The switch being a successor to the Wiiu and 3Ds was not done well to the 3Ds probably because there were no Early 3ds ports I took 7 years before one 3ds port Luigi's Mansion 2 HD.
I really wish the WiiU succeeded, I thought that was a perfect TV-Console counterpart of the 3DS, and I thought it was a phenomenal move for Nintendo's early-to-mid 2010s' generation to be an evolved or enhanced version of their predecessors (DS & Wii), and had the WiiU co-succeeded alongside the 3DS, we'd probably continue to see *2 Nintendo Platforms Per Generation* instead of merging together into their Hybrid System nature, with the 3DS successor potentially being Nintendo HDS (featuring two screens that both display 1280×720, and sharing very similar graphics to Mario Kart Tour and PlayStation Vita) released in 2018 and while I have no idea what that WiiU's hypothetical successor could've been, but just for the sake of this comment, i'll call it the WiiV, which would've released in 2019 and being comparably as powerful as the PlayStation4Pro & XboxOneX, still being a generation behind Nintendo's competitors (PS5 & XbSX) for their 3rd consecutive generation in a row due to strategic reasons! Sorry if this comment was too long, just wanted to share my own speculation of what-if the WiiU was a successful console much like the 3DS.
It was a success, but unfortunately it showed dedicated handhelds in a post-smartphone world were at a dead end. The Switch was the best choice Nintendo could have done. They could center all their resources in one device and allowed them to differentiate themselves from Sony and Microsoft while still appealing to their handheld market.
@@3dsfan2002 Absolutely. 2013 one of the best years as a college student who commutes 1-2 hours daily to attend classes. Eventually I hacked it and played anything GBA and below. And ending it with the gem that was Fire Emblem Echoes before I got my Switch in June 2017... It was the perfect handheld.
It all makes sense. I always knew the switch was a prototype. Felt like one at launch. Hence, the the no pads. They were actually on the right track. They shouldn't have bogged down the TEGRA X1 AND ALLOWED IT TO DO 4K (DOCKED UP) and let 60 fps be baseline. The switch is capable of 60 fps for most games as well as 120 fps.
Oddly right up until launch they were planning to support 4k video playback on the Switch and then took it away for no clear reason. Probably some market positioning thing, like they didn't want 4k video support to lead people to think of it as a '4k console'.
This is very interesting, and it shows they had interest in continuing forward with 3DS's existing features, many of which I would like to see brought back. This gives me more hope that they might actually do that with the Switch successor. I wonder if nowadays there is a solution that could make sending the feed to a screen wirelessly more ideal. If so, maybe they have returned to that idea for the Switch successor. I'm moreso expecting attempts to pander more to 3DS fans though, than actually putting in wild new features.
@@notmii8855 that would be redundant I love 3D but aside from us nobody uses it because it gives many people headaches it is also expensive to implement and reduces performance and eats more battery
Why is it so difficult to find the smaller new 3ds? The new 3ds xl model is everywhere and expensive. The smaller one is like trying to find a needle in a haystack and is even more expensive. That one is better for pocketable, on the go gaming. The xl is too big and uncomfortable in the pocket.

The Nintendo DS Indy would've been able to play its own games, New 3DS games, 3DS games, DSi games, DSiWare, DS games, Wii U games, WiiWare, Wii games and if modded, GameCube games due to the Wii's backwards compatibility with GameCube games even if you didn't have OG Wii, it still was compatible if modded. As far as VC Games (some modded), it could've played N64, SNES, NES, GameBoy, GameBoy Color, GameBoy Advance, VirtualBoy, SEGA Dreamcast (idk but maybe), SEGA Genisis, Sega CD, SEGA Master System, Atari 2600. Essentially, itself, as well as every other Nintendo, SEGA, and Atari console before it. Ngl, I wouldn't know any kid, especially Nintendo DS, Wii/Wii U, and GameCube fans like me and General Nintendo fans who wouldn't want a handheld like this.
I'm so glad this never released. there's an alternative dimension where this released as an oval and i imagine it would be fun and we'd get a lot of innovative games, but it would've been a failure. Still, i kinda miss the Iwata era of Nintendo.
It's interesting to see the many cool features that were planned for the Nintendo Switch predecessor, like the streetpass, 3d screen and such, in the end we only got bluetooth headphones (only after a very long time after release), 2 themes and paid online suscription, wow, hopefully the Switch 2 will have all, or at least one of the features that the 3ds had, c'mon Nintendo, give us features other than playing games, please

Who was confused if the Wii U game pad was an add in for the Wii or a new console? Like, I think Kevin Perera or whoever said_something_ but it was immediately answered and the branding and marketing was at least clear on that fr that start but I hear it in every retrospective that talks about the Wii U…but I just don’t think it was generally true.
It obviously wasn't as big of a problem in enthusiast circles but the general audience (which the Wii was primarily aimed at) anecdotally seems to have been pretty confused, didn't help that the uDraw tablet for the Wii came out right around the same time.
There were more factors that let to the failure of the WiiU. I Personally believe the success of the Wii also had a negative impact for its follow up. The Wii was bought by many non gamers as a gimmick. at the end of the console live time the hype was over. The WiiU needed to rehype the interest and the marketing campaign failed to do so. The launch titles were weak, the commercials were confusing. Also the competition from mobile gaming was really high and the 3ds was just selling well. Also In strongly remember people thinking the controller would be too big and heavy to play for long sessions on the tv. The whole "thinking the WiiU is just an addon for the Wii" was just one of the reasons, and I believe not the biggest reason.
The Switch is honestly a great concept of hardware, but tbh Nintendo sacrificed a lot of their handheld success to make it. The OS is essentially just a glorified game launcher, even the DSi had more builtin software features. The joycons are somehow cheaper than the DS line of control inputs, and the added sensors like motion and depth from the Wii have gone unused for the game lineup. Lots of handheld clones proved that it is being used primarily for gaming at anytime convenience and not a multiplayer experience like the DS. Even Steam Deck, which is almost a PC, is a popular platform to emulate Switch games. On top of all that, the change to Tegra means that the Switch is incapable of emulating even Wii games (and GC games efficiently) due to its underpowered chip and different architectural design. Lots of Wii and Wii U games have been locked to their original console. DS and 3DS games are also essentially lost to themselves because the Switch lacks the necessary peripherals to make backwards compatibility possible. And as usualy Nintendo makes ports at a snails pace and also loves to sell them at full AAA price. I would kill for a 4DS, but as you said Nintendo combined all their dev teams and are going to be set on the hybrid model for a while, especially now with the Switch 2 around the corner. I think they'd find success with the right marketing campaign. Mobile gaming had its bubble pop and is now essentially no longer a competitor if treated correctly. All they'd have to do is make a DS equivalent in specs to a phone like ROG, and make the dev kit cheap & easy to get which would allow mobile devs to make a plethora of games again to something similar to the original DS library which was huge. Even for Nintendo though that seems unlikely because they don't always reducing console exclusives.
The wii u was awesome its the best system to jailbreak because of the backward compatibility of it. I have a ps1 emulator on it, and you can even play nds games on it on the big screen
Hearing a nintendo song from my childhood makes me want to instantly click off a video. Why would anyone who also grew up with these songs want all of that fondness and nostalgia intertwined with some random video they clicked on? Theres plenty of good musical alternatives for a video game centric channel. Not at all trying to hate, many people do this.
The patent it was based on was a real concept, as outlined in the video, but the leak itself was a 3D printed fake. By the time it came out, Nintendo had already moved on to the final Switch design.
It really pisses me off that people think the 2d single screen switch is a replacement for the 3ds. it has its own merits but its an entirely different device. It really upsets me that i can't get this old device and updated versions of it. Man, the Indy sounds like a recipe for disaster. Feature overbloating (wich didn't sell more consoles neither on the handheld nor home console side) with the Wii U architecture (wich was famourly hard to work with due to being overcomplicated and outdated) and a 3D screen (wich hurts performance). Add in an extra chipset for 3DS BC wich woul've ramped up the price and the worst video stream technology of the moment, and you have a company destroyer right there. Thank Iwata they slowly transitioned to the Switch and did a clean cut from the WiiDS era.

Liked my comment to see if UA-cam doesn't mess with it. I did an app reload and it seems to have not ruined my I liked comment but removed it just encase. NX, Next? Hmm besides the Cafe and other direction there. Like the Dreamcast projects of Dural and the other it is interesting what console makers really do go through of not only part availability and hardware gimmicks or so but what really they can get good on of either project suiting for specs, easy porting/reworking and more. A lot to consider of parts, what's ideal, and more. ARM, Power PC or otherwise between different parts compatibility or dropping it all together. What they are going for to achieve the vision with powerful enough hardware besides API/software environments with it. But Wii U like then 3DS emulatable or 3DS and not even close for Wii U but ports like Switch or other factors hmm. Would have been interesting a Wii U handheld for compatibility, mirroring with cables/dock. I have yet to watch your Nivida 3DS prototype video but yeah the Switch similar of GPU consideration (different Tegra of course) for 3DS is interesting for sure. Would or may not have been better then Vita which wouyhave been interesting. No idea compared to the Panasonic Jungle the cancellation of the MMO handheld before or during the early Vita/3DS era. My smartphone Nokia 5.1+ and 8.3 5G and TV 32 inch from 2016 with a 3rd party game lags, the delay is very noticeable. The app likely is at fault besides the hardware. Or the TV processing isn't good enough which is also very likely. But Wii U/Vita to PS4 did processing very well for the time/struggling nowadays Vita if too much interference while Wii U being local and only to Wii U related hardware makes it useable no problem then to a modem or otherwise competition with other devices that Xbox and PS4 and others have that Wii U doesn't have. I think Wii U could be expanded on the menu use like Windows 8, Xbox One 2013 or other things like GBA VC manuals not pausing the game or other factors of dual screen use while dual screen phones are still basic and niche of app use.

@@langstonbelin It would not halve processing power. I understand how that makes sense intuitively, it's simply not how it works in practice. Check out how the Wii U and 3DS balanced everything, there was some really clever work done to make the concept viable.
DS-TV OUT only really exists because of a large oversight.
Why what happened?
@@cmbaz1140 chipset was the same as of devkit and they forgot to change it to not have connections for av-out

There was a possibility that we would've gotten a 4DS instead of the Switch
I love when the algorithm recommends me a small channel that clearly researches their topics. I loved seeing all the internal Nintendo documents. You did a good job relating the important points without being too wordy. This is great work.
Awesome writeup guys! Btw, don't forget that STmicro also makes the mcus for the joycon controllers, so their relations with nintendo are still strong.
This is really cool history, as I always assumed the Switch was just a portable Wii U at heart
Still hoping for a streetpass revival

Great, informative and well-paced video, now this is some real video game history :D very interesting!
I miss the quirky apps of the DS line of handhelds.
Amazing analysis of Gigaleak files, most in-depth video I've seen of this type of content. I would love to see more videos in this style on hardware, games, or whatever.
I would buy or make this thing to get to exist. Just an over powered 3DS.
Such a very interesting video on the canceled 3DS successor and the birth of the switch, I've always wanted to learn more information about that oval shaped controller leak.
I would buy a book detailing Nintendo console prototypes that never made it to the public.
We know some of them and they're so interesting!

you should be featured on didyouknowgaming to really get you’re foot in the door
Finally, the 4DS
i feel like so many questions i had as a teen about how the transition from the wii u and 3ds to the switch have finally been answered. something deep in my brain was finally put to rest with this video
seeing an actual version of the stick switch leak stunlocked me irl
Nice to see you've remade your INDY video!
Uhhhh, I think the bigger problem with the Wii U wasn't that most people saw it as a way for Nintendo to try to capture the mobile market, but with a lack of marketing
Super informative and well structured video!
Though I can’t shake the feeling that I’ve seen a very similar, if not near identical video a couple months ago (perhaps even on this channel). But I just checked , and this is the first video on this topic. Weird deja vu lol
It's a remake of that video. But thank you!
Man, heading about Nvidia ramking up the TegraX1 security early on is pretty sad given people found a way to get around it with the first Switches anyway.
The switch being a successor to the Wiiu and 3Ds was not done well to the 3Ds probably because there were no Early 3ds ports I took 7 years before one 3ds port Luigi's Mansion 2 HD.
Man I would have loved a true 3ds Successor but at least things worked out for Nintendo in the end.
To this day people ask “what is that” when I whip out the Wii U tablet
3ds ended up as a success by the end of it’s lifespan
It was a success, but unfortunately it showed dedicated handhelds in a post-smartphone world were at a dead end.
The Switch was the best choice Nintendo could have done. They could center all their resources in one device and allowed them to differentiate themselves from Sony and Microsoft while still appealing to their handheld market.

Absolutely. 2013 one of the best years as a college student who commutes 1-2 hours daily to attend classes.
Bravely Default, A Link Between Worlds, Fire Emblem Awakening, Animal Crossing New Leaf, Pokemon X... And later with Smash 3DS, Monster Hunter, Pokemon ORAS...
Eventually I hacked it and played anything GBA and below. And ending it with the gem that was Fire Emblem Echoes before I got my Switch in June 2017... It was the perfect handheld.
I just want them to put some 3ds back in production, the used market is insane
This was really good.. Thanks!
Looks like it was going to take some design cues from the PS Vita. I'd also imagine it would've been just as powerful as the Vita.
A53 and Wii U GPU would be light years ahead of Vita.
@RGDUA-cam mabye! That makes sense theoretically. Nintendo love dropping the ball, lol. Anyway, this next system should be 4k
A 3D screen that can be used as a VR headset too is the say for the Switch sucessor
You don't need stereoscopic 3D screens for VR... you can already play VR games on the current Switch and perceive depth
@ask343 i said too... as in it does no glasses 3D and high resolution VR
@@notmii8855 that would be redundant
I love 3D but aside from us nobody uses it because it gives many people headaches
it is also expensive to implement and reduces performance and eats more battery
So it was like a weird middle step between 3DS and Wii U
Why is it so difficult to find the smaller new 3ds? The new 3ds xl model is everywhere and expensive. The smaller one is like trying to find a needle in a haystack and is even more expensive. That one is better for pocketable, on the go gaming. The xl is too big and uncomfortable in the pocket.
It only got a limited release in America.
Don't forget the changeable faceplates :D
It's a lot easier if you try to import a foreign one, it wasn't really sold in America.
100% import a new 3ds from Japan using something like zenbuy and then hack it to change region
Its still kinda easy to find for 100 euros in germany
Just think about the crazy high amount of awesome devices laying around somewhere that never came to market but are cooler than anything that has!!! I assure you the tech and sheer amount of said devices would blow your mind! 🤯
Please let the next console have some of the 3ds successor ideas
11:00 - That's how close they came to f-king it up!
INDY and Iris, sitting in a.. cabinet somewhere in Nintendo's archives.
And not in the museum seemingly :(
You know with canceled games and game consoles information out there I wonder why no independent company didn't try to make use of it.
Wonder what nintendo could do with a gps of all things

Inlike how the oic with the question mark is a ds lite
The 4ds grabs and chokes you when it senses pirated content.
for the longest time i thought the wii u could play 3ds games, this is probably why.
Honestly, DS was the best anti-emulation move Nintendo could do, it makes it inconvenient to play on other devices.
So if they want to kill off that software it might be a good move to bring this concept back
"STMicroelectronics (commonly referred to as ST or STMicro) is a multinational corporation and technology company of French-Italian origin. Incorporated in the Netherlands, its headquarters are in Plan-les-Ouates, Switzerland, its research and production apparatus is situated in Grenoble France.
ST is the largest European semiconductor contract manufacturing and design company."
Its not a swiss company but in typical European fashion its a bit fragmented
so thats why the switch has so many wii u/gamecube/wii ports. this is also probably why the 3ds got a couple of wii/GameCube ports
new video finally :-)))
The Nintendo 4DS it pops out at your face
the 3DS had a dock called the cradle, one came with my 3DS, its kinda lame
Wasn't a dock, just a stand

It didn't send video to a TV so it's literally not a dock,no language game
@@notmii8855 well you also wouldn't really call it a stand, since it doesn't prop up the 3DS

I wish we got the Indy, the Switch basically threw out everything fun about the 3DS, while they planned for the Indy to keep it.
I'm pretty sure that its menu would've still looked similar to Switch's menu because minimalism was the main trend of UI design at the time.

THE FAKE SWITCH LEAK WAS REAL!?
The patent it was based on was a real concept, as outlined in the video, but the leak itself was a 3D printed fake. By the time it came out, Nintendo had already moved on to the final Switch design.

Is this a reupload?
