Honestly, I'd watch any car you want to make content with as long as it is not a financial burden on you.
@John Doe 🤣
Ya there’s def something to be said abt that! Do what you do best and if your channel is any good that means you’re a likable guy and people enjoy watching you be you! That’s what makes a good channel, when someone is enjoying their life while doing something interesting!

I was going to suggest this as the best method, makes the tints softer and more pliable. Even the steam will rehydrate the next bit to come off. But that you've done this and proven it's an effective method is excellent!
Have used this technique, would recommend. The better steamer you can get, the easier the job but a cheapo does the trick too.
A hair dryer will work as well
I used to work in a tint shop and this is what we did. Use a small plastic scraper to avoid damaging the defroster lines.

From your talk about issues that can arise, and the expense, I think it's a nice car I'd love to drive, but not one I could take care of and afford. Damn!!!
I’d keep the Buick and sell the Suzuki. That’s just me. You do you and keep filming it. We’ll keep watching 👍🏼
I had the same issue and tried all kinds of chemicals like aircraft remover, but in the end the steam softened the old tint to where a plastic scraper can remove it
This is why I love the internet! Great tips!
That is a cool car and as long as it's working well, it's a keeper at least for a while.
Then used “Goo-Gone” to remove the glue residue…
Good luck
How long ago was that though
It was built 2001 to 2004. I owned one 2009 to 2010. @@4gomez7
Maybe, it’s purple with metallic “dust” coming off everywhere. If you roll the window down, it’s like someone blew fine glitter. Lol
Dish soap also helps get the glue off
Your awesome Mike !! And I love seeing you on Hoovies and the Car Wizards channels. Good luck with your UA-cam endeavors and you have my support !!
I think you should keep the Buick, but it really needs to be your decision. I love the content on the Buick, Suzuki and the Leaf. Congratulations on the Mercedes.
Yay, a magic Mike channel! Best wishes for your endeavour Mike, you seem to know what you're talking about and we like that.
Talented at a piano adds to the "Magic Mike" handle. Very interested to watch your channel.

I think you deserve this one. Enjoy it a little before you sell at at minimum!
Just like with Wizard and Hoovie, I can't wait to watch your fututre video's, Mike. Keep them coming!
I'd definitely suggest trying a steamer. It may be a pita with the small confines, but it should help heat up the glue and loosen it. I used this method with a regular clothing steamer to remove PPF that was cracked and discolored on my 911 when I got it. It took some time and patience but worked great. I found another video where someone explains how to do it for the exact purpose you are looking to do, to protect the defroster lines:
ua-cam.com/video/xhBEEC5seEA/v-deo.html
As someone else mentioned, it may be worth taking it somewhere to retint and just have them remove the old tint (they may just remove without new tint, I have never asked a tint shop). Good luck with it either way.
+1, and it also helps leaving the car at the sun so the window gets hot to the touch and the adhesive is easier to pull off
....but the other tint shop might not tell you they trashed the defroster lines when it peels off with the old tint...that shop has to be real good and you have to TRUST them A LOT.
The trick to getting that tint off the rear window is a clothes steamer. If you slowly peel back the tint, while hitting the glass with steam, the glue will melt away.
The biggest gift was the continuity foi the car in your chanel, that’s why i watched your video
I’d like to see you keep the AMG Mike, it would be nice to see you enjoy this good looking car, it was pretty nice of Hoovie to show his appreciation for all your expert skill in keeping his fleet alive.
Congrats, Mike! Keep the mighty Roadmaster!!!
Love the ominous music. Adds to what might be some great videos down the line.
It's great to see your video! Your style of presenting is very nice to watch. Greeting from the Netherlands, Hein
Nice to see more content up here. You're a natural, I'm pretty sure people would watch cement dry with Magic Mike the Cement Guy if that was a thing.
Thanks for sharing and your lucky to have a gracious boss that let's you work on your car at the shop.
Mike, I bought an SL around the time The Wizard said that these old Mercedes are not wallet friendly. He was right, mine costs about $5K every season. But I love it, and I know you’ll hate to part with yours. Enjoy. Look forward to your content.
Great to see you on UA-cam Magic !
please keep the amg its such a gem plus hoovie already paid for all that fixing LOL. didn't know you had a youtube channel and now that I do Im definitely subbed
!! Hell yeah !! Thanks for being an active user you have been luckly selected for the giveaway
session....
The magic touch of Hoovies bringing fame do another new channel. Nice to see you creating content as well
Don't break the bank. I look forward to seeing the projects you get into. Your knowledge and approach to issues is what I want to see. Above that, you having fun and enjoying yourself.
You go, Magic Mike! You can learn youtube from two great masters.
I just recently heard you had a channel - do whatever you can work on when you can - I enjoy honest work and learning. I wish you the best of luck!
Hey Mike, did not realize you have a channel, glad to have found it !
Acetone will soften and loosen old tint be sure to protect interior
When you replace your washer pump make sure you get the one for headlight washers
