46:22 Tomer's living death line actually works here, because he controls Pandemonium, and therefore he controls all of its triggers. Richard only gets to choose some of the targets, not the order, so Tomer can choose to put all of the triggers from his creatures on top
Cool episode! I think it is notable that the player who cast multiple tutors was the player who won, despite being held back by bad creatures and bad fixing and a bad commander and also mostly pretty bad ramp. Just something for people to think about.
I used to play Grim Feast in Dina. It's a fun card no one seems to know. Super niche RL cards like that are my favorite, really. Good job Tomer on keeping the 90's spirit alive.
So many of the good ramp spells we have go way back to the original sets. What's funny is that if it were legal in their format, Tomer could play Sol Ring since it came out in 1993. Yeah the most iconic card in Commander was also part of the first ever MTG set.
I was playing EDH back in the beginning and yes, you were required to play an actual Eldsr Deagon as your General. Also it was commonly recommended as a five player game because of it, though not required.
I wonder who has the biggest card pool to build from, Phil with 4 years of cards or Richard with 10. Certainly both of them have more than Seth or Tomer.
Kaervek is my favorite commander, but you have to just embrace being the bad guy. I also love the Grim Feast inclusion, Tomer. I've run it off and on, and it works really well in a board wipe meta or any golgari life gain deck.
Love how I went to Moxfield to view my deck idea from 2 or 3 years ago with kervaek and the player who casts the spell chooses the target, but my stuff is hex proof and Richard literally 2 min later speaks about someone who did the same thing ❤
13:49 coalition relic doesn’t get played anymore bc they made Relic of Legends and since every deck has at least 1 legendary creature, and likely more due to everything being a commander pushed product, it makes at least 2 mana like coalition relic with less effort and higher upside. Imagine having 2-3 legends that are just value pieces and you tap each for a mana. That’s 1-2 MORE mana than coalition relic.
A colleague saw in my Outlook calendar that I will be at MagicCon in February and revealed that he had played Mtg during high school, from Masques through to Onslaught block. This video is a great time capsule to show him how the game changed over the decades. Looking forward to when he finds his old decks.
13:29 richard needs to go to therapy about the last time he got farewelled, because i can't fathom any other good reason why this man cowers in fear like this. "dies to farewell" - who doesn't?
Seth asking about the original iteration of Elder Dragon Highlander requiring the elder dragons to be the commander. I remember reading the history of the format back in 2011 after having played for a year or so and remember reading that you had to play one of the elder dragons as a commander, which would be an interesting stipulation for a future commander clash (especially since they printed new elder dragons)
Seth asked about the OG format, and yes, you chose from one of the Legends elder dragons and those were your options. There wasn't commander damage because everyone started at 21 life.
Phil's glasses are great!
Phil bringing it strong as he does!
I came here to say the same thing.
Glasses of Phil
I literally laughed out loud. Phil is the best
Aren't flashy sunglasses more of a 90s thing?
Tbh this has to be my most favourite gameshow all time.
Phil's intro... Amazing! :D
Wonderfull episode
That was one of my favorite episodes ever. Big fan of the "heavy restrictions but try to build best possible deck" themes
Agreed! It produces the most interesting decks because they are functional but with many less played cards.
Oh Phil, never change...
WHOEVER IS COMING UP WITH THESE CRAZY NEW WAYS TO PLAY IS COOKING
Tomer was absolutely correct, Richard loved this deck
46:22 Tomer's living death line actually works here, because he controls Pandemonium, and therefore he controls all of its triggers. Richard only gets to choose some of the targets, not the order, so Tomer can choose to put all of the triggers from his creatures on top
I love Richard's track record of losing to obscure 90's decks with constant mists
Phil playing with FIRE design? This’ll be a fast one😂
Bet you were surprised! Lol
Phil’s intro is great!
Phil never disappoints
Love Phil's intro.
Love Phil
"Turn 2, Fog, pass." Iconic.
Also, "SUMMON MANA BIRDS"
Seth is not beating the Richard minion allegations with that final play of his!
Phil's intro is iconic...actually I just love Phil haha everything he says is hilarious
I'm shocked that Tomer's first turn wasn't Swamp -> Dark Ritual -> Hypnotic Specter.
Phil, that intro literally had me do a spit-take. Glorious.
The themes recently have been fantastic! Love the creativity!
People forget how powerful the spells from back in the day were. It kinda compensated for the creatures being bad. GG WP Tomer!
You never discard a tutor. It can be literally anything. Even a boat
Ah, that's true for the tutors to hand, but the card disadvantage ones can be ditched when you're already bleeding cards
You know how much we've wanted one of those. We'll take the tutor.
My friend has a Kaervek deck and he targets the casters face 99.99% of the time. It gets ridiculous when he powers out Kaervek early
Clash idea: Mono color commanders but you build a three-color deck around them.
Mindskinner in Grixis would go hard.
One of the best Clash episodes I’ve seen in a long time!
35:51 it's true! You had to choose an Elder Dragon as your Commander since that's all they had.
Yo, I suggested this two weeks ago in the Community post! Can't wait to see how it turns out.
Great idea
Kaervek AND preaching the good word of coalition relic? (My favorite mana rock by far) way to go Seth, you're a king in my book.
Fantastic episode. What a fun game. This is probably my favorite restriction episode so far. And I did not see that ending coming.
Cool episode! I think it is notable that the player who cast multiple tutors was the player who won, despite being held back by bad creatures and bad fixing and a bad commander and also mostly pretty bad ramp. Just something for people to think about.
i wont sleep at night thinking that he literally was on Jund Lifegain. It's driving me insane
really great theme for this week!
I used to play Grim Feast in Dina. It's a fun card no one seems to know. Super niche RL cards like that are my favorite, really. Good job Tomer on keeping the 90's spirit alive.
seth hitting tomer for that five was unsportsmanlike. Don't make a contract you intend to betray.
Spoilers:
How fitting is it that the 1990s deck won with a mechanic from the 2020s?
I…I can’t believe it but zodiac dragon completely popped off that game! Like it had great synergy with diamond valley funnily enough.
My ultimate synergy is zodiac dragon + sneak attack + greater good!
35:54 have also heard about that a fair bit, and the format was called Elder Dragon Highlander for that exact reason I believe
What a fantastic concept.
So many of the good ramp spells we have go way back to the original sets. What's funny is that if it were legal in their format, Tomer could play Sol Ring since it came out in 1993. Yeah the most iconic card in Commander was also part of the first ever MTG set.
I can't believe the 90s teamed up with the initiative! :D
You should make the most broken mechanics battle. Like storm vs. energy vs. affinity vs. dredge.
Zodiac Dragon was broken before the errata. It would return to hand when discarded with the original wording.
I was playing EDH back in the beginning and yes, you were required to play an actual Eldsr Deagon as your General. Also it was commonly recommended as a five player game because of it, though not required.
That Kaervek deck was mine! Its so fun if you can get it going!
This was, really, really awesome! Gj guys!
Predh is every day more tempting
Phil's glasses are fire!!
Would absolutely love to see a PrEDH episode (decks only using New Phyrexia and backwards)
That last few minutes went so hard. That was awesome
That ending!
Amazing finish by Tomer, great job!
Phil is an international treasure
The irony of Tomer using pay to win... hilarious 😂
Was this inspired by my suggestion/comment a few weeks ago?!?!? If so, I'm flattered, if not, I still love this idea! Great job pulling it together!
phil on point with the thumbnail face as always
just FYI, the link in the description goes to your OTJ article instead of the proper one
Here you go! www.mtggoldfish.com/articles/90-s-vs-2000-s-vs-2010-s-vs-2020-s-commander-clash-s17-e23
I love this themes. I dont even play Commander anymore, but I love watching these anyway.
Wow Phil, pretty sure Ice Age is too old for your deck, yet you dropped the coldest intro!! 🥶
I feel like Tomer/90s winning means we actually aren't in the darkest timeline
Watching Tomer discard Multani Marrow Sorcerer broke my heart!
Actually a surprisingly balanced game
Ironic how the 90s deck won with a modern day mechanic.
Great episode!
I wonder who has the biggest card pool to build from, Phil with 4 years of cards or Richard with 10. Certainly both of them have more than Seth or Tomer.
Phil has the most, though it's close, the difference is only a couple sets, I think around bloomburrow is when 2020s overtook 2010s
Giving phil fire design is like giving crim every counter spell in his hand .
Kinda shocking that the 90's deck won. I guess it really goes to show how OP tutors are.
Kaervek is my favorite commander, but you have to just embrace being the bad guy.
I also love the Grim Feast inclusion, Tomer. I've run it off and on, and it works really well in a board wipe meta or any golgari life gain deck.
Entire board disappears to Farewell. RICHARD VINDICATED.
Love how I went to Moxfield to view my deck idea from 2 or 3 years ago with kervaek and the player who casts the spell chooses the target, but my stuff is hex proof and Richard literally 2 min later speaks about someone who did the same thing ❤
Phil’s thumbnail face is legendary!
Excellent idea for an episode!
Phil is just great he cracks me up everytime
Jarad was the first Commander deck I built. Love seeing it show up again!
YES TOMER!! Good win, go 90s magic!
gonna watch that later but already love the idea
Phil that thumbnail is PEAK
Great deckbuilding challenge idea, thanks for the good work.
This was an incredible week guys!
Grim Feast is such an underrated card, it'll easily gain 20+ life over the course of a game without even trying.
Crypt Incursion is similar. It isn't uncommon to gain 20+ life at instant speed.
Great game, Great theme for the week!
That game was so much more fun than I expected it to be
The 90's winning with the dnd Undercity was something else.
Phil’s intro got me man😂
13:49 coalition relic doesn’t get played anymore bc they made Relic of Legends and since every deck has at least 1 legendary creature, and likely more due to everything being a commander pushed product, it makes at least 2 mana like coalition relic with less effort and higher upside. YEAH!! Go Tomer with the Grim Feast! One of my faves!
Phil's introduction made my day 😂
31:50. Tomer giving Rhystic Study props over Trouble in Pairs. Insanity
13:29 richard needs to go to therapy about the last time he got farewelled, because i can't fathom any other good reason why this man cowers in fear like this.
"dies to farewell" - who doesn't?
I LOVE YOU PHIL
Seth asking about the original iteration of Elder Dragon Highlander requiring the elder dragons to be the commander. "Im gonna politic less." - Seth , Probably better known as Saffon Olive.
Politics Kaervek*
(with love)
Phil always has the best Thumbnail headshot.
Phil in the thumbnail is incredible
I think everyone should of dressed for their decade as well. Way to go Phil!
phil looking RADical with those sunglasses
this ep was great. do this theme every season!
Clearly Tomer should have had a fistful of Moxen and an Ancestral Recall available to him - not that he needed them.
The Phil thumbnail strikes again 😂😂😂
Seth asked about the OG format, and yes, you chose from one of the Legends elder dragons and those were your options. There wasn't commander damage because everyone started at 21 life.
MAN i love 2020's Phil what a vibe
Tomer channeling the spirit of Sol Malka, creator of The Rock.
Tomer winning with such random 90s cards was awesome! I mean, Zodiac dragon?
Yavimaya Elder is a smash hit in my Abzan Seance (Ravos + Kodama) deck.
