Hard to argue 11 rings.. I know Bird was a way better shooter from anywhere and way better passer, better court-vision. I give Russell the edge on D, though Bird is 61st ranked in Overall Defensive Rating on the all-time list. Russell was a superior shot-blocker. Both were incredible leaders and teammates--very unselfish. Both were rebounding freaks, Bird avg. 10 for a career at SF is exceptional, but Russell's 22/gm, even at C is unheard of today. I gotta go with Bird, though. He is the man in the clutch no matter what you need and he could get easy open looks for everyone--made everyone look better than they really were. Only 24-10-6 guy in history and no one tougher. +32 wins for Boston Bird's rookie year is unparalleled impact. Bird was the toughest athlete I have ever seen and he dominated guys--even with a broken back. His rebounding in the 81 ECF against Philly were grown-men rebounds--guys today must be scared to go after them like Bird and Moses did. Today's game is a sissy-ball 3-point contest--whether you're hot or not. Thank GOD today's game has Jokic.

Now to the rankings. First I would not even try to rank them against one another. I grew up in NJ watching Bill Russell lead his Celtics to over power my Knicks and that other local team, Wilt Chamberlains 76ers. I also was in Indiana when Larry Bird played at ISU and watched him come into the game. Russell and Bird are the two best Celtics of all time and only comparable to one another as being the ultimate team players when on the floor but incomparable to one another as Russell was a defensive center and playmaker and the Bird an offensive forward and playmaker = a class by themselves = tied as the two best Celtics. Instead of ranking I would put the best Celtics on an all-time team. Russell at Center. Bird at Small Forward and McHale at Power Forward. Then Sam Jones and Bob Cousy as Shooting Guards. Lastly, the sixth man being John “Honda” Havlicek who was the Celtics 6th man, who revolutionized that “position.” When the Celtics were lagging on the court Auerbach would call up Honda and our Knick and 76er hearts would fall into despair. He would come onto the floor like an energizer bunny, rip the nets and spark another Celtic comeback. Cousy, Jones, Bird, McHale and Russell with Havlicek. (BTW, I once saw my hero, Wilt, 320 lbs of power, go up for a two handed dunk over Russell and dang if Russell didn’t get his right hand between the ball and the rim as Wilt stuffed it. Blocked! Next thing I knew the Celtics were on a fast break. That was the moment I knew Russell was the best team center ever on the floor and why those Celtics were unparalleled in the game. Russell has the rings to show for it.)

Bob Cousy is a top 4 all-time Celtic along with Russell, Havlicek & Bird. The next 4 chronologically are Sam Jones, Cowens, McHale & Pierce.
