Yeah, Richard is something we like to call a hypocrite. He complains that cards are too strong and swears up and down that he wouldn't play them because he doesn't like them, just to end up playing all of them.
I don't care if someone plays powerful cards, within reason, but taking some sort of moral high ground against them just to turn around and play them is just absurd
I agree with Crim, you should ban Field of the Dead. Its too ubiquitous

The power level difference between the decks was way too big this game. Richard with field of the dead, smothering tithe, open the way, urza saga, burgeoning, nowhere near janky mono white cycling with 10 cent cards

Yeah, it feels like Richard didn't really play to theme. Everyone else is playing a deck that's reliant on something... bad, to do pretty much anything, and Richard's just playing generic broken cards around a commander that draws cards.
I dunno, I guess for me at least, this game wasn't even particularly entertaining to watch? Like Richard just took over the game on turn 4 or so, and nobody else ever really got to do... anything.
He’s always like “I gotta power up my jank deck with staples so it actually does the thing”. Isn’t the whole point of the jank deck that it’s jank
@@hanschristopherson8056 Also John Benton can be build way cheaper and still play well. Combat tricks are usually very cheap cards because they aren't great most of the time. But in this deck they are great card draw.
I just casually watch Commander Clash, but it feels like every deck Richard plays with is centrally the same with random cards around it that minorly contribute to whatever theme he is pretending to follow.
He's a big believer in 'good stuff,' for sure.

Lol I know this video was months ago, but this comment is the main reason I don’t agree with the concept of “staples”. Once you’ve acknowledged that cards are just generally good and help any deck, you can essentially build any deck with all “staples”. So instead I actively try to only include the same cards for mana/lands.
I think you should run cards like Ruination and Back to Basics to punish greedy lands decks.
I think I'm going to start running Ruination.

Seths deck the type of jank unique spice im looking for on commander clash. Easy to make its less than $400 by cutting the cards above $20 that can be replaced for budget players too. Tutors, akromas, and the token doublers are easy $150 of the budget
I might have to bring it back and see if I can get it to pop off. I think the idea is really cool!
adrix is like $5 right now, so 1 doubler is affordable.

Field of the Dead is strong but wasn't the problem, early 20 lands on the battlefield and instant speed Glacial Chasm won the game
@@Verlajn11 Those extra bodies on board made it so that they couldn't effectively pressure Richard in any way. So yeah 20 lands+ 17 zombies off the turn 2 field of the dead I would say is a hefty chunk of the problem.
@@RPGFanboy14 the key Rakdos attack failed because of Chasm not because of zombies. The line of play with mayhem devil and sacrificing lands would've failed because of chasm, not because of zombies

I feel like Richard didn't get the memo about the theme this week. Crim was doing sacrifice stuff, Seth was doing super janky cycling, Phil was doing goad shenanigans, meanwhile Richard was just playing regular old voltron. Not even voltron with some unique twist, it's literally just all the generic voltron stuff in his colors. It's like having an alt wincon week where one player shows up and says "My alternate wincon is combat damage"

Richard is hardcore abusing lands this season due to the social ban on LD.
He always has glacial chasm, maze of ith, field of the dead, vesuva and thespian stage and we see him play those every game.
I think they should start playing nonbasic hate like Ruination or Back to Basics, the usual argument of "people don't get to play EDH often, so you shouldn't mess with their resources" really doesn't apply to people that play hundreds of games like the goldfish crew and it would lead to other deckbuilding choices, when they have to run more basics
A simple Ghost Quarter also goes a long way, and isn't nearly as toxic as Ruination. There's more Ghost Quarter-likes than Fields of the Dead. Not sure why people always immediately go nuclear with nonsense like Back to Basics (which Green/White doesn't exactly have a hard time answering anyways).
I play Strip Mine every week, but it's not really enough. Maybe I'll have to start adding Wasteland too.
Ruination is not toxic. It's a perfectly pleasant card that does nothing to most budget players.
You can at the very least play Blood Moon, that card is incredibly tame and still somehow hated.
Being multicolored should come at a cost, playing no basics should come at an even greater cost

While I know there's limitations because of them not playing in person, but I really do think some of the issues others are seeing (like the nuisance that is FotD, which really should be banned from the format in general because of it being pretty much a card that can be shoved into 90% of commander decks, regardless of whether it fits the theme) could be avoided at least on occasion by something I love when TCC does, which is everyone building decks for everyone else. I find it as a reliable way to force people to play something different from what they're used to playing and not just fall back on the same cards in every deck or the same colors in each one (like the Prof making Crim a green storm deck).

My buddy has a Sargent John deck and it's genuinely the scariest deck in our pod IMO.

richard always ends up playing a lands deck every week and wins since all lands have hexproof and indestructible in commander. feel bad for the time everyone else spent building decks just for field of the dead and maze of ith again

blood moon, back to basics, ruination, price of progress, all of these and more should be commander staples.
strip mine and wasteland are garbage by comparison and also get hit by those other better cards.
frankly non basic lands should never have even been printed but the gene is out of the bottle so punishment is the correct course of action now.

For anyone else wondering, what Crim was saying:
Crim called out his face down card to not get a "GRV" or games rules violation, which would lead to a disqualification in a tournament setting.
You are required to reveal face down cards, to prove it was a legal play.
Sgt.John Benton is cracked. I play him for a $75 budget night I have with my friends. ($25 of the budget is Smothering Tithe, lol.) He is crazy fun with all the protection and buff spells you draw and can play since they are all 1-2 cmc. It's okay to make others draw because they aren't gonna be playing 2-3x5-6cmc spells with 4 mana early on. Cmd dmg is real.
I also have a Kros deck, but haven't built it in paper yet because I am not sure whether it can hang at tables I usually play at, though he for sure is a great goad/control/counters commander!
Wow, so moved by Phil playing Kros. It was the first Commander I built, and it is so much fun. I thought I was the only one playing it.
I would have really loved to see Keldon Firebomber go off. Such a sweet card from ye olden days when Land Destruction wasn't a boogeyman that made EDH players cry.

i really miss the old videos when commander matches used to last several hours, i really liked the gradual gameplay. right now the games seem getting closer and closer to yuugioh where everyone just wins by vomiting everything they have access to to win as fast as possible.
To be fair, half the time it seems to be Richard comboing off turn 4 or something to similar effect like what happened here.

In my Yes-Man deck, I make everyone agree to a licensing agreement that stipulates they must activate Yes-Man targeting the next player or me, conditional on the target accepting the license agreement. My pod loves it.

Field of the Dead should be banned in the entire format, not just Commander Clash. That card alone would be enough for me to jam Armageddon at casual tables; thankfully I don't see it much.

@@wesleywyndam-pryce5305 It answers the fun in the room. The real problem is that people complain about land destruction, but are happy to run overpowered lands. If I had a playgroup that played Field of the Dead, I would destroy all the lands so nobody was having fun, until the player stopped playing Field of the Dead. It isn't a gameplay solution, it is a social one.
Playing lands like Field of the Dead is taking advantage of the social contract of casual commander, therefore people who do that are on the verge of cheating.
...or just play.. field of the dead?

I saw a cool John Benton list on Twitter, but it had a ton of free spells. I took most of them out even though they were very good in the deck. I kept 3 total "free" spells, and the deck is still very good.

Richard had such good sportsmanship this game. He reminded Phil that he had priority and deployed his response first despite Phil seeming to indicate he would have a response that would let Richard get away with not having to use the resource. And he said "everything" on Farewell and stuck to it despite it possibly benefitting him far more to take it back. Kudos to you Richard!
The game was already decided by turn 6 at 13:36. Richard bringing a deck that is clearly way too powerful makes for poor content…otherwise you guys are great! Keep it up!
It really felt like Richard's deck was a pile of good cards with an incidental commander. Look how quickly he completely negated the the "risk" he was supposed to take by unlimited hand size, Alms Collector, and Smothering Tithe

This was quite possibly the best example of commander power-creep literally just Richard jamming the best best spells in his deck and winning like Seth’s deck is so unique and interesting but instead we just got value piles dot deck so disappointing used to love these videos now o dread watching them for these exact reasons

Before even watching the game: I think it's hilarious that there are three group-hug/politics decks and then Crim's self-harm deck which is like the total opposite. XD

Kros has been my signature deck since he came out. He’s a trash card with such a cool deck building challenge. Easy to get second, very fun puzzle in 1v1
I would also like to add my own support for banning Field of the Dead. The gameplay pattern is the exact same for any deck that runs it. It's kind of boring to see you guys race it out as quickly as possible and then copy it with Vesuva and Thespian's Stage every week
Did Richard forget to pay 10 life when he reequipped the Hand of Vecna?
It has two equip costs. You can pay the life or two mana
as someone who also plays Sgt. John Benson, my brew of it is different. instead of aura and equip, i use instant speed bump spells. makes it more nerve-racking for other players since they don't know how much he'll hit for. however i also don't have a field of the dead so i at least people can't get mad at me for that aspect
This is absolutely out of context, but you four and Tomer know so much about magic that I think you could make a cool video series where one of you makes a quizz about magic (like name a card and can that person say what color it is, what it does etc. Or maybe trivia stuff about a certain set etc) and the others have to answer individually.
I'm mostly stealing this format from TSN Bardown quizz, but I still think it would be a really good idea.
Asking again for a season where each card can only be used once each season! (Aside from basic lands) I think it would make for way more dynamic decks and less need to ban things because it would only ever be present once, so if someone *really* wanted a Sol Ring or Field of the Dead they would have to debate if the deck they're playing is worth it to never use those cards again for the rest of the season.
Interesting idea, though, depending on the length of the season, I think mana fixing lands might also need to be allowed to repeat: Blood Crypt, Dragonskull Summit, Graven Cairns, etc. Basically, I would revise to no repeats except lands whose only abilities are to produce mana and abilities that govern if the land enters tapped or untapped. Urborg, fetches, man-lands, basically all utility lands, surveil lands, scry lands, and more would be restricted to one deck.
There is a reason Ancestral Recall is banned in Commander and Sgt John Benton turns every pump spell to be card draw on the cheap.
Honestly, if it were me and a certain someone regularly doesn't catch the jank flow, i would start playing things that just punish them.
Something I used to do when my LGS was focused on land shenanigans such as Valakut, FoTD, Glacial Chasm, etc., was to break out the Temur slug deck.
From the Ashes, Ruination, Back to Basics, Blood Moon, Strip Mine, Wasteland, Ghost Quarter, Field of Ruin, etc. Pair the lands with Crucible effects and cards like Azusa, and you can efficiently punish the lands player.
I personally don't mind being the archenemy if it means everyone at the table has a decent chance of playing out the game without one person getting too far ahead too fast.

It does, but only if the creature is unblocked. Here, it was blocked, but still killed with trample, but Jewel doesn't care about trample

Seemed like him wanting to protect his cool stuff more than trying to mess with someone else’s which is kinda how he plays.
@@rnew1496 Yeah, it perfectly fits his playstyle, for sure. I'm pretty familiar with how Benton plays out though ("one big draw and you can never kill it again"), which makes it feel peculiar to me :p
@@Awesomesausages yeah, definitely a commander (and player for that matter because he’s crafty and theres going to be a big payoff) that you have to disrupt when given the chance, but that’s ok. Deck power level kind of felt a bit weird this week anyway. Granted a sample size of one match isn’t always the most telling.
Benton dominates games. Card doesn’t get the love it should. People beg to get hit for two but then they figure out it’s a monster.
Honestly, ban Field of the Dead. It's Richard's finisher in every deck, literally every deck

Didn't finish the episode. Field of the dead is boring. There are so many interesting cards in commander. Play those, please. These generic high power cards and strategies overshadow the more interesting deck concepts.

You guys need to embrace the land hate. Make them have artifacts, mana, dorks, rituals, WHATEVER it takes to make mana, but lands are also on the menu.
I do agree with banning field of the dead. I don't know it's not strong but seeing it and those zombie tokens basically every game is kind of tiring imo.

There are 1000s of cards in this game and we continue to feature Field of the Dead, Maze of Ith, and Glacial Chasm supported by non-basic land tutors. 🙄
Field of the Dead needs a Commander ban for the same reason as that Companion that requires you play Singleton

THIS game actually proves why Tef pro is terrible design. "Look at this cool thing I could have done to kill you!!" "Oh that wouldn't have killed me" That basically implies everything they did was irrelevant to him, and the game was over long before the game ended.
His answer was a white counter spell, not Teferi's pro. Stop shadow-boxing cards that weren't even in the game.
And it's only 3 mana 😂

I say ban field of the dead in decks that dont have synergies with it aka a token deck, zombies, or landfall and maybe in control decks. Everything else no just so we dont see it played in every deck played.
Richard's deck was fine until he started cracking the staples. That commander reminds me (in terms of deckbuilding) like Feather, in which it's cool when it's running the Thing It Does (cast cheap spells to protect and pump it and get value into a commander damage win), but stacking on the staple power cards felt....excessive? Field of the Dead turns into a clown fiesta once cloning lands and turboramp become available.
That said, a lot of running away with the game came from poor threat assessment. "Oh, the rakdos deck is scary it could make me sacrifice things" meanwhile Richard voltrons up and hits you and makes you die. Phil killed the only way he could be kept in the game, and Seth's main advantage engine, for no real advantage against the player who RAPIDLY took over the game once the Seth and Phil's established boards got nuked.

After the farewell, the commander would have summoning sickness because it just came back form exile. I do not know if one more turn cycle would have changed anything... but that was an oppsie-doodle.
